♪ in the news this sunday morning, november 28th, u.s. war games with south korea are underway. north korea responds with some artillery fire of its own. a san francisco police chase ends with a crash and one arrest. authorities are looking for a second man believed to have escaped from custody last week. >> good morning.

i'm meteorologist jeff martinez. more rain across the bay area today? your complete forecast in just a few minutes. carolyn. >> thank you, jeff. i'm carolyn tyler. china is proposing to host an emergency meeting in beijing. it's an 11th hour attempt to ease tensions between north korea and south korea. the china offer come on the heels of new reports of artillery fire in north korea as war games get underway in the south. the u.s. and south korea kicked off their military maneuvers on young jong island where an artillery barrage killed four people on tuesday. a sea of fire if its territory is violated. early the north fired its weapons towards the island again. none of the rounds landed. residents were ordered to take cover but that order has since been lifted. here in the bay area police are investigating reports of an

attempted rape in palo alto. that incident occurred early thursday morning but we are just now getting the details. the young victim was walking on almond street. according to investigators, a man pushed her down, pulled down her pants. the victim fought him off and ran toward camino reel where she found her mother. san francisco police arrested one man. they're still looking for a second suspect who escaped from custody earlier this week. police say they spotted the two in a car on 15th street and gave chase. after a short pursuit, the car crashed into another car. one person in that vehicle was hurt. police arrested the driver in the suspect's car. they are still looking for the passenger. they say that is the main suspect. well, you remember the tiger attack of 2007. this weekend we're hearing for the first time from the two surviving victims of that christmas day tiger attack at the san francisco zoo.

the san francisco examiner obtained audio tapes of police interviews conducted just hours after that incident. the brothers have never spoken publicly about what happened. in the interview police asked them over and over again whether they did anything to provoke the animal. abc 7's amy holyfield reports. >> had you done anything to the tigers to tease it or harass it or scare the tigers? >> no. >> can you think of any reason the tigers would want to attack you or your brother on your friend? >> several times in the interview, then 23-year-old dallywall and his 19-year-old brother paul denied doing anything to provoke the tiger. they say tatiana, the tiger, appeared out of nowhere first pouncing on paul and then attacking carlos jr. who was mauled to death. paul eventually got frustrated with the line of questioning from police. >> when you saw the tigers, were

you yelling at them, trying to get their attention? >> they were attacking us. scared. i was running from the tigers. have you ever one attack you? >> no, no, i can't say i have. >> the scariest moment in my life. >> the attorney for the souza family says these traps prove the group did nothing wrong. >> those tapes were taken very near to the time this happened when they hadn't lawyered up as some people might think. but they spoke the truth about what had happened. >> a spokesman for the zoo remains unconvinced. >> these tapes don't really shed any light on this case. people lie to the police all the time. and i think this is another example of it. there were incidents of taunting of tatiana the tiger that ultimately left one young man dead. >> in the interview the brothers are critical how difficult it was to get help and how long it took police and medical workers

to arrive. >> i had to run to the ambulance with my head like this. i run to the ambulance, knocking on their window like help me out, please (bleep). >> paul says before the ambulance arrived, he didn't think he was going to make it. >> i thought i was gonna die and i couldn't believe -- it was like my last breath. >> amy tells us the victims expressed disbelief the tiger was able to get out of its enclosure. the victims found it did not meet national standards. they settled lawsuits with both families agreeing to pay the brothers a total of $900,000 and an undisclosed amount was paid to the family of carlos sousa. the milk mossconey march remembered the leaderless last night at the castro. they came to remember the first openly gay supervisor harvey

milk and the former mayor george mossconey. both were killed over dan white's seat on the board of supervisors. >> every year november 27th the community gathers to commemorate and remember what supervisors harvey milk meant to us across the world. he is our martin luther king. >> this year's march started at the castro muni station and ended at the site of milk's old camera shop on castro between 18th and 19th street. tomorrow the big online shopping day known as cyber monday. but now many retailers trying to figure out how they did black friday. according to the firm shopper track, retail spending rose just three-tenths of a percent to nearly $10.7 billion.

