>> a trial date for the u.c. berkeley hikers being held in iran. >> rain falling in the north bay but it's mild and breezy across the rest of the bay area. wind advisory, more heavy rain on the way next. >> thank you, lisa and thank you for joining us. good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. the san francisco giants are returning home this afternoon victorious! they are headed to the world series for the first time in eight years after beating the philadelphia phillies 3-2 last night to win the national league pennant. champagne showers were flowing after the game in the giants' locker room. they trailed 2-1 in the third inning when buster posey chopped one to third base and beat the throw to first. aubrey huff scored tying the game at two. it stayed that way until the 8th

inning when juan aribay gave the giants the lead with a clutch home run. then in the 9th inning with two runners aboard on base with the phillies, brian wilson strikes out ryan howard looking to end the game. >> not just one guy that carries this club. it takes the whole team every night. that's how we've been doing it. found a way to do it. a big series, sanchez struggled tonight. the bullpen saved us. whole bullpen. that's the way it's been all year for us. >> the giants come back to town this afternoon. they play the texas rangers in the world series on wednesday, game 1, 4:30 at at&t park. giants fans celebrated the win loudly but peacefully after the game. (cheering) >> yeah, there were hundreds of fans gathered outside at&t park

to cheer, honk horns and just celebrate. there were a few noise complaints from neighbors but police say there were no problems, just a lot of traffic. hundreds of fans immediately converged on the giants' door to buy up souvenirs and t-shirts. >> celebrate world series all over again! >> kind of a crazy crowd, isn't it? >> beautiful! that's what it's all about. go giants! >> love the glasses, guy. on union street, the bar none was packed with giants fans who just went crazy when the game ended and the giants were in the world series. season ticket holders have priority to get into the world series. if you are a fan trying to score a few tickets for game 1, it's gonna cost you a small fortune. stubhub, the official secondary market for major league baseball

tickets has them on sale for $460 to $2,550. we have a graphic there for you. let's tell you about e-bay. you're gonna pay between $850 to $4,000. and on craigslist they range, there you go from $450 to $4,150. so very pricey tickets. well, what about the weather for game one which is on wednesday? lisa' going to tell us all about that in just a second. but we do know that last night's celebrations were going on in the pouring rain. it's the season's first significant rainfall. 24 homes and businesses lost power when a fallen tree pulls down some utility lines in ross. (chain saw) >> and this is firefighters slicing a tree into small pieces after it toppled on to chop hill road in guyserville.

and traffic moves briskly through the rain on highway 101 near lucky drive. that is often an area that floods when it rains. so as promised here's meteorologist lisa argen with the forecast. >> good morning, carolyn. we could still see some urban and small stream flooding today when the heavier rain hits the central part of the bay by about the noon hour. you can see already beginning to bear down in the north bay. live doppler 7 hd shows it is raining up north heelsberg, elsewhere light rain. win advisory in effect. with the rain sliding to the south and east, the winds gusting along the coast with higher elevations with 25 to 35 mph. as we put this in motion, you notice most of the bay area looking at a break right now but this all begins to sag to the south and east and we're looking at an additional 1 to 2 inches in the north bay. perhaps a quarter of an inch to a half inch around the south bay and the east bay.

(cheering) >> sayinger voices and messages fill the space in front of city hall. it's a rally for oscar grant just 13 days before convicted bart police officer johannes mehserle will be sentenced for grant's death. >> i think a special connection to oscar grant and other victims. >> standing alongside the grant family, members of several unions, including ilwu, the international long shore and warehouse union. they're the ones responsible for loading and off-loading cargo ships and bay area ports. instead of going to work, they are here. >> it's a huge deal. it is a huge deal for us to shut down the port of oakland. >> only one ship came into oakland's port and the port spokesperson says business really wasn't disrupted. regardless, those here hope this rally will have an impact. at least on judge roberts perry. he'll decide mehserle's fate on november 5th. >> anxiety.

there's concern. i mean, you know, if we were betting people based on the history, you know, johannes mehserle is going to go home on probation. that's what this rally is about. no one wants to see that. grab a ticket. wave it in the air! >> grant's family and friends want mehserle to serve a minimum of 14 years. >> grant's family will read this letter in the courtroom before sentencing. >> oscar deserves justice. he shouldn't have been shot. he shouldn't have died january 1st, 2009. his life and his experiences were robbed from him. >> the pleas may reach a los angeles courtroom which is exactly what mehserle's attorney doesn't want to happen. >> the judge should grant him probation, release him immediately, and let him reunite with his family. and that will be a mightily unpopular decision, too, if that's what the judge does. >> there was a huge police presence. officers were all around the plaza and many more were

stationed on adjacent streets. so there were no issues and no arrests. in oakland, lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. >> the two u.c. berkeley grads being held in iran have a trial day. iran's official news agency says the two will appear before the revolutionary court on november 6. fattal and bauer were arrested near the iran iraq border. she was released in september, a classified u.s. report leaked on friday suggests that iranians crossed the border into iraq to arrest the three americans. coming up next why peninsula hospital plans to shed its skilled nursing and dialysis units. and transit first. san francisco considers proposals to get

