making news on this friday, august 20th. >> in custody. two of the nation's most-wanted fugitives found, overnight. a three-week-long nationwide manhunt is over. outbreak. people getting sick from tainted eggs. and a baseball legend, facing the biggest fight of his life, after being indicted on charges he lied to congress. and good morning, everyone. thanks for being with us. we begin, now, with breaking news out of arizona, where authorities ended a week's long manhunt overnight, taking an escaped convict and his

accomplice into custody. >> it was the manhunt haed that reported sightings from montana to pennsylvania. >> a news conference in phoenix just a few hours ago. as clayton sandell reports, the pair was armed and ready for a fight. >> the nightmare that started on july 30th is finally over. >> reporter: the fugitives were spotted by a forest ranger in the mountains of eastern arizona, near the new mexico border. far from where their odyssey began on july 30th. that's when caslin welch, allegedly helped her fiancee and two murderers escape from prison. the two made it to new mexico. donnell rennwick was caught in colorado. tracy province was captured in wyoming. but mcclus can i and welch evaded capture. they were lost spotted in montana, leading toian all-out alert in yoel low stone national

work. but authorities thought they would reconnect with family in arizona. when they were caught last night, they were armed. >> she attempted to go for the higher firearm. as she pulled it out, the s.w.a.t. officers had their guns trained on her. and she dropped the weapon. >> reporter: the quick-thinking ranger was suspicious of the campsite and found the license plates on their car were stolen. mccluskey and welch wsh -- a nationwide manhunt, now over. clayton sandell, abc news, denver. as one official said, overnight, citizens can now rest easier. but the job of law enforcement isn't done just yet. they're still trying to tie the two to crimes they may have committed while on the run. the fbi is searching for the caller who threatened an american airlines flight from yorcisco to new york. the threat was determined to be a hoax. but it caused passengers to sit on the tarmac for hours, without

food or any clear idea of what was going on. brad wheelis has the story. >> reporter: concern and anxiety spread through passengers of an american airlines flight bound for new york, when someone called in a threat, just before leaving san francisco's international airport thursday morning. >> first thought was, get me off this plane. i don't want to be here. it's just a weird, sinking feeling. >> reporter: local officials initially called the threat a possible hijacking before federal agents called it a possible bombing. passengers on american airlines flight 24 were only told there was a credible security threat. >> you wonder, especially in this day and age. >> reporter: federal agents deemed the threat not credible. but not before passengers were removed from the plane and taken by buses to a terminal, where they were sent through security again. >> 30 or 40 police officers. they took us off the plane. and wanted us down. make sure we didn't have weapons or anything like that. >> reporter: local law o

say ials say nobody was arrested. one passenger released these photos of what he says police handcuffing a man and woman sitting in the back row. all 163 passengers and 11 crew members onboard were stuck on the plane for about 4 hours. i'm happy to be in the terminal. i don't know if i can ever say that. >> reporter: brad wheelis, abc news. a nuclear iran has reportedly farther away than once thought, at least according to the obama administration. today's "new york times" says officials thought that israe a iran to complete work that may lead to a nuclear weapon. and the administration believes its analysis has now persuaded the israelis to put off any preemptive attack on iranian facilities. pakistan now says more than 20 million people are being affected by the incredible flooding there. the international community is now mounting a growing relief effort. at leastn in aid has now been pledged. of that, more than $150 million is coming from the u.s. 380 million eggs potentially

tainted with salmonella have food safety advocate calling for more from producers. the recall is now grown to ten states. and the legal battle from it all is under way. david wright reports. >> reporter: already, wright county egg is facing lawsuhe ou from the outbreak. the first brought by this woman, from ke noesh sha, wisconsin. who got salmonella from a cob salad she ate at that restaurant, in july. >> cold, hot. fever. you name it. >> reporter: and the number of people getting ill. >> the favor was real bad. lost almost 25 pounds. >> reporter: is rising fast. >> i woke up in the middle of the night really sick to my stomach. horrible stomach pains. >> reporter: the cdc says nearly 2,000 illnesses across the country may be linked to this county break. even after three of its farms were linked to salmonella, wright county eggs continued shipping eggs from its other farms in galt, iowa.