that's still a record for the day. the web research company says online mer channels saw a 16% spike on black friday. paypal reports an increase of about 27% in payment volume compared with last year. and yesterday the emphasis was on neighborhood businesses in what was called small business saturday. here's lisa amin gulezian. >> it's the launch of a nationwide effort to get people out of the malls after black friday and into their neighborhood shops and restaurants. >> it is going to help. it makes people aware they should support their local businesses. >> retailers need the extra boost even though consumers are expected to spend 4% more this holiday than last year, many people are still opting for the big box stores. downtown martinez filled with boutiques and antique stores was not. >> the expectation it was would catch on. i knew once we saw the weather

report it was going to hamper the turnout. >> one of the few bay area cities where small businesses united for this day. several stores are offering special saturday discounts but foot traffic was very light. >> the rain has put a damper on it. but so far it's still early. >> there are shoppers buying into the concept, mostly because of the selection and service small businesses are promoting unique gifts. >> anyone who's been this open, loves this. >> and many are offering free gift wrapping. the hope is the little things might set them apart from major chains and make a difference. >> i guess they're probably more unique and less common sights. you can find more interesting things and handmade things that are sold in low shops that you might not find at a macy's. >> i'd like to support the businesses around here. specialty stores. they have great products.

>> but for some shoppers, they go where the price is right. >> they pass on the savings to the consumer. definitely better. >> i don't think it's much more expensive to come here. >> martinez wants to make this downtown joint effort a tradition. they're hoping small bills saturday catches on and becomes a success at least in the next few years. in martinez, lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. >> well, you might have heard that planned protest against heightened airport security measures fizzled this holiday weekend. but one bay area native stood out. 31-year-old careen tyler wore a black bikini under her coat back to sonoma county for thanksgiving. she went through without any incident. she wanted to draw attention to something making travelers uncomfortable. >> and i think travel should be

the cargo plane missed several apartment buildings and those it did crash into were under construction. the plane was being used to transport humanitarian aid to developing countries. it's the third plane crash in pakistan in less than five months. country singer willie nelson is back on the road again after a brush with the u.s. border patrol. nelson was arrested for marijuana possession at a checkpoint in west texas yesterday. a border patrol officers smelled marijuana on nelson's biodiesel tour bus 80 miles east of el paso. authorities turned up six ounces of pot. he was released after posting a $20,000 bond. his spokeswoman has no comment. advocates of the second amendment retire to bear arms took their campaign to a nation's hamburg he restaurant in pleasant hill this weekend. members of the group called carry-out flashed their unloaded semiautomatics at the hamburger chain. it's part of the national rifle

association's program to arm every american. they were met by supporters of the brady campaign to prevent gun violence. >> educating them about the ability for them to hopefully carry a firearm that's unloaded for purposes of self-defense should they be faced with a violent encounter. >> even though people have a right to their self-defense, i think people and communities can make sensible gun laws. >> the brady campaign has been successful in getting other bay area chains like pete's coffee and california pizza kitchen to adopt a no guns policy in their stores. the cal bears lost to the huskies in their final game at memorial stadium before it gets a $321 million face lift. the 87-year-old stadium sits on the hayward fault and needs to be seismically retrofitted. two-thirds of the stadium will be replaced with a new concrete

undercover agents who then thwarted his plan. abc's rob nelson has the story. >> the tree-lighting in portland went off as planned friday night just as authorities were arresting a 19-year-old former oregon state university student who was plotting to bomb the event. muhammad, muhammad believed he was being helped by other jihadists when he detonated an explosive. he didn't know he was working with undercover agents following him for months. >> this defendant from the very beginning showed a serious determination to commit jihad. >> the event of portland, he parked it where the explosions would inflict the most damage. he thought it was equipped with a bomb but it was a dud rigged by the f.b.i. thousands gathered in the plaza were never in any danger, in fact unaware of the threat until the next day. >> i was shocked. they work next-door, across the street. when i heard it i was like oh,

