possible suspect. here's john hen drop -- from the nation's capital. >> gabrielle giffords was making a public appearance when a man ran up and opened fire. the arizona democrat was shot in the head and rushed to nearby university medical center. >> she is in critical condition. the neurosurgeons have finished operating on her, and i can tell you at the current time i'm optimistic about recovery. >> reporter: at least ten others were also shot. some were airlifted to the hospital in a helicopter. a gunman was taken into custody as police swarmed the scene. >> a great tragedy for the state ofard and the country. >> our hearts go out to the family members of those who have been slain. we are going to get the bottom of is? fete through this. >> reporter: representative giffords was re-elected to a third term in november. she was sworn in on wednesday.

she asks her constituents consto stop by. she took part in the reading of the u.s. constitution on the house floor. >> congress shall make no law respecting and establishment of religions. >> she is married to captain mark kelly who is scheduled to command the last flight of the space shuttle in april. police must unravel the latest shooting rampage. >> the gunman is identified as jared loughner. among those dead are a nine-year-old child and a federal judge. abc news. >> alan: also tonight, an arizona sheriff says authoritying are investigating a suspicious package found after the shooting at gifford's tucson headquarters. the sheriff is offering few details about the situation. as mentioned earlier, federal district judge john roll is one of the dead. roll has been at the center of arizona's battle over immigration in 2009 he received

hundreds of threats after he allowed a lawsuit filed by illegal immigrants to go forward. there's no indication he was the gunman's target, and witness says the gunman fired at giffords first. june roll was appointed to the federal bench by president george h.w. bush back in 1991. >> a somber looking nancy pelosi led a moment of silence in an event in san francisco tonight. lisa amin gulezian joins us with more on that. >> lisa: it was supposed to be an annual celebration with her constituents, but it was clear, pelosi and other government leaders were having a hard time and were shaken by what happened. >> today is a very sad day for our country. >> reporter: some of the state's strongest leaders struggled to find the words to express their concern over fellow congress penn gabrielle giffords. nancy pelosi met with her cob sit opportunities today during an annual event.

the ill literacy rate in gifford's district. his myspace page ways -- was taken down immediately. >> tea party activists in tucson disagreed with giffords during her successful re-election campaign burk -- but the tea party cofounder says she does not believe there were any tea party protests at the event. she said in a statement, i want to strongly say we absolutely do not advocate violence. this is a tragedy to no end. the bay area congresswoman jackie spears says she had flashbacks today of news of the shooting unfolded. in 1978, spear was shot five times in jonestown when her fact-finding team was ambushed by members of the people's temple in guyana. her boss, congressman leo ryan was killed. amy hollyfield spoke with spear this afternoon. >> reporter: i talked to her on the phone. she is out of town.

she says she has been stoic her stomach all day in november, 1978, she was legal aide when she was shot trying to escape the jonestown massacre. her boss, leo ryan, was killed. the only congressman to ever by as senated. she freakily -- frequently puts herself out there with meetings, and even after today's shootings she will continue to do so but she says we need to make changes. >> there's so much hate that's being spewed out on the airways constantly, and we have just got to lower the level of rhetoric and create greater civility. >> reporter: spears says congresswoman gifford is is a right young star in congress who was very committed. spear says today's shooting is an assault on the democracy we hold so dear. the part about democracy is meeting with people, and she says she will continue to do that. live in the news room.

amy hollyfield, abc-7 news. >> alan: we also spoke to palo alto congresswoman anna eshu today. >> my first reaction was, oh, my god, this can't be. so but it is. and it's tragic, and i can't help but think that congresswoman giffords, gabby, who is my colleague, my friend, was doing really what is so basic to our democracy in terms of representation. she was meeting with her constituents, which is what i do, what other members do. >> alan: the shooting comes amid a highly charged political environment that has seen several dangerous threats begins lawmakers, but nothing that reached the point of actual violence. a san francisco man, upset with then-house speaker pelosi's support of healthcare reform pleaded guilty to threatening the congresswoman and her family. he called her directly on march

