[ male announcer ] wanchai ferry. restaurant quality chinese in your grocer's freezer. >> alan: good evening everyone. investigators are trying to figure out how a napa state hospital patient, dechained insane, managed to kill a psychiatric tech next there today. we're live in napa where security issues are being raised. >> reporter: this the victim is a 54-year-old woman from concord, her name is donna gross, the suspect, jess massem the hospital is not saying much about what happened last night, just the bare facts. people who work inside the

hospital have a lot to say. we had to disguise their identities. >> how scared are you? >> it's a ten, 11, 15 like yesterday. >> that is a long-time nurse from napa state mental hospital, talking about the murder of donna gross, a staff member, by a patient. staff tell abc-7 the victim went to lunch yesterday afternoon and was found dead two hours later. >> i heard she had been stabbed several times. >> reporter: what most saddens and frightens staff is this has been a long time come can. they have filed complaints about patients classified as violent inmates and they are worried about the lack of security for patients who walk around freely, and patients judged to be criminally ill who do not have to worry about consequences.

>> people that were strangled, people were cornered alone in patients rooms, assaulted for no apparent reason. >> where's the police? >> they're not on unit. >> i was actually surprised to see the sheriffs coming through the gate. it's like real police officers that are going to at least investigate. >> reporter: when abc-7 asked for access to public areas of the property, they're saying police officers threatened to arrest us. the nurse tells us that police and hospital management knew about a threat against staff, but they were not warned about it. they say why not? we have more on this at 6:00. reporting from napa, abc-7 news. >> alan: the power has been knocked out for more than 14,000

customers in west oakland. that outage started around 2:00 and was centered near a pg&e substation. residents heard a boom and saw a flash. b.a.r.t. had to shut down it's 12th street station. there's no estimate when power will be restored. the first big rain of the season is creating problems around the bay area in the north bay, there's a foot of standing water on highway 115. and in this huge oak tree came crashing down into a house this morning. all four adults in the house at the time are fine. >> at first i thought it was a really long thunder. >> yeah. >> like a really long, loud thunder, and then it sounded like an earthquake. >> alan: on the peninsula, pg&e crews worked to fix a downed powerline that cot caught in trees in san mateo.

this is traffic on el massachusetts camino real today. a good reminder to slow down in this rainy weather and pay attention. the weather is causing two to three hour delays at san francisco international airport. the delays are affecting incoming and outgoing flights. let's go to leigh glasser and some month -- monsoon like conditions. >> leigh: you're exactly right. we told you we would have winds and rain. the winds are dying down a little bit. you can get a sense from the live doppler 7 hd that things are starting to push on out of the area. we take you up towards the north pavement still -- north bay. the east bay starting to dry out a little bit. the livermore valley still seeing some rain there, and san jose, down towards morgan hill

and gilroy, some rain. folks, this was a soaker. st. helena, five inches of rain, two in mill valley, san francisco and oakland, close to an inch. we will look at the forecast coming up. >> alan: this wet weather delayed the triumphant return of the san francisco giants this afternoon. the arrived at at&t park just about 15 minutes ago. there's matt cain, freddie sanchez. they won the national league championship and a berth in the world series. we're live at at at&t park where 150 hard-core fans are greeting the giants in the power -- pouring rain. >> there's about 250 standing out here, and for the last 15 minutes they have been going crazy.

posey, bumgarner, cain, and uribe greeting the fans personally. and everybody was having a terrific time. and they arrived here about 5 -- 15 minutes ago, and the celebrations are going on, in the celebration of a game that ended last night that none of this fans are soon to forget. >> yeah! >> since last nights' win, giants fans have been celebrating the national league champs. the celebration is nowhere near over. fans braved the wins at at&t park to welcome the giants this afternoon, chanting and singing the giants' praises. >> the best thing to happen in this city for a long time. thank you, our uribe. >> we're out here.

iran's official news agency reports they will appear before the revolution court on november 6th. they were arrested near the iran-iraq border a year ago. one woman was released in september. a classified u.s. report leaked on friday suggests that iranians crossed the boredder in iraq to arrest the three americans. in the california governor's race, new poll shows jerry brown is stretching his lead over who it who it who -- meg whitman. this morning brown visited black churches in los angeles,; todays university of southern california los angeles times poll shows brown with 50% of the vote compared to whitman's 38%. last month, the same poll showed brown with just a 5% lead. whitman's campaign released a statement saying the latest poll

is out of dade and statistic which i flawed. the same poll found barbara boxer has a slight edge over carly fiorina carly fiorina. >> alan: first lady michelle obama is due to visit the bay area tomorrow to help raise money for democratic candidates. nancy pelosi's office confirmed the first lady will be attending a fundraiser at the paramount -- fairmont hotel. she was a huge draw when she paid a visit here back in june of 2009. just ahead. the south bay councilman reportedly caught taking political signs. one group is now offering a big reward for information, while the council member says he did nothing wrong. the wet weather continues. leigh glaser coming up to tell you how long it will last. i inherited my father's '69 norton commando.

>> alan: san jose police and firefighters are offering a $10,000 reward to anyone who catches people illegally taking "now on measure v" campaign signs. it's one of the most contentious cam pains san jose has seen in some time. this video shows a city council member ol' -- oliverio taking a sign. he says they were placed on public property and can be taken down by him or any other volunteer on behalf of the city. >> while council member was found in possession of four signs, hundreds of signs have gone missing. >> needs to be pointed out how many illegal signs are up by miss this campaign committee all over the city. i saw over 27 illegal signs yesterday in one small area. i saw three on my drive over here. >> alan: the officers and firefighters are campaigning

noticed it's been a mild system. we're continuing with scattered showers, vying chance -- slight chance of a shower tomorrow morning, and we will remain dry through the mid-week period. this is the actual cold front. it raced across the bay area earlier in the day. we're now on the back side of it. still, quit a bit of shower activity to the north. and here's the timing. you can see most of the bulk of the rain moves on towards the south. by 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, a few lingering showers, and you can see how quickly we clear out monday afternoon and bring in some sunshine. we'll have morning fog for the community. and the high country, heavy rain and winds today. wind watch in effect, with gusts as high as 60 miles-per-hour. here's a look at the highs for
