something. this is something i could do for him in his name. >> friends, colleagues and even strangers reach out to help an officer shot in the line of duty. good evening, everyone. the fremont police officer was trying to arrest a man when he was critically wounded on friday. officer todd young underwent a second round of surgery today, and he is expected to have more surgery later this week. the suspect is this man, and he was arrested near san diego, just yards from the border crossing. as officer young fights for his life, his colleagues in the community who he has never met are doing everything they can to support him. >> as the fremont officer underwent a second round of surgery, friend and even strangers were desperate to

help in anyway they could. that's how long lupe had to wait to donate blood. she works with officer young on the crimes task force. >> it can happen anytime, anywhere, on any call, whether it is a regular traffic stop or a search warrant or anything. you just don't know. >> this blood bank in pleasant hill is the only red cross location open on sundays. the outpouring of support here lasted all day. and it came from those who know officer todd young and many who do not. >> i am here because i come from a family where there was the death of a police officer. my brother was killed in 1996, and i just feel like i should pay it back. >> the oakland officer never met officer young, but it brought back memories of the day last year when four of her own were shot and killed in the line of duty. she was on duty on friday when young was shot serving a

search warrant on a reputed gang member and she rushed to the scene. >> it brought back lots of memories. >> after a massive 24-hour manhunt, police arrested andrew barrientos near the border. he had a handgun in his waist band, the same type used to shoot young. >> i worked with him for probably about 15 years. >> the fremont police lieutenant wanted to go to the hospital to be by his friend's side, but he came to the blood bank instead. >> i feel the need to do something. and he can't take visitors and it is something i will do in his name. >> he is the father of three and a veteran bay area police officer. he was shot twice in the pelvic area and is expected to need more surgery over the course of the coming week. the call for donors remains in affect.

cecilia vega, abc7 news. the oakland police department says you can help by donating blood. there are five red cross agencies accepting donations in officer young's name including pleasant hill, oakland, policenton, san jose and fremont. you will find a list on our home page at abc7news.com. it has been a violent weekend in san jose. of the 18 homicides this year, three happened this weekend. two men were shot last night during a shootout in an apartment complex in west san jose, and a 19-year-old woman was shot to death on san antonio court on friday night. and then this morning san jose police officers shot and killed a man holding a knife. we go now to the newsroom for more. >> san jose are beginning their investigation in -- and the south san jose complex was a buzz. it started this morning when a woman called 9-1-1 when she

said her estranged husband was going to kill himself with a nailgun. a boarded up hallway is where officers forced their way into the man's apartment. police say the 42-year-old man inside did not respond at first. the situation lasted about 45 minutes and officers entered the apartment where they say they found the man confrontational and bleeding from the self-inflicted wounds. >> the suspect in the resident with the self-inflicted wound was also armed with a 10-inch knife. he con -- confronted the officers in a very close proximity, and the officers discharged their weapon. >> he says three officers fired a total of about six shots killing the man. they have been placeed on routine administrative leave. anthony ribera who was the head at the institute said it could be difficult for police in so-called crimes of passion where the others have a weapon. >> officers feel horrible when

they have to take somebody's life. even if that individual is hardened criminal who has committed heinous crimes. no officer ever likes something like that to happen. >> san jose police say the three officers did have tasers, but chose not to use them. the police spokesman would not comment directly on today's case, but in general, tasers may not be the best option and factors of how close people are standing to each other may be considered. abc7 news. >> thank you, john. firefighters evacuated two homes in san rafael because of a brushfire. it started around 6:30 on a hillside near margarita drive and highland avenue. about 55 firefighters spent an hour putting out the fire. neither of the evacuated homes were damaged, and no one was hurt. no word yet on what caused the fire. in san jose, firefighters discovered an indoor marijuana

operation after a home caught fire there today. that fire was reported just after dawn along plain view court. investigators believe it was sparked by faulty wiring that would help avoid detection. no one was home at the time. the san jose firefighters discovered it at homes several times this month. it is the fifth anniversary of the day hurricane katrina came a shore. the storm was the most costly in u.s. history. 1600 people died in new orleans and along the gulf coast. new orleans held a colorful tribute for those who helped to rebuild new orleans after katrina and those who lost their lives. they 345r -- they marched in the lower ward that was their neighborhood and that was wiped out. >> i wanted to come here and tell the people of this city directly, my administration is going to stand with you and fight alongside you until the

job is done. >> today new orleans is one of the fastest growing cities in the u.s., but some want the building accelerated. the project should be finished to reinforce the levy system so a disaster like katrina never happens again. tonight hurricane earl is barreling toward the caribbean with winds of 100 miles an hour. it is now a category 2 hurricane. leigh glaser is tracking earl for us tonight. leigh? >> winds are up to 85. in the last couple hours, this thing started to intensity. it is moving over some very warm waters. remember it is the warm waters that helps to feed the hurricanes. it is already up to a category 2 and the winds are 100 miles an hour and moving to the west northwest at about 15 to 16 miles per hour. right now it is actually brushing over the north leeward islands as well as the british islands with hurricane

