outside a vacant hotel where a group of homeless advocates had taken over. good evening. i'm alan wang the group marched into the hotel in the tenderloin tonight. police are not allows anyone else in, but they are not trying to get anyone out either. lessee brinkly is in the newsroom with more. lessee? >> it is a waiting game right now, alan, as police try to track down the owner of the hotel. it was declared to be the first world homeless day, 10-10-10. an activist decided to urn it vacant housing into homeless housing. >> it is great to be out here fighting with you. >> families, immigrants and students banned together at civic center plaza calling

themselves the creative housing liberation. unfurling a huge world homeless banner they marched down city streets to the vai can't leslie hotel at the corner of eddie and lar con and they entered it. they went room to room through the hotel hanging banners and taking over. homeless came through the door and settled into empty rooms with running water and electric -- electricity until police arrived. >> we had it open to the public. anybody who needed a place to sleep could get in. >> activists say there are 36,000 vai can't units in -- vacant units, and on any night 6,000 san franciscans have nowhere to stay. >> it is a disgrace to see three times as many empty housing in the city as people on the streets. something needs to be done.

unanswered questions because most of the potential witnesses ran from the chaotic scene. >> the officers saw people fleeing, running away from the building and fleeing in high rates of speeds in cars as they left the area and not much left for us when we got there. >> the banquet room was rented for a private event, but some of the information on the rental application including the person who rented the place appeared to be incorrect and incomplete. two radio stations are working to get back on the air tonight after a fire destroyed their transmitters. the station served the vietnamese and spanish communities. it started with a car fire north of highway 101 and mckee road. cecilia vega has a look at the damage and the political fallout. >> we have been off the air since 5:20ish. >> that's when a grass fire spread destroying the studio's

transmitter. it is the only station in the bay area broadcasting raiders' games in spanish. crews raced against the clock to build a temporary transmitter in time for today's game. >> we are losing revenue as we speak. >> a loss that can be blamed on city budget cuts. 45 were laid off this summer and a water engine from a nearby fire station was also on the chopping block. >> the engine right across this freeway would have been due to this fire and maybe they could have kept it to a smaller grass fire. >> the charred debris was the back backdrop for the latest union press conference to announce it to the bargaining table. it is the same offer the union made in the past. the same offer the city says fell $6 million short. >> we are not providing the same level of service. we want to bring back the firefighters, but we need concession to do it to pay for

the huge pension increases that are causing us to cut services. >> frustrated by a lack of details, this councilmember showed up to learn more about the offer. he ended up facing off with union bosses. >> it just doesn't add up. >> the reality is you need so many dollars to bring back the positions. >> the two radio stations don't know when they will be back. for now they remain silent. >> they cannot do anything with our building anymore. >> now, the san jose fire department does not have an official response time for the fire. the computer program that tracks response times in san jose is down. but a spokesman for the fire department said with the heavy winds and the dry grass in this area, it took crews more than eight hours to finally contain this fire. reporting in san jose, cecilia vega, abc news. a review of public records show the california public utilities commission rarely finds p -- fines pg&e for

pipeline violations. the san francisco chronicle looked at six years of records and found that even though pg&e had more pipeline infractions than any other pipeline operator, the puc did not issue a single fine. pg&e accounts for more than 60% of the probable violations. the utility is under investigation for the september 9th san bruno pipeline blast that killed eight people. fox news claims to have sources who have identified the person in the jerry brown campaign who used an offensive slur against meg whitman. the comment was disweptly recorded on voicemail. brown thought he hung up the phone when leaving a message for the police union. fox quotes, people with knowledge with what happened say it was brown's wife who suggested calling whitman a whore for cuting a deal to get the union's endorsement.

>> brown's campaign did not respond to our e-mails today, and it hasn't said who used that word. whitman is demanding a personal apology. the two candidates have a debate in marin county next tuesday. a fox news source notes brown's wife, anne, a former executive of the gap cannot exactly be fired from the campaign. well, the mid-term elections, the congressional elections are a little more than three weeks away, and some observers suspect republicans will make major gains on capitol hill and some see it as a referendum on president obama's first two years in office. the president himself hit the campaign trail in philadelphia today. it, marked his -- it, mad his

san jose right now with clear skies and 62 degrees as well. we'll keep it clear. a much warmer day as we head into monday and tuesday. and because of the warm up, because we will get into those dry offshore winds, that has prompted a fire weather watch in affect for parts of the bay area. we'll get to that in a moment. they had to scour the low clouds and fog off the coast. we will keep it clear skies across the bay area. we'll keep it mild overnight especially in the east bay with anteing yo. mid to low 60s. 59 for concord and san francisco 57. 52 for santa clara. santa rosa tonight getting down to 53 degrees. all right, this is going to be the set up for the next several days. high pressure is continuing to dominate. it will really start to move overhead as we get to monday, tuesday and wednesday. as it does so it will bring us

the offshore winds, those dry, warm winds going from land to sea. as we go to monday night and tuesday, it also means a chance of some fire danger. the possibility for the north bay mountains and the east bay hills. we do have a fire weather watch in affect beginning at 6:00 monday extending through 6:00 a.m. wednesday. very dry fuels have low humidity as the winds come sweeping down and dries out the air mass. it looks like we will keep a close eye on this as we continue to see the offshore winds develop. monday night and few morning, a good chance of this. for tomorrow get ready for warmer temperatures. 86 for san jose and 84 for cupertino. the beach day tomorrow. half moon bay up to 72 degrees. we will go 83 for redwood city. san francisco, 78. in the north bay, temperatures

the giants refuse to lose. down in the 9th, the g-men rally for a victory. sanchez clinched on sunday making his first post season start. ross pops one up and brooks conrad had a beat on it, but he will drop it. his third error of the season. 1-0 giants. san sanchez was up. he ends the 6th and one of his 11k's. he leads with the lead in the 8th, but sergio romo could not hold it. can you kidding me? a dramatic pinch hit 2-run homer and it is 2-1 atlanta. not looking good. with two outs in the 9th and aubrey huff comes up clutch. the game is tied at two. and tim lincecum, check him out in the dug out, he is loving it. next batter and buster posey grounds it to second right through conrad's legs and his third error of the game. freddy sanchez scores and