>> closed captioning brought to you by mancini sleepworld. marin county's pension system is underfunded by some $2 billion. that's according to a study by a stanford public policy professor. today's independent journal reports stanford professor joe nation assumed a much lower rate of return on the fund's investments in marin county. it assumes a 4% risk free annual return while marin is counting on earning 7.75%. stanford study estimates the chance of marin county meeting its pension obligations is just 16%. peninsula health services plans to sell off its skilled nursing and dialysis unit to save money. today san francisco's examiner says the private health company plans to sell its reno

dialysissters in san mateo and burlingame. they serve 210 patients. a spokesperson says the changes are due to the coming federal healthcare reform which medicare reimbursements to hospitals expected to drop sharply. san francisco supervisors are set to vote this week on the latest proposals for the city's transit first policy. transit first is designed to discourage people from driving cars in the city. and encourage alternate forms of transportation. the board will vote on increased car share use doubling the number of people riding bicycles in the city and reducing the number of vehicles used by city agencies. board of supervisors president david chew is introducing this resolution and it sets a goal of reducing car trips in the city 20% by the year 2020. lisa argen here now with a preview of the accu-weather forecast. >> we have 67 mild degrees at the airport but delays of an hour 31 minutes.

and it has grown in popularity ever since. the idea is to stop the traffic and let people use the streets for all sorts of family activities. this year nine events have taken place throughout the city and that is up from six last year. unfortunately i guess it's going to be a steady rain? >> once it starts, it's gonna push through and be out of here by late today. but, yeah, the rain will increase throughout the day and become heavy across the bay area by mid-afternoon. right now we just have a light rain in the north bay but a live look outside and it's gray. you can't tell much. the sun coming up at 7:27. our winds are kicking up and they'll get stronger at sunrise through the afternoon. a wind advisory in effect and we'll be looking at maybe a little sierra snow way up there about 7500 feet. right now looking at totals that are pretty impressive. sonoma 2.77. oakland over a third of an inch.

san rafael 1.28. livermore and san jose about a quarter of an inch. so the rainfall amounts varying widely across the bay area. but this is a sure bet with the rain holding together a stronger pacific storm system will send waves of precipitation across the bay today. up through ukiah, cloverdale, santa rosa and starting to shift throughout chico. but we are still on the south end of this thing here. we'll be looking for the winds to increase as well along the coast south of the golden gate bridge. so here's the plan for today. you notice about 5:00 we've got light rain around the bay. and then as the morning progresses we're at 7:00, 8:00, heavier rain through santa rosa, san rafael and does continue to sweep on southward by about 9:00, 10:00, the heavy rain spreading through concord, livermore, the santa cruz

mountains looking at another 1 to 2 inches of rain. morgan hill looking at pretty good rain. throughout the afternoon, more yellow across the bay. here we are about 5:00. you'll notice the heaviest rain trying to push south of half moon bay. right now it's mild with the southeast wind. 62 fremont, 62 mountainview. and those winds gusting to 22 mph around hayward. 31 mph at the airport and gusts up to 25 mph in napa. so that will be the trend throughout the afternoon so things kind of blowing around if you don't have them secured. light rain, breeze and mild this morning. the rain picking up throughout the later morning hours with a slight chance of showers tomorrow. here's what's to come. the area of low pressure and the associated cold front continues to sag to the south and east bringing the rain and the winds this afternoon. and some winds may be gusting up to 45 mph above a thousand feet. it's heavy rain right now. the canyon and gustier winds at

60 mph. two-day rainfall totals, 2 to 4 inches in the north bay. an additional inch perhaps the peninsula, a half inch in the south bay. highs today in the upper 50s to the low to mid-60s from fremont to san jose and down by the monterey bay. you too will see the heavier rain by later afternoon. 64 morgan hill. the accu-weather 7-day forecast, a second system and that pushes on through just a few leftover showers tomorrow, the bulk of monday should be nice. we'll see some sunshine tuesday and wednesday about the same. and that includes the giants game holding off the rain until thursday and friday. >> okay. so at least for game one. >> at least. >> and don't they stay, isn't there another one? >> i'm sure -- that will be in the rain. what are you telling me, chuck? tell us. the following day? oh, okay. there you go. all right. giants fans that we are. we don't know the schedule.

