for one family, the gray family it was a good day. >> neighbors got one last chance to try to find what is left of their belongings buried in the ashes. charlie and carolyn gray had the help of firefighters. >> three of them were searching through, and not in the safe or anything like that but she has her mother's rings and things like that. they found them. and found jewelry and stuff. >> needle in a haystack, and one said, here's the needle in the hay stack. >> reporter: many people lost important documents but the grays kept their wills, the deed to the house and other papers in a safe deposit box which somehow survived the intensity of the fire. preparing for a major disaster was the focus of this event, sponsored by san mateo county. families have come here to learn how to racket to an earthquake and other disasters. >> it's going to be coming out of the ground. >> everyone wanted to know how

to turn the gas off in the case of an explosion like the one in san bruno, there are things one can do. >> you want to make sure you get out of the house, and make sure your neighbors get out and you want to have a place to call family member outside the area to let them know you're okay. if everybody in the family calls that person you don't have to worry about who is missing. >> that's what the grays did. >> we had our son in arizona as our contact person. and anyone could call there. >> the debris cleanup will again next week. the bay area air quality management district will install monitors to check what particles under the air. >> what's going to happen. sensing many things now. >> margaret was in her house when the explosion occurred last this. -- thursday she is having a hard time sleeping. >> my body is shaking. i'll be all right.

lawsuit. all week long, state and federal lawmakers have been pushing pg&e to release a list of the 100 most risky pipelines. now pg&e is expected to release that list monday. >> it's our responsibility to take care of all the risks in the city and be prepared for all of them. i feel like we do a good job doing that as good as we can be. we will look forward any additional information, and use that information to better prepare ourselves for the worst outcome. >> alan: pg&e has been reluck can't to release the list, citing national security concerns. they will appear at the council meeting on september 28th. a burned koran was discovered this week in san francisco. the muslim civil rights group care reports the holly -- --

the threat of violence in the country. we have this report from kabul on the real test that's just beginning. >> reporter: despite threats of death, 3.6 million afghans dipped their fingers in purple ink and braved voting. >> why did you vote? >> voting is our right he says, and members of par -- parliament provide a bridge between the government and the people. afghan officials had low expectations and labeled the day a success. but mocks of taliban violence and intimidation took their toll. turnout dropped 25% from last year and the violence continued today. during an interview in eastern afghanistan the -- they attacked a polling station. >> hundreds of thousands of security forces are trying to defend the vote. this is supposed to be an

afghan-led day so the afghan national police are the first ring of security. behind them the afghan national army, and only then will international troops provide security support. in some ways the next step might be more difficult. counting and catching fraud. today afghan officials successfully captured thousands of fake voting carts, but allegations are cheating are expected to be rampant likely overwhelming a weak system. >> absolutely no question. counting is a much more difficult proposition. >> reporter: that count will determine whether afghans gain trust in their fraternal jim democracy or lose faith that their government represents them. abc news. kabul. >> alan: back home one of california's larger insurers has the go-ahead to raise rates. the department of insurance approved the rate hike for aetna.

average premiums will go up 19%. the mask increase -- maximum increase would be 30%. blue shield and health net were allowed to go forward with similar raises. it affects 90% of policies. toyota reached a settlement with relatives of a family of people killed in an accident. three people were killed last year wherein their lexus sped out of control, launched off an embankment and burst into flames. investigators found a wrong size floor mat trapped the accelerator causing the car to speed as fast as 120 miles-per-hour. the terms of the settlement were not announced. the search for a wanted sex offender in the bay area.

morning, 5:00 a.m., showers parading from north bay to the south bay, 8:00 a.m. we should see those spread toward the golden gate bridge, and if you're going to the giants' game or raiders' game at 1:00, you'll see this front starts to die off a little bit. so look for the showers to be ending as the games begin. just sprinkle or two. looks like most of this will be tomorrow morning. most of it will be in the north bay. the peninsula, east bay, and south bay maybe close to a trace in some locations. highs tomorrow, a little cooler than today. 73 for san jose. at the coast mid-60s half moon bay 64. 71 for redwood city. san francisco, 67. north bay, 78 for ukiah, 72 for napa. the clearing beginning in the north bay first. oakland tomorrow, 68. 72 for fremont. east bay inland, brentwood 76.