warnings. it is moving to the west, northwest and it will skirt to the north of puerto rico by tomorrow, and then it will continue to accelerate. right now the forecast models are suggesting it will make a curve back toward the east, and it could possibly impact the carolina coastline as we head into wednesday and thursday. friday of this week we will have to continue to watch this. but definitely a system that could impact the mainland u.s. here locally, the temperatures will start to warm up across the bay area. we will look at our forecast coming up. >> thanks, leigh. new video of 33 trapped miners were seen sending greetings to their family. most were upbeat expressing gratitude for the support they were getting, but when speaking of their wives and children, they broke down. many have skin irritations from the conditions underground. and the men will have to help with their own escape clearing thousands of ton of rock that

threatens to fall on them as the hole is drilled. as america ends combat operations in iraq, there is concern that the iraqi military is not prepared to defend the country from insurgents. but there are pockets of relative peace and security. here is dan harris with a look at how things are changing. >> this would have been impossible the last time i was here three years ago. an american walking freely through a busy market in baghdad. this would have been impossible too. a crowded ice cream shop. new restaurants are opening up as well. some the places where we used to eat in the old days have been bombed. but this fancy new spot just opened their doors. ule -- although they check you for guns before you get in. this place is no means what an american would call normal. there are police and army checkpoint all over, and we have to travel with a lot of security. what is more, there is pervasive security about the withdrawal of those american combat troops.

the emmy awards honored television's biggest stars in los angeles. host jimmy fallon peppered the show with comedic skits including this parity of elton john. the first award went to "mod derp family." they had best supporting actor and writing awards as well. >> we are so grateful. we are so thrilled that families are sitting down together to watch a television show. >> bas drama went to "mad men," the third consecutive win. george clooney accepted the humanitarian award for his help with tsunami and terror attack victims. edie falcon won for best actress. brian cranston received his third nod in "breaking bad."

depth. little is known about the physiology about stereo scop pick vision, enabling the test subjects to see two screens at once with mirrors, and his team established some of the things that lead to bad 3-d. for example, two-d to 3-d, much of what is marketed today is really two-d with artificial depth added by computer. when done too quickly such as "clash of the titans" it can give you a headache. close ups can unsettle the brain, an object that is supposed to be four feet from the viewer is being pro ect jed on to a screen 10 to 40 feet away. here emily cooper's experiment is finding that audiences do not take viewing distances into account. the shuter affect. in a 3-d broadcast, two cameras snap a picture. on the screen they are shown at two different times. first for one eye and then the other. making a fast-moving object appearing to be in the

foreground when it isn't. banks' lab found a solution. it doesn't mean stereo scop pick 3-d is bad are to you -- >> i wish we did more research on. it. >> with the next step in 3-d, richard hart, abc news. a volcano in western indonesia erupted for the first time in 400 years. the eruption has thrown sand and ash a mile into the air. and there has been lava throwing near the crater. 12,000 people have been evacuated as a precaution. indonesian television reports say respiratory complications from the dust and ash killed one person and hospitalized dozens of others. so far there has been no major property damage. we saw pleasant weather here. a little bit of a warm up, leigh. >> yes, a warm up and especially on saturday. very cool. truckee, 37 degrees. >> yikes. >> and they had a few snow flurries. the higher elevations in the

sierra. so the things will improve for us all as we start to get into our workweek. the temperatures will be warming. a really nice shot for you from our high definition sutro cam. we have mainly clear skies. although right near the coast, a little bit of low cloudiness there. it is 55 in san francisco. novato 55. 59 in fairfield. oakland right now, you are at 60 degrees. we have 56 in fremont as well as livermore and 65 right now in antioch. so we'll go with a few passing clouds overnight. a little warmer for our monday, and then we will really start to heat things up as we get into wednesday and thursday with temperatures inland in the midand even upper 90s for you. here is our temperatures for tonight -- still a cool night, especially in the north bay. santa rosa 50. cloverdale 58. we will have a little more milder temperatures with 55 there. concord 54. 53 livermore and san jose, you will be at 55 degrees.

there is a few systems going on, and we have had a series of lows diving down toward the bay area, and we have one more that is set up, and it is going to move right in. most of the moisture from this will stay to the north of the bay area, but it will still keep us a little on the cool side and a little below where we should be this timing of year. -- this time of year. then we will warm things up. you can see the animation at 7:00 tomorrow morning. the moisture right there, strong for this time of year. on the north coast, they may see a little moisture feeding into the area. once that theme passes, high pressure is going to warm is up into the middle part of the workweek. we start off tomorrow morning with an over cast that burns back to the coast. and the temperatures will climb another two, three degrees tomorrow. still very comfortable. mid to low 80s in the east bay and even 60s at the coast. in fact, here is a look at

some selected cities. we will go 77 for campbell and 76 for san jose. milpitas, you will warm to 71. a bit breezy and we will see some sunshine. half moon bay tomorrow 61 degrees. 74 for palo alto. san francisco will warm to 65 degrees. and in the north bay, a few clouds that will be close to where the low will track. 77 for santa rosa and 75 for napa. east bay, oakland warming to 70, fremont 74. interior east bay locations, quite mild. in the mid80s with 84 for brentwood and 83 antioch. 82 for danville and even monterey and santa cruz 68. we will go 83 for gilroy. now remember on tuesday and wednesday, the high will really start to build in. we will get into the offshore winds it looks like. especially on thursday. the temperatures mid to upper 90s inland, upper 80s on
