20 miles per hour. doesn't seem to be -- to be slowly moving this last half an hour or so. >> and we have one of the warnings expires at 6:00. is that the butler county? >> that was floyd. so floyd county. unless they are going to reextend it, which i seriously doubt, that should be done. the rest of it will be confined to the northern parts of county. that's out until 6:15. >> yes. >> and maybe there is a chance they will even cancel a little bit earlier if we continue to see the trends we are seeing on our radar here. as it stands now, clarksville, nashau and plainfiled the storms are coming your way between now and 6:17 this evening. and there is going to be some very heavy rain and high winds, but the tornado threat seems to have eased up a little bit. we will go back in on the velocity now and show out
6:01 pm
county one to expire. you can -- there is not much to see on this velocity mode. >> yeah. now we are to that point where, you know, we are in the situation, and we are expected to stay on the air. that's our responsibility to keep you warned and aware of the situation. we don't have a lot to show you in terms of an actual tornado, which is a good thing. sometimes we are up here and we are talking and going on to other topics. the reason why is we don't see the tornado threat so we're talking about other elements, which include the heavy rain and the wind and the hail potential of these storms. you can see them there. they are from the minnesota border right on down towards waverly. they are going to go across the northern parts of our viewing area in the next one to two hours. there is no question there is going to be some very heavy rain across our northern counties. but that flood warning that's in effect, that's in northwestern floyd county, too. the flash flood warning, i am guessing. >> yeah. that's in --
6:02 pm
something tonight. >> there is one until 6:45 right there for floyd and mitchell. >> that's a thunderstorm though. i was talking about the flash flood. >> oh. >> and that one is down in there. that is out to 10:45. that's not in our viewing area. because of the strength of the storms, they have issued flash flood warnings and it's quite possible one of those could come out from that storm that has been creeping slowly across southern floyd and northern portions of butler county. wouldn't shock me to see that here in the next 2, we have the flash flood watching that's in effect. so we have these storms that are ongoing. we have heavy rainfall rates and these are really the areas that have seen a lot of rain this year and the last couple of weeks, really, and that's where the concern is for some heavy rain and potentially flash flooding. this watch goes to 7:00 thursday. >> and on the chat you are not seeing anything new over there,
6:03 pm
>> i have not. >> had a chance to look? >> i have not seen anything new. they are continuing the tornado warning for butler county. we just got something from the national weather service -- i'm sorry. the storm prediction center. >> an md or something? >> yeah. they are saying that it's mainly near and north of highway 20. we are there watching the potential. they may be issuing a severe thunderstorm watch. they are saying a 60% chance. >> so what rebecca is about a mesoscale discussion from the severe storm forecast center and they are monitoring the area along and north of highway 20 for thunderstorms. they did not mention a tornado watch, which is good. they think the potential is there for supercells that could produce wind and heavy rain and hail. and now our circulation north of greene is a little bit healthier. we will back up the timeline.
