and we'll look for a little more rain coming up this week. >> good sunday morning. it has been a weekend of violence in oakland with at least one person dead and nine others wounded by gunfire in separate incidents. oakland police have arrested one man after a gun battle near city hall plaza late last night. a suspect was taken into custody at the scene and a firearm recovered. a second person was found a short distance away with a gunshot wound and taken to a local hospital in stable condition. that person is under police guard with a decision pending whether an arrest will be made. that shoot-out came just hours after another incident in east oakland that left one person dead and at least three others shot. several blocks of east oakland had to be shut down. shell casings and other evidence littered two blocks of international boulevard between 90th and 92nd avenue. the other three injuries are not life-threatening and they're still trying to figure out a motive there. at least nine people have been shot in the past 48 hours one man killed, two others injured

near mills college on friday night. oakland police are getting constant training how to handle violent situations like those which erupted this weekend without using excessive force. ironically the latest violence coincided with a decision by oakland police to give the public and the media a glimpse of the intensive training they undergo. >> freeze, police! don't move! don't move! >> sergeant chris saunders just shot a virtual robbery suspect to death. >> he disobeyed my command, turned to fire on me. a lethal threat to me so i shot at him. >> this is a situation simulator which trainees go through once a week and staff goes through once a year. scenarios from confronting a suspect to use of lethal force are run through a computer. this is one aspect of use of force training. >> what we include, shoot and no shoot scenarios. force, no force scenarios. tactical communications.

talk this person to surrender. >> what frank hughes just outlined it comes down to use only level of force that is objectively reasonable based on the totality of circumstances at the time. circumstances which officers need to decipher and react to in seconds. for the first time ever the oakland police allowed elected officials, community members and the media to attend a five-hour lecture and training regarding the policy on use of force. vice president clifton cooper said it was an eye-opener. >> sometimes i think the force is excessive. i think the community at times believes that the force is sometimes excessive. and this primarily is the reason why this training and observance of the police training is important. >> mayor elect jean qwan attended the training and wants more of it. >> why we ascertain whether or not our policies are sufficient and clear enough and whether or

not we need to change our policy and/or our training. >> his officers have been criticized for their use of force during the mehserle demonstrations and some shootings. he welcomes this opportunity to also show the media what they see and hear on the street at a crime scene is not always the case. >> we feel that you will benefit better if you know what our officers are trained what their limitations are. >> police chief holds the use of force training sessions twice a year when he was in long beach. they'll become a yearly event here in oakland. in oakland i'm thomas ramon. >> a 15-year-old girl that disappeared early november was found safe in san francisco. she and her accused abductor were located in a lucky coincidence. >> jennifer burlingoff heard about her search for her cousin from afar. they were leading search teams through snow.

hundreds obtained a candlelight vigil while jennifer kept track of it all from san francisco. >> i thought i'm not doing enough, i live too far away. i live too far away i live in san francisco, i'm not up there helping him. >> yet jennifer is the one who found her. she and her boyfriend were leaving the sports basement on bryant street when they looked over at a car parked on division. >> there's a car off to the side with a couple people standing there and we're people watchers. so we were just kind of looking around and mike goes, hey, is that your uncle. i'm like yeah. my gosh, i started shaking. >> the pony tail on the back of his head was really what gave it away. and trench coat, black. right beside him was jean and it just fit the description. >> they watched from a distance until police arrived. mike took pictures of the arrest while jennifer stayed far out of sight. she says the uncle 44-year-old charles burlingoff is estranged from the family but had recently

visited reading. >> he comes up every once in a while to visit his kids. he's been allowed to stay in jake's house and jean's dad's house. and once he found out that there might have been something inappropriate going on, they almost got in a fight and charlie took jean. >> the family thinks he lured jean to go somewhere with him but that she didn't agree to this. >> i don't think she would have left willingly to go somewhere for a month and be hidden and living in a gross ford explorer on the side of division and bryant street. >> police say jennifer was key in identifying them; that jean and charles did not give police their real names. >> she did give a false name. there was some relief but there was some worry and concern on her end. >> for him? >> for him, yes. >> jennifer and mike are celebrating. they believe it was fate that took them shopping at the right

time today. >> i don't know how it worked out the way it did just perfectly. it's just so absurd. i'm the only one who lives here in san francisco. >> jennifer says she believes charles belongs in prison and jean belongs at home with her family who loves her. in san francisco, amy holyfield, abc 7 news. >> now, a man accused of abducting another girl and also bringing her here is undergoing psychiatric testing at the san francisco jail tonight. police from virginia also in town questioning him. 12-year-old britney smith vanished a week ago from roanoke, virginia, where her mother was murdered. jerry isley was spotted with her and was arrested. they're preparing to extradite easily with smith's abduction. also named as a suspect in the murder of britney's mother. >> as far as the murder charge, i think that's something you'll have to talk with the commonwealth attorney on.

