17th streets just before 10:30. one was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening chest wounds. the other two were shot in the leg. the shooter was last seen running east on 17th street. police have not released a description. dozens of people are homeless this morning after suspicious fire in the mission neighborhood destroyed a three-story house and damaged a building next-door. this is what it looked like around 6:15 last night just minutes after the fire department was first called. two firefighters have been slightly injured. one witness tells us it was deliberately set and abc 7's leslie brinkley reports investigators are calling it suspicious. >> the fire started in this house on rondell, a small alley off 16th street between ven lensaway and mission. more than ten engines responded as crews swarmed the house and storefronts to keep the blaze from spreading.

>> we've evacuated every building. pg&e shut down the gas to all the buildings. we did have live wires down in the alley about pg&e making sure that the wires were turned off in the back. >> the fire paralyzed business and restaurant traffic along valencia and onlookers lined the block and rooftops. >> i saw a bed on fire and called the fire department. >> chad archer lives in the basement of the house where the fire started. he said he saw a mattress was on fire and all the burners on a gas stove was turned on. >> there's a lot of books in the house so they went up quick. >> what you saw was a bed on fire? >> yeah. totally. >> and your position is what? >> i believe somebody set the fire on purpose. >> he claims a tenant was evicted yesterday. others who live in the house were panicked. >> a neighbor that lives downstairs called me when i was at the cafe and told me my house was on fire. i came home. got my dog out. i got tons of stuff in there, amplifiers, guitars, computers.

>> the fire spread to a second building but within an hour firefighters had it under control but there were injuries. >> we had two firefighters hurt. one had problems, we think it's exhaustion and the second a laceration. min minor injuries and they're both okay. >> 43 people were displaced. red cross is offering assistance. leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. >> this morning crews still on the scene of a fire that gutted the downtown heelsberg post office last night. investigators aren't sure how that started but smoke was first reported coming from the roof around 5:00 in the afternoon. now postal inspectors will be tallying up the damage. >> hundreds of onlookers walked as the heelsberg post office went up in flames one block away from the town square.

it started 5:30 and burned for more than an hour stoked by a stiff wind out of the southeast. firefighters from as far away as cloverdale and santa rosa rushed to stop the flames. the roof caved in and it's likely much of the mail inside was damaged or destroyed. >> there's about 1,766 p. o. boxes in the downtown office and all but ten are rented. a pretty big blow. >> spokesperson james wickfield said the heelsberg post office was not for mail delivered to local residents. it's only a p. o. drop-off center but also a meeting place for a town of about 10,000. as for the mail sent to the p. o. boxes? >> it was coming from san francisco, it would have been in the p. o. boxes in hillsberg. >> allen wong, abc 7 news. >> the postal service plans to set up a temporary facility at the heelsberg postal annex on

fox street circle at grove street tomorrow. and in terms of claims for damaged or destroyed mail, those are going to be dealt with on an individual basis. and san francisco demolition of the old trans bay terminal is ahead of schedule this morning. work started yesterday on howard street and the ramps leading to it. an overpass that was part of the original bay bridge construction came down. howard street will remain closed until 5:00 tomorrow morning. today crews are tearing down the ramp over the temporary terminal site. they're also cleaning up howard street and putting the overhead muni wires back up in time for the monday morning commute. meanwhile the main southbound connector ramp between highway 101 and highway 1 is closed to traffic until 11:00 this morning. it's all part of a 13-hour closure that will allow the off-ramp to be shifted north as part of the doyle drive reconstruction project. drivers are going to face a

complicated detour down to highway 1 on gary boulevard. you might want to avoid that area if possible or expect a bit of a mess and some delays this morning. well, today marks the 40th anniversary of the golden gate ferry system. certainly a lot has changed in all those years, but there is one thing that hasn't. abc 7's transportation reporter heather ishimaru explains. >> the golden gate ferry went into business august 15th, 1970. jim garrison was hired the week before and he's still on deck today 40 years later. >> do you have any idea how many miles you've logged or tripped? >> oh, my goodness. 40 years! up and down backwards and forwards and so on. i don't know! >> it's title is deckhand but he prefers bosen. at age 79 he has no planses to retire. >> i like the organization.

and i have made a lot of friends here. >> the nixons took a ride in 1972, but it's the loyal locals who help keep the ferries alive. the locksberg terminal was born in 1976 and elizabeth and neil first got on board that same year and started bringing their kids soon after. >> we would go into the city a lot. we would go with the cable car, go muni. we could get free muni passes and we'd go around this area. >> all right. >> not free anymore but, you know, that's okay. >> ferry service on the bay dates back to the 1850s. but after the golden gate bridge opened in 1937, ferry ridership dwindled. the service shut down in 1941. for 29 years the bridge was the only direct route between san francisco and marin counties until planners had to address increasing traffic congestion. >> there were a lot of different studies. add a second deck to the bridge, build a second bridge.