gosh! yeahs, i was, definitely. >> this reaction from the muslim community. >> we condemn strongly any act of violence, sean act that would target innocent people. >> twice muhammad tried to blow up the van using a cellphone agents gave him. that's when they took him into custody. the somali-born teen has been charged now with attempted use of massive destruction. he's set to appear in court monday. >> two men got away with only mine understand injuries after their small plane crashed just north of sassoon. the cessna went down in a marsh. the cause of the crash is being investigated by the early reports indicate a possible mechanical failure. the two men on board have not yet been identified. police are searching for a man who robbed a pleasant hill bank at gunpoint this weekend. the suspect made off with an undisclosed amount of money from a bank of america branch in the

court yard shopping center. that man approached a teller, presented a note demanding cash and brandished a pistol. he left the scene on foot. police say he did not appear to have a get-away car. the highway patrol says the number of dui arrests in the bay area is up this holiday weekend. so far this year the numbers show 177 arrests compared with 137 last year. and as you see, statewide the trend continues. 975 dui arrests compared to 904 last year. traffic deaths are down with 11 fatalities so far this holiday weekend compared to 18 last year. the numbers reflect the period between 6 p.m. wednesday and 6 a.m. yesterday. the current chp crackdown will continue through tonight. tomorrow is cyber monday but a lot of shoppers skipped the

crowds on black friday giving the online merchants an early boost. the web research company coremetrics say online shoppers spent 12% more than last year with the average ordering rising to $190. online shopping made up between 8 and 10% of holiday shopping. the santa clara-based computer security company has released a list of the top online holiday shopping scams to watch out for. they include offers of free i-pads. these usually end with charges to your cellphone that cost you $10 a week. also the rob scam, send a phony e-mail that appears to be from a friend or family member requesting money. and fake gift card offers that lure you into sharing your personal information. a controversial cover on newsweek magazine is igniting international outrage and call for a boycott of the magazine.

the cover depicts president obama as a hindu god. lisa amin gulezian has bay area reaction. >> this week's issue of newsweek magazine is being met with harsh criticism from hindus. it was on the cover that's causing problems for members of the hindu-american foundation. it shows president obama with six arms standing on one leg but the caption reading god of all things. the imimagine is similar to the hindu god. >> become an issue of contention for many who don't like their symbols being usurped or used for other purposes. >> the god of creation, destruction and grace. each arm represents a different attribute. the president in india recently is shown trying to balance war, peace and the economy. the hindu-american foundation wants newsweek to apologize and explain to readers what the god

symbolizes. but asia taking a more drastic measure. they're demanding the government remove the issue from all the country's news stands. professor of advertising has seen the cover. she says the magazine's editors should have known better. >> i just thought what a dumb thing to do. there were just many ways to express there are many things he is balancing and he -- they could have expressed something about him being in india as well without using this. you could talk about italy without him looking like the pope. >> it's a global magazine and in several countries. time had mixed reactions to this week's cover. >> i wasn't sure if it was supposed to be about hinduism. but looks like he's juggling. >> do you find it offensive. >> yeah. >> you're not bothered by it? >> i know they're trying to make an analogy of some kind. i think the person who did it didn't know what they were

the abc 7 sunday morning news. in the sierra, resorts say they're enjoying the best early season skiing conditions in decades. here's how it looked yesterday at heavenly mountain resort. morning rain turning into snow by the afternoon. skiers and snowboarders have been packing the slopes. all of the major resorts in the lake tahoe area are most of their lifts open. up to 10 feet of snow has already fallen just since last week. and is more on the way? >> yes, possibly. by the latter part of this week, perhaps next weekend could see more snow. but all the rain yesterday equalled a lot of snow in the mountains. as we can see here, a live shot from lake tahoe. beautiful. they saw close to a foot of snow over just the past 24 hours. so there are still chain controls in effect. in fact, you'll need chains or four-wheel drive vehicles to get over the passes i-80 and highway 50. so if you're planning on coming