6:04 pm
evolved. there you go. so here we go. probably back a half an hour or so, and you can see a nice looking cup right there. and that's when we had our best chance of getting a tornado. then as we advance in time, you will notice that we started losing the colors and then they pretty much went away entirely and now just in the last frame a little bit more red has come back into play here. so this thing could be cycling a bit and it looks like there was a intensification there. >> yeah. there is still a severe thunderstorm warning for floyd county. that goes until 6:45. and there could still be wind up to 60 miles per hour there and ping-pong-sized hail. there is also a flash flood warning for floyd until 9:00. >> that's something i just told you was gonna happen. >> yes. >> i am not surprised by that at all. and there you can see that
6:05 pm
the hail size there 3.3. that will break out the car windows. that's a large hailstone, to say the least. >> yeah. and there is -- is that -- that's a little bit north -- there is a rock -- rockfalls, there was a report of half dollar sized hail that lasted for about ten minutes. we are talking about that earlier. you could get, with these storms stalling out, you can get hail that could fall for a while and pile up a >> yeah. these are not fast-moving storms. again that's why i'm so concerned about the flash flooding issues here. you are looking at rainfall rates of 4 inches an hour and the storms are moving 15, 20 miles per hour. you know, you could easily see 2, 2.5 inches of rain in a short period of time. with the ground as saturated as it is, it has nowhere to go. the cedar river runs right through charles city. they are talking about flooding on the cedar river near charles
6:06 pm
eventually on downstream. so that could have implications on places like severe falls, waterloo and the cedar river in cedar rapids which is expected to crest at moderate level. that is undoubtedly tied to what happens with the rains that fall in the next 24 to 48 hours. there is your couplet. looks a little bit healthier now. it appears that the storm is trying to restrengthen some. i don't know if it's enough, if they will advance the warning out to the counties east this. but the bottom line is, it's not nearly as impressive looking as it was earlier. >> i wouldn't be surprised if we see a couple of severe thunderstorm warnings after this. that's probably what's gonna happen. we are still going to see that wind and hail threat. >> right. >> once this tornado warning does expire. >> brandon, do you know how to do the cone track on there as far as that goes?
6:07 pm
right there. i think this will pinpoint it a little bit more. that other one was more of a broad brush. this will get it in there tight. it's going 20 miles per hour. that's about right. so powersville and horton and near nashua and republic 6:15, 6:53 and 7:00 are some of the times when the storm should be moving through there. you will be getting into northern breamer county and chickasaw county. a lot of rain coming down there, too. on, we will be able to see how the strikes are doing here. there they are. dun-dun-dun. there is a lot of those. you can see the second cell around mason city that's intensified. in that cell there 554 lightning strikes. i am sure the other one up north is not quite as big, but it has been growing. that cell up there is actually producing the largest hail we
6:08 pm
minutes. that's the region right there. that one was really putting out the hail. and looks like it's actually gotten bigger. right in that orange core, that's the part of the storm where we're seeing the large hail. according to our model here, the algorithms that we look at, it's pointing to 3.3 inches in diameter, hail, baseball size. it's not necessarily reaching the ground that way. could be melting a little bit. what it's sh potential there for some really large hail in the northeast portion of s arogordo county in the next 15, 20 minutes. >> we could see big hail there. that has been an area where there has been rain already. so if the air has been able to cool, then we are not saying baseball sized, but we could get large hail there possibly ping-pong or larger.
6:09 pm
viewers here, too, if the warning does expire at 6:15, of course we will go into our regular news broadcast. scott and karen are in the chairs ready to roll over there. we will be taking you to the 6:00 news. the late version for you. that will be coming up assuming they do not extend the tornado warning further to the east. but i almost guarantee there will be some sort of warning coming out. hopefully thunderstorm warning. >> yeah. i haven't seen any indication. we still have 6 this one for northern butler county. >> and you see the rainfall rates there that brandon just pegged. 5.5 inches in an hour's time. just amazing amounts of water vapor in these thunderstorms. now that they have gotten up there around 58,000 feet in the atmosphere, they are sending it down in torrents. there is no question there. there is some torrential rain falling in parts of floyd and butler counties.
6:10 pm
55,000 feet. if we switch over to max 2, we are starting to get some rainfall totals and this is just north of greene where there is estimated rates of over 2.5 inches. to the north of that southwest of charles city 2 inches of rain there. rain still falling in this area. so we could have some more rain that starts to pile un. >> is this old data here? is that a brand new circulation? that's back to marlboro. >> yeah. that looks strongerha we have seen. >> and that all coming in the last couple of minutes here. >> you can actually see on the master mode 2 north of greene, you can start to see a bit of a core starting to tighten up, too. >> well, we shall see what the nws does with this here. but again that has really tightened up there. shows quite a bit of intensification in a couple minutes time.
