into a central iowa walmart. three people were killed - and two others were sent to the hospital - including the driver..it happened in pella - authorities tell us that an older man was behind the wheel of a pickup truck when it slammed into the building's entrance.police there say the truck was traveling at a high rate of speed and they do believe the crash was an accident at this point.two of the people who were killed worked at the walmart store. pella's police chief says everyone is rattled by what happened. "you have a number of people come to walmart shopping, grocery shopping christmas shopping and have a tragedy like this happen right in the midst of the holiday season is just a terrible thing."the store was closed for the rest of the day yesterday - and people were being asked to say away from the scene.this morning -- officials are not releasing the names of the victims or the driver. new details this morning on a deadly standoff - in tacoma washington.the man that shot and killed a veteran police officer - was using two children as shields during the hours-long confrontation .last night hundreds of people

vigils that were held to honor the fallen officer.reginald gutierrez -- who went by jake -- was the man killed in the line of duty.he had been working for the tacoma police department for 17 years.a memorial fund had been set up through wells fargo bank. "we love our police officers and we know that every day when they go to work there is a chance they won't come home. please pray for us and help us stay united. we love respect and value our officers." the suspect has not yet been named - but did have multiple weapons in the house and an extensive criminal record. today, marks the one year since the san bernardino terror attack that left 14 people dead and 22 others hurt. the husband and wife who carried out the attack were both shot and killed by police

county employees with hold a moment of silence at 10-58 - that's when the first 9-1-1 call was made.a brief memorial service will also be held later today. since last month's election - there have been calls for a recount to the presidential race.green party candidate jill stein raised funds to have multiple states recount those ballots.cbs 2 news reporter stephanie johnson is at the breaking news desk with details. stephanie?yes dora-- several states are recounting votes and today pennsylvania is recounting votes. voter recount is happening wisconsin--pennsylvania and michiganseveral counties in wisconsin have decided to count by hand while others will use a machine. without evidence jill stein--argues that irregularities in votes could have been tampered with-- stein is trying accomplish before the federal deadline to certify on december 13th--that means states must make a final decision on any controvery before congress make a decision. stein says americans need

that's the problem herea&there's been a large period of time where we've had multiple administrations choosing to allow these sanctuary cities to get away with it, for political reasons."-but will they really risk losing federal funds? for new york alone that could mean more than 10 billion dollars according to multiple news groups.-(center for immigration studies-550) "i think there'll be a lot of political pressure for these cities to look tough against a trump administration" (butt to) "but ultimately these are politicians who understand that federal funding is critical to their exte trump's hands though may be somewhat tieda&past supreme court rulings including one that came out of the obamacare fight, limit what the federal government can impose on states and cities. -(scott/tag) if the white house doesn't get its way, it may have found an ally in republican governors, like greg abbott of texasa&who this week vowed to sign a law banning sanctuary cities there and cut state funding, to those cities.in washington, i'm scott thuman.

learning are trying to protect undocumented students in the u-s.one of those schools is drake university in des moines. their president marty martin sent an email to campus - saying the university is committed to protecting immigrants from unfair deportation.he's also one of 400 college presidents urging leaders to keep the daca - or the deferred action for childhood arivals program. "schools are a special place. a place that they won't go for enforcement activity. one of the things we want to do is make sure that continues to be the legal clinic will host a panel next week and also plans to bring additional counseling for its immigrant community. some eastern iowa schools have signed a pledge of solidarity with undocumented students.one of those is mounty mercy university in cedar rapids. other schools in the region include loras college in dubuque -- saint ambrose in davenport -- de paul in chicago -- and saint thomas in the twin cities. the university of iowa is getting high praise for its website.it's been named first

with disabilities.the website topped at list of 140-american universities at a presentation at a school in illinois.the number one ranking is quite an improvement.in 2009 - a previous assessment showed university of iowa nearly last. developing this morning - hundreds of employees at transamerica are losing their jobs.the company tells us it plans to cut 120-jobs from it's workforce in cedar rapids - and 800-jobs will be eliminated nationwide.as we first reported in august - sell its edgewood road campus and move 13-hundred employees to its financial park on c- street southwest. it's and right now in it's degrees.coming up in sports - hilton magic put to the test. could the clones come out on top - in an overtime thriller.in your cbs 2 weather first forecast we

clouds will continue to dominate eastern iowa today

pretty steady in the mid to upper 30s. later on tonight there may be some clearing of the skies and that will allow temperatures to cool down into the mid to upper 20s by morning. on saturday we'll see a few peaks of sunshine but more clouds will build back in ahead of a storm system. late saturday night and into sunday morning, a rain snow mix will develop and move across the area. there inch and a half in parts of eastern iowa. there after, we're watching the potential for a stronger storm system in the midwest.. there is a lot of energy associated with this system and there is still low confidence in the exact track but snow (some heavy) will be possible wednesday to thursday of next week. regardless of if the snow makes it to eastern iowa, very cold air will move in and temperatures will be

here's a look at some of the other things happening on this friday... today -- you can get your christmas presents wrapped and help a good cause at the same time. head to lindale mall during mall hours to get your gifts wrapped by volunteers helping out the arc of east central iowa. they'll be there every day up until christmas eve. after you've got your gifts wrapped -- why not celebrate christmas a little early? marion's christmas in the park will take pce this evening. you'll be able to take part in traditional activities like lighting the peace tree, caroling and horse drawn carriage rides. this year, there will also be a peppermint walk shopping event. it's also important to get the kids reading when they're home from school for long stretches of time like winter and summer break. a new study shows summer reading programs help students who are struggling, keep their skills in tact until they get back to class. researchers say it won't accelerate their reading, though...may be because of the difficulty finding high- skilled teachers for these