>> alan: spending their weekend in washington for the value voters summit. the conference is getting extra attention because of growing friction when the republican party and the tea party. >> reporter: there was an enormous show of fours -- force by the tea party in washington dc. the gathering heard from republican poll particulars like newt gingrich and michelle balk maune who called on the audience to embrace the tea party message. some poll particulars aren't -- politicians aren't happy. murkowski who was defeated by joe miller defiantly announced in november she will be a write-in candidate. >> they say this is a futile

effort. well, perhaps it's one time that they met one republican woman who won't quit on alaska. >> reporter: those comments a subtle swipe at the former alaska governor sarah palin who has offered endorsements of several tea party candidates, including her opponent. on friday night palin praised nontraditional candidates for sending a message. >> we can't wait for 2012 to get our country back on the right track. we need to start now by electing strong leaders who aren't afraid to shake it up. >> reporter: one of those is christine o'donnell who defeated a g.o.p. establishment candidate in the dell -- deprimary -- delaware primary for the senate. >> they call is whacky. wingnuts. we call us "we the people."

>> reporter: abc news washington. >> alan: pope benedict xvi visited london today where he apologized in person to five victims who were molested by priests. after mass at west -- westminster cathedral. the pope said they were investigating the incidents and acknowledged the shame and humiliation of the victims. >> i express my deep sorrow to the innocent victims of this despicable crime. >> alan: thousands of people marched in central london today in protest of how the catholic church is handling the abuse scandal. they're demanding more accountability from the church. in kashmir today government troops opened fire on a funeral progression. three people were killed and 16 other injured. thousands of people dough identified a curfew to

participate in the funeral of a teenage boy. police say they opened fire after mourners tried to set fire to a house. more than 100 people have died in widespread protests against indian rule since june. in chile, bore hole has finally reached 33 miners trapped below the earth. it still needs to be widens before the miners could squeeze through process that could take witnesses. >> reporter: mid-morning and a breakthrough in the rescue effort. >> communications started happening with the miners. they were a big part of that process. letting us know how far we were from them. they were able to pull the plug out and measure where our bit is. we can mark the point on the drill pipe, and then break through. >> reporter: u.s. based company

and the drill bit that punched a 12-inch or 30-centimeter shift through almost half a mile of rock down to where the miners are trapped. the rig known as plan b is owned by a chilean company and is one of three trying to save the miners. it began drilling two weeks ago. >> we got a late start, and got down rather fast. >> reporter: the hardest job may still be to come. rescuers have to make the hole nearly twice as wide, big enough to bring the men back to the surface. >> the million dollar question is, how long is it going to take to widen the hole? >> how high is up? that's hard to predict. >> reporter: the mine minister said it could still take at least six weeks. >> you can imagine that we

are -- this part, we are eating the central part of the doughnut which is smaller. and now we have to eat the whole part of the doughnut. so it's a lot of more we have to remove. >> reporter: it's far from clear that plan b will actually rescue the miners. over there, a little rig nobody as plan c. that in theory can drill faster than the other two options but it's unlikely to be fired up until probably monday. as the drills grind away families camp out at the mines and preparing a cookout for chile's independence day celebration this weekend. as for the trapped miners, treats and pastries sufficiented with meat onions onions and olives, barbecued steak underground too.

the said the system detected an invalid toll tag. but he doesn't have a toll tag and never did. so fast track dug deeper and here's what happened. the system was reading an invalid toll tag from the lane adjacent to scott's called a cross-read, rare glitch but it occurred 35 times on that bridge on that day. so fast track dropped the charge entirely. >> we have dismissed the violation. a little relief when we got this. thank you very much. you guys are wonderful. >> so how can you prove you paid cash if you're mistakenly labeled as a violator? fast track says get a pass and you won't have to worry. scott has a simpler solution. he asks for a receipt. 7 on your side. >> alan: he had just thrown a touchdown pass. moments later, he was dead.