6:11 pm
thunderstorms do. supercells, they can't maintain that energy all along. so they spin up and weaken and then they can spin right back up and do it all over again. but right now just southwest of marble rock, a pretty strong storm is forming almost over the top of you. interesting. >> yeah. and towards nashua, it's likely going to be south of chickasaw. but if you're in this area, you just want to stay away from the windows. stay inside. get to the lowest level of a tornado. we have not gotten confirmation in the last 20 minutes or so. could have some damage with large hail and some strong winds. >> and nashua, horton, places like that, republic, federica, you're in the path of the storm now. so that's the area that will either get a new thunderstorm warning or a new tornado warning depending on what the national weather service decides to do. if they don't think it's intense enough, they won't put
6:12 pm
and something new is going to have to be put out somewhere. >> we have not gotten any sort of word from them yet. >> and let's back off just a little bit here to give you a better perspective of northern iowa. in relation to, say, waterloo and up to the minnesota border, there you can see waterloo. all of the activity is well north of highway 20. actually, north of the line from waverly over to old wine and guttenberg. it looks like these have the potential to stay in one place for quite some time and they are not showing any signs of really falling apart. i can tell you that. so ultimately this is all going to come across northeastern iowa unless they start to weaken. >> yeah. and then of course we have been
6:13 pm
but the thing that's going to last longer is getting multiple rounds of rain and the potential for flooding and flash flooding especially north of highway 20 really over the next two days. the next 48 hours we could have some flooding and some issues along area rivers. >> in fact, we could go to the 24 rain total there. i want to see what we're getting as far as amounts are concerned. you can see in floyd county ch southern parts there are looking at rains that have gone anywhere from 2 to maybe as much as 5 inches. that query there showing 5.6. that's a radar estimate. so that's not ground truth. but usually these are in the ballpark. so there may very well be places in western floyd county that have between 5 to 5.5 inches of rain here in the past hour and a half. that is undoubtedly going to
6:14 pm
and we have a flash flood warning for parts of floyd county. some decent hail. that cell there up in northeastern saragordo county, that is not as prolific as earlier to say the least. that's a good sign. >> yeah. waiting to see what the weather service is going to do here. this morning should -- this warning should be expiring in i don't know if they are just waiting to see what the data, waiting to the last minute to decide here. still over marble rock and near
6:15 pm
we are getting to the point now where we have one minute left on the warning. we will find out if this is going to be extended. i would say 50-50 right now. maybe more of a severe thunderstorm warning as opposed to a tornado warning. keep our fingers crossed on that. but the point is we have got thunderstorms up in our northern and northwestern counties that are going to be very active. those will be lasting right on through tonight weekend. we have seen model indications there could be 2 to 6 inches of rain in the northern counties. as wet as they are, they can't really take that and that could cause not only flash flooding but river flooding and that will be a concern in am sop of those rivers that come out of southern minnesota and cut across northern and northeastern iowa as we go through the next few days. here again you can see the movement is generally to the east, but it is slow. >> pretty slow.
6:16 pm
still not said anything. and they haven't seen -- normally by this time you get a cancel, but that hasn't come up. >> you don't see the tornado warning on here, do you? i don't see any warning itself. >> so it does appear at least for now the warning has not been extended. we don't see any evidence of it there. so we are hoping that the tornado warning is canceled. >> yeah. it looks like -- >> expired anyway. >> it they haven't issued any other warnings. >> that being the case, we'll be continuing to monitor the situation, but we will send it back to the news desk. we will get an in that regard. david muller will be going to prison for killing sabrina hustad janish in november.
