in the news this saturday morning, mostly peaceful protests in oakland over the sentencing of johannes mehserle and police make an arrest of a san francisco socialite killed in her russian hill apartment. >> 55 downtown but one of the days will be dry and the one will be wet. i'll let you know more coming up. >> it's the aftermath of the mostly peaceful protests over the sentencing of bart police officer johannes mehserle. a los angeles judge ordered two years in prison for the former cop who killed oscar grant.

but mehserle will be do less time than that, 2 years but under credit he could serve that which is 365 days plus he gets credit for the time he served, which is 146 days, which meaning he'll be out in seven months. people who thought the sentence was too light turned in and out oakland to protest. police say fwags mostly peaceful until about 6:00 p.m. when one group moved into an opposite direction that had been pre-arranged with police. >> we are all oscar grant! >> tensions between protestors ran high. hundreds of police all dressed in riot gear outnumbered the demonstrators. the crowd zigzagged through the

city and ended up in east oakland. they created lines and boxed them in issuing orders to disperse. there were repeated acts of vandalism. you have people throwing rocks at officers and one officer injured. he was struck but is considered in good condition. there was gun ripped from another officer's gun belt. it was recovered and that is when things got tense. >> you had one officer in the gun and ripped from his gun belt and the gun was pointed at other ors, they took the suspect into custody. >> those arrested were booked and load on to buses while fellow protestors on the other side were shouting at police to let them go. the chief praised the response saying his officers did a great job of keeping the streets

straight while allowing protestors to carry out their first amendment rights. >> i'm trying to send a message that is clear. you don't get to do this in oakland. you have a to protest and freedom of speech and voice your opinion and discontent. you do not have a right to tear this city up. >> most of 152 people arrested of failing to disburse and vandalism. >> for several hours, police closed oakland's fruitvale bart station where grant was shot. this is out of concern that protestors might head there but no crowds showed up and the station was reopened by 8:30 last night. >> protestors did swarm a transit bus in downtown oakland. sky 7 got this shot as the crowd brought the bus to a standstill as they left the plaza. lisa amin gulezian shows us how

the demonstration turned ugly when the demonstrators went on the move. >> reporter: hundreds started to march what was a peaceful rally honoring oscar grant. the crowd grew quickly as they blocked the intersection. as they moved south, people jumped on to cars and tore down a fence. the anger seemed to grow as the crowd went to east 10th street. that is where they met a massive police presence. police in riot gear approached the crowd and hemmed their line. the group retreated but only after destroying a chain link fence and disappearing through a lot. >> some say it was easy to get

caught up in the moving crowd and some protestors and tensions changed. >> they were jumping on cars. >> reporter: that is when you decided what? >> to back off. >> this is what rally organizers didn't want. they hope the supporters would have a chance to speak freely. the outrage of johannes mehserle sentencing and words. >> we need to unify and for oscar grant family we need some way to as a city and neighborhood as just unite. >> it wasn't right. i feel like he should have gotten more time. i felt like justice wasn't served. >> some of those are backing a movement, a positive one, it's called shut the city down. a massive group in oakland and

they want to talk about it next week. lisa amin gulezian, "abc 7 news." >> his sentence is not final. there may be appeals from both sides of the case. laura anthony was in the los angeles courtroom when the judge announced the sentence. she shows immediate reaction afterwards. >> oscar grant uncle says he wasn't surprised that he received two years for shooting his nephew but he was greatly disappointed. he compared to it michael vick. >> if on man compares to prison for killing a dog and gets four years, of course, two years is not enough. >> an emotional hearing, the judge signaled that he had serious concerns about a gun. they dismissed it for lack of evidence. >> it's been a sad course of

affairs that this young man who never intended to shoot oscar grant to be treated the way he has been treated. >> they thought mehserle clearly didn't mean to shoot grant of shock and surprise after the gun went off. they called one called weapons confusion. grant's mother begged the judge showing the maximum sentence. mehserle's turn, he stood facing the judge, he cried and i will never question the love shown by the family. i am truly took a son, a father and brother, a uncle. >> now i don't know if it's contrived. >> i have never understood how in the world the grant family continues to insist that he is not remorseful and he has not

expressed his remorse. >> his attorney is filing appeals for the involuntary manslaughter conviction. but they indicated they will appeal. a parolee is under arrest for robbing and killing a san francisco socialite. kathleen horan was found dead last saturday. police believe the suspect 43-year-old gary holland posed as a utility worker to get into her apartment. yesterday, they distributed this sketch of a man they wanted to interview. an officer approached him in sutro heights park because he looked like he needed help. >> the more we inquired and more we talked with the person, the more suggested that it was more

here than just a person laying down in the park. >> holland was released in prison in april after serving 11 years for attempted murder in fresno county. police say they have other pieces of evidence that they can't discuss right now. >> coming up next, tuesday's election is over but a surprising reversal in mayors al election. and race for attorney general is too close to call. and there has been an arrest in húhúhúhúhúhúgtoñ

california's next attorney general. as of yesterday, pamela harris was trailing los angeles republican by 16,000 votes with more than two million provisional ballots still to be counted. the margin is to be the tightest since 2002 when steve wesley balloted tom mcclintock with subpoena,000 votes and in oakland there appears to be an upset. the first results of rank choice voting. they show oakland city councilmember gene kwan has pulled ahead and former state senate president peratta had less. in the rank choice system, officials voters second and third choices until one candidate reaches at least until 50%. >> there a break for thousands