25th and threatened to destroy her northern california home if she voted for health care reform in july, a california man known for his anger over left, leaping politics engained in a shootout with highway patrol offers. that man said he wanted to start a revolution by killing people at the aclu and the tides foundation. the house of representatives is post poping a vote on repealing the new healthcare law because of the shooting spree. the house was scheduled to vote wednesday on repealing the healthcare law after republicans took over. eric cantor says all the legislative action is being postponed to take whatever action is needed in light of today's tragedy. oakland mayor jean quan walks through one of the toughest neighborhoods in oakland, and the san francisco supervisors have vote it for the

appoint ed lee at interim mayor until the election in november. the new board will vote on tuesday and it appears lee's appointment is a lock. seven of the supervisors who voted for him will still be on the board on tuesday. police in san jose need the public's health in finding a hit-and-run driver who struck a 15-year-old girl. police say the girl was walking across the intersection at camden and bascom avenues at 1:10 a.m. when she was hit in the crosswalk. her injuries are described as life-threatening. oaklandarch jean quan walked the toughest beat in oakland today. police beat 33x. she went door-to-door talking to residents. the neighborhood is ranked month the top five crime-ridden neighborhoods in the city. six people were shot on tuesday,

>> alan: leigh glaser is back from the holidays. what do you bring us? >> leigh: hopefully a little more snipe and -- more sunshine and warmer temperatures. here's a nice live shot, looking at at&t park. they're getting ready for the fight hunger bowl tomorrow, boston college and nevada, taking it on there, at&t park. kickoff at 6:00 tomorrow evening. and we may be able to get some of this fog out of here so you can actually see some of the ball game if you're heading there tomorrow. a nice day today. that is, santa cruz, monterey bay, that's where the sun was. elsewhere, we have been socked in the fog all day long. here's a look at current readings. san rafael, 49, 46 in san freafnls antioch, 49. 49 in san jose.

and i want to look at the viz -- visibilities. the fog is moving around. novato, over a mile visibility. check out concord, a little over -- close to two miles visible. eight miles sfo, and six miles for san jose. we continue with widespread clouds and fog tonight, a little more clearing for sunday. temperatures should come up a few more degrees. and it looks like wednesday and thursday of next week the rain will return. here was the setup today. the fog near the coast. but the problem the past few days has been the central valley fog. we have been getting those offshore winds and it's picking up the fog and pushing it towards the bay and the coast, keeping us socked in and keeping temperatures anywhere from 10 to as much as 20 degrees below where we should be this time of year. this is what's going to happen tomorrow. this is going to help us out. this cold front moves through overnight tonight.

high pressure will start to build in. but as this cold front moves through, it will have to scour out the atmosphere a little bit. so it looks like some of this fog will break up a little bit sooner, and that's why i'm banking on a little more sunshine. you can see our fogcast tomorrow morning. the front moves through, and then that mixes out. so we're looking for sunshine tomorrow and that translates to centuries coming up temperatures coming up as well. areas of dense fog, and mist and drizzle, the possible of black ice out there. napa, 34. 40 for san francisco. 32 livermore valley. highs tomorrow, a little bit more clearing. a little warmer. 53 san jose. 52 for redwood city. san francisco, clouds clouds an, 53. in the north bay, especially for san rafael, novato, you have only been in the upper --

tucson supermarket today, including arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords. giffords is in trit cal -- critical condition but is expected to survive. five other people were killed, including a nine-year-old girl and arizona's chief federal judge. president obama called it a tragedy for arizona and the entire country. police say the shooter is in custody. his exact motivation is unknown. late today, sheriffs say they're looking for a second possible suspect. the tonight the sheriff says authorities are investigating a suspicious package that was found after the shooting at gives' headquarters. i'm alan wong reporting live. and we'll have more tonight at 11:00. captioned by closed captioning services inc.