who haven't seen a penny from the $20 billion b.p. compensation fund. >> i want to be clear about this. any delay by b.p. or those managing the new funds are unacceptable and i will keep pushing to get these claims expedited. >> as you know, the gulf coast is trying to recover from a major tourist slump because of concerns over all that oil and the tar balls of that washed on to the beaches. the white house released this picture of the president swimming with his daughter sasha but he did not appear in front of the media like he did last year. there has been some strong reaction to the president's remarks about a proposed mosque in new york city. that building is a short distance from ground zero. for many that is too close. abc's lindsay davis has the latest. >> president barack obama may be backpedalling a bit in support of his $100 million islamic

tomorrow. so today still looks cool. emeryville is cloudy but further out into the east bay towards the valley we've got some clearing going on and back home with the cloud cover, it's dense and we're looking at airport delays of 52 minutes on arriving flights at sfo. so temperatures with generous cloud cover fairly uniform in the 50s. we have upper 50s south end of the bay with 58 sunnyvale and also san jose. our highlights this morning calling for the clouds. they'll thin out towards the noon hour and look for some sunshine this afternoon, continued cool, clouds hovering once again by the shoreline keeping it cloudy at our beaches. and then by tomorrow a little ridge of high pressure, small ones, temporarily staying around the bay for about two days and that's going to bring the numbers back up maybe to near 90 from our inland valleys. but today check out the 80s. you have to go far out into sacramento. just about 88 in sacramento.

but widespread 70s north bay and south bay. so once again 60s surrounding the immediate bay. really no changes from what we've seen the past couple days, past couple weeks. and with our area of low pressure beginning to head on in, this should break up that cloud cover for us. maybe by about noontime or a little sooner. and it's behind this system that we're gonna get into a little warming. so with it you can see a shower, even a thunderstorm to the north of us in the valley. and the temperatures not changing too much. but they'll continue to slide on through. as they do, we'll see the temperatures kind of fluctuate day-to-day. 69 sunnyvale with low 70ss most part santa clara and san jose. look for mid-70s los gatos. temperatures here, yeah, running 8 degrees below the average. mid and upper 50s half moon bay bay with upper 60s menlo park and redwood city tapping out at 69 mountain view. highs 77 this time of year.

san francisco about noon clearing with temperatures there in the low 60s. mid-60s south city. with the festival here today don't expect a lot of sunshine. in fact, cloudy skies and the winds should be relatively flat but as you head out towards the bay, that's where you're going to get some breezy conditions. be advised of that. 74 santa rosa and sonoma and 72 san rafael. vallejo just 70 today. checking in later on this afternoon with 67 by the water in hayward. 70 for you in fremont and out over the hills, another pleasant afternoon with temperatures barely making it to around 80 in concord. you were 80 yesterday. and look for 78 in pleasanton with 77 walnut creek. the warmer locations yesterday morgan hill was in the upper -- 83 yesterday. today upper 70s. so a little cooldown for you as that drizzlingers towards about 11:00, 12:00 monterey. so today cool again.

>> welcome back, everyone. california ventnors are closely following a bill in congress that could threaten direct intrastate wine sales and make it especially tough for smaller wineries. wine and beer wholesalers insist

that is not what this bill would do. nanette miranda takes a closer look at the proposed legislation and the opposition to it. >> while california wineries enjoy the summer crowds, many owners are worried about the comprehensive alcohol regulatory effectiveness act, a bill in congress which assures that states retain control of alcohol laws. california's smaller wineries and microbreweries think the proposal opens the door to prohibiting shipments of wine or beer to out of state consumers and forces them to use wholesalers if they want their products sold beyond state boarders. a wholesaler though might not want to represent a business that doesn't make him a lot of money. >> you have these small mom and pop producers across the united states, the artisan wineries like ourselves making fine wines in small batches. and we would be cut out of that. >> being cut out could mean fewer choices for consumers.

for small alcohol producers, they'd lose a big chunk of their business. according to the marketing and research firm wines ands, california accounted for 75% of all wines shipped to consumers the last year. >> the beer wholers social denies its bill is anything more than state rights. in a statement it said the care act is not about direct shipping. it reiterates that the 21st amendment puts alcohol regulation in the hands of state legislatures like sacramento and not federal courthouses. california wineries are suspicious and have been since the highest court said it was okay to directly sell to consumers. 37 states do so. >> since they lost the supreme court ruling about six years ago, i'm sure they're thinking of ways can we get this power back. >> tourists we spoke with want the freedom to order california wines when they get home. >> i will definitely order.

