cedar rapids city officials are breaking ground on new flood protection later today.? cbs 2 news reporter stephanie johnson is live liveright now with a preview.st? stephanie?kelly-- i'm here on second avenue where mayor ron corbett and city manager jeff pomeranz will discuss the sinclair levee. ?the city's planned to build the levee since june 2015.the sinclair levee project will be the first permanent flood the levee will start at the african american museum and stretch all the way to tenth avenue where the alliant sub station is located. "until the whole east side system is complete we will have a 40 year flood protection level but we are building it to the 2008 flood volume and when all that system is complete on the east side we'll be protected. we won't suffer what we occurred in 2008." 2008."the project will also include a four feet deep

cedar rapids is prepared to spend $420,000 to clean up sand bags. the city used more than 10,000 tons of sand to protect the city from flooding. many areas were untouched by the cedar river leaving most sand bags dry. crews will start picking up the bags on the northwest side tomorrow. it will take crews roughly three weeks to collect all the sand bags. parents at cedar rapid kennedy high school are speaking out against thought was a good message from the school's principal. >> we don't joke about assaulting women. we don't make light of assaulting women. some say principal jason kline was picking a side in the presidential race - and using the school's morning announcements was not the place to do that.but kline says he was speaking out not to make a political statement, but because it was the right thing to do.
