from the moment william's engagement to kate middleton was announced by royal tweet, the spotlight on the happy couple has been almost blinding. >> did you get down on one knee? >> that's going to stay a secret, peter. >> reporter: in their first press conference as fiancees, the couple shared their obvious joy with the world. >> he's very, very supportive of me, through the good times and the bad. >> reporter: but all eyes were not just on them. >> as you may recognize, now, my mother's engagement ring. so, of course, it's very special to me. it's my way of making sure my mother didn't miss out on the day. and the excitement, and the fact that we're going to spend the rest of our lives together. >> reporter: after eight years of friendship and dating, the couple sealed the deal in kenya last month. >> we're like little ducks. very calm on the surface. but little feet going on under water. it's really exciting. we've been talking about it for a long time.

for us, it's a real relief. and it's nice to tell everybody. >> reporter: in their first-ever sitdown interview together, the future king and queen of england intimately shared some surprisingly candid details. >> i turned bright red. and i was shy about meeting you. it did take us a bit of time to get to know each other. and we did become very close friends from quite early on. >> it's easy to be with each other. it's fun. and i'm obviously extremely funny. and she loves that. it's good. >> you say for yourself. >> reporter: one thing they didn't quite see eye-to-eye on, their famous breakup. >> it was sort of a space. and a bit of things like that. it seemed to work out for the better. >> at the time, i wasn't very happy about it. but actually, it made me a stronger person. you find out things about yourself that maybe hadn't realized. or i think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you're younger. and i really valued that time.

for me, as well. though i didn't think it at the time. >> reporter: they even revealed an almost surreal scene. a prince making a romantic dinner for two. >> when i was trying to impress kate, i was trying to make amazing, fancy dinners. all that would happen, is something would catch on fire. and she would be in the background, trying to help, basically taking control of the situation. >> reporter: kate's soon to be monarch-in-laws said to be excited to welcome her to the family. and prince charles, understated but joyed. >> very excited. they've been practicing long enough. >> i am excited. he is very, very welcoming. and very friendly. >> reporter: but she does regret missing the chance of knowing princess diana. >> i would love to have met her. and she is an inspirational woman to look up to. >> reporter: with the engagement now official and the wedding on track, speculation is soaring. when will prince william and

kate produce an heir? >> i think we'll take it one step at a time. we'll get over the marriage first. and then, look at the kids. obviously, we want a family. we'll have to start thinking about that. she's excited. and we're looking forward to spending our lives together. >> reporter: reminding the world of just how close the royal brothers are, prince harry was the first to congratulate his brother. saying, delighted that my brother popped the question. now i get the sister i always wanted. as for the sister, the 18-carat sapphire ring didn't need to be sized. >> thanks, bianna. joining us now, the british journalist who got the first and only interview with the newly-minted royal couple. tom bradby from itv. congratulations. tom, this is the get of the year. how did you land it? >> good question. i guess i've known them a pretty long time. i cover politics here now. but i was a royal correspondent

a million years ago. i got to know william pretty well at that time. and remained friends with him, and more recently kate since. it was one of those things. they want to do an interview. but kate was very nervous. and they weren't sure whether to do it. i guess the fact it was with me, hopefully, sort of got them comfortable and relaxed enough to actually be prepared to go through with it. that was the idea. pretty terrifying, i have to say, to do. it's going to be watched by millions of people. but one that might be watched in 20 years. we'll look at, god, remember that terrible interview, how stiff they were. >> i was going to ask you about that. whether you were nervous. you were right, the tension in the room, as we watched over here in the states, was pretty palpable, right up until the end, when there was a remarkably human moment at the end. i want to show everyone. >> well done. >> and breathe. >> all the tension seemed to go out of the room at that moment. >> i've spent half an hour up there, just chatting the three of us, before we came down. i know them relatively well, as i said.

and we weren't talking really seriously about the interview. we talked about that. but there was a lot of laughing and joking and relaxing. of course, when you go into an interview, the stakes are relatively high. the last thing anyone wanted was the kind of moment that his mother and father had. you remember that famous comment, whatever love is. that really haunted them. by the end of the day, your happy day. and i was trying to avoid mucking it up. >> you did the right thing, not turning it into a rottweiler. you mentioned the moment between prince charles and lady diana in their first interview. i want to remind our viewers about it and show them that, as well. >> and, i suppose, in love. >> of course. >> whatever in love means. >> did you not ask the question because the answer is obvious? >> yes. i think that's basically true. i mean, you can say lots of things about william and kate. they've known each other a long time. they're very much in love. i think everyone can see that. i didn't want to go down in history about being the reporter that asked an unbelievably stupid question, which i think it would have been.

