50 in cedar rapids. 49 in dubuque. winds are out of the west from about 6 to 12 miles per hour. could see gusts from 35 miles per hour this afternoon. the dew points, which were in the 60s for much of the weekend. it was a little humid. they've now combon back down into the low to mid 40s. that cooler and try ir air will be sticking around for most of the week. your day planner for today will be in the mid 60s by around 3:00 this afternoon. there is a satellite and radar, the back edge of the clouds eastern iowa. our predictor has us in sunshine today. clear skies, cool again tonight. could see clouds, maybe a light shower or two in our northern koun tis by the time we get into tomorrow afternoon. that's something we'll have to watch. your forecast today, mostly sunny, cool and breezy. temperatures will be in the low to mid 60s area wide. looking like a pretty nice start to the week, and be back to track those river levels and a forecasted crest coming up with your weather first forecast in just a few minutes. >> brandon, thank you for that.

evacuation area, to keep that secure. there is a daily curfew that is in effect from 8 p.m. until 7 a.m. within the flood area. saftety of homes and businesses. that's where the national guard will step in. . verbatim. (( 10:21:02 )) ... part of that mission will be working at evacuation control points just to kind of help things moving smoothly for people who need to 10:21:18 )) .. they'll be on the ground and ready to do the mission sometime early tomorrow afternoon. " "colonel happgood says the guard is also bringing special equipment in case it's needed. right now there are voluntary evacuations in place for those living along the cedar river in cedar rapids.they're not mandatory - but some city leaders are urging residents to heed their warnings. they say it's noy only for your safety - but also the safety of first responders - who are tasked to rescue anyone stuck in floodwaters.

to help sandbagging efforts. one family in town - the erlockers - told cbs 2 news about a hundred volunteers - some including people they've never met - came by to help sandbag around their home. every half hour - more trucks would show up with more unexpected sandbags, and even food and water. "really makes you look at what you have. especially around you and the wonderful people that are always always there to help no matter what. no matter the world there is always good that goes with it." it.""erlockers" said they were very thankful to everyone who stopped by to help save her home.officers are walking around the evacuation zone making sure no one's wandering around who doesn't belong here. if you live in the area and are coming in and out of the evacuation zone - make sure to have your i-d with proof of address to show them. local first responders are now stationed on both sides of the river.

boats and specialty equipment. since all bridges are closed i-380 will be the only way for first responders to get to emergency calls. and some 380 exits are closed for emergency and construction crews only. so if you're driving along 380 they're asking people to be patient. and allow more travel bunch of you, you're asked to be patient and allow extra travel time. >> that's what we're re and we have a mission to not only respond to the flood event, well."buelow says there was a designated emergency car lane on i-380 during the flood back designated emergency lane back in 2008. you'll remember that on i-380 north and southbound. right now, there is not one, but officials say that they will make plans as needed. cedar rapids motorists will have a tougher time getting to work this morning because many

leaders say there will be extra traffic there. >> people going to work, there will be some traffic challenges with only wilson avenue and 7th open. it's tempting to drive on 380 and look over your shoulder at the river and then you slow down. it's -- it's a difficult section of the road anyway, as it is, the s curve, so please use caution in the morning because there will be more traffic on 380 than normally would because of the exit ramps t closed. >> since all bridges are closed in town, crews worked on the historic sutliff bridge to prepare for flooding. they hope to prevent what happened in 2008. during that historic flooding, portion of the bridge was destroyed. officials say it took a couple years to remodel it and get it open again. over the weekend, they took the bridge down to just a skeleton structure, removing more than 750 bolts to take off hundreds of panels. they say the water could reach a foot under the bridge, but they

good morning and welcome back. it's 6:14 as we take a look at some of the river levels right now. this is some of the newest data we are just getting in. the latest observation, the cedar river at vinton currently cresting with major flooding going all that watter is working downstream here to cedar rapids. the latest observation has the current river at 18.26 feet. it has risen a foot in just the last five hours, and it's expected to crest around 23 feet coming up some time tomorrow afternoon with major nooding going on here in the cedar rapids area. take a look at the river at independence, it crested yesterday. still, major nooding going on at 17.66 feet. in animosa, all that water is

