across the country to the deadly shooting in tucson, arizona. six people killed, including a federal judge and 13 others were injured among them. an arizona congresswoman, gabrielle giffords. local representatives are expressing their shock and sadness. what they have to say about the attack and the constant threat of violence. >> good morning. a dry start for your sunday but fog in the north bay's getting quite dense. we have it all throughout the bay area. numbers in the 30s in our north and eastern valleys. >> arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords is fighting for her life this morning after that shooting rampage in tucson yesterday. six people were killed and 13 others injured after a gunman opened fire at a town hall gathering in front of a supermarket. police are trying to figure out what led to the shooting and to local a possible second suspect. diana has the latest from tucson. >> shock has given way to sadness in arizona. over a senseless mass shooting

that killed six and injured more than a dozen others. shot at point blank range, congresswoman gabrielle giffords is in a medically induced coma. some say she's a fighter. >> she's fearless. truly fearless. always more concerned about the welfare of others than she is about her own welfare. and she's just a great human being. >> judge john roll died at the scene as did three of giffords' constituents and a staff member. nine-year-old christina green died at the hospital. born september 11th, 2001, she'd come to meet her congresswoman having just been elected to her student council, christina wanted to learn about politics. the man responsible for the massacre is 22-year-old jared lee loughner. he was kicked out of college for videos on youtube.com. classmates say he was a troubled young man. >> the bottom line is i don't

think he had the skills to do that. i don't think he ever learned how to engage with the world socially and emotionally. >> loughner is in the custody of the f.b.i. authorities have not yet determined a motive and are searching for a possible accomplice. seen here on still from surveillance video. after giffords' surgery, doctors say they were optimistic about her chances for recovery. her friends are having a tougher time being positive. >> i'm very hopeful for her but i have to tell you when i look at the tv and i see her picture, i get very emotional about it. it's a real hard thing to deal with. >> authorities have released new information about this possible accomplice. he's described as a white male between the ages of 40 and 50 years old. they're asking anyone who has any information to please come forward. abc news, tucson, arizona. >> doctors are saying that giffords' outlook is optimistic

and she is responding to commands from doctors. six people were killed. they include 63-year-old john roll, a federal district court judge. he had been the target of past threats for his rulings on immigration. the youngest victim is nine-year-old christina green who was interested in going to the rally because she was recently elected to her student council. gifford, a director of community outreach, gabriel zimmerman was engaged to be married. the other victims, 76 years old dorwin stoddard and 76-year-old dorothy murphy died along with 79-year-old phyllis shek. an eyewitness was an emergency room doctor who played dead to save his own life. >> i passed by the table. the congresswoman was talking to several people. i went to the side of the table, the side of the concrete post. and i looked up, and i saw a man

shoot her in the head. and then he began spraying gunfire everywhere. at that point i ducked behind the concrete post, and as he came around it, the whole thing unfolded in maybe 12, 15 seconds. as he came around it, i laid on the ground and acted as if i was shot. when i checked on her, she was actually conscious and moving her extremities and sitting -- was being held up in a halfway sitting position with her face covered. >> some of california's most prominent leaders are shocked over the shooting of fellow congresswoman gabrielle giffords. democratic leader nancy pelosi met with her constituents during an annual event yesterday. she was joined by an east bay congressman as they led a moment of silence for their colleague. >> our prayers and thoughts are with all of them, all of their families. congresswoman giffords is a great patriotic american. >> obviously there's a risk and

she's paid a huge price to answer questions, not hide back in some room someplace with a photo op and a sound byte. >> security at pelosi's event was noticeably tight but when he met with us he was accompanied by one aide. learning more about the shooting suspect, jared lee loughner. said to have five encounters with police for classroom and library disruption. he was suspended after authorities found a youtube.com video of him lashing out at the school. to return police told laugh ford he needed a mental health note indicating he would not be a danger to himself or anyone else. he included a message saying good-bye, friends, please don't be mad at me. the page was taken down immediately after he was named as a suspect. congresswoman giffords had just

