happen again. mr. obama and russian president vladimir putin come face-to-face. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. president-elect trump is back in new york this morning where he'll continue working to fill top posts in his administration. over the weekend, he spoke to a number of potential cabinet officials, friends, and foe. hena daniels is in new york with the details. good morning, hena. >> good morning, anne-marie. >> reporter: president-elect donald trump assessed several more contenders for those posts including chris christie, rudy giuliani, and former critic mitt romney along with retired marine corps general james mattis who has emerged as the leading candidate for defense secretary. president-elect donald trump capped another day of high profile meetings in new jersey and more cabinet appointments to come. >> we have made a couple of deals but we will let you know

job-seekers who visited mr. trump on sunday was former new jersey governor chris christie. >> a very talented man. a great guy. >> reporter: the former new york mayor rudy giuliani was under consideration for secretary of state. the president-elect is also considering former rival mitt romney for the post. the two spoke for over an hour saturday. >> i would tell you that it was -- it was not only a cordial meeting, but also it was a very substantive meeting. remain concerned about those already offered key roles in trump's administration, including attorney general nominee jeff sessions. the alabama senator has been accused of making racially insensitive remarks in the past. >> he's going to need a very thorough vetting. many of those statements are old but they are still trouble. >> reporter: trump's chief of staff reince priebus defended

good human being that we are talking about. >> reporter: the president-elect has earned bipartisan praise for nominating mike pompeo as cia director and along with sessions, the kansas representative would need to be confirmed by the senate. trump ace transition team says former texas governor rick perry will meet with trump later today and is being considered for a cabinet post including defense, energy, and veterans affairs. >> hena daniels in new york, thank you so much, hena. vice president-elect mike pence says he wasn't offended by a message delivered to him by the cas "hamilton." >> we truly hope this show has aspired you to uphold our american values and to work on behalf of all of us. all of us. >> pence attended the show friday night with his daughter. the message, calling for diversity, was delivered during the curtain call. >> i heard the remarks that were made at the end and, you know, it -- you know, what i can tell

was said. i will leave it to others whether it was the appropriate venue to say it. >> pence called the show a terrific presidential production. trump tweeted and asked the cast of "hamilton" apologize. coming up on "cbs this morning," "hamilton" actor brandon victor dixon who delivered the message to pence responds for the first time to mr. trump's demand for an apology. president obama is back at the white house after completing his last scheduled overseas visit as president. mr. obama returned this morning following the last stop on his trip, the asia-pacific trade summit in peru. at errol barnett reports, preident obama met with russian president vladimir putin and likely their last face-to-face meeting before mr. obama leaves office. >> reporter: it was a brief exchange between president obama and vladimir putin.

on sovereignty and this is the first meeting of the two men since the election of donald trump who repeatedly praised putin's strengths. >> we have demonstrated what is possible when our two countries work together. >> reporter: in a formal meeting with chinese president xi jinping, mr. obama put an optimistic spin on cooperation between the two nations. the president said leaders from across the asia pacific had decided to move ahead with the transpacific partnership, a trade deal opposed by president-elect trump. throughout his three-nation tour this week, the president has had about the incoming president. >> people should take a wait and see approach in how much is policy proposals once in the white house, once he is sworn in, matches up with some of the rhetoric of his campaign. >> reporter: now the president suggested mr. trump may be willing to adjust current trade deals and that the world should

but privately, the white house is deeply concerned much of mr. obama's foreign policy achievements over the past eight years, could be erased. errol barnett, cbs news, lima, peru. police in san antonio, texas, are looking for a suspect in the deadly shooting of a police officer. detective benjamin marconi was sitting in his squad car yesterday morning outside of police headquarters. he was writing a ticket when another driver pulled over, alked up to marconi and shot him twice in the head. police say information regarding the murder. they are also looking for a black car in connection with the murder. police in st. louis shot and killed a suspect who ambushed one of their officers. the suspect had opened fire on police. the officer who was shot was sitting in traffic last night when a car pulled up next to him and a gunman started shooting. the officer was hit twice in the face, but is expected to survive. demonstrators protesting the dakota access pipeline clashed

it's estimated there were about 400 demonstrators who tried to cross a bridge on a state highway. at least one protester was arrested. the pipeline is being built to carry oil from north dakota to illinois. opponents fear a leak could contaminate drinking water. a storm system has moved into the northeast bringing cold temperatures and heavy snow. the heaviest snow hit downwind from lake ontario and lake in some parts of new york, it was reported 15 inches of snow. in michigan, 13 inches fell. winter storm warnings are posted in parts of new york and vermont. in california, the issue is heavy rain. flooding is a possibility in southern california. flash flood warnings have been issued for wildfire burn areas. the storm has the potential to be the largest in the area this fall. northern california is also being hit by rain. workers at chicago's o'hare airport say they will walk off the job this thanksgiving holiday.

"wall street journal" notes that beastie y joined others protesting vanedism in new york city yesterday. it happened in the park that is named after horovitz's late band mate adam yauch. the "chicago tribune" reports on that teenagers are accused of murdering a 15-year-old grandson. police say the 16-year-old boy and 17-year-old boy killed javon wilson on friday during an argument over borrowed shoes. he was the grandson of representative danny davis. the "atlanta

up wildfires in georgia. state crews got more than six dozen reports of new fires over the weekend. crews from across the country are trying to contain a fire that has burned more than 40 square miles in northern georgia. incoming chief of staff reince priebus said mr. trump will imply with all laws and no wrongdoing. a health insurance merger starts today. the 48 billion dollar anthem/cigna deal is the larger merger in the health insurance industry to date. toys "r" us has temporarily stopped selling a tonka truck after one of the trucks burst into flames. a was taking the truck home when they say it caught fire, all but destroying their pickup. toys "r" us says it appears to be an isolated incident and has taken the toy off its shelves while it investigates. the latest "harry potter" spin-off was the box office winner in its debut weekend. fantastic beasts and where to find them brought in an estimated 75 million in ticket sales. it's meant to kick off a five-film kickoff based on j.k. rowling's creation.

the civil rights group, the southern poverty law center, says there have been at least 700 cases of hateful harassment or intimidation since the election. carter evans has more. >> reporter: from swastikas baseball field and a playground, to pennsylvania high school students shouting hate messages in the hallway and a throwback to the days of segregation in a bathroom in north california. >> i can't explain to you. that i loved four years and not feel safe. >> reporter: according to new numbers from the fbi, reported hate crimes were up almost 7% in 2015, that includes a 67% jump