if you use social media -- chances are you've seen images like this warning of 24 to 40 inches of snow across iowa next week.that is ?not going to happen -- but those models continue to scare and confuse some people.our own chief meteorologist terry swails says we certainly can receive heavy snow in the corridor, but nothing close to that.he says everyone now has access from all over the world on the internet.often what you see on social media is weeks ahead of a storm and conditions can change fast. that's the latest from the breaking news desk. i'll continue to monitor this situation---dora back to you the airline in charge of the charter plane that crashed in colombia has had it's permit to operate indefinitely suspended.71 people died in the crash -- including several members of a brazilian soccer team heading to a championship soccer match. just before the flight went down -- a crew member on board told air traffic controllers that the plane was in electric failure and ran out of fuel. on his victory tour last ni made a big announcement filling us in on his latest cabinet selection."we are going to appoint "mad dog" mattis (crowd erupts) as our secretary of defense."james mattis is a retired marine general and decorated war veteran - and is a known critic of the current adiminstrations policy on iran. he retired in 20-13 after serving as the commander of

narrowed his choice for a supreme court nominee down to roughly three or four candidates.justice antonin scalia died in february... since then -- there's only been eight supreme court justices.congress refused to hold hearings on barack obama's nominee merrick garland.trump says he'll announce his pick very soon. on the state level, the iowa ?democratic party is now urging members to unify in the face of a republican- controlled legislature. i think one thing that we need to do is specifically start engaging in party building activities in rural iowa and supporting people that are out there in rural iowa who are interested in strong public schools who are interested in quality drinking water."democrats say they're fearful for people of all diversities and the future of healthcare.right now -- at least seven democrats are running for chair of the state party. the obama administration is now challenging a federal judges decision to block a new rule that would have opened about four million

everyone making up to 47- thousand dollars a year - to be eligible for overtime pay. in late november -- a federal judge granted a temporary injunction blocking the change as part of several lawsuits.the increase would raise the number of iowa workers getting overtime by 44- thousand.however -- because the hold came so late, many employers have already made changes to their payrolls. "although many employers probably felt a sense of relief that it was blocked those that had already made some o if they had already increased some of their employees salaries to kind of avert having to pay overtime then it's difficult to reverse what they had already put in place."the fate of the increase still depends on how that judge rules in those lawsuits.but,the future is especially uncertain since the incoming trump administration has already threatened to scrap the plan. a growing number of americans continue to sign up for the affordable care act -- despite the uncertainty of its future.donald trump vowed to repeal the law during his

two million consumers have selected plans since open enrollment began last month.a new poll shows only one in four americans actually want trump to entirely repeal the health care law. the current administration now says it supports requiring women to register for the military draft.right now -- women can volunteer to serve -- but aren't forced to sign up for the draft .all adult men must register when they turn 18.it would ultimately take an act of congress to add women to the selective service. for the final time -- president obama and his family officially lit the national christmas tree last night.the tree is located just south of the white house.the celebration included a concert with kelly clarkson, marc anthony and garth brooks.the lighting of the tree has been a washington tradition for more than 90 years! a corridor christmas tradition has been renewed in mount vernon.last night was the 26-th annual magical night.cbs 2 news reporter matt lange shows us how one resident and a new committee are doing their part to make sure these nights keep getting more magical.

"it's a joy to walk down the street each and every day and this time of year especially." one reason for that, is the handiwork of tim kelley, a former walt disney imagineer who's ideas are in windows all over main street "it's called the cat in the christmas tree." "this is the precarious pig." "santas hen house.""this is just rides back and forth." kelley and group of citizens have constructed eight animatronics over the years to add to the towns holiday lore. tim kelley - former imagineer for walt disney - "a group of middle schoolers that i got together with, this is their concept."every display has its own unique story. "it started with finding a goofy looking chicken in a store so i bought the chicken and then i tried to decide what would be fun to do with a stuffed chicken. and

next week -- commemorates 75 years since the pearl harbor attacks...and one of the oldest known survivors will return to hawaii this weekend.danielle nottingham explains how at 104 years old, this could be his last trip back. as the first bombs fell on the uss arizona in pearl harbor, then seaman first class ray chavez had just finished a shift sweeping for mines. he rushed over to help.(ray chavez, pearl harbor survivor)

smoking black smoke because the japanese had torpedoed and bombed"more than 2400 americans died that day. at 104 years old, chavez is known as the oldest living survivor of the attack. the veteran didn't talk about what he witnessed until 50 years later. here's a look at some of the other things happening on this friday, one of iowa's largest pension funds could face a major shortfall. the press-citizen reports ipers, the public employees fund has a long term unfunded liability of more than five-billion dollars. that means, while the pension fund is operating normally now -- they're short that five- million plus long term. state officials say they won't be need at least 10 to 15 years. still -- some iowa lawmakers have been trying to push ipers away from the traditional pension system.lawmakers say that system would be less risky for taxpayers but if employees don't save, they wouldn't be promised a pension. altoona police chief jody matherly has now been recommended to be the police chief in iowa city.the press- citizen reports that the city council will now vote on whether or not to hire him at next tuesday's council meeting. matherly has served as altoona's police chief since