>> police say britney and easily were seen panhandling outside a safeway store at ocean beach. a shopper who saw the report about the abduction on television recognized them and called police. police satisfactory came to san francisco after he showed up on a google search as the best place to be homeless. detectives are expected to take britney home once they finish questioning her. an employee at napa state hospital is in serious condition after being attacked by a patient. this is the second attack in four days. >> it's dangerous. and we are losing control. we've lost control. >> those who work at napa state hospital say it's like being in a war zone where staffers are constantsly facing off against patients. on wednesday a custodian was beaten unconscious and this morning a rehabilitation therapist or r. t. was attacked. >> the same person against the custodian was out with the r. t.

the r. t. was beat up by this patient that beat up the custodian the other day. >> boucher is in the napa county jail charged with assault. these two attacks come less than two months after the murder of psychiatric technician donna gross. her accused killer is patient jeff massey. >> we've been on a heightened sense of alertness after what happened to donna. all members are doing their best to remove themselves from a situation that can be potentially fatal or dangerous. >> flowers are placed on the hospital's front lawn as a remindser of the october 23rd strangulation. they'll remind management about the safety concerns they continue to have on the job. hospital management would not speak with us on camera but released this statement. napa state hospital immediately added additional measures for escorting patients about the

grounds. the incident will continue to be investigated by hospital police. employees who want to remain anonymous tell me management's statement is misleading. starting today the ratio to transport a patient is now 2-1 but that means taking staffers from other departments leaving their units unmanned. >> how do you feel about your safety here? >> scared. i'm scared. >> recently staffers were given these new personal alarms to wear at work. the victims were wearing them at the time of the attacks, but it's not clear if they went off. in napa lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. >> san francisco is facing a sudden deadline bid to host the america's cup yacht race. the golden gate yacht club sent a letter saying san francisco will lose the right to host the next america's cup unless an agreement between the city and the yacht club is signed by friday. the club gets to choose the host city for the next race in 2013. the budget subcommittee meets

>> closed captioning brought to you by mancini sleepworld. >> two explosions in central stockholm have left one person dead and two others in the hospital this weekend. police are calling it an act of terrorism. first a car packed with gas canisters exploded near a busy shopping area in the center of the city. shortly after there was a second explosion just up the street, apparently a suicide bomber who

injured two bystanders. while no one claimed responsibility specifically for the blast, the swedish news agency received an e-mail threat minutes before the explosions. that e-mail reportedly referred to swedish troops in afghanistan and a swedish cartoonist who drew a caricature of profit muhammad. richard holbrook is in critical condition this morning after 20 hours of heart surgery. holbrook a special envoy on the afghan war was in a meeting with hillary clinton in washington on friday when he collapsed. the 69 year old holbrook was taken to nearby george washington hospital where he was operated on to fix a tear in his aorta, the large artery that moves blood from the heart. president obama says he and first lady michelle obama are praying for holbrook's recovery. flight delays causing plenty of problems for passengers in the upper midwest. minnesota was almost deserted yesterday. conditions outside were deteriorating and passengers were forced to wait out that

powerful storm. some travelers went back home while others decided to drive to their destinations. 20 inches of snow and also forced minnesota st. paul international airport to close down. no word as to when the airports might reopen. the new york giants were supposed to be flying into minnesota. they got a game against the vikings and they were detoured and spent the night in kansas city. impacting all kinds of things. >> almost every airport along the eastern seaboard with props. just a little bit. right now minneapolis okay but we're looking at other delays around chicagos and back home no delays at sfo. high definition emeryville camera, the fog, it's a little higher deck. that means better visibility and more sunshine today. we'll talk about that coming up. >> all right. congratulations to stanford quarterback andrew luck. he finished second in this year's heisman trophy selection process. coming up next in sports mike shumann shows us who took home

