[ male announcer ] wells fargo. with you when it's time to save. ♪ >> alan: good evening. moen more fall yut from the johannes mehserle sentencing tonight. the supporters of oscar grant spent the evening discussing new ways to suppress -- express their outrage of the sentence. >> they're so upset at the june, they're thinking about doing something that would be extremely difficult if not impossible. tossing the judge off the bench. another saturday night strategy session. every week since the oscar grant killing, his family and supporters have gathered at the

baptist church, this time plotting their next move after the johannes mehserle two-year prison sentence. >> we're fighting these charges. we don't accept them. just like we don't accept the decision by the judge to give mehserle a slap on the wrist. >> the judge tossed out a firearm conviction and gave mehserle the minimum prison term after doing he did not intend to kill oscar grant with his service weapon. >> taking a look at the procedures to have a judge removed or reprimanded. >> mehserle's attorney was quick to respond. >> that's laughable. that's my first response, it's laughable, the judge was a very, very thoughtful judge, and he didn't give in to the mobs, and he didn't give in to the threats of intimidation, and all of the nonsense that has characterized

this case. >> grants uncle says if the judge gave a different instruction, the jury might have con viected mehserle for a more serious crime. >> attacked by the judge's mistake, that's a judicial error that should not have happened. >> reporter: themeeting lasted a little more than two hours tonight. afterwards there was only a vague comment about what was to come. >> we're going to be holding another protest. >> reporter: mehserle's attorney plans to appeal the cop vision and -- conviction and will try to get the former officer released on bail. abc-7 news. >> alan: more than 150 people were arrested in last night's demonstration. today, lisa amin gulezian caught up with a few of them and kaneed

-- badged -- examined the damage. >> one by one those arrested walked out of the jail. most charged with unlawful assembly. >> we're guaranteed our rights to assemble. we assemble in protest of the two-year sentence. >> i was surprised just because i thought that we weren't doing anything wrong. we were just marshing down -- marching down the streets. >> reporter: hundreds filled the street after a peaceful recally, but then vandalism followed. cars smashed. windows broken and fences destroyed. near laney college, police in riot gear were rating, a splinter group broke off and headed to 18th street, a massive crackdown occurred when a gun was ripped from an officer's gun belt.

>> you have a right to protest and freedom of speech and voice your opinion and discontent. you do not have a right to tear the city up. >> reporter: those who live on fifth avenue couldn't agree more. >> they pass my and they see any car, and the poke the window car completely. they hurt a lot of innocent people. >> reporter: police say more arrests and charges may come. they're reviewing videotape and photos of the vandals. investigators want to track those people down. in oakland, lisa amin gulezian, abc-7 news. >> alan: a strong cold front is just offshore tonight, taking aim at northern california. leigh glaser is tracking the front. >> leigh: clearly you can see the rain bands already starting to feed in along the north coast. crescent city, reporting very heavy around, and winds at 26-miles-an-hour from the south. so not only quite a bit of rain

and also quite a bit of wind. already starting to move into sonoma county. ukiah reporting lane -- rain. overnight, some of this rain could be heavy at times. we'll take an extended look at the forecast and see just how long this frontal system will be with us. >> alan: the voters of san francisco have spoken, but the fight of the sit-lie ordinary naps is far from over. it makes it illegal to sit or lie on the sidewalk from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. what's next? >> reporter: sit-lie is the new prop 8. voters have said one thing, but opponents want to take it to court and see if a june -- judge has something else to say. the sit-lie law isn't in effect but residents and business

owners are already noticing fewer homeless people on the sidewalk. >> i heard from the mailmap, he is not climbing over people to go to the doors, and seeing them moving away from the businesses and stores and going towards side streets. it's making sidewalks better for people. >> reporter: opponents of the law say this fight isn't over. >> we're going to bring a legal challenge against this. we're looking at options. >> reporter: supporters of measure l say they're tired of aggressive pan-handlers who sit all day and harass people. but opponents believe they have a constitutional right to be there. >> when people's rights you get trampled on, you don't walk away you keep on fighting. >> reporter: the district attorney's office believes the law will hold up, pointing out seattle's ordinance was taken to court. >> seattle's laws are most similar to the law just approved by the voters here in san francisco. and that challenge as well was