i have several vineyards that we've been to that have had just spectacular wine. in fact, we've had to take pictures and take notes. >> in order to get it we have to have it shipped. so it would be very disappointing. >> both sides are wrapping up their political donations this election season. in napa, nanette miranda, abc 7 news. >> meg whitman has crossed the $100 million mark. the billionaire and former e-bay ceo has rin a $13 million check to her campaign for governor bringing the total contribution from her personal fortune to $104 million. compare that to her democratic opponent, attorney general jerry brown who spent less than $800,000 so far. but keep in mind brown did not have to spend much money during the primary campaign because unlike whitman he had no serious challengers. brown has $23 million in the bank. he is holding on to it until it

gets closer to election time. well, first it was plastic bags. now san francisco city leaders are considering banning plastic water bottles. the idea to kick the bottle is still in the early stages. but as abc 7's lillian kim reports, it appears to be gaining traction at city hall. >> whether it's a music concert at golden gate park or a street festival at north beach, changes could be coming. if environmental leaders in san francisco get their way, you will no longer be able to buy a bottle of water at a public event on city property. you'll be encouraged to bring one of your own. >> every single one of the athletes got one of these at the beginning of the event. >> the san francisco policy committee and the commission on the environment. she explained how she was able to pull off a plastic bottle-free event last year. instead of being handled bottled water, some 3,000 participants filled their reusable bottles at

several water stations. gordon beliefs the same kind of thing can be done at even bigger events. >> tickets can say bring your own bottles. there can be information online what to expect when you get to the event. >> among the ideas, dispensers with several spigots at large gatherings. those who forget would be provided compostable cups. many say it would be a drastic yet necessary change. >> so many of these plastic bottles end up in the waste stream no matter how many recycling containers you might put out and how many times you ask people to please recycle them, they end up in the trash. >> but as much as people like the idea of helping the environment, many say banning the sale of bottled water at public events is a bit extreme. >> it's too unusual, it's too quickie. it's unnecessary. >> despite some scepticism from the public, members on the commission of the environment are moving forward.

they plan to come up with a proposed ordinance that could ultimately be put before the board of supervisors. lillian kim, abc 7 news. >> in golden gate park, thousands of people will be gathering for the outside lands music festival which continues today. because of limited parking around golden gate park, public transportation has been a must this weekend. here's abc 7's thomas roman. >> these happy people are just a fraction of about 100,000 concertgoers that come from all over the country. unfortunately many bay area residents decided to drive here to the grounds. outsided park in the sunset richmond districts, traffic slowed to a crawl, especially fulton and lincoln way. many are ticket holders trying to find parking in an area with few available spaces. >> we've had people asking to park up and down our driveway. unfortunately you'll get towed if you park your car in

somebody's driveway. it's a problem. >> residents who have been through this before say the crowds have so far been manageable. >> not as noisy. not as many people driving up and down the street. probably three times the amount of traffic we would get on a normal weekend. >> the increase in traffic isn't a problem. in fact, it helped his garage sale. >> everything's been pretty calm. traffic's been pretty good. no problems here. >> many of the attendees apparently got the message that parking was going to be tough. one taxi after another dropped off people and muni buses were full to overflowing. regular riders were warned the concert would affect their travel. >> more people on the buses. >> muni increased its service by rescheduling drivers to coincide with the crowds, especially after the concert let's out. >> we know we're going to have to add extra service after the concert. that's when we're going to do. >> that's good news. she says last year muni service after the concert was much too slow. >> after the concert, everybody was really stuck waiting for public transportation.

>> what happenss? >> what happens is you have all the concertgoers hanging out inside your hallway drinking beer. and it's a nuisance, actually. >> in san francisco, i'm tom malls roman, abc 7 news. >> wow, jackets, boots, things like that going on there today. >> don't wanna surprise anybody. that sunscreen additive may speed skin damage. it's a form of vitamin a. the data comes from the fda's own website. >> the most recent study, the one-year study, shows that rubbing the skin with vitamin a and then exposing it to the sunlight accelerates the development of skin cancer tumors. >> but the fda says this animal research is still in the early stages yet to be peer reviewed and published and should not be extrapolated to humans. >> if we felt there was a danger to the public we would alert them to that fact. >> there's no evidence sunscreens are harmful. >> the study was done just on a single ingredient, not in combination with a sunscreen product. it's an inactive ingredient. it's not a sunscreen ingredient. >> the skin cancer foundation issued a statement labeling the environmental working group's report junk science saying it will raise unnecessary fears and

