firefighters had to struggle to carry out a woman from the third floor on a stretcher. they carefully lowered her down on a truck ladder. she and two other residents of the apartment building had to be given first aid before being taken to san francisco general for evaluation. the fire caught this family by surprise. >> somebody knock door. open the door, say, police. out. upstairs, on fire, get out. get out. >> chan is one of 45 residents who are now homeless. 38 of the residents are being housed by the red cross here. everybody is physically fine. >> there were a couple of smoke inhalation people, but i think they have been released and they're here now. so, that part is okay. there were no serious injuries. >> reporter: this bag of clothes is all chan could get out of his apartment. >> the fire, and all that the

clothes is left. >> reporter: your clothes? >> yeah. need to do some laundry. >> reporter: many residents will be put up here until the red cross can fine them more permanent housing. duncan chan was stoic. >> life, you never know what's going to happy. >> reporter: we haven't been able to talk to fire investigators to find out what caused the fire. the building was being rennovated. the owner wouldn't comment on camera. we're told there's a possibility a firefighter was injured attempting to fight this blaze. we haven't been able to confirm that, either, reporting live in san francisco, abc-7 news. >> john: napa county residents woke up to a white knew year. three or four inches of snow fell overnight, and some cars got stuck. a tour bus and up to six other

middletown said it was already snowing at 1600 feet. if you're traveling to tahoe, a tough drive tonight into tomorrow evening. six to 12 inches of snow expected at lake level. up to a foot and a half above 7,000 feet. 80 is open. i'll tell you more in a little bit. >> john: john san jose police are searching for suspects in that city's first homicide of the year. the victim was local high school student. polices responded to the shooting at 1:00 this morning. officers found 15-year-old oscar gonzalez of san jose on the front porch of his home, dead from at least one gun shot wound. investigators believe the shooting was gang-related. san francisco also investigating its first homicide of the year. man was shot multiple times

outside the club 21 bar at turk and taylor street. the victim was between 30 and 40 years old. investigators are trying to figure out what happened leading up to the killing. there are dozens of new laws that go went into effect at the stroke of midnight. possession of an ounce of less of marijuana will be just an infraction similar to a traffic ticket. there is still $100 fine but no jail fine and won't go on your criminal record. california is requiring baked goods made in the state have no trans-fat. all traffic tickets in the state will add an extra $4 to pay for air ambulances. and the state has added new policies to make it easier for parents to get health insurance for children with preexisting medical conditions. arnold schwarzenegger has two more days as governor. after seven years in sacramento, the 63-year-old schwarzenegger says he will hit the speech

and we have some light rain heading towards berkeley and fremont as well. monterey bay, some right rain near the -- a little east of gilroy. so nothing to stop throughol evening plans, but it's cool outside so definitely bring a jacket. a lot of 40s, and low 50s through redwood city. a cool day tomorrow. light to moderate rain tomorrow. a weather advisory in effect in lake county and tahoe which i mentioned at the beginning of the hour, and then dry days ahead on monday. temperatures will be climbing back up by the end of the work week. we have this cutoff low sliding south. so instead of moving east, it lingers and brings the moisture over the bay area.

so that's why we see all that rain through tomorrow. here's the forecast model starting tonight. light rain around the bay area. even some snow? lake county, and by 9:00, we could see some moderate rain in and areas along the coast, and parts of the coast up to santa cruz and morgan hill, but for the most part the nature of the rain will be right and -- will be light and moderate. then scatters showers tomorrow afternoon, and then the rain doesn't leave the bay area until sunday night, into monday morning. so might have a leftover sprinkle monday morning. overnight lows, on the cool side. santa rosa and napa, vallejo, and then mid-40s for the most of us, including morgan hill. low 40s there for you tonight. tomorrow, we're also going to be cool once again. temperatures below normal. only 47 in sap -- san rafael.

john the sun finally came out for the rose parade after a series of storms battered southern california. hundreds of thousands of spectators lined the streets of pasadena to watch the disploatz
