running from the area. it's two and a half miles from six flaggs discovery kingdom on american canyon road, a section of the road was closed while officers continue their investigation. san jose's firefighters union said it will make a major announcement regarding the fate of the 49 recently laid-off firefighters. the city started cutting staff this week to help balance its record $118 million deficit. san jose leaders say the layoffs became necessary after the firefighters union rejected a 10% cut to pay and benefits. a press release issued two hours ago, the union says it has new proposal for pay and benefit concessions. the union says it's a final attempt to avoid drastic fire and medical service reductions. >> firefighters in southern california are closer now to containing a major wildfire that has burned for several days. fire crews are fighting the fire on the ground and from the air.

in the desert community of palmdale north of los angeles. the 14,000-acre crown fire is 62% contained. it destroyed one house and three mobile homes. the fire has charred more than 13,000 acres of brush over a 22 square mile area, and some homeowners have joined firefighters to put out the flames near their property. >> we just want to make sure everything is okay. firefighters did a good job. took off -- we got spoot fires -- spot fires. >> always a layer of ash on top. and then you hit it with a hose and it's smoldering and steaming. >> an evacuation order has been lifted, but hundreds of residents remain on alert. in the bay area, a two-acre brush fire disrupted east bay traffic for much of the afternoon today. the fire broke out shortly after noon along interstate 50 near

hayward. >> we quickly started going up the left and right flanks of the fire, starting to pinch the fire awesome we -- pinch the fire off. we have a wide defensible space. >> emergency vehicles forced one westbound lane of 58 a to close to mop up the scene. the situation returned to normal after just a couple of hours. >> a fundraiser was held for the 80 oakland police officers who recently lost their jobs. volunteers at this church in berkeley, and the treasure box are donating these special frozen dinner boxes to each of the laid-off officers. the food is intended to feed the officers' families for an entire week. the oakland officers were laid off this month as a way to help the city balance its $30 million budget deficit.

>> budget cuts are also taking a toll on police k9 units in the bay area. vallejo police department pulled three of its four k9 ewans off -- units off the streets. a nonprofit entity is holding a fundraiser this weekend. >> we have self-service pet washes in our stores and this weekend, all the purchases of the tokens -- because it's a token-operated pet wash -- the money will be donated to the police k9 fund. >> the money will go to buy bulletproof vests, oxygen masks and other safety equipment for the police dogs. organizers are hoping to raise $100,000. more than a dozen bay area police departments have applied for those funds. life on the gulf of mexico is slowly going back to normal,

but the plan to shut off the broken well permanently has suffered a mine you're -- minor setback. here's a report. >> reporter: debris from tropical storm bonnie was found at the bottom of the relief well that will be used to plug the damaged b.p. well in the gulf of mexico. removing the debris will take 24 to 36 hours. so the big push to end the leak for good the static kill, will probably not begin until tuesday. >> we won't -- in the name of the father and the son -- >> the 63rd annual blessing of the fleet took place in louisiana, and there are signs of a return to normalcy. fish riz from florida to louisiana, which had been closed due to the spill, are starting to re-open, getting a clean bill of health from federal and state officials. so far, tests on seafood have shown no sign of oil. >> i'm not picking up anything.

300,000 new users every day. the company said it had 105 million users as of april. that's a lot of tweets. about 200 volunteers helped to install solar electric systems for nine low-income families in west oakland. the fifth annual solar-a-thon event hosted by grid alternatives. they said the solar electric systems will provide $180,000 worth of energy for the families, and while also eliminating 700 tons of greenhouse gas emissions. grid alternatives announced a $130,000 grant from peg -- pg&e for 30 more systems and job-training opportunities. a lot of sun to go around unless you were at the beach. >> leigh: you're exactly right. we had a record today. we're looking live now from the high definition south beach cam. a nice clear sky there.

but, boy corrine na is right the coast is where the fog has been sitting. july is one of the coolest months on record in the bay area and we enter august hopefully with warmer temperatures. it's 85 in ant county, 77 in livermore. the fog is starting to move through the can go can -- golden gate. and a record low at the oakland museum. tied the old record set in 1999 got down to 53-degrees there this morning. here's a look at the next several days. coastal clouds overnight. a mild day tomorrow inland. we will still keep it cool with the coastal clouds at the beaches, and the forecast models are suggesting that august the ladder part of the first we can of august, we will warm up.

nice northerly wind helped to clear out some of the coast. not so at the ocean beach. down towards monterrey bay. the low clouds and fog stacking up near the coast will move inland. so look for overnight temperatures. 59 for ant county, -- ant county, this is the setup for the last four or five weeks, trough of low pressure is positioned to the north of us. its remains in that position, so we look for the low clouds and fog to persist but we will warm up slightly inland. as we head into thursday friday saturday, this trough is expected to kick out. high pressure will kick in and will start what we hope is a warming trend. low clouds and fog in the inland valley areas and then burns back to just the cost by tomorrow
