>> alan: a destructive house fire in san francisco's mission disict has left dozens homeless and witnesses say it was deliberately set. that's it what it looked like at 6:15 tonight, minutes after the call to firefighters. leslie brinkley is at 16th and valencia. there are hot spots? >> reporter: lots of activity still going on here hours after the fire, on the al alleyway behind me, they're working on hot spots.

43 people displace from their homes and apartments. red cross offering assistance. we're told the fire may have been deliberately set. it started in this house. more than ten engines responded as crews swarmed this house and store fronts to keep the blaze from spreading. >> pg&e has shut down the gas and we had live wires, and making sure they got the wires turned off. >> reporter: the fire perillized business and restaurant traffic on a busy saturday night, and onlookers lined the block and rooftop. >> i saw the bed on fire and called the fire department. >> reporter: chad are cher lives in the basement of the house where the fire started. he said the mattress was on fire and all the burners 0en a gas stove were turned on.

>> it went up quick. >> reporter: you saw a bed on fire. and your suspicion is what? >> somebody set the fire on purpose. >> reporter: he claims a tenant was evicted yesterday. others were panicked. >> the neighbors who lived downstairs called me at the cafe and told me my house is on fire. he got my dog out. i have tons of stuff in there amplifies, computers. >> reporter: within an hour firefighters had it are under control but there were injuries. >> two firefighters hurt, when bus of exhaustion, and the second because of laceration, minor injuries and both okay. >> reporter: i just speak to a woman who was displaced. she is heading off to a hotel for the night. her dock has to go to the city shelter, and the fire crews expect to be here all night and well into sunday before they take care of all those hot spots. reporting live from the mission

district leslie brink lee. >> alan: if you sent a letter to heels burg there's good chance it was destroyed in a fire today. nearly 2,000 post office boxes are kept in the downtown post office, and the whole building was gutted. hundreds of onlookers watched as the post office went up in flames just one block away from the town square. it started around 5:30 and burned for morning an hour. stoked bay stiff wind out of the southeast. firefighters from as far away as cloverdale and santa rosa rushed to stop the flames. the roof caved in, and it's likely much of the mail inside was daned or destroyed. >> there's about 1,766p.o. boxes in the downtown office and all but about 10 of them are rented. so it's a pretty big blow. >> reporter: the postal sis

spokesman says the post office was not a sorting center. it's only a p.o. box office and drop offster. but it's also a community meeting place for the ten of 10,000. the last postal pickup was at 3:30 this afternoon. as for the mail that was send to the p.o. boxes. >> if it's coming from san francisco, it would have been in the p.o. boxes today. >> alan: destroyed or damaged mail will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. a temporary post office will be set up on monday at fox creek, and investigators are trying to figure out what caused the fire. demolition of the old transbay terminal in san francisco is ahead of schedule tonight. work started on howard street and the ramps leading to it an overpass that was part of the original bay bridge construction came down.

howard street will remain closed until 5:00 a.m. monday. the cleaning up howard street and putting the overhead muni wired back up in time for the monday morning commute. the main southbound connector ramp between highway 101 and highway 1 is closed to traffic until 11:00 arm tomorrow morning. the 13-hour closure will allow the offramp to be shifted north as part of the doyle drive reconstruction work. drivers will be detoured. motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible, or expect delays tomorrow morning. that will not be good news for north bay music loves. trying to get to the concert in golden gate park. thousands of people gathered for day one of the outside lands music festival, but because of limited parking, publication transportation -- public

transportation was must. >> reporter: these happy people are 0 fraction of the 100,000 concert-goers expected for the outside lands concert in can golden gate park. they came from all over the country. unfortunately many bay area residents decided to drive here. traffic slowed to a crawl here. many of these are ticketholders trying to find parking in an area with few available spaces. >> we have had people asking us if they can park up and down our driveway all day long. unfortunately, you will get towed if your park your car in somebody0s driveway resident resident residents would have been here before tell us the crowds have so far been manageable. >> not as noisy, not at many people driving up and down the streets. this is tee there are three times the amount of traffic we get. >> this man says it helped his garage sale.

