in the south of waterloo, additional once around des moines and temperatures especially north of highway 30 just cold enough aloft we could see a brief period of light snow or snow showers. nothing worse than a dusting, nothing should cause any problems on the roads. by tomorrow morning at the system has moved east and we will have clouds remaining, temperatures around 33-34 early tomorrow morning. if you are out about commuting or shopping. later in the day, temperatures should eventually make it to around but i think a lot of clouds around so not very bright tomorrow. temperatures in the seasonal range, upper 30s to lower 40. right now fire investigators are trying to figure out what caused a massive fire in central city this morning. it happened at an oil recycling business on isle street. police, fire and has met all responded. matt hammill is there, explaining why it is still a dangerous scene for first

anybody here in central city planned to spend a quiet thanksgiving. i want to move out of the way and show you what is going on. we still have hot spots, still have flareups at the site. a huge explosion, about 8:00 this morning. we are finding out that crews got here and discovered that there were flames shooting into the air. right now as we said, some hotspots and utility crews still here working on all of this. being very careful about all of it. people living there by told us they heard a huge blast and several others, then flames shot into the air. smoke could be seen for at least 5 miles. no reports of any people injured in the explosions. one firefighter did have to be rushed to the hospital for medical issues. one neighbor says she never imagined something like this could happen so close to home.

very scary. we were standing at the back door when some of the explosions were going off and you could feel the heat standing way over here. it is crazy, very scary. i had a major panic attack until i figured out for sure what was going on. >>reporter: life at iowa gold and central city. the air smells pungent but we just talk to the firefighter, jim o'leary, he says he wants everyone to know the air earlier today, they had asked people to shut off furnaces, close their windows and stay inside because they were concerned there may be toxic fumes. the air has been checked, everything is fine. they will now have the state investigators come in to try to find the cause of the fire. reporting live in central city, matt hammill cbs 2 news. we would like to thank the viewers who sent us pictures. when you see news, be sure to

host tips, pictures and videos to our facebook page. the salvation army's famous red kettles out all across the quarter. the organization trying to raise $805,000 through their annual kettle campaign. how you can get involved. >>reporter: the holidays are an important time for the salvation army. >> during the christmas camping this year is really important to us for next year. to make sure we are meeting the needs of our community. >>reporter: they can't do that without volunteers. with more than 8000 hours to cover and only a quarter of the time filled they are thankful for dedicated regulars. all the shifts filled out making sure they get where they want when they want. >> i like this because it is my neighborhood. i live not too far from here and i know a lot of the people.

>>reporter: food, family, football and fitness. although heartfelt isn't the first thing a people as goes minds when you wake up on thanksgiving day, this morning there were roughly 2000 people in downtown cedar rapids getting it in a little cardio while supporting a good cause. nothing wrong with an early morning run, ask these guys. when you can run with loved ones on a holiday to support the ameran that is gravy. >> a family tradition now people come out and run and volunteer. we have a lot of families that are volunteering together and going home and enjoying things together. >>reporter: the american heart association became the charity associated with the turkey trot last year, and they have loved the result. >> last year there was about 1000 runners and walkers. this year there is 2000. >> they are the only ones looking to make it as much of a thanksgiving day stable as a second piece of pumpkin pie.

holiday shopping rush. this is a live look right now above lindel mall, they opened about 7 minutes ago. managers tell cbs 2 news every store got last minute shipments for black friday so they should be ready for the early shoppers tonight. linda will be open until 1:00 a.m.. the mall will be open at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. several other stores are open mall is also open tonight until midnight.e re-open at six a-m on black friday.tanger outlet center in williamsburg will be open until 10 friday night. in iowa city -- the area's chamber of commerce is rewarding shoppers for taking their holiday lists to local stores.12 businesses are participating in the buy here holiday blitzchamber representatives say there is no purchase necessary to sign up. tickets go into three drawings in december.there will be two 500 dollar prize

tomorrow on cbs 2 this morning - thanksgiving may be over but the holiday season is just getting started, how you can give back to a corridor organization in need of your musical talents - at whatever level. that's tomorrow on cbs 2. it's time for . we saw the turkey trot before. if you're running this morning, it wasn't so bad. >> good running conditions, dressed in the right clothes you could run until tomorrow like this. or power to you if that was one of you out there this morning. now that the sky is dark and around eastern iowa we have noticed a few rain and snow showers showing up on the radar. you can see these are pretty

the air dry at the surface but i'm i expect around waterloo some light showers occurring there between vinton and waterloo. possible that there could be a few snowflakes mixed in. if you notice pink in there and more around cedar rapids, mix precipitation will be a possibility as this disturbance comes across this evening. nothin snow is concerned a nothing that would cause the issues on the roads. tomorrow morning the whole thing has pushed out of here and that will leave us with mostly cloudy skies and chilly conditions to start the day. i look for temperatures to be around 33-34 degrees with westerly winds at 5 miles per hour. this is the only disturbance in the middle of the country tonight, not very impressive. most of the snow accumulation will be in minnesota and wisconsin. this will move pretty quickly off to the east. we will get it out of here by early tomorrow morning.

stubborn once again. i expect mostly cloudy skies to be with us all day long tomorrow. are disturbance that is causing this is located in kansas, not a very impressive one on the weather charts tonight. the dynamics a week in the moisture is extremely limited. it's moving at a pretty good clip, it won't take it long to cross the midwest. we will go to a predictor, at 7:00 tonight starting to show light precipitation. the model is in grasping what we are showing on the radar. i think there might be a little that most the action looks like it will be a long and north highway 30 as we go through the midnight hour. after that the whole thing fizzles out. at 6:00 tomorrow morning we are in clouds but at noontime showing a lot of clouds. eventually late in the day there is the possibility that a few breaks in the clouds could occur especially in the west

whole thing kicks off to the east. them by saturday we expect sunshine back in the skies. if you're going to the game and iowa city tomorrow, kickoff temperature should be about 41 degrees. skies mostly cloudy winds out of the west at ten and the kick off at 2:30. you can see temperatures go up quite a bit this weekend. southerly wind returns. high temperatures 52 and 54 sunday and 57 monday, way above normal. front sweeps through by wednesday and thursday, down were -- downward and back into the 30s for highs. as far as precipitation not much with the system but the one late sunday and monday produces colder temperatures could produce rain around some parts of eastern iowa. model showing anywhere from half to three quarters of an inch. something to watch over the next couple days. in the north low temperatures
