an in depth look at the people and events that shape our community.this is iowa in focus.this week -- the bottom halves of both tickets tee off against each other.we talk to the representative responsible for getting more republicans in congress. welcome to iowa in focus -- we're giving context to what happens in the headlines and on the campaign trail. trail.that starts with the barnstorm. normally -- friday's are for news that people want to never get any attention.that was much different this week. during the day -- friday -- a private tape was released that caught donald trump talking to former access hollywood host -- billy bush.trump bragged about making overtly sexual advances on married women -- in an incredibly crude way -- and said that it was ok -- and he was able to do it -- because he was famous.after the news broke -- trump

late friday on facebook. "i've said and done thigns i regret and the things released today on this more than a decade old video are one of them. anyone who knows me knows these words don't reflect who i am. i said it, i was wrong and i apologize." apologize."his wife -- melania -- who trump was also married too when he made these remarks -- came out with her own statment -- saying -- in part: "the words my husband used are unacceptable and offensive to me. this does not represent the man that i the heart and mind of a leader." generally -- trump has gotten past controversial comments about muslims and minority communitites without losing a lot of support.this time is different.democrats quickly jumped on the attack -- but they were joined by republican leadership in congress who quickly spoke out against what donald trump said. said.vice presidential candidate -- mike pence said: "as a husband and father, i am offended by the words and actions described by donald trump in the eleven year old

not condone his remarks and cannot defend them." them."arizona senator john mccain went one step farther -- withdrawing his endorsement for trump -- saying: "...donald trump's behavior this week...makes it impossible to continue to offer even conditional support for his candidacy." candidacy."ohio senator rob portman said he'll be writing in mike pence for president. another big name to take the biggest steps is the chairman of the house oversight and government reform committee -- jason chaffetz.few members of congress have done more to go after hillary clinton -- but representative chaffetz -- even before john mccain -- took back his endorsement for donald trump. ""i'm out. i can no longer, in good conscious, endorse this person for president. it is, some of the most abhorrent, and offensive comments that you can possibly imagine. my wife and i, we have a 15-year- old daughter. and if i can't look her in the eye, and tell her these things, i can't endorse this person. so, i'm
10:33 am
don't know who i'm gonna vote for, i'm not gonna vote for hillary clinton, there's no way, under no scenario, but i cannot offer an endorsement, for whatever that means, of donald trump." the next day -- rod blum was in dubuque.he's said before that he'll support the republican nominee -- and even after some of trump's controversial comments -- blum said he would still stick with trump.this time around -- blum only told the voters that he don' his campaign did release this statement -- saying ""donald trump's comments were disgusting and offensive: treating women in a degrading manner is always unacceptable." but even when we had cameras in the room -- the representative declined to comment further. even before that -- the trump campaign had been fighting all week long to deal with the news that their candidate was able to avoid federal income taxes for nearly two decades. what is important to know is that none of this is illegal.
10:34 am
this.tax law essentially allows a business to deduct net operating losses from a business' gross income -- up to 50 million dollars -- when they spend more to operate than they made in that year. year.when the losses are bigger than other income -- those deductions can be carried over for up to 15 years into the future -- and two years into the past. past.that means when donald trump lost about 916-million dollars in 1995 -- he was able to apply that law to his taxes 1992.this only means that he has the ability to write off federal income taxes for that period of time. time.the trump campaign has said that he's paid hundreds of millions of dollars in all other kinds of taxes -- property -- sales -- city -- real estate -- employee -- the list goes on.we don't know what he actually wrote off -- or what he actually paid -- because the campaign still hasn't released his tax returns.those documents would clear this all up.trump said
10:35 am
head of the business -- to pay the smallest amount of taxes as possible for the benefit of everyone who depends on the business to be as profitable as possible. "as a businessman and real estate developer, i have legally used the tax laws to my benefit. and to the benefit of my company, my investors and my employees. i have often said on the campaign trail that i have a fiduciary responsibility to pay no more tax than is legally required like anybody else. else.the trump campaign also is accusing the new york times of breaking the law to get all that information -- meaning that "the new york times, like establishment media in general, is an extension of the clinton campaign, the democratic party and their global special interests." governor terry branstad jumped behind his party's nominee. branstad says the work that trump has done makes him that much more of an expert about how to make the system better. better. ""donald trump has been so

system, but he says the system is flawed and ought to be changed, but the establishment in d.c. and their friends in the media but don't want to focus on the things that really make things better and i guess my feeling is that we have to be focusing on the issues."." it didn't take long for the hillary clinton campaign and iowa democratic party to strike back. back.iowa attorney general tom miller and the state treasurer michae trump taking advantage of those loopholes shows how broken the system is. before all this happened -- the two vice presidential candidates were on stage together for their first and only debate.in 2016 -- the bottom half of both tickets have been trying to counteract high unfavorable ratings for their party's top candidate. candidate.tim kaine has been working to limit the damage from some clinton controversies -- like her email account while secretary of state -- and concerns about

trump ideas -- and trump himself -- a little easier to swallow for voters of all kinds. "six times tonight, i have said to governor pence, i can't imagine how you defend your running mate's position on one position or the next and on all six cases he's refused to defend him. him.don't put words in my mouth. i'm happy to defend him. most of what you've said is completely false and the american people know that. what got lost in this debate is the fact that both mike pence and tim kaine each have decades of policy decisions of their own.they spent much of the 90-minute debate talking about their running mates -- until they hit on one of the most interesting pieces of their shared history at the end.they are both very religous -- but their religion has led them in opposite political directions.mike pence is a champion for socially conservative issues -- signing a law in his state of indiana that may have legally protected businesses
10:38 am
couples.tim kaine has said he is personally ?against? abortion -- but adopts and pushes the democratic party stance of pro-choice legislation.in their back and forth -- there in incredible nuance -- no discrimination -- and you can hear the respect for the other person's point of view.?this? is what a debate is supposed to be. "we reallly feel like you should live fully and with enthusiasm in the commands of your faith but it is not in the role of the public servant else. the very alst thing government should do is punish women who make reproductive choices.i know senator kaine, you hold prolife views personally, but the very idea that a child that is almost born into the world could have their life taken from them is ineffinable to me. let's go inside iowa politics -- to talk about the people not trying to move into the white house.

