>> alan: good evening everyone. we start with developing news in solano county, where two fires burned within a mile and a half of each other and were put out a moment ago. this is an area between dixon and vacaville. a structure burned and sheriffs deputies evacuated some homes nearby. the second fire burned near a pg&e sub substation. >> in other news, a concord park gripped by near of hidden hype bombs opened today for soccer games. the park was shut down after three pipe bombs were discovered earlier this week. we're at the park in concord. seems like parents are still on edge today. >> reporter: but at least we have hundreds of 12 to

14-year-old soccer players here on the field today for the this diablo summer classic. a little apprehension, but at least they're here, despite the bomb threats. this wasn't a normal game day. parents and players had their guard up. >> kind of just look around, 360-degree awareness. mostly i have a nine-year-old kid that is running around here. so i keep him close by. generally i let him wander off but not here. >> walking kind of, yes. >> looking for anything suspicious? >> yeah. >> after all, on friday afternoon, new hal community park was completely shut down as 25 officers, along with the walnut creek bomb squad, and five explosive sniffing dogs, combed all of the acreage for more pipe bombs. one was found friday by a jogger on this trail on turtle creek road. >> the opinion we got from the

experts at the police department were they were constructed in a manner that was consistent with a pipe bomb, and to determine whether or not they were an actual pipe bomb, the substances are taken to a lab. >> the bombs detonated and the crater has been filled in. extra patrols inspected the park saturday morning and the games were on. >> lots of security here, police visible around. they told us not to pick up anything. >> there was an unattended backpack, and the police determined it was some homeless person's belongings. >> parents called the planting of pipe bombs in this park a cowardly act. >> we don't have any suspects and no arrests have been made. >> reporter: so the soccer tournament continues tomorrow. police remind everyone, if they find something suspicious, something out of the ordinary, not to pick it up, not to touch

it, but to notify police. in concord, leslie brinkly, abc-7 news. >> alan: in san francisco, police want to find out of a couple of atm thefts are related. at 3:30 this morning, thieves driving a white man emptied cash from the at the union 76 station in the sunset district. it looks like they wrapped a chain around the atm, hooked the other end to the van's bumper and pulled the front off the machine. a similar theft took place at the atm on market street this morning. police aren't sure how much money was stolen. >> oscar grant's mother sat down for her first one-on-one interview since the verdict of mehserle. the former b.a.r.t. officer who shot her son to death. she spoke with callers during the gospel experience show. >> i think it's a healing process for me as well as those

vallejo police will be sending out half as many patrol cars, and officers will be doubling up in the cars. the department says it will cut down on backup response time. potential budget cuts and layoffs of the police force has it down to 59 -- 95 officers. california's lieutenant governor is in trouble with the tax collector. the santa barbara county farming business owns the federal government more than $100,000 in taxes. the "los angeles times" reports the irs filed a lean against the property just two weeks before maldonado was sworn in as the second highest ranking public official in california. a spokesman for maldonado say the taxes has to do with a dispute over use of company vehicles. >> a massive search is underway

in afghanistan for two missing u.s. navy service members. nato says they drove away from their compound yesterday and never returned. an afghan official says they may have been culled -- killed or captured. july is the deadliest month of the war in afghanistan for americans. >> veterans from the iraq and afghanistan wars were honored today. an iraqi veteran got to throw out the first pitch. >> oakland a's are my favorite team, and to throw out the first pitch, means a lot to me. especially -- i hope i don't mess it up. >> alan: and not a bad pitch. a little inside. he says it's great to see people support the soldiers who have returned home and those still

fighting. the federal government is now giving the okay to patients in certain v.a. hospitals to use medical marijuana. the department of veteran affairs says the treatment will be allowed in v.a. hospitals and clinics in states where medical marijuana is legal. that includes california. veterans grounds complain that patients could be denied benefits and treatment if they were caught using medical marijuana. but v.a. doctors still cannot prescribe it because the drug is illegal under federal law. next, why a south bay lake is off limits to swimming this weekend. plus, what started a deadly stampede at a famous german music festival. and why the struggle to seal the b.p. oil well has become a cat and mouse game. >> leigh: a pleasant day across the bay area today. some cooling is expected in the next few days. the forecast is coming up.

acknowledge acknowledge 18 >> alan: 18 people were killed and 30 more hurt in a stampede at the love parade festival. the police tried to block thousands of people from entering the parade grounds. the festival continued in order to prevent another stampede. tropical storm bonny fizzled out and efforts to plug the b.p. oil leak are back on track. engineers are hoping they can permanently seal the well before the next big storm hits.

>> reporter: a flotilla of vessels, one of the largest collections of ships since d-day, has returned to the gulf coast to resume clearing the oil spill. for the past few days workers boarded up buildings and locked up equipment as they prepared for the first major storm of the hurricane season. even booms were coiled up. the only thing left in place were an coars that were to heavy to float away. officials say cleanup may have to be halted from time to time because of the weather. >> we're going to be playing cat and mouse during the hurricane season. >> the stormy weather has delayed work on the relief well, which will be filled with mud and cement to permanently kill the leak. the cap used to plug the wellhead appears to have remained intact, and officials believe it should stay that way. back on land, some gulf coast residents are raising concerns about the slow and complicated
