making news on this tuesday, october 25th. >> fired up. heated moments on the campaign trail. but despite all that passion, new numbers show that many voters are still undecided. in the midwest, a superstorm is brewing today, as strong as a hurricane something not seen in nearly a century. it's legal, cheap and flying off the shelves. but should this drink be banned? good morning. and thanks for being with us. polls open one week from this morning. and millions of americans, apparently still need some time to make up their minds. >> the latest a.p. survey finds that one-third of voters still undecided. candidates and their supporters are doing all can to seal the

deal, leading to contention even in the same party. >> emily schmidt joins us from washington. >> reporter: president obama is in washington today. he's taking a quick break away from the campaign trail. but make no doubt about it, with one week to go, politics and this election tops every agenda. >> thank you very much, rhode island. >> reporter: the white house says president obama is in a fighting mood, going into the midterm, criticizing republicans' opposition to his economic plan. >> it's just playing politics. you know, if you're going to talk a big game, you need to deliver. >> reporter: the political analysts believe the president's battle is uphill. republicans look poised to take back the house and challenge the senate. few politicians are safe from criticism, even from their own party. >> to take the endorsement. >> reporter: that's what rhode island's democratic candidate for governor said about president obama. after the president went to his state but didn't endorse him because of a friendship with the independent candidate. those sorts of harsh words are

increasingly common, with seven days before the election. >> joe is not fit to lead. i have been leading this state. i have been leading this state. >> president obama is making the mistake that he thinks government is the answer to everything. >> i think job number one is jobs.tes and of the two candidates sitting here, i actually have a jobs plan. >> reporter: in delaware, republican senate candidate, christine o'donnell, says she sees this as a cause greater than herself. >> god is the reason that i'm running. >> reporter: more than 5.5 million ballots have been counted. now, it's a sprint to the finish to convince everyone else. you talked earlier about the a.p. poll that said one-third of voters undecided. we break out the numbers more. 45% of the people actually prefer, right now, the republican, that's running in their district. just 38% seem to favor the democrat. that is learnly not the kind of encouragement that democrats are looking for in this point of the

game. >> you mentioned the president is taking a quick break from the trail. but not really for very long. >> reporter: not at all. he's going to be on a multistate campaign swing. very lost-minute push over the weekend. right now, his wife is on the out in the west coast. stumping for a number of candidates. and vice president joe biden continues appearing with candidates. just yesterday, he made his 100th appearance of this election season. >> down to the wire. emily schmidt, thank you. the bitter battle for the senate in kentucky has boiled over. a rand paul supporter, literally stamped on the head of a woman who was representing the liberal group moveon.org. paul is now locked in a very tight contest with democrat, jack conway. and illinois congressman, jesse jackson jr. says he's decided not to run for mayor of chicago. jackson, the son of several rights leader, the reverend

jesse jackson, is expected to easily win re-election to the house next week. from politics, we turn to weather and what could be a potentially dangerous storm today in the midwest. >> as word of the storm's potential spread yesterday, folks in milwaukee, were securing anything that could be blown around. the worst of it could come around this morning's rush hour. >> ava dinges, has all the details. >> good morning, rob and vinita. a powerful cyclone heading into the midwest and the great lakes, could be one of the most powerful storms of all-time. ahead of that, we'll see a severe threat around the great lakes region, around chicago early in the day. this will be transitioning into indiana, and ohio, later in the day. the storms can bring damaging wind gusts, large hail, and the possibility of isolated tornados. that will continue to track eastward, into western pennsylvania, as we head into the night. if that wasn't enough, we're tracking a large shield of heavy rain. and some will be transitioning into snow across the western dakotas, in cities like

bismarck, heading into the night. the worst of the impact with the storm is going to be the wind. the storm's center is deepening, as it heads further east, into the great lakes region. its center of low pressure could be as low as a category 2 hurricane. and that tells you how strong the winds are going to be, ripping across the plains at about 35 miles per hour or 55 miles per hour, sustained winds. back to you. >> thanks. there's more weather issues to tell you about this morning. a series of strong storms has left a trail of destruction across parts of the southeast. northern alabama was slammed by powerful winds. it made quite a mess, bringing down trees and power lines. parts of tennessee also sustained damage. but there were no injuries reported. and in central georgia, no injuries, either, but plenty of lightning. some parts of the area got quarter-sized and golf ball-sized hail. despite numerous warnings, there were no tornados. we'll have complete coverage of the weather, later today on "gma." after years of delays, iran is now injecting fuel into its

first nuclear reactor. the process got under way this morning with the help of russian engineers. the plan is set to begin generating electricity early next year. but concerns remain over iran's nuclearambi ambitions. also a concern, iran's ambitions in afghanistan. afghan president, hamid karzai, has confirmed reports that he is receiving bags of money from iran, amounting to millions of dollars a year. karzai said the money is used for government expenses. and is no different than the cash payments he gets from the u.s. but officials here in this country say it's further proof that iran is wooing the afghan government, while helping the taliban at the same time. earlier this morning, china showed off its newest high-speed train. so fast, it was no match for the helicopter taking pictures of it. the train was clocked at, get this, 262 miles an hour. similar projects here in the u.s., are decades away. despite a new infusion of federal funds that will be announced later this week.

talk about an unusual soccer game in chile's capital. on one team, the rescued miners. on the other, the rescuers, along with the chilean president and the officials. this was the goal from the president himself, when he helped the rescue team to victory. now, for this morning's weather. aside from that big midwest storm we talked about earlier, gusty winds in the los angeles area. also, showers from seattle to portland. an additional six inches of snow in the cascades. and up to a foot of snow in the rocky mountains. showers in florida from miami to orlando and jacksonville. up to ten degrees above normal in the northeast. >> upper 60s here in new york and in boston. 73 in baltimore. 70 in detroit. 63 in chicago. and 50 in the twin cities. 46 degrees in salt lake city. and 64 in sacramento. business news is next this morning, including who will fill warren buffett's $100 million shoes. plus, big news from one giant in the motor city. ford announces a major growth

ago is back in the spotlight. only this time for murder. jennifer mee has been charged in the shooting death of a man in st. petersburg. police say mee, now 19, lured the victim to a vacant lot, where he was robbed and shot by two alleged accomplices. the coroner confirms it was a great white shark that killed a surfer last week centr in cen california. the shark was 17 to 18 feet long and weighed possibly 4,000 pounds. a candlelight vigil is planned tonight at the university of california santa barbara, where the victim was a student. also this morning, police are considering homicide charges after a terrible accident in downtown l.a. they say a bmw ran a red light, hit and killed a pedestrian. and then, crashed into a school bus. the three, young men inside the car tried to run away. but were quickly caught by bystanders. former olympic star, marion jones, is out with a new book today, in which she details her state in federal prison.

jones spent six months behind bars for lying to investigators for her use of performance-enhancing drugs. she says she feared for her life after fighting another inmate. and her trip to solitary conf e confinement was the worst part of her life. jones said she unknowingly used designer steroids before the 2000 summer olympics. she'll share more of her story later on "gma." world series preparations are moving right along. it starts tomorrow night in san francisco. as for last night's nfl showdown in dallas, we get the highlights from espn news. >> good morning. i'm don bell with your espn news update. and we start with "monday night football" from big "d." the cowboys hosting tom coughlin and the new york football giants. first quarter, giants down 10-0. second and goal, eli manning to hakeem nicks. giants trail 10-7. second quarter, same score. first and ten. tony romo back to pass. he gets smashed on the play. completes it to miles austin. but look at romo.