vernon: i'm monica vernon, and i approve this message. congressman blum's smear campaign -- misleading and false. the truth -- monica vernon donated every pay raise to charity and helped build a homeless shelter for women and children, but multi-millionaire blum promised he'd take only half his salary. then in congress, blum broke his word and kept all the pay.

congressman blum's out for himself, not us. there are organizations at all levels working to get specific candidates elected to specific offices -- but two that most voters may not know much about are the democratic congressional campaign committee -- or "d-triple c" and the national republican congressional committee.they work against each other -- and each others' candidates -- to get as many democrats or republicans possible.they do it by mostly spending money on attack ads. ads.at last check -- open secrets says the n-r-c-c spent more than 14 million dollars in 2016 -- mostly on ads against democratic candidates candidatesthe d-triple c has spent more than 83- million dollars -- there are many more republicans in congress right now than democrats -- so they have more targets to spend agai. against.this week -- we had a chance to sit down with n-r-c-c chair -- oregon

welcome back.in the real story this week -- we're taking a deeper look at some of the most memorable moments... moments...from vice presidential debates. in 1988 -- vice president george h-w bush was trying to move into the white house -- and holding off michael dukakis.bush's v-p pick was 41-year old dan quayle -- who had been in congress for about
10:50 am
for the last seven.dukakis' vice president nominee was 67 year old texas senator lloyd bentson -- who had been elected to congress for the first time the year after quayle was born.that was the context when quayle tried to prove that he was ready to be one heartbeat away -- and it backfired. "i have as much experince in the congress as jack kennedy did when he sought the presidency. i will be prepared to deal with the people in the bush administration served with jack kennedy. i knew jack kennedy, jack kennedy was a friend of mine. senator, you're no jack kennedy. george bush -- and dan quayle would overcome that v-p debate stinger to win the white house. four years later -- --...in 1992 -- dan quayle was back on the stage with bill clinton's running mate -- al gore.but there was a third candidate in the debates that year.ross perot was pulling in enough support to be invited

presidential debates.that means that his running mate -- james stockdale -- joined quayle and gore in their undercard bouts.stockdale was a vietnam war hero -- with a medal of honor -- at the top of a long list of other awards -- for the lengths he went to leading prisoners of war and refusing to be part of enemy propaganda -- despite a lot of torture.but on the debate stage -- he seemed old -- confused -- and out of touch. "who am i? why am i here? i'm not a politician, knows that so don't expect me to use the language of the washington insider. 37 years in the navy and only one of them up there in washington. perot and stockdale got 19 percent of the vote -- but couldn't manage to win any states.potentially because of that split vote -- bill clinton and al gore edged out george h-w bush's re-election a. attempt.in 2008 -- senator barack obama edged out hillary
10:52 am
off against another war hero -- john mccain.their vice presidential picks -- joe biden and sarah palin met at washington university in st louis.biden had joined the obama ticket to shore up concerns that the much younger senator would have some kind of experienced politician in his administration -- palin joined the mccain ticket as the "folksy" appeal to the right flank of the party who probably would have preferred former arksans governor mike huckabee.palin's "plain spoken" personality thought would be recorded when she and biden first stepped onto the stage. "nice to meet you, hey can i call you joe?you can call me joe. obama and biden would knock off mccain and palin in 2008 -- and hold off mitt romney and current speaker of the house paul ryan in 2012. 2012.fast forward to this year -- where each vice presidential nominee has an extensive -- and maybe in other election cycles -- presidential -- political
10:53 am
there was a lot of interupting -- with tim kaine seemingly trying to back mike pence into a corner while trying to defend donald trump and not offend voters they're trying to court.but pence attacked kaine's canned lines -- like calling hillary clinton a "you're hired" president -- compared to donald trump being a "you're fired" president. it's been a favorite line on the campaign trail -- and now -- on the debate stage.but the line that got the most attention that got the but the line that got the most attention was pence's reaction to kaine's attack on how donald trump talks mexican immigrants. "when donald trump says mexicans are rapists and criminals, i can't imagine how you can defend that.you whipped out that mexican thing again. in the days after -- some of hispanic voters have said that just that line may cost pence. all humor aside -- generally -- voters don't vote for the bottom of the ticket -- it's the name on top that brings them in or sends them away.but with two major party candidates where recent polls say more than half of voters dislike both sides -- maybe --

something to justify a vote for either party. after the break...the best way to cast your 2016 vote right now! it's not uncommon for autistic kids to flap their hands. and so when i saw that, that was completely disqualifying. i'm a republican, but this election is so much bigger than party. my son max can't live in trump world. so i'm crossing party lines and voting for hillary. i don't always agree with her, but she's reasonable. she can work with people to solve problems. i want to be able to tell my kids that i did the right thing when it really mattered. i'm hillary clinton and i approve this message. you've worked hard. retirement's within reach, but congressman blum wants to raise the retirement age to 70. blum: we've got to raise the retirement age. blum would make it harder, voting to cut social security and privatize medicare.