overcome by the city, and the law was actually implemented. >> reporter: employees at the snowboarding on haight street aren't worried. >> if they want to challenge it, that's their thing. overall we're going to see a big impact for the civil sidewalks and it's going to work. >> reporter: police said they will use discretion and won't be arresting children with lemonade stands. opponents say that's why they're challenging it. it's not fair to target the homeless. >> laws are supposed to apply uniformly. so if you want to use a law against certain people, it's not about the sitting, it's something else. >> reporter: the law is expected to take effect in jang but just like prop 8, opponents say the fight over sit-lie could last for years. >> alan: a remarkable story of survival in the north bay tonight. it happened this afternoon at the sonoma sky park airport just

south of sonoma. emergency dispatchers say it appears a single-engine plane took off and crashed. >> the condition of the pilots was good, other than lacerations around his face and head. he is in good condition and good spirits. >> alan: witnesses say the plane didn't seem like it had enough power during takeoff. the sky park manager says the plane was not a local one and had the words iair design" on it. >> oakland police are investigating a double-homicide, teenager and a young adult, both male, were found dead inside this car this afternoon. police only say the young men were both shot to death. their bodies were discovered in the car around 3:30 in front of the acorn tower important -- apartment building. no suspects have been arrested. tonight there are still no winners in the race for state

attorney general. the leader has changed. republican steve coolis now ahead by 22,000 votes. just yesterday, san francisco democrat carmella was ahead by 16,000 votes, state officials are still counting 2 million provisional and absentee ballots. >> there's a new leader in the oakland mayor race. quan jumped ahead in the latest tally of votes. the final is expect on monday. sonoma marin area rapid transit director voted to cut a north bay train route by 30 miles. the project was supposed to take passengers from cloverdale to los angeleslash -- lark spur is shorten. the director said is was important to get the project moving. it was funded in 2008 with a

though it's a important trip, the white house is eager to point out its importance to the is economy. the president announced wednesday deals with india worth billions of dollars. ann compton is traveling with the president. >> reporter: days after american voters gave democrats what even he callses a shellacking, president obama is on a mission to create jobs back home. he landed first in india, and the ceo of boipg was waiting with news that the president was able to trumpet at a business summit. india is going buy 40 planes and a dozen other companies are sealing contracts-too. >> the goods we sell in this country support tens of thousands of manufacturing jobs across the united states, from california and washington to pennsylvania and florida. >> reporter: there is a real effort to connect every step he takes to interest at home. at a museum honoring gandhi, it

automatic hike in the federal unemployment taxes of $21 a year for every worker. san francisco is hosting its annual veterans day parade tomorrow morning. the parade starts at second and market streets and ends at city hall. this year's event includes a special commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the start of the korean war. most other bay area cities will be holding their parades on thursday. on to leigh glaser. it's a pretty big storm out there. >> leigh: it will be very wet for that parade tomorrow as well. we do have a pretty strong cold front moving in along the north coast, and the clouds and the rain from the north bay to the south bay. overnight you can see from the roof top cam, the rain has not arrived yet in san francisco, but the winds are picking up. we are starting to see the signs of the frontal system getting

closer to us. live doppler 7 hd picking up heavy rainfall up toward crease sent city and eureka. you can get a sense of rain activity. and all of this is sweeping from north to south. so we will continue to see this increase in the overnight hours. here's a look at current readings, mid-to-upper 50s, and tonight, don't forget, before you good to sleep, it is the night we set our clocks back one hour. we return to pacific standard time tomorrow morning at 2:00 a.m. increasing rain overnight. deal with morning rain. could be heavy, and this will be a fast-moving cold front. overnight temperatures, mid-to-upper 50s. and you can get a sense of the cold front stretching well out towards the west. very impressive this time of

year, and it will spread rain across the entire bay area. here's the timeline. 11:00 tonight, overnight hours, 4:00, 5:00, 6:00, the yellow indicating the heavy rain in the north bay, by 10:00, 11:00, the actual frontal band will get close to san francisco, and as this thing moves through by the afternoon hours we'll be on the back side and we'll see breaks in the overcast and partial clearing. rainfall potential, one to two inches, pretty in punch for the north bay. lesser amounts towards the peninsula. and for those of you who may be heading to the raiders game tomorrow, maybe the first half will be on the damp side as the frontal band will be sleeping through. so prepare for wet weather. the second half you may get a few breaks in the overcast. in the high country, above