of families for losing the state subsidized day care they rely on. an alameda court superior judge ordered to extend services. he scheduled a hearing on the issue on november 29th. child care advocates say it didn't notify families they might be eligible for other subsidized child care programs. >> one of two suspects stealing this pooch is under arrest but the dog remains missing. she was walking her dog last saturday when two men grabbed the dog and purse and took off. they say the dog may have been sold to somebody in the stockton area. if you are looking for sunshine, you'll get it for one more day. >> and in part of the bay area because we are looking at the clouds in the south bay. a couple of systems headed our

benito a slight chance of showers. elsewhere, partly cloudy conditions and a pretty decent day today, staying dry as this area of low pressure is a weak one and the main factor with this will be the higher clouds that are going to overspread much of the bay. this is the stronger system. it's still off shore. cold front slams on through tomorrow. beginning in the north bay, this time tomorrow, definitely wet all across the bay area but by 7:00, parts of san francisco with the south bay still dry but the frontal passage will take place throughout the afternoon. late morning, everyone gets wet and by 3:00 in the afternoon, conditions will dry out, even partly cloudy skies but not before we see anywhere between three to four hours of pretty good rain. 1-2 inches in the north bay. 3/4 in the santa cruz mountains

lesser amounts in the coastal hills. east bay hills with the least amount in the south bay. you have a slight chance today. >> cold storm will let the snow levels to start out high, 7:00 in the morning to 6:00 monday morning. then lowered about 6,000 feet. gusty winds, eight to ten inches of snow. partly cloudy around the bay. 65 in oakland, 69 san jose with low 70s where you see more sun probably out in the valleys and 65 watsonville. school in monterey because of a cloud cover and slow burnoff of the fog there. we'll look for the rain to begin early tomorrow while you are sleeping. it will exit but it will be a wet afternoon. >> it will be a wet morning and raiders game look for the showers early.

oakland bart station last year. mehserle got two years but minus time served for his manslaughter conviction. a gun enhancement that could have given him ten years was dismissed. there was no evidence that he intended to shoot grant. >> they were consistent with the evidence. those rulings were absolutely appropriate and district attorney of the alameda county should be ashamed itself the way it's conducted the prosecution in this case. >> the judge's decision angered grant's family outside the courthouse where the trial was moved. >> so this case does nothing at all -- it goes to continue the polarization. >> mehserle addressed the court before he was sentenced. he cried and apologized for his actions. with time served he will likely

serve seven months in prison. the judge's decision sparked protests. more than 150 were arrested and charged with vandalism and unlawful assembly. grammy award singer ludicrous made an appearance. he is part of a campaign called get schooled and education reporter lyanne melendez explains the idea is to inspire kids to graduate and go on to college. >> students at marshal high were energized by calloway. he came with a message. >> what do you want to be when you get out of school? who said a lawyer? >> san francisco was one of ten cities visited by a campaign to encourage students to go on to college but it's not their teachers telling them this.

understand that. >> if they did it, so can i. lyanne melendez, "abc 7 news." this morning president obama has announced trade deals with india worth ten billion dollars and that is expected to create 54,000 u.s. jobs. the president and mrs. obama stopped in mumbai. they unveiled new export rules to ease trade restrictions with india. the trade deals include the purchase of 33 boeing jets. indian military is planning to buy aircraft engines from general electric. both deals were in the works but the white house says, the president sealed the deal with this stop.

retailers are worried about lackluster shopping season so they are starting early. black friday came early this year. >> black friday sales have arrived three weeks early this year taking some shoppers by surprise. >> i really don't like it. i wish one season would pass before starting the next. >> they are seizing every opportunity to grab those shopping dollars early. >> and some consumers are ready to respond. gap stores gave away 10,000 pair of jeans. promotion you log on and line up. >> facebook event, you get free pair of gap jeans. >> retailers say social media is the newest trend to boost foot

about 1500 feet and above we're looking at sun but the clouds are really prevalent along the south bay. also monterey coast where we could see showers today. two weather systems, a weak one and much stronger one. 56 in oakland, 50 along the coast. half moon bay as well as novato with upper 50s with more cloud cover, mountain view and san jose. we will be looking at a partly cloudy sky and sunrise earlier as we fall back, an extra hour of sleep. but the afternoon will be partly cloudy. due to this cold system, area of low pressure is around the gulf of alaska. here is the cold front but another weak system is off of southern california coast. live 7 doppler hd is big sur

coast and showers and pushing north toward gilroy and the san jose area. so the rotation may allow shower activity in the south bay. it will be light and brief. overall the low pressure center bringing the higher clouds, to the east bay and north bay. it's this system that we're waiting on to bring over an inch of rain in the north bay valleys. you notice the chain of moisture heading back into the pacific. here the time line, early tomorrow morning, 7:00, everyone north getting wet. berkeley and concord and a little further south across the east bay, wet weather and front comes marching to the south, moderate rain all across the bay and 2:00, we're behind it and breezy winds. it does mean we'll see a rainy

>> chase will meet with bay area housing advocates to slow the tide of foreclosures. a distressed bay area homeowner spoke at that meeting to tell his story. chase broke his promise to meet and the bank is now taking the man's home. jose vega and his wife begin the painful task of packing up their belongings. two-year struggle to save his home from foreclosure is now over. >> right now, it's sad but there is always a sense of relief that the nightmare will soon be over. >> the hardest thing is the ordeal has taken on his family. a year ago the stress nearly tore his marriage apart and last week, when the packing boxes arrived it hit his ten-year-old son. >> he just broke down.
