newsom. >> carly fiorina spent most of her speech ripping into barbara boxer criticizing the support of the president's economic recovery package and her lack of job creation. >> the only job you are fighting for is your own. >> painting boxer as an extremist whose 28 years in washington must come to an independent, fiorina called for a new way of doing business. term limits for congress, 12 years for both the house and senate and more transparency. >> any bill that is brought to the floor of the u.s. senate must be placed online for at least two weeks for public comments before it is voted on. (applause) >> across the street from the convention, a couple dozen protestors reminded people that fiorina laid off tens of thousands of workers during her time at h. p. >> why would anybody want to

consider a failed ceo, could take on this monstrous job of governing this state. >> republican lieutenant governor able maldanado called gavin newsom naughty newsom referring to his affair with the wife of an aide and good friend. the liberal san francisco values, support for banning bottled water at city hall and mandating composting. the mayor's response was posted, with his anti-environment vote being record, it's hardly surprising he's pandering to his party's extreme drill, baby drill race. terry mcsweeney. >> the chairman of the state republican party says criticizing san francisco values always seems to resonate with conservative and moderate voters. san francisco police evacuated three apartment buildings in the north beach neighborhood after finding a hand grenade. someone was cleaning out a

garage yesterday afternoon and spotted the world war ii era grenade. police were called and just to be safe evacuated residents on the 400 block of vallejo. the bomb squad came out, took the grenade away and police let everyone back in. the anthropologists that helped a woman nine years ago. kellie bennett called police with information that led to the arrest of a young man before the attack could be carried out. now the college is helping her. she is suffering from a rare form of cancer that leaves her with double vision and severe headaches. last night a private fund-raiser was held on campus to collect donations for her medical bills. amy hollyfield reports. >> parking lot bombs were supposed to go off in this building. when kellie bennetts asked officials about hosting a party here for kellie, the answer was immediate. >> when i told them approximate

what was happening, they said to me that this is where kellie needs to be. she saved us, we wanna save her. >> kellie was developing pictures in 2001 when she came across some disturbing images of pipe bombs and guns. she decided to call the police. here she is nine years ago talking about that decision. >> no question in my mind the first picture i knew what i was gonna do, i was gonna call the police. >> police went to the home and found the weapons, along with a plan that included setting off bombs in the campus center during lunchtime and shooting at students from the roof as they ran for safety. kellie made the discovery and the phone calling to the police the night before the attack was scheduled to take place. >> atf and fbi had said they thought she saved 250 lives, at least 1400 injuries. >> but now kellie's life is under attack. she has a rare brain tumor at the base of her skull and needs help financing her treatment.

so her friends and family held a fund-raiser for her at the college. >> it's totally amazing and i'm so thankful because they haven't forgotten her. >> they sold 450 tickets. some in the crowd never met kellie but they're grateful for what they did for their campus. >> what could have almost happened. all felt like kind of just missed something. and, you know, always support her and we're thankful for it. >> kellie was not at the fund-raiser. her mother said it's just too overwhelming for her. guzman was sentenced to 80 years in prison. he committed suicide in 2004. in the news room, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> u.s. park police say they know who viciously stabbed a dog several times at a san francisco park. the injured dog, lenny, was released from an animal hospital

yesterday following several hours of surgery. his owner told police she encountered a man walking a pitbull. when she asked him to restrain his dog, she said he pulled out a knife stabbing her american bulldog four times. police say they've now located the man and an arrest is pending further investigation. well, it's happened again. vandals have attacked a rose garden in golden gate park snipping dozens of flowers. this follows the recent destruction of four dozen trees in the park. lisa amin gulezian has more. >> not much you can do. >> to say charles dowling is upset about the recent vandalism at golden gate park rose garden would be an understatement. >> it hurts us. it hurts us more than just the general public. >> someone destroyed three rose beds, roughly 36 bushes, wednesday night. the stems weren't just trimmed, they were scalped. >> how sad. makes me wanna cry.

i just don't understand how they can get any pleasure out of this kind of destruction. >> for most the rose garden brings a sense of calm but seeing this is doing just the opposite. park regulars are coming here to see for themselves what happened. because for many there's a sense of ownership that comes with living in the area. >> my family comes up to visit, we always come here. my mom is a huge rose gardener. >> actually sending it home to my family. it's unconscionable. >> now park officials suspect the same person who did this is also responsible for this, a wave of vandalism in the east end of the park where the focus until now has been on trees. since may 30 to 40 trees have been cut and destroyed. >> the way we've seen the vandalism cuts made, they appear to be similar. they're very clean cuts. so done with either a very sharp utensil or appropriate tools such as loppers or shears.

