in the news this morning, san jose police chase a man holding his wife and baby at knifepoint up and down freeways at speeds at nearly hundred miles per hour. >> top two candidates for governor have a much more heated second debate. immigration policy takes center stage. >> it's a cloudy start to your sunday. mist and drizzle throughout the bay area and much cooler today. >> good morning everyone. thank you for joining us. we start off with a high-speed chase along bay area freeway that has ended early this morning. san jose police were responding to reports of a family dispute. they say a mother and her baby were being held at knifepoint inside that speeding truck. the incident started in san jose just before 11:00 last night. police the highway patrol plus several other agencies chased the truck all the way to san francisco on highway 101 the

driver then changed directions and headed south again into daly city. back down the peninsula on 280. just after midnight. it ended the truck suddenly crashed at woodside road. the man got out, jumped over the overpass, falling 30 feet to the concrete below. he survived the fall and was taken to stanford hospital. his condition is unknown. the baby was in that child carrier and was not injured. the mother was unhurt but obviously pretty shaken up by that ordeal. san jose firefighters spent last night cleaning up a spill that sent a thousand gallons of diesel fuel into guadalupe creek. they were called to the creek just after 5:00. firefighters say a generator on the roof of the at&t building malfunctioned and leaked that fuel. diesel made it to a drain on the roof and eventually went into

the creek where it caused minor environmental damage. this morning political pundits and candidates will be assessing last night's gubernatorial debate. the tone of the second encounter held at fresno state university was far more confrontational than the first debate at u.c. davis. just four questions in meg whitman was asked about the legal status of her former housekeeper. >> jerry, you should be ashamed. >> the gloves came off after meg whitman accused jerry brown of orchestrating the scandal over her former housekeeper that admitted being an illegal immigrant. >> you and your surrogates put her deportation at risk, you put her out there. you should be ashamed for sacrificing her on the altar of your political ambition. >> brown denied it and fired back. >> don't run for governor if you

she fell down a flight of stairs while fighting him but she was successful at taking him off. >> you wonder when it's going to end. >> mattie and her roommates have had a chain lock and they also have their pit bull. they still don't feel safe. >> i wake up to the noises now more than i ever have. >> police blame the first three attacks on 22-year-old antonio muton and they say they have dna to prove it. he is in jail accused of one rape and two other attempted rapes. his bail is set at $12 million. the apartment complex has added security guards but residents would still like to see them work harder to protect them.

between south san jose, downtown and points north. each weekday morning, northbound leave the santa teresa station at three different times each afternoon. southbound express trains leave the bay point station at several times. they offer free wi-fi internet access, look for the cars with wi-fi on board stickers. >> once again, oakland finds itself did he say pratsly short of police officers. this weekend, dozens of volunteers are going door to door. they were launching a grassroots campaign for two ballot measures this they hope will prevent more police layoffs. vic lee reports. >> oakland high student carla rehearsed her lines. she and others volunteered to go door to door campaigning for the two ballot measures which will raise money for public safety

terrorist teams are zeroing on targets on the continent. intelligence and law enforcement officials have information suggesting the terrorists are ready the strike against public places such as airports, hotels and tourist attractions. these new al-qaeda threats which could happen at any time could be similar to the deadly 2008 shooting spree in mumbai. they have not identified a specific target but they are believed to include england, france and germany. some countries are taking precautions. sweden has raised their alert to highest level. hundreds have thousands of americans are in europe at any one time. a travel alert is less serious an travel warning. although the government cannot keep americans from going there or force them to return home. a formal warning could result in cancelled flights and hotel bookings. >> the voice of osama bin laden

his name has not been released. police have no information on the suspect. oakland police are investigating a shooting that took place in the back seat of a taxicab this weekend. it happened yesterday morning around 7:00 in the fruitvale district on harrington street. one of their drivers picked up a fare and someone walked up and shot the passenger in the back seat. the cabbie drove the victim to a nearby hospital for treatment. in north richmond, a transformation is taking place. ugly vacant lots are being changed from magnets for crime and drugs and blight to small gardens of hope and bounty for urban neighborhoods. eric thomas reports. >> in what used to be a vacant lot in north richmond, shovels and a mountain of mulch are bringing people together. >> we're coming here to make it better. here is a small plot of land on third street in north richmond

he was paying as much $454 to register the truck. he figured that was the going rate until a friend with the same truck mentioned he was paying $87. so darrell went down to the dmv and asked why. >> when i told them that was odd. they told me why don't you go ahead and pay it. >> darrell said not if he was being overcharged. finally they checked the computer and found a big mistake. the record said he paid 6/9,000 for the old truck and instead of -- $69,000 for the old truck instead of $6900. the dmv was charging ten times too much for all these years. >> i'm totally blown away. it's valued at $69,000 and nobody caught it. >> it added up to 1360 over four years when he should have paid

$134. he pointed this out to the dmv. >> they start talking about statute of limitations even though it was their fault. >> dmv said they would give him back $532 but too late to get refund for three years or more. that is when he called 7 on your side and we got on top of things. we contacted the dmv and it tells us, indeed, someone at dmv added one too many zeros when keying in the price of darrell's truck. the three-year time limit has past, however with our urging the agency agreed to help darrell file a special application with the state to get all his money back. this week, the agency said it will grant him the full $1,219 in overpaid fees. >> i'm very grateful to what they do.
