in the news a blast of wintry weather drops fresh snow in the sierra where chain controls are in effect this morning. lisa argen will have more on the weekend's storm. a local father turns to youtube posting a plea for his long lost children. round one of the weekend's storm system delivers rain and snow to california. bay area got a good drenching but we are not finished yet. they are still having showers out there beginning now we're

beginning more than an inch of rain before the weekend is out. we've got colder temperatures too. the system delivered just what the sierra ski resorts were hoping for. you see it here. fresh snow just in time for the thanksgiving holiday. driving conditions are icy over the mountain passes this morning. right now caltrans has chain controls in effect for the lake tahoe region chains are required on interstate 80 over donner summit, over echo summit and state round 89 in the lake tahoe basin. let's turn to lisa argen what can we expect in places. >> across the east bay so we will be looking at more in the way of wet weather, is a live look from emeryville. we have showers in the north bay and san francisco and we will be looking at heavier rain by 3:00 this afternoon. in fact this is what we're looking at but it's going to the

south and east of us. the heavier showers will rotate in by about 3:00 or 4:00 moss beach and half moon bay looking at wet weather. between about 3:00 and 8:00 tonight heavier rains and a cold air mass. airport delays at 51 minutes right now. here in the bay area a father in walnut creek is making a very personal plea in quite a public way. michael smith has posted a video on youtube beg is his children to contact him. he says they were abducted by his mother more than 13 years ago. more than 2,000 people have watched the video. >> michael smith just sat down in front of a camera and spoke from his heart to his two

children whom he hasn't seen for 13 years. it's been a emotional wreck all week. >> a million emotions ranging from anger to despairer to the what if and every time the phone rings i just don't know. >> he hasn't seen them since they were six and nine years old. he says the mother abducted them during a custody battle. he was first accused of sexual and physical abuse but when all the allegations were cleared he says she took off. >> i want you to know this entire time since december 19 1997 i have loved you and i have never stopped thinking but and i miss you on a daily basis. >> he made this video now because he just heard from the f.b.i. chelsea and zachary have been located and they told investigators they don't want to see their father.

>> i don't know anything beyond that. over the age of 18. privacy laws kicked in. >> he decided to turn to youtube in the hopes his video will go viral and somehow be seen by his kids. he says he doesn't care he hopes his message will reach his kids. >> if they don't call me if they don't make contact i'll be extremely disappointed, but i have no ill will towards them whatsoever. they are victims. >> he hopes the video will be a deterrent from parents abducting their children. >> f.b.i. says smith's ex-wife is a fugitive and wanted for child abduction. >> more than a dozen people in san mateo are homeless this morning after a fire raced their their apartment building. fire investigators are trying to figure out what started the fire on north bay shore drive. six apartments are damaged.

14 tenants are displaced including some in wheelchairs but the red cross has been there assisting. >> a violent car crash devastating result. this happened yesterday leaving several families in the east bay shattered. five teenagers in the car two died, one is barely hanging on two others did survive. lisa amin gulezian has more. >> he was a nice outgoing guy. it's really a big shock. >> students at castro valley high school can't believe what happened when the car jonathan johnson was in crashed into a light pole on ocean avenue in san francisco. johnson and another 18-year-old benjamin powell were thrown from the car and died. a 16-year-old sitting in between them has life-threatening injuries. the two people in the front seat are uninjured an 18-year-old passenger and the driver who is

just 14 years old. >> it's horrible and as a school district try to do everything we can to help the students and families. >> jonathan graduated in june after transferring from tracy. he immediately joined the drama class and made the wrestling team. >> his coach was the first to find out about the crash. he called school administrators who told teachers and then guidelines counselors. >> he was an outstanding student and one of the people not like i've had anyone close to me pass away before. >> police say all three of the boys sitting in the back seat including johnson were not wearing their seat belts. >> this is a tragic event for the families, but there is the potential to save lives if those seat belts had been worn.

>> the driver has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and the father who owned the car is charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. >> turning to economic news a glimmer of improvement for california jobs' picture. 39,000 new jobs were added to california payrolls last month. 5800 of them were in the east bay, 4800 in the south bay and then another 3300 in marin, san francisco and san mateo counties. talk about those jobs, some of those are tech positions google needs to fill 2000 positions. good news from google is traveling fast. they aren't wasting any time in applying for one of the 2,000 job openings. he has been out of work since june with a background of

engineering and project management. >> looking at positions i think i may have some qualification experience to offer. >> the world's dominant search engine eichd a n statement google is aggressively hiring across the board with a focus in sales and engineering. the mountain view company is in facebook and twitter and they announced a 10% pay raise and bonuses for the more than 23,000 employees. for engineers especially the bidding wars are back. this google recruitment video emphasizes a fun working environment. >> we have yoga and pilates. >> and we mentioned the food. >> the development department says engineers are the fastest growing occupation in the san francisco region. ten-year projected job growth is

25-40% depending on expertise. >> we have identified that through surveys, but demand for engineering, it is all over the bay area really. >> as the economy slowly recovers from a recession for him and many others hope that google's hiring announcement has a ripple effect. >> we need more leaders such as google to inject confidence into the market and boost the economy. >> the demand for engineers at google and elsewhere is great for the overall economy. that is because these are good paying jobs but have an effect ask when they spread out whether shopping or remodeling or eating out. >> a south bay company is one of target of insider trading investigation.

"wall street journal" is reporting that global research goldman and sacks they are looking whether they passed along insider information to investors. federal authorities are preparing charges that could involve consultants and investment bankers and analysts from coast to coast. pleasant hills shopping district is under new ownership. they have purchased the 356,000 square foot shopping area. the sales price wasn't released but the deal could be worth more than $70 million. shopping district opened ten years ago and brought new life to pleasant hill. they have a movie theater border books and bed bath and beyond and several restaurants. >> a college student is expected to return to the bay area today after being released from federal lock up. steve lee came with his parents to the u.s. and claims he didn't

know he was in the country illegally. he has been in custody in arizona. ice officials just released him after senator feinstein filed a motion to stop his deportation to peru. >> one time he is getting depositor and another minute we're not sure. >> on conditions of his release he has to report to the immigration office in san francisco. >> a painkiller prescribed to millions of americans is being phased out. up next the concerns that has the fda halting future prescriptions of darvon. plus thousands of free thanksgiving turkeys will be delivered to bay area families this weekend. several major charity efforts

canada. >> we see them in costume and some dancers that have been doing it their whole lives so it's exciting. >> tonight will be devoted to professional dancers. that will heat up a little bit. >> three inches around mount hamilton this morning. snow levels continue to lower to down to about 2500 feet. here is the sierra nevada where a foot has fallen. 18 in truckee and 22 degrees and we're looking at more cold air moving right here into the bay area with high temperatures as much as 20 degrees below the average. look at the cloud cover the drops on the lens and a gray start with anywhere from quarter to afternoon an inch of rain

while you were sleeping from the north bay to the south bay. the clouds definitely look like they are holding more moisture. in fact more cold air yet to come winds will be kicking up as well with breezy southwest winds all throughout the day. get set for a cold and wet start to your weekend. live doppler 7 hd the bulk of the activity now just about to push in the peninsula but we've had scattered showers all throughout the bay area this morning. first stop from napa to american canyon light rain showers. further south from moraga 680 and 980 back towards san francisco daly city and south city the rain has stopped temporarily downtown. and showers off of pescatedero to move in along the coast. this is ahead of the next system. it will bring a half inch of water our way but mount diablo
