visit us online. good evening. dozens of firefighters laid off in the south bay this weekend are hoping they can get their jobs back. >> the union is proposing a last ditch plan to save some of those positions but is it too little too late. cecilia vega is live tonight at one of the stations. >> the station one of the ones that was closed today. the sign was hung in the neighborhood to warn neighbors about the closures. city officials say they need time to review the proposal but if the comments this afternoon were any indication this could very well be dead on arrival. >> there have been goodbyes all week long. san jose firefighters turned in their gear for the last time.

>> friday was my last day. >> i turned my gear in today. >> just as the final round of layoffs became official, they announced a last ditch effort to save the jobs of the 49 now unemployed firefighters. the union proposed more than 5% pay cut and reduced benefits for new hires, there would be no guarantee against future layoffs and the union would agree to staffing firehouses that could save on overtime costs. >> we think this has real solutions, it goes into areas of structural reform and deployment models. >> in the city of $18 million in the red the plan may not go far enough for city hall. $10 million in fire cuts is the city's goal. officials at the bargaining table says the new proposal, ninth so far from firefighters is $6 million short. fire union says the plan

actually amounts to millions more. >> there are positive things in it, in terms of the amount of benefit reductions that firefighters are going offer, it appears to the same as their prior offers. >> it rips my heart out. i can't tell you the pain i feel personally. it's not right and it's not fair. the city needs to find a way. >> but stations like this one remain closed and 49 firefighters are out of work. >> i took this job expecting to 30 years here and now it's six months. >> city officials say realistically in order to rehire the 49 laid off firefighters, the union would have to offer more cuts that is laid out in the current proposal. all of this is coming as the san jose fire department is set to have a new chief begin his very

first day tomorrow. an alameda county judge is expected to rule on the labor dispute that impacting a.c. transit service. they are trying to get a contract lifted that was imposed by the a.c. transit board. it's designed to safe the agency more than $15 million but workare upset about changes. more than a dozen bus lines were cancelled. >> a suspected drunk driver is accused of hitting a pedestrian and two bicyclists out on the street today. it happened along danville boulevard this morning causing a big commotion what had been a quiet sunday morning. >> we heard a guy yelling out of the street. there is a guy that ran over two bikers and driving a red truck. crazy, knocked over a pole and

what not. he's gone up street here. >> neighbors were able to get the driver out of his car and hold him until police arrived. all the victims are expected to survive their injuries. we have a reporter on the scene and we hope to bring you more information at 6:00. >> three u.c. berkeley graduates accused of espionage should find out this week if they will stand trial or be set free. that is according their lawyer that spoke exclusively to abc news. >> he is promising action against the case against his clients. shane bauer, joshua fattal, sarah shourd, the three friends all graduates from u.c. berkeley have been held for one year. they are accused of espionage. a spokesman for iran's foreign ministry that they should be

charged with illegally entering iran. if that happens it's a relatively minor offense. >> protests took place around the globe this weekend to mark the one-year anniversary of the hikers' detention. this was the scene in san francisco where they say they crossed the border accidentally. mothers of the hikers called for their immediate release outside the iranian mission to the united nations. >> it's very difficult for us all along. this is as close as we can get. >> their place is back in united states. >> over the last 12 months the mothers have been allowed one phone call and one brief visit with their children but their attorney is promising a breakthrough in this case sometime this week. >> house speaker nancy pelosi defended democrats' chances during the fall election.

