>> john: good evening. 45 san franciscoans forced out of their homes after fire breaks out in their apartment building. many of them are staying in a shelter. we are at the site of the fire on montgomery street. >> reporter: just across the street here where the two-alarm fire occurred this morning and 45 people who lived there in this building most of them elderly, are now homeless. they have had a very dismal and depressing new year's day, and this morning a very terrifying and rude awakening. firefighters responsibled to the two-alarm fire at 1:30 a.m. when they arrived, the third

floor of the building was fully engulfed in flames. firefighters had to carry out a woman from the third floor on a stretcher. they can ifully lower -- carefully lowered her down. sisters were free -- frightened after smelling smoke and heard pounding on their door. >> these men came and opened the door, and said, get out, it's fire. >> reporter: he says his family was rushed out of their home. >> somebody knock the door, out out. upstairs all on fire. get out! get out of the house. >> reporter: chan is one of 45 residents in the building who are now homeless. the red cross is sheltering 48 of those people here. >> everybody is physically fine. there were a couple of smoke inhalations, but they have been

abc-7 news. >> police are investigating their first hdzs of the year. in san francisco, man was shot several times outside the club 21 bar at turk and taylor streets in the tenderloin. witnesses say the victim and his killer were sitting on the sidewalk when the shooting started. police are hoping witnesses can help. san jose police are looking for suspects in the shooting death of a 15-year-old high school student. police found the body of oscar gonzalez on the front porch of his home just after 1:00 a.m. he had been shot at least once. investigators believe that killing was gang related. oakland's first homicide of the year happened nine minutes after midnight. a teenage boy was kill and two others were wounded outside an apartment complex on hyde street. no reaftz, and as of this afternoon, place police had no information on a possible suspect. >> president obama's controversial former minister

jeremiah wright was in the east bay to launch a new movement in the african-american community. faith leaders say it's a plan for positive social change here's lisa amin gulezian. >> be active in your community in the bay area has made national news for situations that have not always been in the best of light. >> lisa: on this new year's day the people of the baptist ministers union, or bmu are committed to change. they say they don't like what they're seeing in their cities. >> our community we're not who we should be. not only economically. >> lisa: for, some their spirit is also broken, especially after crimes like the gang rape of a 15-year-old girl in richmond, and the shooting death of an unarmed basher -- barber in oakland by the police. >> has to be a change strategy for survival in our churches.

more pictures coming in because snows expected in lake county where the winter weather advisory in effect until 8:00 tomorrow. so the snow level 2500 feet, and up to eight inches of snow expected above 8,000 feet. there's also winter weather advisory in tahoe so if you're driving to and from there could be tough on highway 50 and on i-80. 10 to 18 inches of snow expect above 7,000 feet. here's a look at live doppler 7. a lot of activity and most of the precipitation coming down in the form of lying rain. we -- light rain. we have the seven-day forecast coming up. >> john: tonight some new laws are in effect covering a wide range of issues from pot to baked goods to traffic tickets. starting today, possession of an

escape. ominous clouds bore witness to the twister then sigh soar sirens wailed a warning. >> there were boards laying on top of us and i managed to get them off me and screamed for help. >> reporter: the governor got a first-hand look at the damage. >> dozens of people either staying in hotels or with friends, and as the folks come back, they have to be housed other places, too so a very quick moving storm. >> reporter: the tornado fueled by warm air very unusual this time of year touched down from arkansas to southern mississippi and southern and central illinois. elsewhere stormy weather continues. >> get out of the way. >> caused a 25-car pileup. in california, they're digging out, too. mounds of mud instead of snow and digging in for more rain on the way. >> john: a russian passenger jet

carrying 124 people caught fire and explode on a runway in sigh beer cramp three people were -- siberia. most of the crew and passengers were evacuated before the explosion. the plane filled with black smoke. panicked passengers climbed over each other to escape. people came from all over the bay area to celebrate new year's in san francisco. >> happy new year! >> john: there was an estimated quarter million people lining the streaks. when the clock struck midnight and the fireworks went off the crowds watched the spectacular display of lights. the 15-minute show was launched from barges a thousand feet out in the bay. >> baby new year is a little girl in the east bay who looks

to be the first born in the bay area. she was delivered at 12:07 this morning. the little girl was premature. weighs four pounds and five ounces her mother was surprised to learn her baby was the first to be born this year. >> i didn't believe it. she can't be the first baby, has to be a whole bunch of other babies born. but she is the first one. >> john: the little girl is now zaria haiti. zaraa means help from goad and haiti is a battle warrior. >> frances: we have some wet weather before the dry days ahead. here's the live look from the hd cam overlooking the embarcadero we have hat -- had light rain in san francisco. this is the loop of the last three hours.

you'll notice the source of the wet weather from the southwest and the pacific swooping up, and focusing on the north bay. the light rain are in areas of blue and the areas of yellow more moderate rainfall. east of american canyon fairly dry right now, and as we head further south around monterey bay, we see some heavier rain east of morgan hill and more rain coming in from the pacific. so it's a cool night tonight. although we're still hanging on in the 50s in thesome places with the cloud cover. so we have the light to moderate rain through tomorrow. then we have the weather advisories in lake county and lake tahoe. the dry days are headed our way started on monday.

we have his cutoff low from the jet stream and it's sliding south. that's going to continue to bring the moisture to our area through tomorrow and that low is going to head south into southern california, bringing them some rain and cold weather. so the forecast model shows the green and light greens showing light rain. then by tomorrow evening most of it clears out, and then into monday, we should be dry for the most part. so that's nice. you can put those umbrellas away for a bit. the lows tonight in the 40s. mid-40s around the bay. upper 30s in the north expwai santa rosa napa and vallejo. look for a cool 41 in morgan hill and they won't climb much tomorrow. with the wet weather. temperatures a good five degrees below normal. san francisco high only 48 degrees. 45 in napa. 50 in oakland, and 52 in san jose, further south, we're going to see low 50s once again for

santa cruz, gilroy and hole hisster. here's the seven-day forecast. another day of rain, a wet start to the new year. but then we have that slight chance of rain maybe a leftover shower, but for the most part that will be monterey bay and south. the bay area will be dry patchy valley fog. >> john: thanks, frances. the sun finally came out for the rose parade. hundreds of thousands of spectators watched the floats and marching bands, behaving temperatures into the low 40s overnight. a 17-year-old was the year's rose queen. the parade was held up briefly when one of the floats got stuck of the start of the line upthey hate to pull they had to pull it with a tow truck.
