a noticeable change. today we were still around 70 degrees, the official high in cedar rapids 69. 64 now. still clouds passing through the skies, that is one thing we noticed more of today than what we've seen the past couple of days. all the rain should stay well south of us tonight. radar does show a few sprinkles in washington county. but other than that the rest of the area is dry and our forecast looks to be pretty quiet and dry now on through the upcoming weekend. tomorrow expect a cooler day, temperatures down 10 to 15 degrees. by friday morning freezing temperatures a possibility and scattered frost looks likely. so tomorrow, getting up to a temperature of 44 but it's not going to go up much. we'll end up around 56 degrees, with afternoon sunshine and that cool weather will last on into friday. more coming up. october 19th is a day nationally dedicated to stopping gun violence among

husiinger shows us with more on what one school is doing to get the message across. >> reporter: the next week students at washington high school will have a conversation and choice, to sign this pledge to end gun violence and prevent a tragedy this school is all too familiar with. it takes a split second for a gun to change everything. >> one of my close friends played basketball here. he got shot because, like, of his friends, they were playing with a gun and they were not supposed to. >> reporter: accidental or intentional, the decision to involve guns escalates the violence. >> we have had a lot of gun violence with teens, like a lot of teens have guns and i don't feel like that is right. it's unsafe. >> reporter: now washington high school is putting the topic in focus. >> every student at washington high school and every staff member are going to stop and pause and engage in very robust conversation and dialogue

it. particularly among young people. >> reporter: students are writing poems, essays and songs to help fuel the conversation and wider social media campaign. >> i think the social media piece is going to really drive them. that is how they communicate washington high school , i >> i pledge as a student at washington high school, i pledge i will never bring a gun to school. i will never use a gun to settle a personal problem or dispute. >> reporter: the message is strong. >> it's not worth it. it's not worth taking someone's life o because of a gun. it's not worth it. >> reporter: the interim principal dr. carlos grant says he wants students to understand the importance of reporting illegal weapons both on and off campus to help save young lives. covering the corridor in cedar rapids, cbs 2 news. this year three cedar rapids teens have been charged with gun related offensings and three victims died as a result.

police say was an accidental shooting. a 13-year-old boy is charged with involuntary manslaughter, carrying weapons and interference with official acts. the gun that killed parks wasn't found but a second gun not related to shooting was found near the scene. >> reporter: the iowa city community school district is trying to make it easier for parents to get answers for >> reporter: karen, parents in the iowa city community school district are keeping up with a lot of changes. now there's a new web page to help them out. matt larson has two girls, one in first grade. the other is 3 years old. >> wednesday is dad's day off. >> reporter: larson says he and his wife are following the district's conversation about school boundaries. >> there are plans floating

school district officials have also listened to parents who don't want to see elementary school students being split up. all kids at an elementary school will now go to the same junior high and high school. right now there are a couple of elementary schools that do split as kids move on but that will change with the attendance zones in 2019. early voting is happening to make sure voters have some peace of mind at the polls.the that the allegations of a rigged election are ?not that the allegations of a rigged election are not happening in the u.s. the office for democratic institutions and human rights took a closer look at the the len county voting system. the poland based organization reached out to the iowa secretary of state for a list of counties to observe testing on the voting machines. it began earlier this week. polling locations in the county

lowdown. >> we're going to more of a northerly wind flow aloft. it's important because it's going to finally pull in colder air, but it's going to only last a couple of days, by the weekend another nice warm-up. i like how it's working out. 64 degrees now after a high of 69 in cedar rapids. winds are north at 10 miles an hour. this cold air is going to deepen as we go through the night and tomorrow. that will send highs tomorrow back into the 50s. a noticeable change in temperatures expected in there's our current readings after after the highs up around 70 especially in the central and southern counties we're back into the lower 60s in the northwest. 61 now in waterloo. dubuque 64. still 64 in cedar rapids and iowa city, 65 degrees. checking out the radar, not much showing up in eastern iowa but get into extreme southeastern iowa and parts of illinois some light showers are showing up but these are

of our southernmost counties so. maybe a sprinkle in washington county but that should be about it as far as precip goes. still though a lot of clouds covering up eastern iowa. looks like those are going to be around for the majority of the night. later on tonight and especially tomorrow morning, drier air comes in from the northwest. that will get rid of the clouds. our predictor at 7:00 tonight, still shows overcast conditions around much of the area. we're going to push you out until 6:00 in the morning and there's where you can start to see that ea our northern counties. then as we go through the morning hours tomorrow that continues to push on to the southeast along with the cooler and drier air. by afternoon we are back into sunshine, it will be kind of deceptive because temperatures are going to be sharply colder around eastern iowa. and here's why -- it's already down in the 40s up here in minnesota. that air mass is moving on to the southeast. and by the time we get to tomorrow afternoon, temperatures are expected to be

3:00. then tomorrow night frost and freezing temperatures a possibility. our model shows 36 but i think more like 32. then friday another cool day as we start often the weekend with temperature somewhere in the mid-50s. but beyond that you can see it's getting closer to 70 in nebraska and that is the warm air that returns to the area on southerly winds over the weekend. at this point we still see major weather systems that would produce any precipitation. so our forecast for rain which now goes all the way up through moay conditions in eastern iowa. so some pretty uneventful weather the next few days. tonight's forecast has cooler conditions by morning. lows in the northwest, where there will be breaks in the clouds by morning. should be back in the upper 30s. rest of us 40 to 45 degrees. as we go into tomorrow, it's mostly sunny later on in the day but the temperature not going to respond too much.
