u.s. city. she says her priorities are fighting crime creating jobs especially green jobs and bolstering city schools with mentors. the celebration at chabot science center and it will kick off with a runs from the renaissance plaza and end at the fox theater where swearing in will take place. >> san francisco firefighters are looking into the cause of a blaze at an apartment building new year's day. none of the residents were seriously injured but the fire has left them homeless. tomas ramon reports. >> firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire on montgomery when they arrived the floor was fully engulfed in flames. they carefully lowered a woman counsel on a ladder to geter to to paramedics. she had to be given to first aid

shooting started. police are hoping to hear from more witnesses. >> san jose police are accepting for suspects in the shooting death of a 15-year-old high school student. police found the body of oscar gonzalez of his home just after 1:00 a.m. yesterday. he had been shot at least ones. they believe the killing was gang-related. >> an oakland's first homicide of the new year happened nine minutes after midnight can yesterday. a teenage boy was killed and two others were wounded outside an apartment complex on hyde street. police say they have no information about suspects. >> president obama's former minister jeremiah wright was in the east bay this weekend. he is helping launch a new movement in the local african-american community faith leaders say its plan for positive social change. >> here is lisa amin gulezian.

the governor elect jerry brown takes the oath of office tomorrow. new details this morning about a pastor who had to end a hostage crisis in dallas texas. here is the story. >> inside this bank chaos as ten people were taken hostage and held over a span of five grueling hours. >> i can hear people crying and people shaking next to me. >> they went to the bank to use the atm says he feared for her life. >> the drama started at 11:00 a.m. on new year's eve from four men entered the bank and demanded money. they tried to flee through a backdoor and raymond johnson was arrested but police believe two suspects got away. >> but one alleged hostage taker was still in the bank. 39-year-old sam samuel barner.

>> he was yelling that the other suspects took off without him. >> he got very nervous. at one point he urinated on the floor. >> over the next two hours police negotiators spoke to him by phone trying to release the hostages unharmed. he released five of them. then a strange request he asked to speak with a pastor so a hostage put him in touch with a pastor that talked to him about forgiveness. >> calling his family. he was sorry he messed up. >> after 4:00 p.m. he surrendered and released the remaining hostages unharmed. >> i'm great v grateful that nobody was hurt. >> they say the suspect asked him to pray for him and then he released those hostages. >> up next the incident that triggered an evacuation of the u.s. capitol this weekend and

everything is back to normal at the u.s. capitol this morning after a scare that had police evacuating the building and sent jets scrambling. it was because a jet airliner

lost contact in the morning. it was heading to reagan's national airlift of the capitol police issued an evacuation order after they were unable to talk to the pilot. they made contact about 15 minutes later and they say the pilot had turned his radio to the wrong frequency. a russian passenger jet carrying 124 people caught fire and explode order a runway in siberia this weekend. three people were killed and 46 injured in yesterday's fire. most of the passengers and crew evacuated before the explosion. people on board described the chaotic scene as the plane filled with thick black smoke. panicked passengers were trying to escape. preliminary reports say the fire broke out in one of the engines as the plane taxied for takeoff.

mother nature's fury. >> dozens of tornados crashed the holiday in five states spreading death and destruction. >> my whole house started shaking windows were busting out and then it was gone. >> it took residents by surprise with little warning. this video from missouri whom thousands clouds bore witness to it and then sirens. this woman and child got out. >> there were boards on top of us and i managed to get help. >> they got a firsthand look at the damage. >> dozens of people are staying at hotels or friends. as the folks come back to it has to they have to be helped from a very broad and quick moving storm. >> it touched down arkansas an up to southern and central