>> everything has been calm, traffic has been good. no problems here. >> reporter: many apparently got the message that parking would be tough. one tax see after another dropped off people and muni buses were filled to overflowing. >> there's going to be more people on the buses more buses. >> reporter: muni increased its service by rescheduling drivers to coincide with the crowds especially after the concert lets out. >> we will have to have extra service after the concert. >> reporter: she says last year the service was too slow. >> after the concert everybody was really stuck waiting for public transportation. >> reporter: what happened? >> you have all the concert-goers hanging out inside your hallway drinking beer and it's a nuisance, actually. >> reporter: in san francisco, abc-7 news. >> alan: the city of richmond took the plunge today.

opponent, jerry brown who has spent less than $800,000 so far. brown didn't have to spend much money during the primary campaign because he didn't face a serious challenger. he does have $23 million in the bank but is holding on it to until closer to election time. an apple manager is under arrest after being accused of accepting more than $1 million in kickbacks from asian suppliers. he was accused of using his position to obtain confidential information from the company, then selling it to suppliers which helped apple negotiate more favorable contracts. apple spokesman issued a statement saying, apple is committed to the highest ethical standards? the way we do business, and we have zero toll -- tolerance for dishonest behavior inside and outside the company.

>> alan: flames shot 30 feet into the air a block east of the white house after an underground transformer exploded and caught fire. two hotels were evacuated. no one was hurt and neither hotel was damaged. president obama was in panama city florida with his family, trying to encourage people to visit the gulf coast after the oil spill damaged the region. the president promised action for the residents who haven't seen a penny from the compensation fund. >> i want to be clear, any delay by b.p. or those managing the new funds are unacceptable and i will keep pushing to get claims expedite it. >> alan: the gulf coast is trying to recover from a tourism slump. the white house released this picture of the president swimming with his daughter.

there's been strong reaction to the president's remarks about a proposed mask. the building is a shos distance from grownt zero. for many it's too short. >> president barack obama may be back-pedaling a bit in his support of the islamic community center two blocks from ground zero. >> i was not commenting, and i will not comment on the wisdom of making a decision to put a mosque there i was commenting specifically on the right that people have that dates back to our funding. >> reporter: the president is referring to comments he made friday night at the annual white house dinner observing the holy month of ram ramadan. >> muslims have the right to practice their religious as anyone necessary this country and that includes the right to build a place of worship in a

community center, on private practice. >> shame on you. >> it's a disgrace. >> reporter: opponents disagree. they say it's incentive to build a mosque in the shadow of the place where nearly 300 people perished. >> it's like spraying swaws swastikas on a knewish memorial. >> one supporter hopes the islamic center stands for healing. >> i'm in favor of religious tolerance. i don't believe that the 19 people who flew those planes and the people that supported them, represent islam. >> reporter: this once local issue, now a national debate. abc news, new york. >> alan: we have some breaking news from san francisco's mission district to tell you about. police say three people were shot just before 10:30 near the intersection of mission and 17th street. police have traffic to that intersection shut down while they comb the area for shell

casings. they're looking for the shooter right now. all three victims were rushed to a hospital but no word on their conditions. let's go to leigh glaser. we're going to have a warmup? >> leigh: it won't last long. we have been stuck in this unseasonably cool weather pattern. i may warm up vying he -- warm up slightly the next couple days and then cools back down. you can see the fog moving inland. and here's a look at current temperatures. 61 in antioch, 57 in concord livermore, 56. 68 in oakland. san francisco 56 degrees. the coast right now, still reporting a little mist and drizzle, and we will hang on to that overnight. half moon bay, 55, and 59 in san jose. so clouds overnight. sunshine inland tomorrow, and we will keep it cloudy at the beaches with me mist and drizzle

lingering. here's the warmup on monday and tuesday, and then we cool back downle tonight the fog has started to move inland, overnight temperatures low 50s near the beaches half moon bay, 52, 52 expected low for san francisco. north bay, napa, the fog will develop there, 53 degrees. towards the east bay, antioch and livermore, will see a little bit of this overcast by tomorrow morning. temperatures there mid-to-upper 50s. and once again the setup areas of low pressure developing just off the coast. this is the way it's been all summer long, and these lows will just pass to the north of us and it just thickens up the low clouds and fog and keeps it near the coast. we will scour out somewhat inland tomorrow afternoon. you can see the timing, 6:00, 7:00 8:00, 9:00, 10:00 all burns book to the coast. temperatures there in the 50s. but inland get ready for temperatures in the upper 70s
