good evening everyone. we have late word that democratic representative gabrielle gifford's tucson office and the surrounding area has been evacuated after a suspicious package was found. an attack on the congresswoman today has her fighting for her life. giffords was shot this morning in arizona at a town hall meeting in front of a grocery store. the gunman killed five others, including a federal judge and a child. meanwhile, president obama is calling in fbi director robert muller to oversee the investigation. arizona governor jan brewer ordered flags at half staff and

called giffords a moderate democrat and a friend. cap ideal -- copol police are on alert and lawmakers are taking extra safety precautions. we're live in washington, dc. >> reporter: 18 people were shot and six were killed in arizona, and here in washington, where federal law enforcement authorities are on the case, officials are searching for a motive. congress woman gabrielle giffords was making an appearance when a gunman rushed up and fired. she was rushed to the university of arizona medical center. >> the neurosurgeons have finished operating on her, and at the current time i'm optimistic about recovery. >> reporter: at least ten others were also shot. some were airlifted to the hospital by helicopter. a gunman was taken into custody as police swarmed the scene.

>> president obama is among those condemning the bloodshed. >> our hearts go out to the family members of those who have been slain. we are going to get to the bottom of this and we're going to get through this. >> reporter: representative giffords was re-elected to the third north american -- november. giffords took part in thursday's reading of the u.s. constitution on the house floor. >> congress shall make no law respecting establishment of religions. >> reporter: she is married to captain mark kelly who is set to command the last flight hoff the space shuttle. police must now unravel the latest shooting rampage. >> the gunman is identified as jared loughner. he tried to enlist but was rejected. >> alan: now investigators are looking into the internet

postings of the alleged shooter, jared loughner. this is a picture of the suspect. he published several videos on youtube with messages about the government, currency and mind control. the videos mostly feature text on a background. in one, loughner described inventing a new u.s. currency and complain ited about the ill literacy rates of people living in gifford's congressional district. he had a myspace page that was taken down minutes after he was identified as the alleged shooter. in a message he asked his friends, please don't make me mad at me. in the bay area, gifford's congressional colleagues responded to the shooting and their own safety. lisa amin gulezian is live in san francisco where former speaker of the house nancy pelosi held an event earlier today. lisa? >> lisa: pelosi held an event

earlier in san francisco, and a lot of politicians were in attendance. even though this is supposed to be an event that had a celebration that involved her con sit students there's a lot of sadness. >> today is a sad day for our country. >> reporter: some of the state's strongest leaders struggled to find the words to express their concern over gabrielle giffords. nancy pelosi met with her constituents today during an annual event. still at the top of her mind wag the a arizona congresswoman. >> our prayers and thoughts are with all of them, all of their family, congresswoman gifford is a great patriotic american. >> reporter: pelosi led a moment of silence for her kole expleeg friend. >> there's always danger. our job is to be out there and talk to people. >> reporter: john gay mandy -- took part in the moment as well.

they both hold congress on your corner events. >> obviously there's a risk, and she paid a huge price for being available to her con sit tune si, to answer questions, to not hide back in a room with a photo op and a sound bite. >> reporter: security for most elected officials is light. the congressman arrived for our meeting accompanied only by an aide. still, he insists what happened in tucson today will not make him change his ways. >> i stay we where i am on the street corner with you or whomover. i don't like the security, and i don't want it. >> reporter: but security at the former house speakers event was very time. staffers would not say if security levels were heightened because of today's events. the one thing obvious, officials say the shootings need to be a wakeup call and all the internal fighting going on in washington,

dc needs to stop. lisa amin gulezian, abc-7 news. >> alan: the shooting hit close to home for another bay area house member in november of 1978, jackie spear was shot multiple times while trying to escape the jonestown massacre in guyana. a congressman leon ryan was killed. report roirt just spoke with congresswoman spear on the phone. she says she is definitely having flashbacks to the assassination of congressman leo line in 1978. >> sick to my stomach and in total disbelief. the more we heard, the more anxious i became. i fear for what is happening in our country, and i think we all have to pause now and just lower the rhetoric. >> reporter: representative spear thinks there's too much hate being spewed out on the air