there was no need for it. i wanted it to be more subtle than that. >> i was struck by a candid moment in the interview. when william was talking about one of the reasons he waited so long was he wanted to give kate a chance to feel what life was like in the fish bowl and to back out if she wanted to. was he testing her over this long period of time? >> i think he was a bit. william is a very, very thoughtful, sober, serious guy. and in many ways, he's emotionally, still, i think wounded by a lot that's happened in the past. he's determined to live his life exactly the way he wants to live it. you know, i don't make predictions. but i am prepared to bet great deal of money now that they will never get divorced. even if they are unhappy, they won't get divorced. like their grandparents, they are sticking this through thick and thin. there was an interesting line. the past is the past. and i want to learn the lessons from it. the future will be different. >> i completely agree. that was also important.

it's clear that he does want to learn those lessons. finally, you talk about how you've known kate and william for a fair amount of time. for an american audience, what would they be most surprised to learn about kate? >> i think how nice she is. i don't know what your view of the royal family is. i think you just view them as wow, they're just nice. they're ordinary. they're very charming. i would use words -- what would i use to describe kate? i would say she's very kind. she's very loyal. i would say, she's not very showy. she's actually not like diana. i think the comparison is pretty unhelpful there. and i think people will find her a straightforward, down-to-earth, nice, girl. >> they seemed like a nice couple yesterday. congratulations on a terrific interview. >> thank you. thank you, george. >> seems like a nice guy, too. >> i know. it was so relaxing watching them talk like that. and prince william, you saw his attention to some degree.

so with his fiance. not so with her parents. michael and carole middleton run a mail-order business in a converted farm close to their home in buckleberry parish. a village of just 2,000 people. you know who else is there today? lama hasan. she is there and has more for us. good morning, lama. >> reporter: good morning, to you, robin. i'm standing right outside kate middleton's family home. this is where she grew up. and down the road is where the british prime minister comes from. this is a small and sleepy village. about 2,000 people live here. but today, it is buzzing. everyone is talking about one thing. the royal engagement. the future queen has put this tiny village on the map. and everyone here is over the moon, from the locals -- what do you make of the announcement? >> absolute magic. it's been a long time in the waiting. in the coming. good luck to them. >> reporter: to her parents, of course. >> as you know, catherine and prince william have been going out together for quite a number of years, which is great for us. we got to know william really

well. we all think he's wonderful. and we're extremely fond of him. >> reporter: kate has grown up in a close-knit family, with her parents, brother and sister. >> she has a very, very close family. and i get on really well with them. i'm lucky they've been so supportive. mike and carole have been, you know, really sort of loving and caring and really fun. and i've been really welcoming towards me. i felt like a real part of the family. >> reporter: meeting the royal family on several occasions. here, at prince william's sandhurst graduation. and snapped here while they learned to shoot at the queen's scottish estate. living in this modest five-bedroom house on the british countryside. it's a far cry from the surroundings kate will become accustomed to. >> some are speculating that the middletons will join the royal family. that will not be the case. kate is joining the royal family. they're perfectly civil to the in-laws. but they don't treat them as royals. >> reporter: they may not be blue-blooded.

but her parents run an online supply company. selling games and toys for kids' parties. a company that has made millions of dollars. and everyone we've spoken with has described the middletons as low-key and ordinary family. one that is very well-respected in the community here. >> all right, lama. thank you so much for that report. from girl next door to palace princess, kate middleton has had time to get accustomed to life in the public eye. but things are about to change in a big way for the woman that would-be queen. for more, we're joined on that by experts on the royal couple. katie nicholl joins us live from london. you've been reporting a lot on this. what's the latest you're hearing about the wedding? when? where? all the good stuff. >> reporter: you will remember i was on not so long ago saying

it was going to be a 2011 wedding. and sure enough, it is. it's a poignant year as we remember diana. there's a lot of speculation that it is going to be a summer wedding. but i think it was very telling that in the announcement that was put out that it could be a spring wedding. and royal engagements are short. i wouldn't rule out to see something as early as march or april. and june is the month that's being bandied around because that's when prince william turns 29. and you remember, he said he would get married when he was 28, maybe 30. 29, that birthday date could be significant. but don't rule out an early wedding than the summer. >> i like how you read the tea lives like that. it could be possibly earlier than the summer. you were there at the press conference yesterday. and just want to get your impressions. >> yes. >> i know you had a moment to chat with the couple briefly after the press conference. >> well, it was wonderful because, as you know, i've written this book, largely based on my expeer yenss of the couple