6:17 pm
>> reporter: the jury returned a verdict of voluntary manslaughter. that means the jury believed that this was what some called a crime of passion. it took the jury a day and a half to return that verdict. the prosecutor says that wasn't very long considering the amount of evidence they had to go through. he believes they presented the case the best way they could. >> this is our system and when asking me if this is the charge that i felt we proved or were trying to prove. no, we felt strongly about our case, we felt it was a strong case but this is our system.." and we had felt it was a strong case, but this is our system. after the verdict was read, he gave a nod and smile to the miller family.miller could face up to ten years for voluntary manslaughter...and the prosecutor is pushing for 15 years for each count of theft.dora miller, cbs 2 news a woman is dead after a

rapids.it happened on j-street violent three vehicle crash in cedar rapids that happened on j street southwest north of hawkeye downs road at about 11:30 this morning. a woman in a car died at the scene. a woman and child in an suv were taken to the hospital but they are expected to be okay . >> a man in a pickup truck went to the hospital. no word on his condition at this time. police are still trying to determine how the accident happened. we do have a weather update for you. let's go back to chief meteorologist terry swales. tightened up once again and a new tornado warning has been issued. this will be out until 7:00 tonight. this does include butler county. and so as you can see, the storm is still looking very healthy and continues to move slowly on across the southern portions of floyd, now into northern butler county. this is also for floyd. is that what you are seeing over here? >> yoo, floyd county and butler
6:19 pm
counties. and they are saying that likely where this tornado is being produced, sabrina if you want to go to velocity mode over there, likely south of marble rock and that's where we started to see this rotation pick up a little bit and i think the weather service may have just been waiting for some better returns and a better signal on the rotation there. it doesn't look incredibly well defined, but we see some strength there with the bright reds showing so regardless of if a tornado is being produced, we have not gotten confirmation on that. but there is the potential we could be seeing winds up to 60 miles per hour and especially in southern floyd county. that's where there's a lot of hail likely occurring there, too. >> going back to that timeline, too, and going back to velocity mode. and i want to show people what's happened over the past, say, 45 minutes.
6:20 pm
little bit further. this is when we had the first tornado warning. the storm is near marble rock. apparently there were trees that were damaged in marble rock. that was more from wind i think than tornados. as we push this forward we lose the couplet here and the rotation really starts to weaken and pretty much is gone right there. and now we are starting to advance this again and notice just near marble rock there comes the couplet one more time. it does pp actually started to cycle some and has reintensified. it is located in the southern portion of floyd county. has virtually moved hardly any from where it was 45 minutes ago. it is going to impact southern parts of floyd county and northern butler county as it continues to head to the east- southeast. we are not done with it yet. that's for sure. look at all the lightning associated with the storm. it's very energized to say the least.
6:21 pm
extremely unstable boundary. temperatures just to the west today we are in the 90s over much of iowa while here in eastern iowa 70s and 80s were found and it's that thermal boundary that is driving the thunderstorms tonight and right now they are on their way towards nashua, republic, and dresden around 6:40 in nashua and around 7:00 in the town of republic. if you are in that area, you need to take this storm seriously. they have had a couple of tornado warnings there was a brief tornado touchdown to the west of marble rock earlier on. but never heard much more. that was apparently brief in nature. >> yeah. we haven't had any other reports of confirmed tornados. but we have been seeing some damage come through in parts of floyd and rockford, norris springs. we have had tree damage there. and that's -- you know, we can't say if that's necessarily from a tornado or not, but
6:22 pm
could be from some of the lightning occurring there. so we have seen some damage occurring with the storm. actually, starting to see a little bit brighter returns on velocity. >> yeah. >> near greene. >> you're absolutely right. between marble rock and green there. that's where we've got the strongest of it. and if we could go in on the echo tops, too. give you an idea how that's going. and this is important to us. the taller the thunderstorm, the worse it's going to be. and this one is up there around 55,000-foot. that level now for the past, i don't know, hour or so. and i'm sure the one off to the east of it is also up there, too. 56,000-foot. so these are very, very large thunderstorms and, boy, they are capable of producing some extremely heavy rainfall aside from the potential hail and winds and even a potential tornado. >> yeah. i mean, those are some, yeah,
6:23 pm
