captioning sponsored by cbs this is the "cbs evening news." >lor: good evening, everyone, i'm jeff glor. at least six are dead, two others you cling a 14 year old girl are hurt following a series of shootings in michigan. a gunman opened fire last night at three separate locations in kalamazoo. the suspect now in custody is 45 year old jason dalton, a driver for the car service uber. one of dalton's passengers says he was a aing unstable hours before the shootings. anna westerner is in kalamazoo. >> he started driving really erratically. we were running stop signs. >> matt mellen says his uber driver yesterdayafter noon was out of control. >> we were kind of driving through medians, driving through the lawn, speeding along.

a stop, i jumped out of the car and ran away. >> reporter: police say just hours later that same man jason brian dalton began a series of ran done shootings. the first victim was an unidentified woman at the meadows townhomes on the outskirts of kal ma gloorks shot multiple times and is expected to survive. approximately four hours later and eight miles away, 53 year old richard smith and his7 yeararld son tyler were fatally shot while looking at cars at the seely ford kia dealership. 15 minutes later, five people were gunned down in their vehicles in the parking lot of a cracker barrel restaurant along interstate 94. among the victims there were mary lou nye, 62. majy jo nye, 60. dorothy brown, 74 and barbara hawthorne, 68. a 14 year old passenger in one of the vehicles remains in grave condition. it was just after midnight when a senior sheriff's deputy spotd

biggest storms ever recorded in the southern hemisphere. cyclone winston had winds up to 177 miles an hour. so far at least t t deaths have been reported but communications are still down and rescue workers have yet to search the rubble of many destroyed homes. the catholic archdiocese of st. louis has issued a letter asking pastors to cut ties with locaca girl scout troops. the church says it's concerned about the scout's positions on social issues. here's jamie yuccas. >> reporter: for almost a hundred years the girl scouts of eastern missouri and arch eye-- archdiocese of st. louis have partnered in leadership programs for young women. today nearly 4,000 scouts meet in st. . uis parishes. but this week the archbishop disbanded the catholic committee on girl scouts because of ongoing concerns that the organization exhibits a troubling pattern of behavior increasingly incompatible with our catholic values. >> things like abortion

parent groups and things like that for girl scouts. >> brian miller with the catholic youth apostolate in st. louis. >> things like same sex marriage and the transgender issue keeps coming up. that is something with our catholic faith, educating our youth, there is a conflict there. >> reporter: in the letter the archbishop says that girl scouts promote role models in conflict with catholic values such as gloria steenem and bete friedan. as a catholic one woman says i'm disgusted by the archbishop's letter. i hope my parish decide toses continue girl scouts while another wrote amen. ank you arch dish op carlson. on the church's online question and answer section, there is a post asking can i still b girl scout cookies. the response, each person must act in accord with their conscience. the girl scouts of eastern missouri says on its website that it values its long-standing partnership with religious