>> in other words, professional-grade tools were used. parks and rec say gardeners and staffers have been questioned but they have few leads. >> a sick person around. now we can see there's a really sick person around. >> there will be more patrols coming through here day and night. and park officials tell me they are considering installing surveillance cameras. there is also a $2,000 reward being offered. in san francisco, lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. >> redwood city leaders will review that city's red light camera program tomorrow night. a critical grand jury report concludes cameras at major intersections have not significantly reduced traffic accidents in the two years since they were put up. the police chief admits the cameras are revenue generators with the city's take averaging $55,000 a month. but he also believes the cameras are a deterrent since the number of violations has dropped. redwood city's mayor says he was

unaware right turn violators were ticketed by the system until he was caught. that will also be discussed tomorrow night. bay area users of public transit are catching on to the benefits of using the clipper card to pay fares for five transit agencies. the clipper card formerly known as translink is gaining acceptance so fast that the system has at times been overwhelmed. according to today's san francisco chronicle. during the first week of this month, clipper cards were used ford nearly 94,000 transactions, an increase of 11% over the previous week. a 240% increase from a year ago. the metropolitan transit agency says the system has had some agree -- growing pains but they have been solvable. coming up next, iran's president unveils a long-range unmanned bomber one day after technicians began fueling the country's

this just one day after iran began fueling its first nuclear power station under the supervision of russian technicians. israeli leaders called iran's nuclear program totally unacceptable. iran's president said his country would never be the aggressor but should seek the ability to make preemptive strikes against a perceived threat. in pakistan, the united nations said it needs 40 more helicopters to reach tens of thousands still trapped by floodwaters there. the floodwaters are expected to finally begin receding over the next few days. an estimated 6 million people have lost their homes in the disaster. the total economic cost expected to reach into the billions of dollars. the bay area is responding to that disaster. volunteers in milpitas are organizing relief supplies. you see them filling two large cargo containers for the flood victims. this relief drive began when a

just moderate and getting underway tomorrow with 70 at our beaches. mid-90s inland. high definition emeryville camera. 6:31 is the sunrise. looking at clear conditions over in concord. but hayward, partly cloudy skies and fog, half mile visibility in santa rosa. so this morning temperatures have dropped due to a little bit later overcast around novato with 48. you've had some holes in the deck of clouds in menlo park, 48 degrees. kind of felt like fall yesterday. then the cloud clearing felt pretty nice in the afternoon. we're looking at more cloud cover for the early part of the morning but it's not gonna last. 52 napa as well as fremont this morning. so with the low deck of low clouds and fog, we will be looking at a gray start. but then by about 9:00, more sunshine. that's going to leave warmer conditions today, near 100 degrees by the beginning of next week. that includes tomorrow and tuesday.

so big, big warm-up underway. we've got some 80s in the new york today. really conforecasted in the sacramento valley. now beginning to push back, retreat westward into our region. even the north bay and south bay los gatos. the clouds will dissipate with that warmer air evaporating quickly. the south bay, you'll be just shy anywhere from 2 degrees below average to more substantial temperatures below average because you're around the bay with the cooling effects of the water. but still an improvement in san francisco with temperatures 3 degrees below the average. and, in fact, temperatures 5 degrees below the average and oakland should be the mid-70s. tomorrow even warmer than that. an upper level trough of low pressure is traversing the state now. it's bringing cooler air to the central region of the state but for us as it exits today, the flow of shifts, more of an

offshore component. so sea breezes will be weakening today and high pressure building, expanding from the desert southwest that will combine with the high in the pacific to bring us warmer weather. so today look for 66 in monterey with 89 los angeles. sacramento in the mid-80s. comfortable there. back home mid to upper 70. 74 for you in redwood city with our coast warming into the 60s. sunshine in golden gate park today, nice afternoon. 60s downtown. 60 bodega bay, 79 sonoma. east bay couple of 60s for you and a little breezy but definitely feeling a bit more mild in oakland at 69. 80s return for concord and brentwood today. 83 danville, 81 dublin. nice afternoon in our east bay valleys with temperatures here along the monterey coast warming with sunshine, 70 salinas.