lane changing going to be doing as vehicles head north on the golden gate bridge. a little moisture out there on the bridge as well. gonna get more from lisa argen on all that coming up just a couple minutes. a redwood city man is the proud owner of the first ever nissan leaf to come off the production line. 20,000 people have already ordered the all electric car which is priced for the average consumer. 31-year-old olivia paid a little over $33,000 for this electric car. but wait a minute. there's more. state and federal rebates kick in to bring it down from 33,000 to 20000. he's going to use the car for the 20 mile round trip to his office. the car gets about 100 miles per charge. and electricity doesn't cost all that much. a heck of a deal if you can get your hands on one. lisa argen here to talk about not cars but weather. >> saw a little fog but

visibility has improved. the mist and drizzle. a few changes this morning as we head outside. sfo no delays. and pretty good visibility. and our roof camera that's looking good too. we're talking cloudy skies though. the clearing was slow yesterday in southern marin county. elsewhere some hazy sun warmed up santa rosa to the mid-60s. you know your average high should be in the mid-50s. so it was very mild all around the bay if you got out of the fog. this morning temperatures are in the 50s. 56 mountain view. good morning san jose. 56 for you. it's a cool 46 in half moon bay with some cool numbers out by livermore and the delta. 55 in antioch. our highlights then some areas of fog. slow clearing today except i think around the south bay. you're really going to warm up once again and see temperatures pretty mild in the upper 60s. but elsewhere seeing some sunshine. calling it partly sunny

throughout the afternoon. we got a spare the air day today which means no burning indoors and outdoors. looks like the poorest air quality moderate level is in the south bay today. here's a look at visibility. napa to a quarter mile. 10 miles half moon bay. so kind of a switch there. it was awful yesterday at the coast but things are improving. as a result no dense fog advisory has been issued this morning. in fact we're looking at that deck of clouds lifting a bit helping throughout the morning hours. but the fog moving throughout the central valley and going to sit here around the delta today. some of those numbers not making it quite up into the 60s. look like we'll have clearing elsewhere around the bay today. as a result temperatures a little bit more mild. high pressure still in control. the storm track well to the north. but this too will begin to sink to the south and east as that high pressure ridge slides to the east. we'll have a couple weak systems visit us throughout the week.

in fact, the first one comes in late monday into tuesday. maybe a half inch of widespread rainfall. and then a few other systems before a bigger system looks like it may come our way by next weekend. that's pretty far out though. have to check back with us. warm temperatures remain in southern california. 85 palm springs. the fog holding on throughout the central valley but still very mild. low to mid-60s sacramento and fresno. upper 50s northern and southern sierra with some sunshine for you and temperatures here the warmest around the bay. you'll enjoy 66 in the santa clara as well as campbell today and on the peninsula a cloudy start. we'll see some partial afternoon clearing throughout the late morning and by the afternoon you should warm into mid-60s in redwood city and palo alto today. san francisco low 60s. it's warmer than you typically are this time of year. north bay you have fog but we'll have the sun work on that to

leaving flights delayed and highways closed. more than a foot of snow in some areas. the storm not nearly over yet. where it's heading. i don't think it's going to affect you guys but leaving a mess in much of the country. mark madoff has been found dead inside his manhattan apartment in an apparent suicide. this comes exactly two years after his father was arrested. our brian ross covering this story since it broke is all over the latest details this morning. plus there were over a thousand people in the church in raleigh, north carolina for the funeral of elizabeth edwards where her daughter kate read aloud to the final letter elizabeth sent to her children. who should you tip during the holiday season and how much. and where should you draw the line? wendy here to answer tricky questions. all coming up next on "good morning america." terry, these are very difficult

the 46-year-old son of bernie madoff was found dead in new york city yesterday an apparent suicide. mark madoff was found hanged in his manhattan apartment. >> two years to the day of his father's arrest, mark madoff hanged himself by a dog collar inside his manhattan apartment. >> mr. madoff apparently left some e-mail notes. no notes at the scene but had communicated with members of the family. >> a source close to the family tells abc news the suicide comes as a big shock. mark madoff had never been charged with a crime though in recent days we're told he had been very distressed. he had just been named in a new lawsuit by the court trustees seeking to recover money for the victims of his father's fraud and faced what his lawyer called unrelenting pressure from false