occurring there. ping-pong sized probably reaching the ground right now. north of greene. starting to creep just to the east of greene into northern butler county. so we also have that concern of some large hail that could be falling and the storm has been stalling kind of near marble rock. we have had rainfall rates as close to -- i mean, 4.5 to 5 inches of rain an hour. and we could be seeing some flash flooding occurring. there is a flash flood warning in eec including marble rock until 9:00 and so a lot of hail could be piling up and a lot of rain, as well. >> put the 24-hour rain total up there. boy, you can just see -- just put it up around just north of greene there. i am just curious. yeah, right in that general area there. what you're gonna get for a total. looks like we're talking about 2.5 inches there. and then you get up into that
6:24 pm
northwest floyd county or west central floyd county. still up around 5.6 inches. there as broad part of this county that's probably seeing 2 to as much as 5.5 inches of rain and all of that water is going to be heading downstream and could probably get into the cedar river basin and some of the other smaller rivers that feed into that and portions in floyd of butler counties. so i am quite concerned about that threat more impressive. i would say just northwest of greene there. that's got some good color. >> it does. we are seeing that clash show up near greene. really starting to creep into southern butler county now. that's where the concern is growing for the possibility of a tornado. that is slowly moving off to the east. so if you are in the path of this storm -- brandon, if we can zoom in more, i would like
6:25 pm
. >> also, we have some pictures just in. >> we do. we have some pictures of some downed trees. this will give you an indication of what these storms can do in a quick amount of time. this was taken in rockford in floyd county. sent in by one of our viewers. here is another indication of what these storms can do. it can look severe at this point. considering if this was in an
6:26 pm
difficulty. three tornado warnings over the past hour. that's why we're on the air to keep you safe. it is mandated anytime there is a tornado warning in effect. we are on the air to track the storms to keep you safe. >> it's extreme northern butler county. >> if you are in that area, there are precautions you should be taking right now if you are in the warning area. you want to get to level of your home inside. be in an interior room. if you happen to be listening on the radio or you're outside, you want to get into a ditch, lay low. use pillows. use anything to protect yourself. it's really important that you stay away from any windows or doors when you're in a tornado warning at this point because when the tornado is out there,
6:27 pm
going. cover your head with helmets, pillows, blankets, whatever you have. these pictures from floyd county, we give you an indication of the types of storms we are dealing with tonight. >> i have actually, scott, been looking at power outages. thankfully, there are not that many. especially in that area that you have been talking about. there are only at this point about 24 customers without power. so there doesn't seem to be any power lines having been hit or any situation where the electrical crews are out and about at but we'll keep checking it for you. we want to stress we do not have any confirmed tornados on the ground. this is all doppler kate. we are looking at the doppler, you see that red core. close to green. that's the worst part of the storm. that is definitely rotating. and the greens mean the winds are blowing one way and the reds mean it's going another.
6:28 pm
that's how, thanks to doppler radar, we can determine where the circulations are that produce tornados. as far as a classic hook echo, i am not seeing it. there is definitely strong rotation within the storm. sometimes it's at the mid levels as posed to the ground where the tornado would be touching down. that could be the case here. we do have a channel on back here where we can actually see chase video. some chasers that are out in the area. they are sending the video back. we cannot air it. we don't have the legal rights i can tell you it is an impressive looking wall cloud and it is rotating and it is not far from producing a tornado. so it is a serious storm, it say the least, as it's working across extreme southern floyd county and into northern sections of butler county not too far away from greene based on what i am seeing on the rotation of the radar right now. >> yeah. and we still do have a lot of lightning happening there, as well. we have almost 600 strikes that's likely happened in the
6:29 pm
south of charles city and near north of plainfiled where all that lightning is occurring. also, some hail possibly falling and a lot of heavy rain. >> and just had a report maybe about 48 customers in floyd county are without power. not a huge number. >> we do have a confirmed tornado now near greene. >> okay. i can sure see that. yep. go back. there it is. bam. getting closer, please. we will zoom it way in. greene. if you are in greene, you need to get into a safe spot. storm is close to greene and producing a confirmed tornado. what else? >> i can tell you there was an emergency manager that reported a brief tornado touched down four miles west -- west- northwest of greene. and that was at about 6:24 is when the national weather service got that report. but we're still seeing some strength there.