a break in the action around much of the bay area. here is line of showers just off the peninsula, but the heaviest rain continues to be down by watsonville and morgan hill and gilroy. areas of low pressure that is sinking south that is taking much of the rain with it but 580 and 680 still a little wet as you head over to the livermore valley. reports of sunshine in the north bay but the rain not quite over yet because we are looking at wet land showers and new pattern takes place bringing us fair skies. numbers in the low 40s. we are looking at fairfield at 43. sea in mountain view. 48 in los gatos. 59 in fremont. winds will be gusty around napa east at 20. airport delays of 2 hours and 12 minutes. very slow there. scattered showers and areas of

fog. chance of a thunderstorm. then we will look for a dry day starting tomorrow, maybe next weekend and return to some rain. area of low pressure is about 180 miles west of santa cruz. as it sinks to the south and east we're looking at that wrap-around moisture. he is the timing on the rain through the rest of the morning. focus continues to be south of san francisco. still pop-up showers throughout the day and look at that to the north, a little rain-and-snow mix for the higher elevations of the north bay. by 5:00 tonight still scattered showers and sacramento valley also the rain picking up as it hits the mountains of the santa cruz area. monterey county -- rainfall amounts up to quarter to half an inch. and inch around ben lomond that will be additional half inch through tonight. winter weather advisory for the

welcome back. it is 9:40. a live look at the transamerica pyramid shrouded in fog and clouds. by the way there are two hour delays for planes coming into sfo so for people ending their holiday vacation they might be frazzled when they come in. it's the new year and we appreciate you waking up this sunday morning with us. >> floodwaters continue to rise in queensland in the northeast of australia. residents have been evacuated. airport is shut down. the flooding covers half of queensland about the size of france and germany combined. rivers are surging and overflowing into low land towns as the water hits heads toward the ocean.

you look at that, well rain okay. >> good thing the system is moving to the south and east of us because our soil is so saturated. rainfall in santa cruz mountains as it pushes up against the mountains. you will have pretty good downpours today but at the airports sfo the fog and elsewhere around the bay emeryville some clouds around but a little bit of a break there. and finally one her shot for you the golden gate bridge right now pushing on across the bay keeping it wet around interstate 80 right now. let's take you around the bay and show you where the heaviest rain is. notice the break throughout the central bay area the heaviest rain in the south bay gilroy santa cruz mountains. that will continue to be the focus of the heaviest rain and

campbell pushing into san jose more heavy rain into pilpitas. light to moderate rain taking you further north. there is a break in parts of the east bay but in parts of brentwood and light showers. benicia and vallejo you are wet but still showers throughout the afternoon hours, but napa is looking at rain shower passing on through and numbers are sort of mild. upper 40s to low 50s. we'll get into a warmer weather pattern and sunnier weather pattern tomorrow. breezy winds as well as the fog gusting at 20 around napa. wind along the coast keeping things brisk right through the afternoon. areas of fog this afternoon and we'll keep the rain in the forecast and even have a chance of a thunderstorm but for the most part the rain continues to sink to the south.

dry days ahead starting tomorrow lasting all week long. low pressure sliding to the south and east wraparound moisture pushing up to the north and east. we'll is continue to see rain throughout the day but during the morning hours it breaks up. by 2:00 in the afternoon still showers around the north bay half moon bay peninsula and even by the early evening hours still we're looking at the rain from san jose to santa cruz mountains to gilroy and morgan hill. by tonight quarter to half an inch throughout the northern and central portion of the bay closing in on an inch in the santa cruz mountains and an additional inch not out of question. we will look for the snow to begin and stick through the afternoon with poor visibility. it's been a slow start as the system sinks south. we're only going to get to a foot or half a foot. at about 7,000 feet about a

foot and a half. so scattered showers. look at the temperatures -- low to mid 40s in the north bay. a really cool afternoon with low to mid-50s. we're still looking at rain-snow mix possibly around lake county. icy roads 53 in salinas. here is the seven-day let you ponder this for a while you see sunny and mild. a little fog in the morning. today will be the rainiest day but after that the rain will go away. >> isn't that nice to have something new to report. you don't have to worry about this bags under your eyes they are using stem cells to treat them. as carolyn johnson tells us the goal is to produce longer
