display electric trough fies the skies over the bay area tonight. since friday, we have seen a three-storm punch, and now forecasters say we will see three more in the week ahead. throughout the region, the waves of wind and rain have knocked out power and toppled trees and causey minor flooding. i'm alan wang. let's go to leigh glaser and live doppler 7hd. we have seen quite a bit of a light show in some locations. you can see live doppler 7hd picking up the lightning bolts off the sonoma coast. we will take you just to the west of sea ranch. it is heading over toward the cloverdale area and we have been picking up moderate rain. santa rosa and roanoke park.

you can see a new park and that will be moving into central and southern marin county. and also south of san jose, nordal road and up toward morgan hill, moderate rain is starting to increase there as well. wave and wave of scattered showers will continue to move in. three-day rainfall totals. sonoma over two inches. three inches for mount saint huh lena. close to two and a half inches. but the big numbers as you head south. santa cruz three inches and over six inches at boulder creek. ben low man over seven inches. more rain in the forecast coming up. abc7's lilian kim is out chasing the rain. she joins us live from san an sal mow. >> we are on red hill avenue, and one lane of traffic has been blocked off. this is where a tree fell earlier today, and there is word that more could come crashing down. the bay area received a lot of

rain, and tonight even lightning. lightning strikes could be seen over san francisco bay. our cameras captured not one, but two this evening. but it was this lightning strike captured by the mount tam camera. >> this small piece of glass on the back. >> she was on the couch facebooking. >> i saw the crack of lightning and then i posted, oh my god, did anybody hear and see the thunder and lightning? my whole apartment shook like an earthquake. >> as the lightning struck, the rain came down hard. this was the scene in san francisco where shoppers were ducking for cover. all of the wet weather has kept tree removal companies busy. crews responded to this dry-cleaning business. it caused a 120-foot tall eucalyptus tree crashing on to the roof. >> they were worried about the impact on the i-beams and the

unloading on the roof. they are minimizing the wait. they have taken out 10,000 pounds. >> in oakland, a large tree came crashing down, this time at a home. nate boyd was in the bedroom whiefg his friends were sitting on the couch when the tree almost hit them. >> thank god they are alive and not injured. there is a branch about eight feet long and that big around sitting on my living room floor. it is like the clean fell through. as for this fall entry, crews will finish clearing it out, and it will bring out a crane to remove the other trees that look like they are bo to fall. lilian kim, c7 news. -- abc7 news. >> thank you, lilian. the rainfall is good news for california's drought-stricken creeks and streams. it brought out u.s. geological stream observer, and he took examples to see how much saidment is in the water.

it helped them anticipate clogged storm drain and the amount of runoff into the bay. and the heavy downpour also flooded a redwood city trailer park. several inches of rain was all it took. residents had to grab buckets and their rubber boots to keep the water out of their homes. the cars were able to tread through the water. and thousands of people lost power because of the weather-related problems. we still have scattered outages throughout the bay area. pg&e's power outage map is dotted with spots where the electricity has gone out. most of them affecting only a handful of people. also tonight, the forest service is posting an avalanche warning for the central sierra nevada south of interstate 80 and east of emigrant gap. the warning is for backcountry travel only. getting to the snow can be hazardous. right now it is snowsng in the sierra. the road up interstate 80 and highway 50 are coated in snow. chains are required on both

donner and echo summit. and dave is braving the elements to bring us the latest from out there. he is live in blue canen why. hi, dave. >> hi, alan. last time i saw you was the fires in l.a. if it is not one thing, it's another. up here you would not believe it is a break in the action. for folks who have been through this wild weekend, they are pretty stunned. for now it is great for people trying to get through the pass, dig out their cabins or for cal trans it is moving mountains and mountains of snow. howling wind and snow blocking trucks with no traction. >> basically you can't go anywhere. you you can't see anything. >> and it is night. what will you do? >> sleep in the car. >> enough to make you feel a little like a latter day donner party. >> it was raining and all of a sudden it got really bad in like five or ten minutes. >> and now you are stuck also. >> now my car is there and it is buried in snow. >> in conditions like these,

you may come back and find it not yus buried, but buried under a crust that could make it hard to dig out. >> conditions treacherous enough, but dangerous heavy, wind, driven snow create creating conditions in the back i cr. to give you an idea there are conditions that are dangerous in the mountains, look at this. this sun stable. -- this is unable. -- unstable. you have layer upon layer, and it doesn't take much to send it crashing down. the days of heavy rain are soaking deeply into the earth and loosening mud and rock. this collapsing hillside is keeping one of two westbound lanes of interstate 80 closed all day and into sunday night with plenty more rain ahead jie. there will always be something to look out for, and even further up cal trans is warning of avalanches with the excessive snow. a lot of wet snow is creating a has hazard. >> as the night comes on, some are hit so hard they pull over

