the head hawk is sticking around for awhile. awhile.cbs 2 sports anchor zach hanley joins us with the details of kirk ferentz's new contract. big day for kirk ferentz and even bigger for his wallet -- the head hawk signed a 6 year contract extention on his deal which will now go through -- 20 -26 -- season, basically meaning he'll be a hawkeye for life with the extention -- he'll make 4 point 5 million dollars a year -- and is now one of the -- top 10 -- highest paid

for the casino two years ago.a property. the racing and gaming commission denied a license for the community two years ago. a developing subcommittee is pushing city leaders to examine 1300 city-owned properties for redevelopment potential. supervisors are pushing back a vote on raising the minimum wage. last week they voted to raise the wage to 10 dollars 25 an hour by 2019. a second reading of three were scheduled for this morning but supervisors to add some more legal language to the ordinance. if approved the wage will increase to $8.25 in january. ushow it could balance the burden of city buses. right now cedar rapids provides public transit for marion and hiawatha.its a situation that cuts those

asking who's paying what? public transit is not a profitable business to be in and right now in linn county - the city of cedar rapids is the only one in that business currently the revenues being generated and distributed over to the city of cedar rapids is not enough to compare to the services that are being provided for those communities. 12a proposal by the metropolitan planning organization to study a regional transit authority has rapids, robins, and hiawatha. now marion is joining the mix mix it tends to equalize costs among the communities theres always concerns when we have a system set up the way that it is. whose paying their fair share?a regional transit authority would give marion a you have a system set up the way that it is, who is paying their fair share. >> reporter: transit authority would give marion a role in decisions and hopefully more routes. >> probably better service and

(laughs) he just keeps going." going."i'll share with you he just keeps going. >> i'll share with you hayden's incredible journey, why he is still alive and where he goes from here. that's tonight on cbs 2 news 10 at 10. here in cedar rapids we hit 91 degrees temperatures this afternoon. that makes this the second hottest day of the year in terms of the actual temperature. dew points also in the mid-70s and heat index got up to 103 degrees. we're at 89 now, winds out of the south southwest at 14 miles per hour. here's some of those high temperatures that were established around eastern iowa. a lot of places in the upper 80s to the lower 90s.

for the entire summer. now we have some weather issues developing up in northeastern iowa. severe thunderstorm watch issued for counties up near the minnesota border. that's out until 1:00 in the morning. also on a larger scale, a flash flood watch has been issued a long and north of highway 20. all these counties in green have the potential of seeing flash flooding with strong thunderstorms later tonight and during the day tomorrow. as far as rainfall goes, we are getting indications there could be some amounts two to three inches across the northern one third of our viewing ar some spots potentially higher than that. further to the south, not quite as much as far as rain but still should be a lot of places within an inch or so, maybe two inches at showers and storms get underway and last through the evening and overnight hours tomorrow. as we take a look at the radar, you can see thunderstorms have been active in minnesota and wisconsin and now starting to develop up in the northeastern corner of the state. so now you're looking at al mckee, back and howard county,

producing some very heavy rain and a short period of time. the strongest storm currently is located just to the northwest of decorah now and that is moving in an easterly direction. that will be headed towards bluffton, locust and canoe, just to the north of decorah but that one there certainly has the potential of producing strong winds and rainfall rates of one to two inches an hour. as you look to the southwest, actually spreading moisture up into the southwestern united states. that is heading right towards iowa, also plenty of gulf of mexico moisture towards us. the moisture levels are extremely high for this time of year. any thunderstorm that gets going in this type of environment could produce an inch or two of rain in a short period of time. with this front stretched out across northeastern iowa, not moving very much, showers and storms once they get going tonight could go across the

something we call training. that's a setup that could get you two or three rounds of thunderstorms and rainfall totals of four or five inches. on the predictor here, what's going to happen at 8:00 tonight, the model indicating the storms in our northern counties, where they stay through 10:00 tonight. what you'll see here after midnight, some storms start expanding and coming into eastern iowa. by three or 4:00 in the morning, thunderstorms look to be a pretty good bet in most locations lasting through the overnight hours. we should get a break tomorrow during the day but more expected later on in the afternoon. tomorrow will be another steamy day around eastern iowa. temperatures in the 80s and with dew points that will be well back into the 70s. it will be muggy and that's a recipe for more heavy thunderstorms. forecast for tonight's call for those around temperatures upper 60s to lower 70s in most areas, very warm night for this time of year, scattered showers and storms especially after the evening hours. forecast for tomorrow, muddy conditions, scattered showers and storms early and again in
