eastern iowa. readings up into the 40s for highs in much of the area, still at 41 degrees in cedar rapids. winds are northeast at 5, cooling off a bit especially up north where there's still snow pack. 37 in charles city. otherwise, 41 in monticello. 42 in iowa city. here's the clouds wwve been dealing with today. look at the storm taking shape down to the south of us. that promises to be a very significant storm for parts of the ohio valley and looks like and chicago. a winter storm warning has been issued for the chicago area, where they could see 6 to as much as 8 inches of snow. but for us, we'll miss out on all of that. all we'll ha around here are gusty winds anancooler temperatureses as far as tonight goes, readings look like they will stay nice and mild, around 30 not overnight lows. >> thank you. an apartment fire that sent one person to the hospital monday. officials tell cbs 2news the

started in the kitchen of one of the units. a person was cooking with hot oil when the oil ignited, spreading to the cabinets. units sustained heavy damage. the fire has been ruled an accident. gun rights are another step closer to being expanded in iowa. iowa.the house passed several bills, including legislation which would allow children under-14 to use handguns with parental supervision.other bills would restrict public access to information about n owners and legalize the use of suppressors.the bills now head to the senate.it's not clear whether they'll receive much support there. it now appears almost ceceain that a successor to late supreme court justice antonin scalia will not be confirmed until after a new president is sworn in next year. year.republicans on the senate judiciary committee including chairman chuck grassley, sent a letter to majority leader mitch mcconnell saying they won't hold hearings--or a

by president obama.committee members claim their dedesion is based o onstitutional principle and protects the will of the american people. the republicans hoping to succeed obama have thier eyes fixed right now on tonight's nevada caucus. polls show donald trump has a large lead over marco rubio and ted cruz in that state. state.cbs 2 news reporter kevin barry is live in our newsroom with why the outcome could be slightly different. nevada is another state where donald trump has a ton of support -- at least in the polling that's been going on leading up to tonight. tonight.but just like in iowa -- where the caucus *process the polls up to tonight. just like in iowa, where the caucus process might have caused logistical issues for trump supporters, nevada could see a lot of those same challenges. a lot of trump support respect from people who generally are not involved in the ppitical process. in iowa, many people still didn't know on caucus night that they wouldn't be able to just cast their vote and leave.

today, they met in a small claims courtroom. jennifer goodlove spoke why they should get back the money she had to pay for having an event on her property during bicycle stival. odlove says the fee was unfair since her business was not located where the city designated vendors to set up. the city says they charged a fee because it's part of an events. >> they were saying this is something we do differently days. always n ne our eents. that's part of the fun of the market. >> the committee says the market would have needed to close that day if she didn't want to pay the fee. it's now up to a judge to decide. for thousands of students in the cedar rapids community school district, long weekends will soon be routine. it's a story that's getting a lot of attention on our facebook page. last night, the school board approved next year's calendar, which cludes an early

teachers will use that time for professional development. the district says it will not be providing any sort of supervised student activities for those early out days. however, officials do plan to work with the city and others to identify available resources to keep students occupied. exact details of this plan are on the newly redesigned working group theatre put on a play - sparking conversation about social issues. issues.now - university of iowa researchers teamed up with the theatre to focus on *one of the topics - llying prevention. prevention.cbs 2 news reporter steffi lee shows us what they did. steffi? scott and karen - they partnered together and created a web toolkit called helping educators use art to reduce e bullying. bullying.the idea of the website is to help teachers helping educators use art to reduce bullying. the idea is to help teachers try new ideas in their classroom to preventntbullying. rerearchers from the university of iowa college of public health say traditional methods sometimes don't work, but they

>> it's estimated that in cedar pids alone, there are 20,000 female ferrell cats. >> reporter: there just aren't enough homes for litters and litters of pets. that means almost half of animals going into shelters nationally are euthanized. >> even being a veterinarian, didn't realize what a need there was for affordable spay and neuter and what a problem there was with pet overpopulation. >> reporter: on a busy day, the liance could perform surgeries on up to 60 dogs, cats and rabbits that are owned, strays, or from shelters. >> since opening in january of 2013, the iowa humane alliance has performed 19,676 spay and neuter surgeries. today on world spay day, they will do 30 more. >> reporter: in honor of world spay day, the organization is ving additional discounts to the animals from eight shelters. >> can my puppy have a couple-- benefits of spay/neuter surgeries also give these

there is a chance up here in northeastern iowa there could be a couple sprinkles during the evening hours tonight. temperatures around iowa today for highs, generally in the upper 30s in the north. you get to about highway 20 and go south of there, temperatures easily were in the 40s this afternoon. we got to 46 here in cedar rapids. southwestern iowa, nice and toasty. temperature there today at 50 degrees. our weather headlines include the fact that we are going to avoid a major storm here in the next 24 hours, as it eases by just to the east of us. that's been our luck all winter long. it's going to be windy, though, and a little cooler as we get towards the middle of the week as the storm presses by. that doesn'n'last long, as warmer air comes right back in here for the upcoming weekend. our temperatures now, not looking too bad out there. upper 30s in the north to around 40 in the south. it is 42 in iowa city. going down to the south tonight, you can see the gulf of mexico moisture starting to