that's expected to crest early wednesday morning around 24 feet, resulting in major flooding. current conditions right now here in cedar rapids, we are at 50 degrees. winds west out of the west at 12 miles per hour with a dew point of 46. temperatures area wide, upper 40s in decora, oline, and charles city. 50 in waterloo, monticell eshg. wind speeds are out of the west about 6 to 12 miles per hour. they will pick up this afternoon to around 35 miles per hour, we which were in the 60s yesterday, are now in the 40s as that cold front has moved through. you can see here, the temperature change in just the last 24 hours anywhere from 16 to 20 to 19 degrees cooler than we were at this time yesterday morning. as far as what to expect, cooler and dry conditions for today. pleasant and less humid for much of the week. we will be drieshgs as well, with plenty of sunshine and seasonal temperatures with readings up in the near 60s to 70 degrees all week long.

little cooler up in decora. that front working its way into illinois, taking the clouds with it. we are going to enjoy some sunshine here for this afternoon. our predictor model has not much of any clouds in the forecast for today. we'll keep the clear skies going tonight. tomorrow, though, we could see scattered showers work their way into our far northern counties late tomorrow evening. that's something we'll have to watch, not anticipating any heavy rain fall as they look to be scattered at best. winds will be gusting today. they will lighten up again, another gusty day tomorrow with those winds about 20 to 25 miles per hour. forecast today,mostly sunny, school. it will be breezy. temperatures will be near 63 in decora. 67 cedar rapids to 68 down in washington. then for tonight, it looks like another cool night. clear and chilly. again, it will be breezy. winds will subside a little bit, but we are going with low to mid 40s area wide with reading of 44 in cedar rapids. your 7-day forecast, 66 tomorrow.

friday. back up to around 70 degrees as we head into the weekend. i want to share data with you. we are going back 165 years. march and april, we've seen 13 crests above flood stage here in cedar rapids at the cedar river. 17 times, we have seen a crest above flood stage in may and august. that is mainly due to some heavy rain events that we typically see in the summer months, but the you -- unique thing here on this map th september. never in 165 years have we seen the cedar river at cedar rapids crest above flood stage. so that is just really remarkable when you go back to look at it because the data goes back 165 years to the 1850s. >> do you think because we have cooler temperatures, that that's going to have some effect on how quickly the river recedes? >> i don't know if the cooler temperatures will necessarily have an im -- impact on how

the late winter into early spring, obviously, the snow melt from up north into wisconsin and minnesota so all that water with lin drawn into the tributaries and affect the cedar rivers and other rivers around the area. typically we see the river rise in late spring and then again in the summer with the heavy rain events, but what we've seen the last couple weeks with all the heavy rain, that's typical of what you would see in the middle of the summer. so that situation was unique in itself. >> we should point out at this ti keeping an eye on the cedar river, but up the river, you know, we watch independence, and now animosa, too. not to take away from the emergency that will be playing out here in animosa, but they are going to see their river rise very high over the next towards the end of the week #u7 -- up there in jones county. on the bottom of your television screen, we've been putting the latest news updates and bulletins there, but we are also rotating in some of those river

it here, where the river just went up to high. some of these folks had 6 to 7 inches of rain last week. it all runs through that watershed, as well. so it'll be heading from independence, eventually through the animosa area by the end of the week here. for those of you joining us live in iowa city this morning, we can tell you gratefully and gladly that the iowa rir is not expected to have any flooding this year like what it dud in 2008 w multiple sites. iowa river should maintain, other than where you always see the water rise there. but for the most part, we are watching the cedar river, and we'll be closely watching the river up around jones county for the next two days. >> i talked with iowa flood center yesterday about that. you can check out that video. i put it up on my facebook page if unt a little bit more detail about the iowa river. for right now, we are taking a look at some of the neat stories.

