>> dan: police think they have their man in the shooting of a fremont police officer. good evening, i'm dan noyes. it was close. after heading south from the bay area, andrew barrientos was want toured moments before he was about to cross the border into mexico. amy hollyfield has more. >> reporter: oakland police asked authorities to close the border when they figured out he was headed that way, and authorities did that. they were searching every car. and a police officer found him just before he got there. andrew barrientos and an accomplice were at a parking lot at the last u.s. exit when a san diego police sargeant spotted their car. >> the suspect was in the

vehicle, identified himself as being the suspect in the shooting of the officer in oakland help was armed. he had a pistol in miss waist waned that was loaded. >> reporter: police all over the state and especially at the border were looking for the known gang member. >> we asked the border patrol and the san diego prognosis -- police department to shot the border down. >> reporter: oakland police and several other agencies gathered information about barrientos' whereabouts after serving several search warrants where he used to live. police arrested a female friend of his during the search. >> as a result of these warrants, one person was arrested for aiding and abetting and harboring a fugitive. >> reporter: they arrested the man who was driving him towards the border. the arrest allowed teams to take a break from the case and check in on fremont officer todd young who is still at the hospital. one oakland officer even brought

in coffee for those who haven't left his bedside. >> we have been working around the clock to find the suspect that did this. now he is in custody so we actually had a first chance to let our hair down and show support for fremont. >> officer young was shot twice yesterday while trying to serve barrientos with a search warrant. he is in critical condition. >> officer young's family is dealing with this. it's been very difficult for him. -- for them. he has young children. his parents and brothers are there. it's been very difficult. >> the chief says the officer's wife has been by his side and she is keeping a positive attitude. he is expected to go into surgery tomorrow, his second tomorrow. live in oakland, amie hollyfield. >> dan: a doctor at the hospital says officer young lost a significant amount of blood and

suffered, quote, rather extreme injuries. it's touch and go. the oakland police department says you can help by donating blood. there are five agencies accepting blood donations. a fast-moving wildfire has forced many people to abandon campgrounds in the sierras. it's burned 850 acres in yuba county. the governor declared a state of emergency in the area. 40 homes are threatened. 900 firefighters are working the rugged terrain, trying to keep the fire from advancing, by clearing brush, shrubs, and setting backfires. >> simple concept. you remove the fuel, cool the fire, with water, or you smother it, remove the oxygen, and what we do here is take the fuel a. from being burned. >> dan: about 40 homes are threatened. the governor's state of emergency clears the way for personnel and equipment from around the state to be deployed to you can cuba yuba county.