the cloud cover peels back by about noontime. maybe a little sooner. we do have a mechanism working in our favor to our north that could turn out those clouds, pull them back to the coast, and bring on that sunshine. but it's not going to do anything to warm us up. in fact, temperatures are going to be the same. maybe even a degree cooler around the bay due to this weather system headed to the north of us. lots of 70s into the south bay, the north bay. 80s in the sacramento valley. here's what's going on. this area of low pressure heading to the north of us today. that will bring the strong onshore push. the low clouds and fog and maybe even a thunderstorm in the northern sacramento valley. it's what's behind it that's important. because we have the dry air and the windy conditions inñç the sierra nevada. tuesday we could be talking about fire concerns in the northern and south sierra. we're gonna warm up behind the system. that's monday and tuesday. today though 95 fresno, 88

sacramento. 63 in monterey. the mist and drizzle here for most of the day. late afternoon some sun. warming up in l.a., 82 there today. 73 in campbell. 72 san jose. look for just 69 in sunnyvale and on the peninsula we've got temperatures here in the 50s now. later on today a little bit of heating and you'll climb through the 60s for a high of 69 in palo alto. some airport delays at sfo due to the low clouds. and we'll see them lift midday, 62 downtown. a cloudy day for the festival today but late in the day a pew peeks of sun. 74 novato. look for of 64 berkeley. inland spots highs in the mid-70s for dublin with about 80 in antioch and that sunshine working towards concord this morning. 65 in watsonville. the accu-weather seven-day forecast. low exits today keeping the numbers cool. tomorrow in its place we'll see

more sun, slightly warmer into tuesday, and the numbers begin to trail off wednesday, thursday and friday. so we've got, you know, our september and october that should be warm. we'll start hoping and talking about that in the weeks ahead. >> all right. i'd rather have it cool and gray than really hot and sticky. >> it's a fire danger, sure. >> thank you, lisa. san francisco there's a battle over bocci ball. there's a proposal to build bocci ball courts open to the public, no cost to the city. some people including the mayor think it's a good deal but the plan is getting knocked around. >> some say it's the oldest game known to mankind. these days bocci ball seems to be growing in possible larity. on this patch of green across from san francisco's ferry building where homeless people hang out, two bocci ball courts might be built. local businessmen including one with deep political ties to the mayor are offering what's described as a $200,000 gift to

the city to pay for the courts. >> hopefully this will bring people from their offices or the farmers market or the neighborhood out to come and have fun and play a game. >> the proposed courts are in supervisor david chew's district. >> right now during this worst economic recession since the great depression, it's really helpful to have gifts to the city. and i thought this was appropriate. >> but some are looking that gift horse in the mouth. jamie whitaker says his south of market community group was never consulted and might prefer a playground instead. >> green space is very valuable to us and it should not just be decided upon by the highest bidder what that park space becomes. >> this neighborhood organization walls asked its opinion. they like the idea of a playground but feel it would be shortsighted not to go along with what's actually on the table. >> there's nothing really bad i can think to say about a bocci ball court. seems pretty all american to me or all italian or whatever it

is. >> but another activist came to the city hall adamantly opposed. >> and the whole matter is to get rid of the homeless. that's not gonna cut it. >> and she is saying her neighborhood group was not informed either. the bocci ball courts could be built fairly quickly if it does get through. young people in a job training people run by a local laborers union would do the work. a vote on the project though has been delayed because it's now such a controversy. so many people with so much to say. don't go away. two zebras got loose from an animal training facility. they got spooked by dogs and both ran on the busy street 7:00 last night. one was immediately hit by a car and slightly injured. sheriff deputies and, animal control officers and zoo experts spent about four hours getting them corralled and loaded into animal trailers. well, the south american penguin colony at the san francisco zoo is the largest in captivity, and it just got larger. last week there were three new additions. abc 7's lee glasser was there for the formal introduction. >> with a waddle, waddle and a little strut, three chicks made the penguin march to their new home on the island. it was a thrill. >> just to see the baby chicks just walking on their own. >> normally we want them to sort of stay at a steady clip through the whole march. but they did very well and actually took their time so

everyone got a lot of exposure. (laughter) >> and a little confusion. but after some gentle coaxing, these 12-week old penguins finally dove into their new digs joining 44 others just like them. for the next 24 hours these new little penguin chicks will actually stay in the water swimming around. they're hoping they will make their way on land and join the rest of the colony. worldwide populations are in serious decline. last week they were added to the prosecute endangered species list. >> they're the most populous penguins, three million in the wild right now but they're threatened because of the overfishing and climate change. >> for the next year these youngsters will explore their new surroundings and try to fit in with all the others that look just like them. lee glasser, abc 7 news. >> well, they're cutis all