100 million more eggs. thousands of them packaged and shipped, after the initial recall. first, the recall was limited to eggs stamped at the end here with 1026, 1413 or 1946, indicating the plant where's the outbreak started. consumers should also not eat eggs stamped 1720, 1942, 1951, 1686, or 1091. >> why did it take so long before we discovered that there was this widespread contamination problem? >> reporter: industry watchdogs say the government has been slow to act on food safety. and that has put americans at risk. david wright, abc news, los angeles. the end of a police chase has dallas authorities reconsidering security at airports. they want to know how a carjacking suspect was able to drive through a fence and right on to the runway at love field airport. he was eventually surrounded and arrested. all operations at the airport were halted for about ten

there are new concerns about a so-called double-dip recession this morning, after first-time claiming for unemployment benefits spiked last week. jobless claims climbed by 12,000 to 500,000. that's the highest level since november and the third-straight increase. the jump is a sign private employers may shed jobs, this month for the first time this year. that report put investors into sell mode. the dow fell 144 points yesterday. the nasdaq lost almost 37 points. asian markets are following that trend today.

tokyo's nikkei average tumbled 2% today.hang s hong kong's hang seng is lower. in london, the ftse opened slightly higher. more americans are dipping into their retirement accounts to pay their bills. according to a report out this morning from fidelity investments, a record number of people made hardship withdrawals from their 401(k) accounts last quarter. and the number of people borrowing from their accounts reached a ten-year high. federal regulators are ready to propose a record penalty against american airlines for maintenance violations. "the wall street journal" reports that faa officials want to fine the airline $25 million or more for lapses dating back to april 2008. the airline improperly fixed electrical wiring, forcing it to ground 300 planes, leading to widespread flight cancellations. well, using a smartphone as a credit card hasn't quite caught on in the u.s. but that may be about to change. bank of america and visa will begin testing the so-called digital wallet in new york next month. a small chip in the phone allows

california had 200 firefighters on the move. the fire initially threatened about a dozen homes in riverside country last night. calm winds made it easier for firefighters to make headway. and now, for a look at morning road conditions. wet on i-95 from the carolinas to miami. and on i-10, from pensacola to new orleans. flooding on i-35, from des moines to minneapolis, to duluth. and from i-70 kansas city to st. louis. slick highways from west texas to arizona. >> if you are flying today, expect airport delays in minneapolis, kansas city, charlotte, atlanta and new orleans. and new scientific report is challenging the government's assertion that most of the spilled oil in the gulf is gone. the scientists say they may have mapped a 22-mile-long plume, made up of oil droplets so small that they are nearly invisible. and the plume is so deep and in such cold water it is degrading very slowly. scientists say it could eventually threaten deepwater fish.

roger clemens says he is ready for a fight. and he is facing a big one, now that federal prosecutors are calling him a liar. as t.j. winick reports, clemens has been indicted for statements he made about performance-enhancing drugs. >> let me be clear. i've never taken steroids or hgh. >> reporter: it was those very words at a congressional hearing in february of 2008, that has roger clemens, considered by many, as the best right-handed pitcher in the history of baseball, now under indictment for his statements about performance-enhancing dprupgs federal authorities believe that clemens personal trainer, testified that he injected clemens with steroids or human growth hormone on separate occasions. >> when i told senator mitchell that i injected roger clemens with performance-enhancing drugs, i told the truth. >> reporter: clemens tweeted the following. i never took hgh or steroids. and i did not lie to congress. i look forward to challenging

the government's accusations and hope people will keep an open mind until trial. i appreciate all the support i have been getting. >> we have known for some time this was going to happen. and now that they are ready to move forward, we are, too. >> reporter: charges include perjury, which means he could spend up to 21 months in prison. it also likely slams the door on any chance clemens had on getting into the hall of fame. >> wherever he goes for the rest of his life, people are going to say, he's a liar and he's a cheater. unless he comes out and says something other than what he said to this point. >> reporter: clemens is now the second baseball star from the past decade to be indicted for making false statements about performance-enhancing drugs. career home run leader barry bonds is scheduled to go on trial next march. t.j. winick, abc news, new york. singer wyclef jean should find out today if he will be allowed to run for president of haiti. jean met with outgoing haitian president ahead of today's announcement by the electoral

council considering his candidacy. earlier this week, jean went into hiding, saying he had received death threats. women in search of a mental boost may have to look no further than their wine rack. a new study out of norway found that drinking wine in moderation, improves a woman's memory and perception, giving them an intellectual edge over men. moderate is described as four or more glasses of wine over a two-week period. researchers say it may be attributed to antioxidants or alcohol itself, which helps blood circulation. the nation's biggest drugstore chains are offering flu shots earlier than ever this year. rite aid and walgreens are selling them in most of their stores. cvs will begin next week. the early response is a response to last year's swine flu outbreak. eight teams from the u.s. and eight overseas begin the final phase of the little league world series today. now, we get last week's sports highlights from espn news.

and now, a look ahead to the stories we'll be watching on this friday. authorities will decide which state will get custody of two fugitives who were arrested overnight in an arizona campsite. escaped convict john mccluskey and his fiancee, casslyn welch, have been linked to kidnappings in arizona. as well as to two murders in new mexico. residents in tennessee will finally get a break from the rain today. the cleanup from this week's flood. but they will have to work fast. more showers and some thunderstorms are heading their way over the weekend. an announcement is expected today about israeli and palestinian peace talks.