♪ welcome back, everyone. despite historically low mortgage rates, home sales fell again in the bay area last month. they're down more than 19% compared with september of last year. the second worst september in 19 years. abc 7's laura anthony looks into why people are simply afraid to buy new homes. >> according to dataquick, it's the second slowest september in nearly 20 years in the bay area. 27% below average. >> people are a little apprehensive what's happening with the economy. >> louie is a realtor in the sunnyvale area. she does see a fair number of

buyers still on the fence even though interest rates remain quite low. >> people are uncertain. job security and, you know, just with what's happening in the economy, the elections. but people are still buying. >> there is a certain schizophrenia in the market. this sunnyvale property sold above asking price with multiple offers while other languish. she believes the low overall sales numbers are partly due to a backlog of pending short sales. the short sales are a sale of a home for less than the amount owed on the loan. >> the listings include 48% short sales. we have homes that are rolling around in short sales that just won't close. >> we're trying. >> san ramon's tom baker wants to buy, has put in offers on homes that are in short sales. >> we put an offer on the short sale, go through the agreement with the banks, get the agreement, and at the last minute the people say, ah, it's not really for sale. we wanna file bankruptcy so we

can live here another nine months. >> while sales are off, prices have gone up some in the bay area. in september 2009, the median sale price of a home in the bay area was $365,000. last month $395,000. an increase of 8%. that's still well off the median price at the height of the market in july 2007. of $665,000. the current price, $395,000, is 40% lower. in san ramon, laura anthony, abc 7 news. >> first lady michelle obama is due to visit the bay area tomorrow to help raise money for democratic candidates. mrs. obama is a very big draw at fund-raising dinners. house speaker nancy pelosi's office confirms the first lady will be at the fairmont hotel in san francisco tomorrow night. it will be her second bay area visit since her husband took office. she was also here in june of

2009. this morning president obama is back at the white house just nine days until his midterm elections. yesterday he closed out four gruelling days of campaigning and fund-raising after stops here in the bay area and elsewhere in california, oregon, washington and nevada. at the same time sarah palin is encouraging republicans to keep the momentum going. abc reports. >> president obama wrapped up his longest campaign swing so far this season. five states in four days at a rally in minneapolis. he urged democrats to get out and vote for mark dayton locked in a close race for governor. >> mark dayton has spent his life fighting for minnesota. and now i need all of you to fight for mark dayton so we can keep this moving forward. >> while the president is not on the ballot november 2nd, his agenda could be seriously crippled by republicans gaining control of the house and senate. >> you need you fired up!

after off-duty police and firefighters claim he illegally removed campaign signs. the officers and firefighters are campaigning against a ballot measure that the councilman supports. the no on measure v campaign posted this youtube.com video. it shows councilman oliveira handing over several no on v signs just released from the back of his car. he supports the yes on v campaign. if passed, measure v would limit the raises police and firefighters can gain through contract arbitration. he claims he removed the signs from public property and san jose bans putting campaign signs on public land. measure v opponents insists he illegally took them from private party. >> a debate upon sponsored by

faster ships and more whales. it is a dangerous combination where feeding grounds and shipping lanes converge. abc 7's allen wong reports on a new effort to reduce a growing number of whale strikes. >> the crew of this ship didn't

realize a whale was impaled on the bow until it cruised into port last september. earlier this month an endangering blue whale and its fetus washed ashore in san mateo county. so far this year sixth whales have been struck by ships. three were endangered species. >> the hemorrhages and the breaking of the vertebrae in the whale all consistent with ship strike injuries. >> the coast guard says it's seeing a change in shipping patterns. >> they're headed out to the 24 mile line as fast as possible. >> and the ships are traveling down shipping lanes that run right through three national marine sanctuaries. >> no one would ever choose to put a national marine sanctuary on top of a busy airport, sfo. but that's essentially what we have. >> at a meeting to address the problem, the pacific environment, an oceanic conservation group, suggested a speed limit of 10 knots or about

15 mph to give the whales enough time to get out of the way. most ships travel up to 25 knots as they approach the san francisco bay. >> representatives from the shipping industry declined to speak with us on camera but they say being restricted to 10 knots in the shipping lane would definitely affect their tight delivery schedule. >> they all have a very complicated logistics chain. so it's planned very carefully and disruptions are problematic. >> this is part of the coast guard's port access route study which has a goal of using public input to improve the safety of both ships and whales. in oakland, allen wong, abc 7 news. >> well, some airport delays and things like that with the weather that we're having. >> yeah. already beginning to slide down the range from sonoma county into marin county and the wind has been with us. a little break early this morning. but from sfo we've got delays already stacking up an hour and 31 minutes. 67 degrees with winds gusting to