♪ welcome back, everyone. a troubling problem for california prison officials. parolees the state cannot track. that's because they're cutting off the gps devices designed to let prison officials keep tabs on them. our capital correspondent nanette miranda is in sacramento with the story. >> the california department of corrections new website already lists the names and face of 45 parolees who have cut their gps anklets off just in the last two

and a half weeks since the listing started. anyone who signed up to get facebook.com, twitter alerts were notified 45 times in that short span. >> we've never disputed the fact they can be cut off. that's part of the benefit of having the gps, if somebody does cut them off we know exactly the location where they're atta point. >> the question is how fast can they be rearrested. many stay at large while those ordered to wear them are mostly sex offenders, the ones abandoning them are largely gang members. they believe they're cutting them off to avoid arrests in recent statewide sweeps. >> if they cut off the bracelet, that's a violation of the parole terms and they go back to prison. >> the chairman of the management board, he's wearing the gps. the strap is made of rubber that household scissors can easy cut through. that's not comforting to a

public that thinks tracking the most dangerous parolees will make them safer. >> once it's cut, there's nothing to stop the guy from simply walking away. that does pose a real problem. i think the public has certain expectations of this technology. the technology itself can't bear out. >> tough on crime supporters think gps monitoring is worth the millions of dollars california spent on the program. state senator george runner led the fight to require gps for sex offenders under jessica's law. >> there's no solution. anything we do is going to have some kind of a challenge to it because these -- we're dealing with i think evil people. >> the corrections department points out that on any given month, dozens of sex offenders and gang members cut off that gps. so this is nothing new. the department hasn't gotten back to me on how many of them are actually found. in sacramento, nanette miranda, abc 7 news. >> there's a new snapshot of the

local economy. every county in the bay area reported a double digit decline in home sales for the month of july. here are the numbers. sales were down 23% from a year ago making it the worst month of july in 15 years. abc 7's karina rusk reports from san jose. qwan wynne is trying to sell hills custom built home in san jose. after just two weeks, he lowered his asking price to $899,000 to lure a buyer. >> if you put for sale, the house for sale, you want to sell it. but kind of frustrating. >> qwan is not alone. the home sale numbers from dataquick are brutal. in july 6,773 homes sold in the nine county bay area region. that's dramatic 19% drop from the month before. >> real estate agents say some of the pullback can be blamed on the federal tax credit expiring but many say the bigger issue, a

lack of money and confidence. >> it's the economy, the job market. hard to feel hopeful when you're not sure you're gonna have a paycheck. >> not even record low mortgage rates hovers near 4% entice buyers. the ceo of the loan source says that may in fact have temporarily stalled activity. >> i think you've just had a drop in rates. when rates drop, people tend to sit on the fence until they think they've stopped dropping. >> what is fairly stable are home prices. the median bay area home sold for $402,000. that's down 2% from june but up 2% from a year ago. as for home sales, there is a lot of interest in what the next couple of months will bring. >> it looks like a lot of buyers are actually back from vacation. and i actually sense a little more activity. tough to see how they translate in actually closed transactions. >> wynne is hoping to see a little more of that foot traffic in the weeks ahead.

i think it's gonna happen this time. i hope. i hope! >> now, as part of the push, there's a new arts market at u.n. plaza every thursday. and starting in september, there's going to be dancing and theater at the mint plaza. well, today there is a sunday streets event in san francisco. it's nicknamed penguin to penguins. don't expect to see any real live penguins out there. that nickname references to the route past the academy of sciences and golden gate park where there are penguins and south on the great highway to the boulevard and the san francisco zoo. you know they've got penguins there. that route was also featured in april but april showers wound up cutting things short. the weather should be good today and the streets will close from 10:00 this morning until 3:00 in the afternoon so people can enjoy hula hooping like those kids or walking, bicycling, doing yoga, whatever they want without having to deal with

fault. and that adds to the prediction that we are also overdue for a big quake on the hayward fault. abc 7's wayne friedman has the story. it's always running, the pen tracing squiggly lines in the seismology lab at u.c. berkeley and if you thought the big one was overdue before, what if we told you now the big one just became two. >> one of the basic geological principles is if it happened in the past, it can happen again. >> dr. peggy is one of the few people in this world that can point out the plain in southern california. we knew in 1857 the san andreas fault ruptured there and ruptured big. today a new report came out showing that it ruptures regularly and repeatedly. >> the average for this study that was just published is 88 years. >> and it's been how long? >> 150 some. >> and when it strikes, that earthquake will hit southern california at as high as 7.9, a

