10:30 am
an in depth look at the people and events that shape our community.this is iowa in focus.this week -- the presidential candidates go toe to toe for the last time.we sit down with both candidates to run for iowa's senate seat. welcome to iowa in focus -- we're giving context to what happens in the headlines and on the campaign trail. trail.that starts with the barnstorm. voters in iowa have already be throughout the state -- but one of the biggest issues is the feeling that it may not matter.donald trump has been talking about how he feels the election is rigged.on twitter we've seen tweets like these -- where he says: "of course there is large scale voter fraud happening on and before election day -- why do republican leaders deny what is going on? so naive."and -- "the election is absolutely being rigged by the dishonest and distored media pushing crooked hillary - but also at many poling places - sad."
10:31 am
we're going to have a whole different country. that kind of discussion lead to iowa governor terry branstad getting involved.his son -- eric -- is donald trump's iowa state director. director.branstad backs trump up on the first part of that last tweet -- that the media is slanting the election in hillary clinton's favor.iowa secretary of state paul pate is responsible for running the election in iowa -- his strong rebuttal has much more to do with the integrity of the process itself. "a lot of people are very skeptical becayse they see th they see what they consdier to be colustion betweent eh clinton machin.e i'm telling you iowans can be confident in the election system. we have the checks and balances. we've worked on a bipartisan basis and our office and the local county offices are open to anyone who sees any potential problems so we can address it. later in the week -- they both
10:32 am
could throw the election -- not the process itself.all that talk has pushed vice presidential nominee mike pence back into his role smoothing over the rough edges that trump creates sometimes. sometimes. "look we'll respect the outcome of this election, john. i don't think any american should ever attempt to make any american nervous to exercise their franchise to vote." in the last few elections -- the outgoing president hasn't been openly embraced by the person running to place from their party.in 2016 -- president obama is extremely popular with democrats -- so he jumped in on this conversation about the election being stolen from the . voters. "i have never seen, in my lifetime or in modern political history, any presidential candidate trying to discredit the elections and
10:33 am
votes have even taken place. it's unprecedented. it happens to be based on no facts;." then -- donald trump surprised a lot of people by rolling out a policy that a lot of people actively support -- term limits in congress.he calls it "draining the swamp." "i am proposing a term limit of 6 years for members of the house and 12 years for members political failure and special interests collusion must and will finallly come to an end." that also is the exact same proposal that iowa first district congressman rod blum has put forward.his staff tells me that there was no coordination on setting up trump's proposal. the middle of the week hosted the third and final presidential debate of the cycl. cycle.we didn't hear anything
10:34 am
limits proposal.instead he doubled down on the idea of a wall between the united states and mexico -- and getting rid of the millions of illegal immigrants estimated to be in the united states right now. "once the border is secured, we'll make a determination as to the rest but we have some bad hombres here and we're going to get them out.when it comes to the wall, that donald talks about building, he went to mexico, met with the mexican president -- he didn't even raise it -- he choked. and then got into a twitter war with t m because the president said we're not paying for that wall. but the big news came when he came up short of agreeing to accept the results of the election -- no matter what they are. are. "i do you make the same commitement that you will absolutely accept the results of thsi election. i will look at it at the time. i'm not looking at anything else now, i'll look at it at the time. what i've seen is so bad are you saying your not prepared now to commit to that principle. what i'm saying is i'll tell you at the time.
10:35 am
on a lighter note -- some of the people who cover the election are getting their shot on tv.fox news anchor megyn kelley is executive producing a new show called "embeds" -- where it tells the story of five young reporters trying to report on the presidential campaign trail. they're expected to have cameos throughout the series from real political figures -- and they've been filming in iowa.the first episode of set to air on election day. let's go inside iowa politics -- to talk about the people not trying to move into the democrat stacey walker and republican adam jensen faced off in their league of women voters of linn county forum for the district two seat on the board of supervisors.it's mostly about introducing themselves to voters -- but also showing an understanding of county issues -- and how they'd handle them. "i hope that they see i have an extensive background not only in the business sector but i have the educational and private sector all rolled up into one bundle.""just this year we saw the linn county board of supervisors take up
10:36 am
18-thousand citizens of linn co" county."this is the seat that linda langston used to have -- and that amy johnson filled through appointment. for years -- iowa lawmakers have debated legalizing medical marijuana.right now -- cannabis oil -- is legal in very limited cases -- but advocates hope they can make more progress this legislative session.steffi lee explains the upcoming debate at the capi. capitol. iowa passed the medical cannabidiol act in 2014 - making it legal to have and use cannabis oil to treat severe epilepsy.but since it's set to expire next july - it leaves many iowans who depend on the oil wondering - what's next?for sally gaer -"we're asking for people to open their hearts and minds and look at the science."she's asking lawmakers to ensure that her daughter can get the help she needs without legal roadblocks. margaret suffers from epilepsy - but more than

using cannabidiol purchased from another state - immediately she started sleeping through the night. gaer is a part of iowans for medical cannabis - a group pushing for expanded medical marijuana laws in iowa.we would really like to see medical cannabis all forms of cannabis grown produced tested and dispensed in iowa by iowans for iowans so that people that need it out of options with their diseases -- that have tried everything that have nowhere else to turn can get access in iowa."a bill that would've allowed iowans to produce and dispense cannabis oil - and covering more conditions than just epilepsy died in the house last session.the bill that we ended up with which would've teamed up with minnesota was the best we could do last year."governor terry branstad says he's willing to look at research and possibly expanding current law."i intend to work with the legislature as well as the office of drug control as we look at what is the appropriate thing to do."gaer

expansion will do their own research to benefit iowans like margaret. "it's not about getting high - it's about easing pain and suffering. governor branstad says he is still opposed to legalizing marijuana for recreational use. gaer emphasizes that's not what her group is advocating for either. after the break...we focus on iowa's senate race -- with the democrat mounting senator chuck grassley's

it's not uncommon for autistic kids to flap their hands. and so when i saw that, that was completely disqualifying. i'm a republican, but this election is so much bigger than party. my son max can't live in trump world. so i'm crossing party lines and voting for hillary. i don't always agree with her, but she's reasonable. and she's smart. she can work with people to solve problems. i want to be able to tell my kids that i did the right thing i'm hillary clinton and i approve this message. before supreme court justice antonin scalia died -- no one thought the iowa senate race was going to be terribly exciting.after scalia died -- and senator grassley decided against holding hearings for president obama's replacement -- patty judge entered the race.we sat down with her -- and started by talking about the permanent flood protection that cedar rapids doesn't have
