the massive manhunt is over. oklahoma authorities shoot and kill the man accused of murdering two family members and shooting two officers. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the fbi has obtained a search warrant to go through the newly discovered e-mails belonging to a top aide hillary clinton. fullback director james comey alerted congress to the e-mails friday less than two weeks before the election, against the advice of the justice department. comey is now facing stiff criticism for the timing of his announcement. in an op-ed piece from "the washington post" former attorney general eric holder said comey made a mistake and wrote, it is up to the director to correct his mistake, not for the sake of a political candidate or

protect our system of justice and best serve the american people. hen daniels is here in new york. good morning. >> good morning. the fbi looked through thosands of newly discovered e-mails that were found on the laptop of clinton's top aide huma abedin's estranged husband, former new york congressman anthony weiner. the late october surprise is shaking up the tight presidential race between clinton and donald trump just eight days to the election. as hillary clinton tried to move past the latest chapter into her e-mail scandal. >> i'm not stopping now. we are just getting warmed up, >> reporter: donald trump thanked the disgraced former new york congressman at the center of the investigation. >> we never thought we were going to say thank you to anthony weiner. >> reporter: running mate mike pence praised james comey for alerting congress about the newly discovered e-mails last week against the wishes of attorney general loretta lynch. >> the fbi stepping forward at .

investigation. that's not what the letter said. the letter was so confusing, that it was hard to know exactly what it said. >> reporter: harry reid went a step further accusing comey of breaking the law. in a letter to the fbi director, reid wrote, i am writing to inform you that my office has determined that these actions ma bars fbi officials from using their official authority to influence an election. despite the fbi announcement, many democratic voters say their minds are already made up. >> we just love that she fights for women. >> the level of that e-mail is nothing to the craziness level of a guy like trump. >> reporter: in the latest cbs news poll, just 5% of democrats say they are less likely to support clinton now.

could be investigated? >> well, the bulk of voters said it wouldn't change but that is because partisans have largely already decided. there are very unsure few voters out there. however, what may happen it may hurt hillary clinton's ability to go beyond her base or pull in some of those voters who had been unsure or on the fence rather than costing her support that she already has. >> reporter: now donald trump has struggled to galvanize republican support in red states. what is new on that front? in arizona, we find him in a tight race with hillary clinton. this is a state that usually goes republican. the story is similar in many other states. donald trump has a lot of republican support but not quite enough so that is one of his challenges in the last week. >> reporter: his other challenge is winning over his must-win battleground states like north carolina. >> right. here we see in north carolina, hillary clinton with a slight lead.

when we look at the early vote, and many voters have already cast their ballots here as in many other states, we see that among registrants, democrats are tracking ahead of republicans. so donald trump has more work to do. >> reporter: more than 20 million people have cast their ballots already. we don't know exactly who they voted for, but what other clues can we see in that? >> democrats in many places look like they are on pace with what they want their targets to be, however, the election day vote, that might put more pressure on organizing for the trump campaign. >> reporter: it's not over yet. our cbs news elections director anthony salvanto, thanks for your time. coming up on "cbs this morning," we will talk with donald trump's campaign manager kellyanne conway. a week-long manhunt for michael vance wanted in a series of violent crimes in oklahoma is over. vance was killed in a shoot-out with a local deputy in western oklahoma last night. the sheriff was wounded in the gun battle, but is expected to survive. vance was wanted on multiple charges, including two counts of

vance had a hit list of people linked to a sexual assault case against him. he referenced in a video released on the internet. overseas now. there are no deaths or serious injuries reported following the latest earthquake to hit central italy, but yesterday's quake forced more people to evacuate. it's estimated some 11,000 residents will need assistance following the newest quake and the one last week. some of the worse damage is reported in norcia. johnathan vigliotti reports. >> reporter: audio from surveillance video captured the rumbling of the powerful 6.6 earthquake, as it hit central and southern italy early sunday morning. by daybreak, the damage from the strongest quake to hit the country in nearly 36 years was visible. >> it's a very sad day for my home country. >> reporter: in norcia, one of the hardest hit areas,

buildings fell to the ground. it was felt in rome where buildings rocked and chandeliers sway. official say aftershocks are a major concern. a group of nuns ran for their lives when their church began to shake. firefighters cleared debris from roads to allow emergency vehicles access to the injured. entire villages that were once popular tourist attractions are now piles of rubble. in the mountainous region plumes of dust billowed above trees ca devastation on the ground. italy is recovering from a earthquake in august that killed nearly 300 people. there were no deaths from this latest quake. many people are afraid to go back indoors out of fear that there will be stronger and more powerful aftershocks. johnathan vigliotti, cbs news, london. federal officials say a rare but violent engine failure on an american airlines jet prompted an investigation of some electric engines.

the runway at chicago's o'hare international airport when a disk broke apart inside one engine. the pilots were able to stop the jet but a fire broke out. all 170 people on board were evacuated. some sustained minor injuries. parts of the jet engine were hurled half a mile away. the world series is headed back to cleveland. on the cusp of elimination, the chicago cubs got their first world series win at wrigley field since 1945. >> there will be a game six. cubs win it 3-2. >> chicago reliever aroldis chapman got the first eight-out save of his big league career to hold off the cleveland indians. >> chappy came in and did something i guess he has never done before, so, yes, there are all kinds of drama out there. when you have a guy like that can pitch that many significant

tide, america's #1 detergent surveillance video shows a tourist's close call at a chinese zoo after he climbed into the giant panda enclosure. the animal makes up and grabs the man's leg. they wrestle and the man falls. finally he is able to get free. the tourist apparently was trying to impress two women. both the panda and tourists are okay but i'm going to impress that the panda is not impressed. no word on whether or not the women were. a night at opera ends with a security scare and how chris christie got passed over in the vp stakes.

on the morning newsstand. the "new york post" reports that donald trump had asked chris christie to be his running mate. sources tell "the post" that trump's aides got him to withdraw the offer. most of trump's advisers pressured him to pick mike pence. they argued that pence would unify the party and appeal to evangelical christians. the bismarck tribune reports on a possible drowning at the site of a north dakota oil pipeline protest. someone in a canoe disappeared sunday. the incident occurred near a dakota access protest camp. search and rescue teams are at the scene. weekend demonstrations over the pipeline remained peaceful. "variety" reports a new claim of sexual assault from one of alfred hitchcock's leading ladies. in her new memoir, actress tippi hedren says hitchcock drew obsessed with her during the filming in 1930s. she said in their next movie,
