good evening, everyone. an out of control driver is blamed for five separate crashes in danville. >> police say the young man was driving under the influence when he hit a bicyclist, pedestrian, two cars and a light pole and still kept driving. lilian kim is live from railroad avenue in danville, the scene of one of the crashes. lilian? >> carolyn, the suspect is reported to be the younger brother of giants outfielder nate shierholtz. now this light pole needs to be replaced after being hit. this mangled bicycle was the result of a driver blazing through town with apparently no regard for people or property. >> i was sitting, eating breakfast, minding my own

business. >> he works at "the dog" a restaurant on railroad avenue. he saw a truck barreling down the street at 10:00 this morning. >> it ends up hitting someone or something, and all of a sudden i see stuff flying everywhere, some dust and some tire screeching. about 30 seconds later i hear the tires screech again. >> h. >> not only did the driver hit a cyclist, but a pedestrian standing in a bicycle lane. the suspect identified as kanan never stopped to check on his victims. instead continuing to drivey rad -- erratically ultimately crashing. >> someone said to call the police. >> she saw the truck speeding through her neighborhood. in fact, the horrifying drive ended in front of her house that's where two witnessed stopped him from leaving the street. >> he stopped. the man ran up and said get out of the car, what's the

matter with you? you are hurting people. the kids -- the kid is just out of it. >> they say he wreaked of alcohol and blood tests are being conducted to see if he was under the influence of anything else. while the cyclist was taken to the hospital, everyone else is okay. people of danville are breathing a sigh of relief. >> it could have been really bad. we are glad more people weren't hurt. >> he was booked on multiple hit and run and dui chargeses and was driving without a license. in danville, lilian kim, abc7 news. >> thank you, lilian. a fire in north oakland left four people homeless. the fire broke out around 9:30 tonight at a house on 60th and dover streetses. fire officials say it spread through the attic, but everyone got out okay. the red cross is helping the four adults. the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

a last-minute offer to save the jobs of dozens of san jose firefighters won't likely be accepted by the city. the mayor says it needs $10 million in cuts to help with the city's budget crunch. as cecilia vega reports, the union's latest offer falls well short of that. >> laid off firefighters turned in their gear and walked away with little more than these blue t-shirts to show they used to be san jose firefighters. >> this is what we have left. i'm still proud to wear it. i will always be proud to wear it. >> 49 firefighters were laid off, this station closed and three engines and one truck are out of service because the city and firefighters' union could not reach an agreement. firefighters say the consequences could be deadly. >> if there was a fire in that community across the street, where they would have yesterday enjoyed a response time of two to three minutes you will now see seven to

eight minutes in my estimation. >> in a last-ditch effort after the final layoffs were official, they announced a 5% pay cut and reduced benefits for new hires. there would be no guarantee against the future layoffs, and the union would agree to new ways of staffing the fire housesthat could save in overtime costs. the plan may not go far enough for city hall. city officials say they are looking for firefighters to make more than $10 million in cuts. they say this current proposal falls fall short of that. it amounts to just $4 million. firefighters dispute that figure. >> at this point given the uh norma tee of our budget situation, it really comes down to the numbers. >> many of the firefighters who rushed to last weekend's fire that claimed the life of an 8-year-old girl are now out of a job. including brandon einhorn. >> the crews that found the girl, they are no longer working today. the girl that found the body,

she's no longer working today. today was her last day. the first truck that arrived on scene, they are no longer working today. >> in san jose, cecilia vega, abc7 news. an alameda county judge is expected to rule as soon as tomorrow on the ac transit labor dispute. the driver's union wants the judge to lift an imposed contract that went into affect two weeks ago today. since then as many as 20% of the bus drivers have called in sick every day forcing route cancellations and stranding passengers. ac transit says if the judge overturned the imposed contract, they will have no choice but to layoff drivers and possible -- possibly eliminate service. two nursing homes plan to strike tomorrow morning. the five-day strike involves certified nursing assistants at piedmont gardens and grand lake gardenses. they have been trying to get a new contract since february. one of the issueses is sick leave. the strike is scheduled to begin at 5:00 in the morning.

they are also planning a rally at 10:00 a.m. and a new case of the three americans detained in iran for aer yew. the government wants to charge them with espionage. but the attorney says this could actually be a turn of events. >> in an exclusive interview, their attorney said, we will get news this week they will either be released or put on trial. they have been in limbo in the notorious prison. accused of espionage, but never formally tried. today a spokesman for the foreign ministry says they should be charged with illegally entering iran. he says iran has broken the law by holding them more than a year. if they are put on trial for crossing the border illegally, it is a relatively minor offense. this week the hikers' families pleaded for their released and protested outside the mission

>> david curly, abc news. back home, three teenagers were injured after a shooting in north richmond this afternoon. police say multiple shots were fired and a 14-year-old girl along with two boys, one 14 and the other 16 years old were hit on market avenue near third street. it happened a little after 4:30 and police say none of the injuries are life-threatening. no word tonight on a motive or suspects. many airlines charge a fee for checked baggage, but spirit airlines is now taking it to the next level. it began charging passengers today for carry ons. spirit is defending its decision saying it prevents passengers from delaying the boarding process by trying to stuff huge carry on bags in the overhead compartment. they are charging $30 for any bag big enough to fit in front of you and $45 who wait until they get to the boarding gate to pay for the oversized carry on bags. there is a new breed of storm chaser out there called lightning chasers.

summertime is hunting season for these scientists who are making new discoveries about what is behind each bolt. >> we have seen lightning captured on home video. striking so fast that until now, scientists have known remarkably little about how lightning actually works. but new technology is allowing them to capture thousands of images every second. >> this is a high speed camera, and this allowses me to film 2,000 images per second. >> and watch what they can do slowing one lightning strike down. discovering one bolt is several distinct flashes. and when a radio tower is involved it can shoot upward and not the other way around. airplanes can trigger lightning strikes. this shows lightning from above and below. look at the real thing. this one caught on tape. and then there is that age old question, how much time do you have to take cover?

the old rule, counting the seconds between the thunder and the lightning scientists say it actually works. >> if you can hear loud thunder or if you can count the time between the thunder and lightning and it is less than 30 seconds or so, the lightning is closer than five miles or so. it is time to take cover. >> that's david muir reporting. > we saw lightning in the tahoe area last weekend, but not this weekend. >> yeah, it is usually the dry lightning that causes the fire concerns. we are really mindful of that. as we take a live shot from our east bay cam, you can definitely see the fog is back. we even have reportses of mist and drizzle in san francisco, the golden gate bridge. early morning commuters may definitely need the windshield wipers as you head on out. right now though it is 71 in antioch. they are reporting some clear skies. clear in livermore and 65. overcast already right now. 52 at santa rosa.

napa reporting overcast at 55. 55 and fog in san francisco and 59 in mountain view. the low clouds and fog will be with us tonight. we will even throw in some drizzle and below normal temperatures will be with us for the next few days. folks, it really looks like change will be with us through this week next weekend. there is a sign we may warm up a little bit. you can see the overnight temperatures are mid to low 50s near the bay as well as the coast. and we will look for upper 50s to right near 60 degrees in the warmest locations tonight out toward n antioch, and out toward the livermore valley area. low clouds and fog will definitely greet you tomorrow morning, and this weather pattern is very stubborn and thanks to a trough of low pressure that will not kick out of here. low pressure to the north and west will sit here. the counter clockwise spin will continue to bring the low clouds and fog inland and definitely continue with the cooler air mass moving across the bay area. tomorrow morning's commute, the low clouds and fog are