have come out to help people. many people don't know each other. they are just driving around trying to help out. one of cedar rapids most iconic buildings got a lot of help. carpenter's union local 308 showed up at the paramount theater with their power tools. a small army of volunteers streamed in to carry the chairs to higher ground. local 308 says they take pride in what they can do to help with that building. >> yeah. absolutely. this is our 2008 flood so we want to take pride in our community and help out wherever we can. >> local 308 has been teaming up over the past few days to help family members and anyone else back up their homes to save their possessions before the nooding starts. well, another well-known stop downtown is completely bare inside. parlor city took out all they're tables and booths to keep it all dry if they should take on water.

well #k078 back chl we are taking a look at i-380 at 8th street northeast. we know that now i-380, many ramps are shut down, and we just want to give you this time of morning, there's usually not this much traffic. it's not backed up at all. it's moving very fast. it's moving quite well, but there are more cars than usual at this time of the morning that we normally see. >> edgewood road closed. the bridge over the cedar river from ellis to -- all the way up to glass road. at this hour, blares ferry road bridge remains open to palo; however, we are expecting that

high the water is, and as the sun starts to rise, how fast it's moving. there's even two logs that are stuck on the -- the parts of the bridge that are the closest to us. it's also important to understand here is if we take a walk over this way, if you go down here, when the water is low, this is not a 20-foot drop. you can go all the way down, and if it's dry enough, there's a big sand bar that you can go down there every so often if you are on this bike trail and you see people going down there 15 to 20 meet easily without ev and, now, the water is all the way up to us. you would never know just how deep it really goes there. also, just another reiteration of the idea of why you don't deal with flood waters when you -- when you just really at all. you don't understand what's below it. and really, a pretty scenic view of the czechsslovac museum. we are checking how high the water is starting to get on that

barriers there. just for perspective, those hesco barriers are probably 4 to 5 feet tall. it looks like they have a decent amount of -- of play there, as well. at last check, the river was at about 18.2 feet. so you add on about 5 feet more to that, and that's the expected crest. you can see that may bring those hesco barriers into check. for now, though, we are gng brandon marshall. >> thanks, kevin. taking a look at current conditions now, we are off to a cool start in cedar rapids. it is 50 degrees. winds are west out of the 12 miles per hour, as you can see here by burr bumpy sky cam. the dew point currently at 46 degrees. temperatures across the state, 50 in waterloo, 48 in decorah. mid 40s across the central and western parts of iowa this afternoon. as we head through the morning, we will warm up to about the low

into the early afternoon hours. winds i did mention are pretty gusty. those dew points, which were in the 60s, a little bit humid for the weekend, are now in the 40s as a cold front and much cooler air mass has begun to work it way in. the cold front is now pushing into illinois. the back edge of the clouds are pushing past the quad cities into illinois, as well. so we will keep the sunshine around this afternoon. our predictor has us with sunshine, clear skies as we get into the morning hours. we are wat widely scattered showers late tomorrow night but really are not anticipating anything heavy with these showers at all. of course, we will keep a lookout on that. mostly sunny, cool, and breezy as we head into today. we'll be in the low 60s to the north, looking at 67 in cedar rapids, iowa city, and washington. temperatures will be in the upper 60s to around 70 degrees, and when we come back, we'll track the current refr levels. we'll get the latest

area. the latest observation has the river at 18.55 feet. at 1 a.m., the river was at 17 feet. you can see it's risen about a foot and a half in just the last several hours and expected to rest around 23 feet as of tomorrow afternoon with major looding around the cedar rapids area. independent at crest yesterday do. currently at 16.66 feet. it is slowly receding but not expected to fall flood stage until later on this week. in animosa, wurntly at 18.44 feet. it is crest as well and will likely crest. 50 degrees as the sun comes up in cedar rapids. winds are west at 12 miles per hour. the humidity is long gone there p thanks to a cold front that moved through. upper 40s fromdecorah back to