at nightclubs and polo matches. it was wonderful to see them in the palace. this was so significant for us over in britain. up until now, we had never heard kate middleton speak, let alone give a press conference. it was fascinating to watch them. their body chemistry was very warm. kate admitted she had butterflies. she was obviously very nervous. but william steered her around. and in that interview, he's going to be a great teacher. he's going to give her the support that she needs. >> we could see her exhale when she did the one-on-one interview with tom. kind of like, it's finally over with. >> relief. and they had relief on their faces, both of them, yesterday. that was huge. that is out now. they kept it secret, you know, for a long time. it must have been a great pressure they were under. >> they did brilliantly. tell us leading up to the engagement, katie, the family members that were notified ahead of time. >> that's interesting. actually, no one knew about this engagement announcement except for william, kate and kate's father, michael. even her mother wasn't aware of it. the prince of wales was only informed a couple of hours before prince william went public with this announcement.

it gave the prince of wales time to make a statement and the queen. but this was done last-minute. it's very much prince william's style. as he said to me yesterday, he likes to keep us on our toes. >> he does a good job of that. and good for him for doing that. i love hearing about how he called his dear brother, harry, and said you're going to have a sister. and he said he always wanted a sister. what does this mean for prince harry going forward, katie? >> well, everyone's asking me is prince harry going to be next? is the spotlight on him next? he's single at the moment. he's back in touch with chelsy. i think we're going to see him really support william and kate. they are very close. he's been a friend to kate. when he split up with chelsy, it was kate on the phone with him. i think a great friendship. >> i think that's the case. katie nicholl, thank you for your insight and the latest. we'll be talking to you in the months ahead. have a good day. >> robin, thanks. another developing story in britain this morning. nothing to do with the royals. this one is critical to the global economy. this morning, the british government offered to help ireland dig out from its debt crisis.

remember, yesterday, the irish government refused a bailout from the european union. there's growing concern that ireland cannot pay its bills. that would trigger another crisis around the world. experts believe the greek crisis earlier this year is one of the reasons our economy isn't stronger this year. there's stunning and sad news out of hollywood. one of the prominent publicists to the stars, ronni chasen, was murdered. shot behind the wheel of her mercedes in beverly hills. mike von fremd is in beverly hills. with the latest details. mike, we know it happened early tuesday morning, as chasen was driving home from the new cher movie, "burlesque." >> reporter: that's right, george. this is the spot she crashed her car. as you said, ronni chasen was a powerhouse publicist. and police are baffled. the hollywood community is horrified that one of its own was apparently gunned down in the streets, in what is supposed to be the safe, affluent community of beverly hills.

the invitation-only premiere of the movie "burlesque," was 64-year-old ronni chasen's last walk down the red carpet. that's her in the black jacket. she was one of hollywood's elite. famous for promoting movies and actors, such as morgan freeman in "driving miss daisy." michael douglas in "wall street 2." and "slumdog millionaire." as she was driving home after the premiere and party, her black mercedes was found smashed into a light pole. five bullet wounds in her chest. chasen was rushed to the hospital, where she died in less than an hour. >> we don't have crimes like this in the city of beverly hills. it is a surprise to us. we have numerous investigators at the scene. trying to piece this thing together. we don't have a motive at the time. we don't have a suspect information. >> reporter: employees say chasen called the office from her cell phone at 12:22 a.m., six minutes before she was shot.

leaving a to-do list for the following day on an answering machine. police are sifting through the computers chasen kept in her office. fellow publicist, michael levine, is calling on all of hollywood, to raise $25,000 to help bring the attacker to justice. >> it is like losing a family member. and she had a particularly close relationship. she was also a close friend to so many clients. she had a very strong -- this was her entire life. >> reporter: now, ronni chasen seems to be one of the few here who had virtually no enemies. her competitors have rallied to tell everyone she was a class act, which makes this tragedy even more painful and mysterious. george? >> it sure is, mike. a real head-scratcher. okay, thanks very much. let's go to sam with the weather. >> hey, george. we're going to start with these 83 severe weather reports, from the carolinas over to maine overnight. the storms are racing. this is out of trenton. the winds 55 miles per hour, at