accusations and innuendo. police were called by a relative who discovered madoff's body. his two-year-old son slept in another room. his wife and four-year-old child were out of town. >> mr. madoff's father-in-law was there, called by mr. madoff's wife to check on the two-year-old. who was there and the two-year-old was fine. he was in the back bedroom. prison officials in north carolina where bernie madoff is serving his 150 year sentence declined to stay whether he had been notified. he can ask to attend his son's funeral but there's no guarantee the request would be granted. in the last two years we're told mark madoff's relationship with his father has been nonexistent. they who knew him say he was trying to build a new career but as the second anniversary of his father's arrest approached, we're told he was not handle it very well. the medical examiner will conduct an autopsy sunday.

>> police in vallejo say they have shot and killed a man armed with a gun. the shooting took place yesterday afternoon in an ally off sonoma boulevard and florida street. about 3:00 witnesses reported seeing the man carrying a gun. police confronted him innel alley, wounded up shooting him. he was pronounced dead at the hospital. family and friends gathered in north carolina to say good-bye to elizabeth edwards who died of breast cancer last week. she faced personal challenges and tragedy with tremendous grace and courage. john edwards did not speak at the funeral but their oldest daughter kate paid tribute to her mother. >> when she could barely speak anymore, my dad and i sat at her bedside and held each of her hands and she just kept looking at us back and forth saying i'm okay, i'm okay. she was way more worried about us than we were about her. >> the funeral was held in the very same church where mourners gathered to remember edwards'

teenager son wade who was killed in a car crash. she was laid to rest beside her son. palin has arrived in haiti as part of a humanitarian mission. palin is part of a mission put together by the samaritans relief organization. she's expected to stop by column lara treatment centers. demonstrators have gathered outside a british embassy in spain to protest the jailing of julian assange. they chanted freedom of speech and free assange. he's accused of sex crimes in sweden. he awaits an extradition hearing on december 14th. they were upset about the closure of wikileaks' swiss bank account. the captain and crew of an american airlines flight was

detained back in 2008. it happened after a crew member announced to passengers to reset their watches to local chavez time. in 2007, president hugo chavez created a new time zone for venezuela moving the clock back a half hour permanently. chavez happened to be on board that flight and heard the word local as loco which is spanish for crazy. the airline has apologized. a california sea lion suffering from buckshot wounds to the head is in critical condition in sausalito. the 300 pound sea lion lost his right eye and veterinarians say the pellets are too close to his brain to remove them. so for now he's receiving painkillers and antibiotics and is under close observes evaluation. he was found wednesday on the south sausalito beach. he was probably shot by a fisherman. taking a look at the sunday forecast. >> a lot of clouds now but hazy

santa paid an early visit to needy kids in oakland this weekend. >> ho ho ho ho ho! ho ho ho ho! >> merry christmas! >> merry christmas! >> i think that face just said merry christmas. wow! that really says the whole thing. santa arrived in a fire truck yesterday afternoon for an early christmas celebration. he gave out toys and clothing to 200 children living in east bay shelters. it's part of the 8th annual lend a hand celebration. >> the need has doubled since last year. last year we did about 200. this year our total is around 300. we're getting calls, forming a list so we can hand out toys after the event. >> lend a hand started more than 13 years ago and since then it has helped more than 4,000 families through its community programs. there will be a party next saturday for kids from three other shelters. everyone is a little nervous object the first day of a new job. santa claus is no exception.

the santa fired by the union square macy's this week is back making the holidays bright. >> merry christmas! >> a hero's welcome for john toomey, the fired santa in his new pre-christmas home at lefty's. >> all ages greeting him with cheers, smiles and thanks. taking a cue from an old classic holiday film they're calling this the miracle on gearry street. >> it's just terrific. short-term -- certainly unexpected on my part. which makes it even better. >> he was fired after an adult couple objected to a joke he told. the future was uncertain and then owner of lefty's offered him to bring his bag of goodies here. >> all i want to do is help the firefighters toy drive. and when i said who better than the spokesperson than santa. and when opportunity came, when i see opportunity, i take it. >> so santa will be here every

