others wound after a gunmap fired in a town hall gathering today. giffords was a figurative target of the right, and today she became the actual target of a gunman. >> reporter: we're here at the hospital where congresswoman give give giffords is being treated. she is being kept in a medically induced coma after a shooting that has stunned the nation, and members of the community are praying for the victims. >> the gunman shoot gabrielle giffords outside this supermarket point blank, and then just kept firing. >> i was three feet from her. i was shaking to my core. >> when it was over, 19 lay on the ground, gunned down, six of them killed, among them, three of giffords' staffers, a nine-year-old girl, and federal judge john roll who just came by

getting to be outrageous. >> reporter: and earlier today there was another scare for this community. police discovered a suspicious package outside of the congresswoman's office. they evacuated the area, and it turned out to be a coffee can with strange lettering. abc news. now back to you. >> alan: now, as we mentioned, six people lost their lives in tucson today. they include 63-year-old john roll, federal district court judge. he had been the target of past threats for his rulings on immigration. the youngest victim was a nine-year-old who was interested no going to thal because she was recently elected to her student council. giffords' director of community outreach was killed. gabriel simple ehrman -- simmer man, and dorothy murray, who

died along with a 37-year-old. we're learning an eye witness to the shooting was a former emergency room doctor who played dead to save his life. >> the congresswoman was talking to several people. i went to the side of the table, alongside a concrete post, and i looked up and i saw a man shoot her in the head. and then he began to spray gunfire everywhere. at that point i ducked behind the concrete post and as he came around it. the whole thing unfolded in maybe 12 or 15 seconds. as he came around it, i laid on the ground and acted as of i were shot. when i checked on her, she was actually conscious and moving her extremities and was being held up in a halfway sitting position with heir face covered. >> alan: we're learning more about the shooting suspect. jared lee loughner. a community college in few ton says -- tucson says he had five

encounters with police because of library disruptions. authorities found a youtube video about the school. he was told he needed a mental health note indicating he would not be a danger to anyone or himself. his myspace page was taken down immediately after he was named a suspect. in the bay area, local congressional colleagues were season by the news. lisa amin gulezian attended an event in san francisco where a somber-looking nancy nancy pelod a moment of silence. >> some of the state's leaders struggled to express their corn over congress person gabrielle giffords. nancy pelosi met with her constituents today during an annual event.

representatives targeted by the tea party for defeat in the last election. tonight, sarah palin's face book page still displays the crosshairs of a gun sight over districts that are vulnerable. because of the shooting spree the house of representatives is postponing the vote to repeal the new healthcare law. it's been on the top of the publican party's priority list ever since they took control of the house. the shooting comes amid a highly charged political environment that has seen several dangerous threats against lawmakers. in april, 48-year-old man pleaded guilty after threatening house speaker nancy pelosi. he called her and threatened to destroy her northern california home if she voted for healthcare reform in july, a sacramento area man known for his anger died during a shootout with

>> alan: breaking news from the south bay to report. san jose police are on the scene of a nightclub shooting that left two people dead and a third injured. police were called to the mexicali club at 8:30 where the found three men with multiple gun shot wound. two were dead at the scene, another was rush to the hospita and is expected to survive. san francisco is on the verge of having its first asian-american mayor. >> congratulations. city. 46 in san jose. inland, antioch, 38, and 41 in livermore. i want to show you our visibility. the past several nights they have been quite low, below a mile. but they're coming up a little bit. three miles in novato. 9 miles, sfo. 8 miles, san jose, 3 miles in concord and livermore. overnight we will continue to see the widespread cloudiness and pockets of dense fog, clearing tomorrow afternoon, and that's going lead to warmer temperatures, and looks like the long-range forecast is calling for rain in the bay area next week. north and east bay locations in the 30s, especially with clear pockets. watch out where the fog sits on the ground and could be talking black ice. we're still seeing the slight offshore winds picking up that

dense valley fog in the central valley and pushing it towards the bay and the coast, and this will continue tonight, although we have had a cold front start to make its way across the bay area, and this frontal system is helping to scour out some of the fog. there goes the cold front. we're now developing high pressure behind this, and as this continues, that front keeps on going on towards the east. we'll start to see less fog by tomorrow afternoon, and that's going to mean more sunshine for us, and of course warmer temperatures. in fact you can take a look at our fogcast. fog especially towards the delta, and then by late tomorrow afternoon, it should burn off quickly, and that's going to mean temperatures in the past several days in the 40s will rebound in the mid-to-low 50s tomorrow. may keep a touch of fog near the coast. 53 for san francisco tomorrow. in the north bay, temperatures