the other, a confident 28-year-old college grad and one-time professional. both wore blue on their engagement day. kate's high fashion. diana's less so. and their appearance as husband and wife-to-be, william and kate, nine years in the relationship. rift with romance and humor. >> a true romantic. >> it's easy to be with each other. it's fun. and i'm also extremely funny. and she loves that. it's good. >> speak for yourself. >> but diana and charles, struggled. >> so, are you in love? >> of course. >> what does in love mean? >> the range of someone at 19, to make the transition? >> it is rough. i'll know in six months. next charles and i can't go. >> i don't know what i'm sort of -- i don't know, the ropes.

officially announced diana's pregnancy with william less than five months after their wedding day. so, george and robin, it is not a question they can avoid for long. >> all right, jim. thank you very much. and back with us again this morning is tina brown. she knows all things royal. she wrote a book on william's mother, "the diana chronicles." and "the daily beast." and "newsweek." you had a busy day yesterday. we heard jim talking about the prospects of a baby. and you talked about it differently. saying how important it is soon. >> yes, indeed. breeding up a storm is what she has to do. there are twins in kate's pedigree. there are twins back there in that background of hers. she's so efficient, she might deliver the heir and the spare at once. >> the first one out is the heir? >> whoever gets there by one second. that would be a really nice, you know, royal dynamic, to see that being fought out in the circular. >> you're so interesting on the

differences between diana and kate. you write your article in "the daily beast" this morning talking about it. and you say that kate is not a wounded soul. >> she's not a wounded soul. people are deceived by prince william's debonair, urbane pu persona. he's been through hell. all the years he can remember are terrible tears. he is a wounded man. kate is not. kate is solid. she is together. she is organized. and you saw a flash of that dynamic when he said in the interview, he was a terrible cook and burns all the food. and fortunately, she always moves in and takes over. as he put it. >> and the wishes moment, as well. talking about the poster on his wall. >> it was great. you see she is a very solid girl. a little older than william. and she shows a kind of solidarity that he desperately needs.

>> and you wrote brilliantly about how she was put through the paces a little bit in this long courtship, to prepare her for this moment. >> almost like william has a military, sort of training that she did. they were so afraid, the royal family, of another diana. they kept putting it off. they kept putting it off. the queen wanted to know for sure. it will be charles between. but she will be the queen of england. she has to be able to do it. you can't get that wrong. and they got it wrong before. and for 20 years, 30 years, really, they've seen that cage being rattled and rattled by the spirit of a poltergeist that's diana. >> you said they got it wrong, tina. what do you mean by that? princess diana was who she was. >> i'm talking in their terms. in the public terms, they got it so right, it didn't go well for the royals. it was an unhappy marriage. the public worshiped diana. personally, it didn't work at

all. >> i was talking to tom bradby in our last half hour. he did the interview. and he all but guarantees they will never get divorced. and he thinks they talked about that before getting engaged. >> i would be astounded if they get divorced. kate has shown something really key. she has never embarrassed william. she's never embarrassed the royal family. when you think about embarrassing, the royal family has been to each other. with fergie's antics and stuff happening with people being taped. all of the things that's happened in the last 20 or 30 years. diana's huge, kind of -- the drama it became for the royal family. kate's not going to do that. she understands, almost by being nonaristocratic, by being nonroyal, she's had to work harder for the job. she was able to do the stuff that really, people in a sense, with more devil-may-care backgrounds, won't do. she's following the cloth in that regard. >> you ended your piece today by

talking about how prince william, he gets it. and realizes that people -- the palace was trying, as you wrote, forget diana and what happened. and this was his way of bringing her back in the forefront, to have the wedding in 2011. >> he is a very determined guy. everyone i know who knows william, says he's stubborn and determined. he was determined to own this date. if there was leaking, he would change the date. he wanted this to be his day, his thing. you know, he wanted -- he's not going to have diana erased. he wants to really bring her back. but the royals, the impulse has been no memories of diana. we don't want any of that. that's all done. there's too much trouble here. the monarchy rattled. william will sort of rehab diana's role inside the royal family, as opposed to being the people's princess, which is what we see and love. >> tina brown, thanks very much. >> thank you. let's go to juju and the