day in a reverse of tradition. instead of delivering toys he'll be receiving them. they hope to get 10,000 toys for the firefighters drive. john's story has gained national attention and macy's has issued a statement saying john has moved on and so has the store. they're focusing on "make-a-wish foundation" donation. so santa john has been taking requests here at his new home. >> what toy did you want most for christmas this year. >> say friend. >> a furry friend. i'll tell mrs. santa. >> i'm just curious what santa wants for christmas. >> well i'd be more than happy if the economy turned around. >> and isn't that the holiday spirit. >> ho ho ho ho ho ho! >> santa will be here until mid-day on the 24th then he has this other gig to do. if you want to drop by a toy,

mild temperatures once again today. starting with numbers in the 50s but some cool mid-40s at our coast. half moon bay 46, 56 mountain view and san jose. so we've got warmer air aloft. this is going to mix down and once again keep numbers well above the normal. 52 oakland and 53 napa. so some of the areas that kept the fog yesterday stay cool just in the 50s. 13 degrees above normal in santa rosa yesterday. 9 degrees above normal in and around san jose. areas of fog this morning with the slow clearing allowing for some sunshine. partly sunny to mostly sunshine later on today. warmest weather south of san francisco and that no burn today. here are visibilities in miles. 10 miles or better in concord. notice 5 miles hayward, mountain view not a problem but napa continues to see low visibility with that cooler denser air settling into the valley there. be careful if you're out and

about this morning. we will look for that fog to sit around the delta today so those light east winds continuing to draw in that central valley fog. elsewhere though just some fog along the coast and that dominate ridge looking dry today. dry tomorrow though. not as warm. increasing clouds as this ridge shifts to the east. then we have an upper level low in the gulf of alaska that's going to displace this ridge and bring us some rain maybe the order of a half inch or so come tuesday. that's the beginning of the pattern change for us. enjoy the warm weather in southern california 82 down there. 62 in fresno. upper 60s at our coast some of the mildest numbers in the south bay to the central coast. upper 50s in the northern sierra as well as the southern sierra. 65 sunnyvale today saratoga, los gatos. peninsula numbers 64 menlo park in san mateo. 63 downtown with the sunset

looking at a little bit of sun throughout the afternoon. north bay you'll see the low clouds the fog. and the hazy afternoon sun in santa rosa as nice afternoon for you in hayward and newark at 64. upper 50s antioch brentwood and down by the monterey bay we'll see another day pushing 70s in some areas. 7-day forecast slightly cooler. no rain tomorrow. widespread rain on tuesday. scattered showers wednesday, thursday and really looking at next weekend to see if we're gonna get more significant warming. >> all right. lisa thanks very much. for decades many cancer patients have lost their hair as a consequence of chemotherapy but now a pilot study is testing technology that could change that. health and science reporter carolyn johnson takes a look. >> working at the port of oakland, used to feeling the bay breezes flowing through her thick, wavy hair.

even after her diagnosis of cancer, keeping her hair has been a priority. >> i have seven years old twins. they know i have cancer and for me looking normal for them it's very important for them to see a mother that looks normal and has energy. >> to keep the chemotherapy drugs to keep her hair from falling out she's about to freeze her scalp. he begins wrapping her hair. >> first thing is the chin strap. >> the cap contains a lightweight gel that stays soft even in very cold temperatures. in a little over half an hour her scalp will cool to about 31 degrees. >> by cooling down the scalp it constricts the blood vessels and decreases the delivery of the chemotherapy drugs. >> if the freezing technique isfectiontive and used regularly

in europe for decades why isn't it used more widely here? it turns out the fda and some u.s. doctors have had safety concerns about the cold caps. >> the concern that cancer cells would hang out in the scalp and that the chemotherapy wouldn't get to the scalp. >> while there is little evidence to support those concerns the caps have not been rigorously tested in the u.s. her team has just launched a pilot study of competing technology called the dignacap. it employs the scene to cool the cap rather than relying on a freezer. the cancer patient says the freezing process can cause pain as the temperature's lowered. >> the way i've always described it, like sticking your head in lake tahoe for six hours. >> but she says it's worth the sacrifice to keep her hair. >> i'm a very open person and i've been writing a blog about this experience. it's not i'm so private i just
