tomorrow on cbs 2...four states will vote on whether to implement stricter gun laws this november.why that could be a model for other states looking to do the same.that's tomorr o . sure was a beautiful day, a little cloudy and definitely a lot of warmth. >> especially once that sun came out in the afternoon hours the temperature got up to 85 degrees in no time flat not only was it warm it was muggy out there too. looks like things are starting
10:15 pm
approaching on the north western horizon as that comes through here in a quiet fashion it will be cooling the temperatures down we're still on the warm side of that front, 75 degrees even at this hour of the night the winds are out of the southwest at 14 a few gusts higher than that, so that will hold the warm air in place until late tonight, when that next front comes on through. what a day it was. a normal high this time of year, 61 degrees, we made it to 85 degrees, one degree short of the record of 86 which was set in 1950. if you were 1950 further to the southeast, highs got up to 89 this afternoon both of those places did have record highs. it was a warm one out there, you could see that reflected in the temperatures from around the state today, the only place not to get into the mid-70s was way around spencer even there got up to 71 degrees and down around fort madison here
10:16 pm
the state there were temperatures that were as warm as 92 to 93 degrees late this afternoon tonight we're starting to see a little bit of a cool down out there, but not much, still in the low to mid- 60s up in the northwest, but the rest of us still enjoying temperatures that are in the 70s down about 10 degrees from where we were earlier on today. on our radar, here is our front located up in minnesota and wisconsin, you can see some thunderstorms up there there is nothing going on here in this front gets here late tonight most of the forcing will be off to the northwest of us we'll have lost the days heating so the instability won't be there for us to see any precipitation so i'm expecting to see a dry frontal passage. out ahead of that today, we had our winds out of the south and that's what sent those temperatures soaring now the front is on the move to the west, 4:00, 5:00 hit eastern iowa, 9:00, passed on to the southeast so there may be a
10:17 pm
early tomorrow morning but after that we'll clear out the skies and bring you another nice afternoon temperatures will be down about 15 to 20 degrees from what we saw today but we'll still be in the upper 60s and that's a good 7 or 8 degrees above what's typical. we'll go to our predicter here too as you can see way up in the north there is a slight chance for a shower or thunderstorm just after midnight but i think that's going to be few and far between, after that the front at 6 a.m. now advanced through south easter we'll start to see clearing in our skies during the afternoon hours should be a pretty nice day all though quite a bit cooler temperatures will be back in the upper 60s by afternoon and one nice thing about this week's weather is the fact all the rain should stay to the north and south of us, relatively dry forecast going through the rest of the week. you could certainly see tonight's rain is way to the north of us we'll enjoy clear skies for most of the night so again, looks like temperatures will range from 53 to about 61
10:18 pm
cool air gets established here, a few clouds around early in the day mostly sunny in the afternoon, temperatures will be in the mid and upper 60s, maybe as warm as 70 in iowa city and 72 in washington and your extended forecast has another front coming through thursday and friday, that will send the temperatures below normal, in the 60s dry conditions excellent weather to get out and enjoy the fall. next on cbs 2 news how state leaders are working keep prescription drugs out of
