good evening. it's looking like a green holiday season for retailers. after christmas sales are in full swing today and the national retail federation is making optimistic projections. tomas is in hill vale mall and seeing possible economic recovery. >> some stores opened as early as 7:00 in the morning others have been opened until for 24 hours straight. the traffic at hillsdale shopping center, the sales are

working. >> everything is on sale. there are clearance sales offers of 60% up to 70% off on the store. these signs are luring shoppers to spend their after christmas money. it seems to be working. >> we get excited this time of the year. we try to make the kids happy and everybody else. we tend to go a little overboard. >> after christmas sales account for a large portion of many retailers' income. they believe sales are a little lax. >> there are not that many people spending. >> they predict they will spend $451 billion this says a more than 3% increase. according to a professor of golden gate university the figures may be low. >> it may be 5.5% more.

online it's 17% to 18% more. >> san francisco's union square area some shoppers concerned about the economy they are spending just as much or a little more than they did last year. >> we are concerned about the economy, but they are having big sales but if you can buy now and save later. >> and they target december 26th as one of two major shopping days. >> i shop the day after christmas and the day after father's day. >> the professor says if consumers spend good about spending an economic recovery could be on the horizon. >> if consumers are spending more money, there is more jobs when the unemployment numbers improve people feel more confident.

it's good to see people spending money. >> the professor also says discounts at retailers aren't as deep as they were last year. that could be an indication that retailers are looking at a little more profitable year in hoping to make more money this year. meanwhile, a winter storm on the east coast is causing a domino effect that is reaching all the way to the bay area. dozens of flights have been cancelled or delayed. more than two dozen flights to the new york area were cancelled today. one foreign exchange student at u.c. berkeley she'll have to visit new york another at another time. >> i was going to new york but the flight got cancelled because of bad weather. i got a refund and i am waiting to see what is next. >> flights from oakland to san jose have only men minimally affected because there are fewer

metrodome collapsed. >> and the rain that passed through the bay area is bringing more snow to the sierra. here is what it looked like a couple hours from heavenly camera at about 8,000 feel. plenty of skiers were enjoying the slopes and there are no chain restrictions in effect today. this is a look at interstate 80. firefighters discovered a set of strange circumstances after a fire at a marijuana dispensary in san francisco today. police say the norcal relief center is licensed but they are not sure if they are licensed to grow the large crop of pot discovered in the back room. the building's meeting had been bypassed and grow lights were using free electricity. the fire was extinguished and no one was hurt. >> the office on the rear of the building where the fire seemed to have started at. >> police also found a loaded handgun in the dispensary. they are in the process of

questioning the owners of that dispensary. >> bay area holiday season arrests for driving under the influence are slightly up compared to last year. california highway patrol said police made 40 d.w.i. arrests just one more than the same period last year. good news there have been not fatalities during the holiday enforcement period so far. that was also true last year. some 258 d.u.i. arrests have been made statewide. >> there is much more ahead including a deadly tour bus crash in egypt. the latest and the survivors. >> later now that christmas is over let the recycling begin. one bay area city announces getting rid of your christmas tree the green way. >> here is a look at san jose temperatures in the upper 50s. notice the sunshine a little light rain but more windy wet

eight americans have been killed in a tour bus crash in egypt. officials say three tour buses were traveling together around dawn when the middle bus crashed into a parked dump truck loaded with sand. eight americans were killed. many of them were rushed to cairo for treatment. >> there were two cases admitted in the icu and both cases are managed and they are stable and

dialogue. >> all right, lisa argen is in and we got to dry out a little today. >> still showers and we're going to see a break but more heavy rain much colder system on the way. a live look outside from the southeast camera, this is the bay bridge. you see the clouds around. temperatures or the mild side. really not a bad day but as we check out live doppler 7 hd. you'll notice the showers west of the golden gate also around half moon bay and pescadero and into the east bay heading into the san ramon valley. north of san leandro. if you are going to be out and about tonight it will be cool and light wind fog will be developing as well and some of the showers rotating in along the peninsula millbrae and redwood city in the next couple of hours. by 8:00 things are settling down and we'll see a dry evening leading to a dry start to the workweek if you are working. >> 55 in oakland. 56 in san francisco. upper 50s in san jose.

highlights lingering showers tonight. morning fog, could be dense in the north and east bay valleys and then a partly cloudy tomorrow. dry day will be monday and then by monday night the clouds thicken up and we'll see wet and windy weather return. next origin of the storm from the gulf of alaska much colder so we are looking at rain on tuesday and ending on wednesday but blustery winds behind it. lows dropping into the upper 30s in north bay valleys. a few pockets in the clouds with upper possible for santa rosa. 43 for palo alto and san mateo. satellite and radar picture shows a weak system rotating through the northern part of the state and that has triggered the showers mainly north bay counties but still the chance right through 8:00 tonight. we have pressure off shore that will keep us dry tomorrow.

we will see a partial clearing but out in the pacific a couple of areas of low pressure and it's dropping down from the north. here is a look at the rest of state. southern california enjoying upper 60s and mountains look pretty good upper 30s and snow falling right now at the tahoe valley airport. tuesday night into wednesday tough going into the sierra nevada. if you are headed there you may want to wait until wednesday afternoon. then we're dry overnight into monday. thickening clouds for monday night and look what happens as we head tuesday morning rain is spreading to the south and east and by the noon hour pushing into the east bay and south bay. then by wednesday sweeps on out of here but showers. low snow levels. mount hamilton could see snow