war. of you americans were killed in afghanistan last month. also today, the netherlands pulled the last of 1900 troops out of the country becoming the first nato station to withdraw from afghanistan. >> we are following developing news in the middle east where they say a huge explosion has leveled the home of a senior hamas commander. 17 people have been taken to the hospital. there are reports that two people are dead. this follows several rocket strikes in israel. rockets launched from gaza. one hit a community center but so far no injuries. >> pakistan, 27,000 people are still believed to be trapped by raging floodwaters following days of monsoon rains there. it's being blamed for more than a thousand death. they are having a difficult time reaching survivors because roads are covered with water. today the obama administration

announced they are providing $10 million in aid to pakistan. >> they hope to have a large wildfire burning north of los angeles surrounded by tomorrow night. so-called crown fire near the desert city of palmdale is now 87% contained. cooler temperatures helped fire crews get the upper hand this weekend. it charred 22 square miles of brush and described four homes but crews pointed out the damage could have been much worse if the homes were not equipped with fire resistant roofs. >> still ahead, chemicals used to break up oil in the gulf of mexico could create a new set of challenges. >> and why the activists are setting off for a weekend adventure in yosemite park. >> i'm meteorologist leigh glaser, we had 50s at the coast and 90s inland.

mexico. it's what is not being seen that has a lot of people worried. now a report from the gulf. >> reporter: for days the oil out here has become harder and harder to find but the chairman of a congressional committee investigating the cleanup charges bp used too much chemical dispersant to break up the oil. he accused national incident commander thad allen permitting of thousands of gallons used daily. in a letter to allen he charged bp carpet bombed the ocean with these chemicals and the coastguard allowed them to do it. >> we need guidelines, there is no disagreement regard wagon we want to do with dispersants. >> i think we worked hard to not use any more than we had to. >> despite the reopening of some fishing grounds, gulf fishermen

are still wary. you are can see the oil but you can't see the dispersants. >> they want to kill the troubled well. >> we got the equipment to perform the static kill. right now the current forecast we'll do that activity on tuesday. >> local leaders are mystified that bp has pulled in booms when they say there is still oil to be found. >> boom has no oil, they are picking it up. they say there is no oil. over here, couple miles from where they are, they leave this oil sitting here. >> back here in california, environmental activists are spending seven days backing across yosemite national park in after effort to restore the hetch-hetchy valley. great great-grandson of john muir is part of this effort. they wanted to restore hetch-hetchy valley before it was dammed in 1923 to provide

earlier this morning, authorities captured one of three fugitives on the run after breaking out of an arizona prison. daniel renwick and two others

cut a hole in the fence in the prison and car-jacked a car. two other fugitives are still on the run tonight. you see them here. they are believed to be traveling with a woman who helped them escape. they charge fees for checking baggage but spirit airlines is taking it to the next level. they begin charging for carry-on bags. it prevents passengers from delaying the boarding process by stuffing bags that can cause delays in the line. they are charging $30 for any too bag to fit under the street and $45 for passengers who wait to get the boarding gate to pay for oversized bags. >> let's get a check, a little bit up and down. >> absolutely. 30 degree temperature range and

90s inland. low clouds and fog are not in san jose but it is up around the coast. monday morning commute should be like. san jose is at 77 degrees. we managed a 90 today in antioch. the sheet there but check out that 57 degrees in half moon bay with the low clouds and fog. 62 in san francisco right now. napa is at 71 and 87 in fairfield and 86 in livermore. here is a look at highlights. not a lot changes the next couple of days. clouds will come in overnight and advance a little further inland than what we saw overnight last night. below temperatures will be with us the next few days and then the models look like they do want to try and warm us up a little bit. you can see the wall of fog along the coast. the little eddy and there is

counterclockwise flow pulls cloudiness away from point reyes today but as the system continues to push on the south, low clouds and fog will advance inland. look from that to spread and overnight temperatures for most of us in the mid to upper 50s. folks, we're going to be stuck in this trough of low pressure. we've been in it throughout the month of july and here is the first day of august and into the first week this will bring a cooler an normal air mass over the bay area. high pressure will nudge in by thursday and friday allowing temperatures to come up. monday morning commute, slow to burn back to the coast. san francisco will probably be playing tag with low clouds and fog throughout the afternoon hours. 50s coastside and cool things down a little bit inland and topping 90s tomorrow and keep 60s and 70s down in the south bay. here is a look at temperatures for you.