waves, and she thinks the country needs more civility. she calls it an assault on the democracy we hold so dear. >> we're all reeling in disbelief and astonishment at such a despicable act being placed on someone who we know and love and who was doing her job. >> reporter: she called representative giffords an extraordinary members of congress, one of the bright young stars who is very committed to her cop constituency. spear had a similar event on the corner a few weeks ago. she thinks the country will have to pause and think about what this means when it comes to security but that she will continue to be accessible to the public. live in the news room. amy hollyfield. abc-7 news. >> alan: the scheduled college basketball game between stanford and the university of arizona

was post postponed because of the shooting. they chose to delay the game out of respect to the victims and the families. a spokesperson said arizona's security contingent for the home game is involved with the shooting incident. it's reset for 11:30 a.m. tomorrow in arizona. still more ahead, including a walking tour through one of oakland's toughest neighborhoods by the city's new mayor. san francisco's newboard of supervisors takes a vote for board president, who could be mayor for a day. >> leigh: hi there. i know, another cold, foggy, overcast day for much over the -- for much of the bay area. things will improveeeeeeeeeeeee6

>> alan: oakland mayor jean quan walked a tough beat. she went door-to-door in a neighbor that is ranked month the top five most crime-ridden neighborhoods in the city. on tuesday, six people were shot, including an innocent bystander who was shot inside his home. 33x is the focus of mayor quan's new crime reduction and rejustify nation plan. >> having a council of residents who work together with the beat officer is i think absolutely necessary to keep crime going down. >> alan: quan's also encouraging neighbors to join a new neighborhood crime prevention council. it meets later this month. >> the mayor is the first asian-american woman to lead a major u.s. city.

now san francisco is on the verge of having its first asian-american mayor. en[applause] >> alan: new members of the board of supervisors were sworn in, and the board re-elected david which chiu as interim president. lee is voted as interim mayor. it appears lee roz appointment is a lock. seven of the supervisors who voted for him will still been -- still be on the board on tuesday. chuu could be mayor for the day. >> just ahead, the latest from the consumer electronics show in las vegas, including gage eds for the whole family. also, more sun and more rain, both in the forecast. leigh glaser will have more on that coming up.

there. one mile visibility right now with the fog the accept rosa, two miles in concord. seven miles in san jose, so keep that in mind if you're out and about tonight. the fog is increasing, and the visibilities will really drop rapidly overnight. we'll see little clearing, and slight he warmer temperatures for sunday, and as we head into the middle part of next week, we'll bring more rain into the forecast. this is pretty much the setup today. we had the coastal fog here. the valley fog inland. those winds still trending more offshore and that's picking up the central valley fog and pushing it out towards the bay and the coast and that scenario will stay with us for the overnight hours tonight, and then it does look like we may gate little break in all this fog by tomorrow afternoon. we have areas of cold front to the north, and as this thing passes towards the east, it will have to scour out also bit of

the valley fog. once we get on the become side of this cold front, high pressure will build in, and definitely going mean a little bit more sunshine for us the next several days, and also some warmer temperatures. check out this. this is our fogcast. you can see the fog in the inland locations, and then as the high pressure builds in, we should start to see a little more in the way of partial clearing tomorrow afternoon. it will be another cold night tonight. watch out for the possibility of black eye. santa rosa, 33. 34 for nap patch dense -- for napa. 40 for san francisco. and tomorrow, being optimistic that we will see a little more sunshine, we'll bring temperatures up a few more degrees, with campbell, 52. 53 for san jose. half moon bay, 52. redwood city, mixture of clouds and sun. 52, san francisco. you should warm to the low 50s there. 51 for petaluma. 51 for napa.