drug administration, which could act to ban the drinks. andrea canning talks to one family in florida who says four loko killed their son. good morning, andrea. >> reporter: the new developments is what the family has been fighting for. police say dozens of students have been sent to the hospital from these drinks. but this family's case is unique. they're suing the makers of four loko, claiming the alcohol and caffeine combination caused their son, a sophomore at florida state, to become so manic and erratic, he accidentally shot himself. it's the one-two punch hitting college campuses everywhere. >> we just started feeling really bad. just really sick. >> reporter: four states have banned them. and new york senator chuck schumer's office reports the fda is set to rule they are unsafe. and will effectively be banned across the country. the makers of four loko maintain their product is safe. but tells abc news, they are removing the caffeine, quote, after trying to unsuccessfully navigate a politically-charged

and difficult regulatory environment at both the state and local levels. it's a bittersweet victory for joe and vicki keiran. >> i miss him more and more every day. i wish he would e-mail me. i wish he would call me. i wish he was coming home for thanksgiving. >> reporter: an september 17th, they claim the actions of their son, jason, were completely out of character. his roommates say after partying for 30 hours straight, wired on caffeine and drunk from the alcohol, he accidentally shot himself in the head. explain why you started looking into things on your own. >> this word was coming in the conversation with the different roommates called four loko. i started finding these bizarre stories of kids all over the country that had drank this and then started this crazy behavior. >> reporter: they say jason, who was under age, drank at least 3 cans of four loko, the equivalent of 18 light beers and 6 cups of coffee. do you think jason needs to shoulder some of the blame for drinking under age?

70% of how you age is lifestyle. >> ready. go. >> reporter: this year, i started doing yoga. >> take a healing breath in. and a calming breath out. >> i tried to be health-conscious. now that i'm turning 50, it's time to tweak my routine more. i can't stand doing push-ups. we checked in with a trio of experts, to see if they could teach me a thing or two about health and longevity. >> everybody out there is turning 50. you and i this year. it's a nice wake-up call to realize that we control our destiny more than any other generation ever has controlled their destiny. >> reporter: a huge part of controlling one's destiny, making smart food choices. >> when people turn 50, they come into my office saying, hey. hook me up with vitamins. they'll spend all this money doing was these things where, really, the cornerstone, the beginning, the foundation, comes from the food that we eat. you can think of these as your supplements. >> all right. >> and they're cheaper. >> i love that.

give us five, key foods for 50. fiber and omega three in the morning. dark chocolate. broccoli, broccoli sprouts to spruce up the meals. the anti-inflammatory, ginger. and omega 3s to keep you shining and boosting energy. >> reporter: an energy booster was exactly what i needed. my next stop was the courts with martina navratilova. and now, fitness ambassador. >> come on. move those legs. i know you're over 50. but really. oh, good get. >> reporter: my tennis game may not have been a winner. but i still got a prize. my aarp card. >> you're looking fabulous. 50 is the new what? 25? >> reporter: 35. >> 35 is good enough. >> reporter: my tennis lesson was tougher than i expected. i wanted to know if i should

change my game. your workout routine, should it be more distance running? >> i started getting diligent about pullups, situps and ensuring that i wouldn't be frail. >> reporter: how much can you improve your life at the age of 50? >> with the average american that changes their lifestyle at age 50, within three months, within three months, there's measurable differences in their life expectancy. >> love yoga. dr. richard besser is a part of our dream team of experts. and part of the 50 club. >> that's right. >> you talked about it a lot and the things you had to change. let's start with exercise. what do you do? >> it's never too late to start exercise. people get overwhelmed by the thought of beginning. talk to your doctor about how fast and if there's any restrictions. your goal is to do 2 1/2 hours in a week. but you can break that down into ten-minute blocks and build up to that. as mehmet was saying, resistance training becomes important in

terms of building strong bones. >> you talked about, there's certain tests and medical procedures you should go through when you hit that magic age. >> at 50, there's numbers and tests you should pay attention to. the first is your bmi, your body/mass index. pay attention to belly fat. belly fat is a big risk factor. cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, those will put you at risk for diabetes and stroke. you should know those. in addition, there's tests you should be having done. if you haven't done them yet, start now. colon cancer screening for everybody. mom grams to women. and men should be talking to their doctors about prostate cancer screening. >> as you said, talk to your doctor. thanksgiving is a special day you want to share with us. what is that? >> the surgeon general has called that national family history today. you're getting together. you're celebrating. you should gather information. at 50, that's when your family history will catch up with you. >> pass the turkey and tell me
