another dreary day and for the commute it will be dry and cloudy. temperatures will hover around 33-34 degrees. later in the afternoon, not much rise with temperatures and we should hover around 36-37 for the high temperature. in the next 24 hours, meteorological winter is december and into january and february. we are starting things off like that for december 1. police havcl situation in marion the force two elementary schools and the lockdown. police tell cbs 2 news there was never threat to the public. they'd locked down emerson elementary and saint joseph as a precaution. community members are

new information right nowabout a north carolina police officer who shot and killed a man in september -- prompting days of violent protests. police - "drop the gun!" wife - "he doesn't have a gun."that's video from keith scott's wife. today - a judge decided ?not to file charges against the officer.he says he saw keith scott marijuana joint and holding a gun.the video shows the officer repeatedly telling scott to put his gun down. ."the reality is that mr. scott could have raised his gun and killed officer vincent or another officer before any of them could have reacted to the threat." the case gained national attention after scott's wife shared cellphone video she took of the moments leading up to the killing. the family says they have not yet decided whether to file civil charges.

cbs 2 news live at 5 the death toll is up to 7 people and families are searching for massive wildfire as arson. more than 400-emergency workers are doing what they can to put out flames--while bracing for the possibility of spot fires.a terrifying 24 hours has now left at least 400 homes and businesses destroyed. strong storms and heavy rain moved through last night - possibly helping firefighters. the blaze is only 10-percent contained. more than 14- thousand people have been shelters. now, many are praying their loved ones are safe.michael reed hasn't heard from his wife or two daughters since monday night as they tried to escape. "michael reed/wife and daughters missing in fires: "i've called the other shelters here, they said she isn't there...just hoping for a miracle."flash"personally i think i've lost my house but you know things can be rebuilt." the mayor of gatlinburg had his own home and business of 31 years burn to the ground.

asking people to plan a vacation there to help the town get back on its feet. you can help people in the corridor stay warm this coming winter.cbs 2 news reporter mellaney moore is here to talk about preparation going on right now in johnson county. in the coming weeks, the shelter house in iowa city wants to increase their services to help keep people warm.they hope the community will help them make it happen.the shelter house gives people experiencing homelessness short-term housing and helps them get staff say this time of year, exposure to the elements can cause frostbite and even death. the last two years, they've opened an emergency shelter for those who can not or will not use shelter house.the "out of the cold campaign" is looking to raise 45 thousand dollars to support additional services and the emergency shelter. 08:34:26 we've had a lot of anecdotal data that states that we haven't had anybody from the streets of iowa city having frostbite and certainly not dying in the last two

november flakes, are they small? >> from what i saw, they had decent size and the taste is right on for early december and we are good with that. later in the year they get stale. >> they are old by then. >> these are fresh in the first we have seen around this year. there will be more as we go through the night. there might be just a dusting in the northern counties, but that will be about it with this particular system. on the radar, you can see the showers are not overly organized and they just kind of come and go as they rotate through the area. this is a pretty weak disturbance and just strong enough to squeeze out the available moisture. the most concentrated band of showers extends from southwestern dubuque county back through monticello and back to cedar rapids and down to use -- down to iowa city and then over toward black --

snow that will end after midnight tonight and that will be pretty much it for the next couple of days. and, the snow is running a little late. we did the back in the record books and 84 out of the past 124 years, we have seen measurable snow by this time, november 30. not this year, just a few flakes and we will consider that a trace. typically the first one inch of snow occurs around december 1 and we won't have that. we are running late on the snow tomorrow morning, that will be gone and we still have clouds around. it looks like temperatures to start the day should be in the range of 33-34 degrees. this center -- is centered around the great lakes states and the trough extends west from that and that is what is squeezing out the moisture in the upper-level disturbance there. as it moves by, it takes the actual snow with it. clouds will hang tough for the next 24 hours and i don't see

friday. here is the predictor and at 7:00 it shows a few isolated snow showers around. by midnight, those have moved to the east and by tomorrow morning i think the snow showers will be gone. we will still have clouds. here we are at noon and there are no big changes and a lot of clouds around. by tomorrow night, we are still in the clouds and with the absence of sunshine tomorrow, the temperatures will not go up 40s for the high temperatures. now, i want to take you up in the satellite and you can see this coming off the pacific. there are three disturbances and one of those is causing the snow today and another one could produce light snow on saturday and sunday. another one behind that is a bigger system. we have two models here and this is what the u.s. one is showing. it is showing it going from western iowa and producing heavy snow through the plains states and into western minnesota. the european model takes a different track and it runs a further to the south and

all we can tell you is that we have to wait a couple of more days to get the track ironed out. the system will impact some part of the mixed wet -- the midwest by next week. temperatures around 31-33 for the low was scattered snow showers around for the next few hours. on the south end, temperatures are expected to bottom out around 33 in cedar rapids and 35 in sigourney. again, scattered snow showers in spots. for the north tomorrow, more clouds around and a cold day with temperatures in the mid- 30s. 35-36 should do it. the southern counters -- county slightly warmer with temperatures at 36-38. there will be westwind to 10- 15. the next chance of snow is late saturday night and early in the day on sunday. we warm up to 43 on monday and then the next storm comes in producing rain or snow in parts