it is unclear if this is weather-related, but a pedestrian was struck and killed this evening around 7:30. it happened near the highway -- highway 24 off-ramp. the vehicle also injured another pedestrian and only one eastbound lane is open. the name of the victim has not been released. and bart riders are still experiencing delays of about 15 minutes tonight after an electrical malfunction earlier today inside the trans bay tube. passengers reported smoke around 2:00 p.m. as a precaution, bart shut down one of the two tracks between the east bay and san francisco. some afternoon riders were not too happy about the delay. >> a friend's 90th birthday party, and it was over at 6:00. i won't get there in time. if i don't, he may be gone. >> it happens sometimes. >> crews are still trying to fix the problem. the only trains unaffected are

between richmond and free -- fremont. a possible bump in the road in san francisco's effort to host the america's cup. tomorrow officials in newport, rhode island plan to express a letter in hosting the race. america's cup organizers say they are spreading san francisco's bid while exploring other cities. san francisco's original bid was deemed too financially risky and the board of supervisors has since revised it. the venue decision is due by december 31st. south korea is firing live artillery in defiance of north korean threats. why residents in the area are being told to go under underground. and the senate hands the president some big victories this weekend. it is a month after the mid-term election. shalacking. and people are heading to the mall in

to stay inside bombshelters. just a month ago the north shelled the same south korean island in retaliation for a similar drill. there are no immediate signs of any north korean retaliation tonight. and the u.s. senate convened for a rare weekend session. most of the day was spent debating a new arms control treaty with russia. but final approval of the so-called new start treaty was uncertain. here is abc's david curly. >> after legislative victories on the tax bill and the don't ask, don't tell policy, president obama has his eyes on a big prize, probably the biggest. >> it is not about winning a victory for an administration or political party. it is about the safety and security of the united states of america. >> even so, the proposed arms control treaty with russia with dozens of nuclear war heads on either side would be a notch in the cap. do they have enough? >> i believe we do.

washington. shoppers came out in droves on the last weekend before christmas tackling their gift list and driving traffic up at malls across the country. since october 31st, master card's spending says americans are buying more. clothing sales are up almost 10%, jewelry up 2.5%. sales of consumer electronics are up just .60%. it is mostly because of deeply discounted television. on-line sales were up 13.5%. and a spokesman for spending pulse says this is the first normal christmas in three years. the rain and the snow is not quite normal. >> and there are some of the normals this evening! the lightning strikes. the rooftop cam is showing you a couple hours ago it was lighting up the sky out there. now we are waiting for more bands of rain to move in. live doppler 7hd is showing an active night tonight,

especially in the north bay. there is the lightning bolt that moved across parts of the north bay. right now we are picking up rain, petaluma as well as the novato area. this particular band of showers, there are more developing off the course. it is moving from the northwest to the southeast novato and san rafael, get ready for the showers to move into your area for the next 15 to 20 minutes. we will continue with the showers. also we are getting some cooler air moving in with these cells. a few isolated thunderstorms could develop overnight. we lil look for the same tomorrow. and then the next threat of some heavy rain will be tuesday night, overnight tuesday night and early wednesday morning. and then we get a little break. the satellite-radar composite, this afternoon, most of the moisture plume, you can see it

here, pushed into southern california. that's why we had a break earlier this evening. now we are seeing a little bit of a low developing on the tail end of this. and this is what is starting to move toward the north. we have this tropical moisture coupled with cooler air moving in. and we will be sandwiched between these two air masses, and that is going to mean isolated showers overnight. isolated thunderstorms, i should say, and isolated showers picking up in intensity, especially tomorrow morning. in fact, you can see the projection at 7:00 tomorrow. rain is picking up, 9, 10:00. look at the yellow there. very heavy rain. because we have the cooler air moving in as well, there is a good bet we will see more thunderstorm activity develop across the bay area. tomorrow night we will get a little bit of a break and then more rain, heavier rain moves in by tuesday evening. if you are traveling tomorrow, the winter storm warning is still in affect. we are talking about it during

the newscast. they are expecting six to 18 inches of additional snow at lake levels. the snow level is coming down to 4500 feet. stormy conditions and the rain is heavy at times. isolated thunderstorms. los angeles 58°. san diego is getting wet as well, 60° in las vegas. highs for our monday, remember, periods of thunder showers -- periods of showers heavy at times. we could still be in the 50s, mid to upper 50s across much of the bay area. the showers will begin to taper off by tomorrow night. things will pick back up as we head into the overnight hours tuesday night into wednesday morning, periods of heavy rain. getting a little bit of a break and check out thursday and friday and we will dry out a bit. the next chance after that will be christmas eve which is friday night and saturday, christmas day with some periods of heavy rain as well. a little dry slot that we have the rain moving in.