'tis the season. the rainy season is here. has been a wet one and great news for the mountains and all that but at least dries out for your sunday. >> thanks, jeff. a little more weather news here. last week california citrus growers spent three cold sleepless nights keeping their crops safe from subfreezing temperatures. gone are the smudge pots we remember in the past due to pollution laws. water through the orchards is no longer practical. how new high-tech wind machines are saving the fruit and also saving gross money. >> the citrus crop survived a profitty night. this is what it looked like in fresno county early this

morning. nick hill kept his fruit warm enough using the latest in wind machine technology. >> this hits 29.4 degrees. it will kick the wind machine on. it will idle and start it up. all hydraulic clutch. all works automatically. >> thermometers out in the field tells the machine to turn on when it hits 29.4 degrees and turn off when the orchard is at a safe 32 degrees. the technology doesn't come cheap. each of these wind machines cost $33,000, about ten grand more than the ones that operate manually. but hill says he saves money every night 2 gets cold. >> save anywhere from a third to a half. they do that good of a job of moderating temperatures in the orchard. >> he'll have 27 of these hi-tech wind machines. they'll pay themselves off the next three to five years. priceless reassurance the more sensitive man da rins and lemons

will survive the winter. >> with last night's temperatures lower than the night before, hill and a crew of six people still spent the night wide awake monitoring the machine's temperatures and their crops. it appears everything survived. in fact, the cold weather helped their fruit reach its potential. 30 to 35 degree weather makes for a thicker skin, gives the citrus a nice color and makes the terry stronger. >> puts the tree into a semidormant state so you don't have as much tissue damage. >> the growers are still concerned dry dangerously low temperatures could return before next string's harvest. don't go away. welcome back, everyone. time right now 6:49. this is a live look from heavenly. we were just telling you how the sierra, the resorts there are saying they have the best early season skiing in a long, long time. they have been packed with the skiers and snowboarders. 10 feet of snow since just last week had most of the major resorts in the lake tahoe area. jeff martinez is here this morning filling in for lisa argen. he'll have more of the accu-weather forecast a bit later in the newscast. oakland is set to become the first u.s. city to offer a municipal i.d. card that whether doubling as a full-fledged debit card. the card will be available to

undocumented immigrants and the city's poor. the card helps people without bank accounts to avoid carrying large amounts of cash or paying high fees at check cashing outlets. the attorney general is warning against imitating the kardasian systems. it is not a moral judgment of the reality stars. attorney general rich blumenthal is worried about the mastercard they're promoting. >> keeping up with the kardasians is virtually impossible using this card. the value of the card is swallowed by the fees and charges imposed on young people who use it. and it is marketed actually as a money management teaching tool. >> and so blumenthal has sent a letter to the bank distributing that card insisting that connecticut consumers be well-informed of those fees. for many of us it seems like it wasn't that long ago that we

started using atm's and debit cards. the next step towards a cashless society may already be here. there's a big push now towards mobile money. 7 on your side's michael finney reports. >> it's a busy lunch hour at sprouts café in palo alto. the ingredients the chefs use are fresh and so is the way some customers choose to spend their money. >> it's innovative, quick, fast. >> customers simply tap their mobile phones near a terminal and the money is debited from their paypal account. >> you don't always have cash so this an easy way instead of using a credit card. >> christa is talking about a bling nation. a bling tag is all she needed to get started. >> i think the size of a quarter and just a sticker that goes on your phone and tap on it. >> bling nation hopes to roll its system out nationally in the beginning of next year and could

become the first to do so. other players include square, google, discover, mastercard, american express and visa. the head of visa mobile thinks this is the next big thing. >> mobile is the most ubiquitous technology in the word. 5 billion homes in the market. >> most cite convenience as a primary reason. but initial reluctance from consumers could hold back widespread usage. >> always an initial worry, scam that this is going to fleece me rather than help me but eventually people see the benefit. >> we talked to him before he boarded a flight to phoenix. >> how fast is goes is up in the air. my guess is the key is going to be security. >> both bling nation and visa