31 mph. rainfall totals, they've been impressive. golden gate bridge right now not much going on but within the next hour things will be getting wet in southern marin and san francisco. 2.77 inches in sonoma. oakland over a third of an inch. san rafael 1.28. livermore.15. .8 in san jose and just about a quarter inch of rain. within the last hour the rain has begun to sag south from northern california and now we're looking at some pretty good rain around saint helena, yachtsville, santa rosa and windsor. so highway 101 and further south you notice the green beginning to show up as you head down towards wood acre and pretty soon in mill valley and southern marin and the golden gate and across 80 into the east bay. so it's wet in the sacramento valley. they're expecting anywhere from 2 inches of rain in the lower elevations to more than that in

the higher elevations where we have a winter storm warning in effect for the sierra nevada. about 7300 feet. the winds and rain increasing throughout the morning hours and the afternoon hours. here's a look at our computer animation and notice the yellow, the darker green. yep, it's all on the way heading south. and by about 8:00, 9:00 this morning you'll see sonoma county getting into the heavier rain. in san francisco, the east bay, concord and livermore, 10:00, 11:00. by the lunch hour we've got heavy rain in the santa cruz mountains. the winds, too, along the coast, half moon bay, san francisco gusting up to some 45 mph. it's not until about 7:00 tonight that the cold front will sweep on through and take the rain with it. 62 mountain view, 67 half moon bay and the winds this morning gusting to 20 mph. santa rosa 18. 18 mph oakland. look at the airport, 31 mph. 22 mph at hayward. light rain and breezy the

southern part of the bay, the east bay heavier rain beginning to sag south from the north bay and then just a slight chance of showers tomorrow. here's what's to come today. the cold front, it's a strong one bringing gusty winds as well till about 5:00 today. and that's for the higher elevations and the coast. rainfall estimates 1 to 2 inches in the north bay, a half inch to an inchel central bay. about three-quarters of an inch to maybe 2 inches in the santa cruz mountains. the storm is warm but maybe a few areas of snow, winds gusting to 60 mph in the sierra nevada. 64 palo alto today so a little more mild than yesterday. not like you're getting a chance to enjoy the weather even though the temperatures will continue to come up in the next couple of days with a few peeks of sun. we'll call it partly cloudy tomorrow after an early shower. upper 60s to 70 on wednesday for the giants game and we'll be looking at perhaps more rain thursday, friday and saturday. perhaps a colder system as well.

so we are in the thick of it. >> yeah. and halloween. >> and halloween, uh-huh. too far out. >> to figure out. all right. thank you, lisa. ten years ago we introduced you had to an educator teaching lessons about the civil rights movement, lessons not learned in the classroom, lessons still relevant even with barack obama in the white house. this morning we salute jeff steinberg and his unique program. a bay area history teacher jeff steinberg is celebrating the tenth anniversary of what he calls sojourn to the past. he'll have dozens follow him along the civil rights trail. >> i don't call this a black studies program. this is our history as americans. >> this is a lesson learned outside the classroom. in his one of a kind program, high school students board buses and head to the epicenter of the

struggle for social justice and equality. they take a ten-day trip to the south. tracing the places and meeting some of the people who propelled the civil rights movement. we went along ten years ago. >> it's been overwhelming being here in birmingham. >> in the past decade, 6,000 bay area students have taken the journey and for some touching the living history of the civil rights movement has been life-changing. we met gomez on the inaugural trip. >> this is going to fade away when i leave? or is it gonna stick with me? he was one of the kids from three bay area high schools who followed the path of pioneers. like elizabeth, one of the so-called little rock nine. she was their age when she braved an angry mob to integrate central high school in 1957. they actually met her and the woman screaming in this famous photo. that taught them about forgiveness, something that's not in the text books.

they toured the memphis hotel where dr. king was murdered. they sat in the birmingham church where a bombing killed four little girls. they shared the pain of one. >> we came by change. >> this is lolal gomez today. he is 26 years old and works with low income residents in san francisco's mission neighborhood. >> it was a moment in my life in helping me know what i wanted to do with my life. >> u.s. congressman john lewis was a non-violent protestor beaten during the 1960s. this summer he introduced a resolution which passed unanimously honoring soldiers for their powerful impact on young lives. >> it was our responsibility to help young leaders. >> evers is a soldier and board member. her husband was an icon in the