quake much stronger than the last causing widespread damage, mayhem and probably death. >> the rupture wouldn't actually hit los angeles but we would have a whole lot of shaking. >> brings no reason for northern california to feel more secure. the east bay and hayward fault is well overdue. it could go at any time. the san andreas fault in southern california is much the same as the san andreas fault here in the north. >> remember, we had a very large earthquake in 1838 that brought -- that ruptured only a short segment that later was again in 1906. we see hints of that pattern as well. >> to put it more bluntly, that so-called stable ground beneath our feet is really just an illusion in the broader time frame, it has never stopped moving. from the east bay hills, wayne friedman, abc 7 news. >> well, i am wondering, lisa,

(laughter) >> really significant warm-up tomorrow. today just a moderate warm-up. we have clouds out there right now, the low clouds and fog with us from mount tam looking southeast from sutro camera where we do have plenty of fog. but, you know, it's not quite as dense. it's not filtering into concord. we have it down by salinas but we will be looking at changes today. you know, the fog really just recently just formed. so that's why we have some cooler temperatures. it's been clear longer in novato and menlo park. so there it's a cool start, 48. 54 in sunnyvale and 55 concord with no fog in concord and just a little in livermore. looking partly cloudy in hayward. fremont has got some overcast and some fog, half mile visibility in santa rosa. so the coastal clouds with us this morning but moving, retreating to the west quickly today.

we'll look for temperatures to climb. still a little below normal. we'll fix that tomorrow where in fact temperatures climb to the mid and upper 90s. 100 maybe not out of the question. we saw just a couple 80s in the sacramento valley yesterday. had to go far east for that. but now they're trending more westward. they're coming up from the south. and a couple areas of high pressure that will work to warm us up in the days ahead. but more widespread 60s at our beaches today with just a few patches of fog. so for today, look for more mid and upper 60s, san francisco and oakland only about 3 to 5 degrees below the average. by tomorrow we'll be above average in many locales. look for 74 today, redwood city. advertise 81. so still coming in about 7 degrees below the average. san jose at least the upper 70s today and 80s will be in the picture tomorrow as well as santa rosa. so the feature this upper level trough that brought once again the cool air yesterday. now it sits right over the

state. it continues to shift east today and as it does, a ridge of high pressure from the pacific and also down around texas in the four corners region will be merging and that's going to allow for the heat to build tomorrow and it's gonna stay put in southern california all week long. so plenty of heat advisories here. windy conditions still in the sierra with low 70s in the northern sierra. upper 80s in the southern sierra with about 80 los gatos. up to 70s campbell and san jose. peninsula, you'll be in the 70s today. mid-70s. that's a switch. feeling pretty good in redwood city, palo alto and mountain view. less of a sea breeze today. that will really slack off later on today. 79 sonoma, 82 in calistoga. haven't seen that in a while. hercules 73 at about 3:00 with low 70s for newark and out over the hills look for lower 70s danville and pleasanton. beautiful day in pittsburgh and

in this economy, a lot of people are saving money by doing home improvement projects themselves. but that can mean investing in some costly tools. 7 on your side's michael finney says you should make sure they work. this is one of the ways san francisco keeps its plazas clean, powerful pressure washer blasting away oil and dirt. laura brewster of san leandro has the same idea for cleaning moss and dirt off her sidewalk and patio. she bought this husky power washer from home depot which has the same high pressure water. however, here's what happens when she turns it on. >> should come out with force. when you go to the carwash, those pressure guns. >> water starts leaking out the sides. and it isn't blasting out at

2,000 pounds per square inch like it's supposed to. laura shouldn't be able to safely stick her hand in the jet like she's doing here. >> if it was 2,000 psi i wouldn't be able to put my hand in like that. it would hurt pretty bad. >> laura paid $269 for the washer last year. right after she bought it, water rationing was imposed so she couldn't use it until this summer and anyways when she discovered it was leaking. so she went back to home depot. >> i tried to return it. and they said that they couldn't take it back without the receipt. >> laura went online hoping to find a way to get it fixed. instead she found dozens of similar complaints about the same washer. immediately she asked husky for a refund but received no response. >> i contacted "7 on your side." >> and we contacted home depot which owns the husky brand. the store responded right away. and after looking into the case
