hitting a jump at speeds approach 1-g 100 miles an hour. >> people were scrambling and it rolled on top and hit people. >> alan: several people were run over others were pinned under the truck. because the race was held in the desert it took rescue crews a half hour to reach the scene. >> a lot of commotion, people trying to assist the wounded. it was pretty chaotic. >> i saw blood on the floor, and people trying to give cpr, everybody was trying to help. >> alan: an estimated 1,000 people were at the race, but there were no guardrails surrounding the dirt track. some people were standing as close as ten feet away from the speeding trucks. >> they allow to us stand wherever we want. >> alan: the chp and federal officials were on the scene today, investigating exactly how the truck lost control. now fans of offroad racing are

left to question the safety of their sport. >> a sad dow day for offroad races. i've been doing it since the 80s, and this is the worst accident i have heard in offroad racing. >> alan: the chp says the driver was not drinking, and they have no plans to arrest him. but he had to run from the scene after angry fans started throwing rocks at him. also last night a semi-truck racer was killed during a crack at the marysville speedaway in yuba county. it flipped over. no spectators were hurt. the track officials say this is the first fatility in the 68 year history of the speed away and also the first time they ever raced big rigs. in the north bay fire wiped out a community's main post office this weekend. the blaze left healdsburg residents wondering if they're

missing any important mail. >> reporter: it was all over in two hours. the healdsburg post office on center street was gone. the flames taking a part of town history and perhaps thousands of letters by the time the fire was brought under control. >> it's heartbreaking really. just kind of turns my stomach. i'm sad. >> reporter: residents spend sunday morning looking at the gutted building and wondering if their po box went up in flames. if his check was in the mail, it's chance it was burn to a crisp. >> i was expecting some money in the mail that i had coming that could be there or could be coming in next week. i'm not really sure. i have to wait. >> reporter: a big chunk of healdsburg got its mail here. there were more than 1,000 -- 1,000 700 p. p. often boxes.

could be taken to a ranch in oregon. they war spooked by a couple dogs and took off. he does appear to be okay. hundreds of bay area homeowners in oakland today were there in hopes of getting a break on their mortgages. that is day four of a five-day mortgage modification event put on by chase bank. customers melt with counselors, provided documentation, and in two weeks they will find out if they qualify for a loan modification. some homeowners say this has been their only chance to discuss their mortgage problems problems in person with the bank. >> we have heard so much about plans and programs and what's out there. we call and we call and we get a different answer everytime. so we're here today to get some finality to if they can help us or not. >> alan: chase expects to receive 2,000 applications by the end of the event on monday.

let's go to leigh glaser. i'm noticing the fog is burning off sooner. >> leigh: a shift in the wind is scouring the fog and clouds out sooner. we had some sunshine and that translated to warmer temperatures. here's a look from our high definition camera. this time yesterday, shrouded with fogginess but this afternoon, lots of sunshine there managed to warm up five degrees in antioch from this time yesterday. 86. 76 in livermore. 80 in concord. 66 oakland. san seasons, 60. 70 in novato and # 5 right now in los gatos. so will go with coastal encloseds -- clouds overnight and then we will cool down head interesting wednesday and thursday. nice clearing today.

more sunshine. those northerly winds pushing everything just a little off the coast there. temperatures up as much as four or five degrees especially east bay locations. tonight, the fog that's out there, those westerly winds were rotated back in towards the coast and the bay and we will keep drizzle in the coastal forecast as well. half moon bay, 52 and antioch 57. real quickly, going to the sierra. north of lake tahoe, getting reports of isolated thunderstorms, even some lightning strikes. these will be dying down overnight, but the culprit has been an area of low pressure right here. this system just moved to the north of us and this is all responsible for those northerly winds just pushing the low clouds and fog off the coast. tomorrow we get into a little higher pressure right here and that means more sunshine for us. towers few degrees warmer, and tuesday, enjoy it because this next low here, this is going to

move in here by wednesday and thursday and that's going to mean cooler temperatures and increase in the low clouds and fog. so we will be chilly once again by mid-week. tomorrow morning clouds will be with us but they should burn off rapidly. even notice some upper 80s to low 90s inland. we will keep 50s at the coast. so here is a look at your highs for monday. 79, san jose. 82 campbell. half moon bay little sunshine tomorrow, 61 degrees there. mid-70s for the peninsula. palo alto, 76. 63 for san francisco. north bay warm up nicely with 80 for santa rosa. sonoma and novato, 78. oakland, 69 tomorrow. union city, warm to 73. inland locations, kind of where you should be this time of year. antioch, 90. 86 for concord. 85 dublin and 73 tomorrow with