started her third term. she is a moderate democratic from a largely republican district. she is as familiar with anyone of the partisan divide but politicians on both sides of the aisle are condemning the attack. >> gabrielle giffords was most recently heard on the house floor as one of those reading aloud the constitution. >> congress shall make no law reexpecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof or prohibiting freedom of speech. >> franks is a fellow representative. >> incredibly ironic she was out there practicing the first amendment, being part of free speech and she was shot. gabriel giffords was going out practicing that amendment right she had when some bastard shot her down. and i think it's a tragedy again. >> reacting to the shooting, speaker of the house john boehner said in a written statement, an attack on one who serves is an attack on all who

serves. our prayers are with congresswoman giffords, her staff, all injured and their families. this is a sad day for our country. from minority leader nancy pelosi... >> we stand before you with the deepest sadness for the act of violence that was committed against our colleague congresswoman gabby giffords, her staff, her constituents, and now we know a federal judge as well. >> congresswoman joe crowley is one of many in congress who consider giffords a close friend. >> i know. always been a very contentious state, quite frankly over the last year or so with immigration at the forefront. but gabby has been a fighter. she's spoken out against the administration when she thinks they're wrong. >> giffords just won re-election in a hard-fought campaign winning despite one of the top targets for defeat. she was on sarah palin's list. she faced anger to opposition over arizona's immigration law,

immigration not surprisingly one of the hottest issues in her district which shares a border with mexico. >> the shooting comes amid a highly charged political environment which has seen several dangerous threats against lawmakers. last april 48-year-old juicety pleaded guilty after threatening nancy pelosi. he called her and threatened to destroy her northern california home if she voted for healthcare reform. a heavily armed sacramento area man known for his left leading politicians was wounded during a shoutout with chp. williams planned to attack the aclu and another social justice nonprofit called the tide foundation. because of the shooting spree, the house of representatives is postponing wednesday's scheduled vote to repeal the new healthcare law. it has been on top of the republican party's priority list ever since they took control of the house. still ahead this morning, san

grapefruit. >> grapefruit. >> grapefruit! >> thanks to the group, the students now have an excellent source of knowledge. richmond, lee ann melendez, abc 7 news. >> all right. good job. we have an excellent source of fog right now for the time being. >> we have. it hasn't budged for like the past several days. but south bay was sunny, san francisco is sunny and we have a little more wind this morning. and a weak weather system that is pushing on through to hopefully erode some of that cold air, that damp cold air that's locked in across the bay area. here's the airport. and we're looking at cool conditions here at about 40 degrees. you got into some sunshine yesterday at about 1:00. and a roof camera shows a little bit of that north wind, just about 10 mph here downtown. and that's what we're hoping for, more of a north/northwest wind to scour out that cold, damp fog that's been pretty

persistent, although it could be worse. central valley really hadn't seen sunshine in much longer. we've enjoyed a few nice days. looking at low 40s mountain view, san jose. 41 los gatos and with the cool air and that light wind, we're getting that deep, damp east wind coming in from the valley so that tulie fog persisting throughout the delta, concord and livermore with numbers just in the 30s. it feels like it's in the low 30s though. so cold one for you. 36 santa rosa. good morning, san rafael. 39 for you. here's a look at those winds, calm. that's why i've got the visibility down to about a quarter mile santa rosa, novato. you're looking at the fog. here's the east wind in napa and the northeast wind allowing for more of that fog to move on through. but the north wind in oakland hopefully we can keep that up over the next couple hours. we'll look for some clearing around the bay. it will be in the afternoon though. here are highlights then. watch for low clouds and fog with the light clearing and temperatures hopefully coming

out of those 40s today. chance of showers comes in on tuesday. looks like a weak system and another one to follow. and yesterday it looked like we were going to see some pretty strong systems by the end of the week. now forecast models are backing off on that. looks like just a little rain coming our way midweek. valley fog, coastal fog throughout the bay today. with that north wind, the front has moved on through. it's not going to be strong enough to scour out the fog in the central valley or much of our east bay valleys. but i think in the north bay, the peninsula and the south bay, also by monterey, should be looking at a fairly decent day, today tomorrow before high clouds begin to stream in in advance of our next storm system. it's a weak one up to the north. so we'll enjoy the dry conditions today and tomorrow with this ridge of high pressure protecting us and the storm track still pretty far away. take you through the next couple of days and the fog stays put

here in the central valley, the san joaquin valley, clearing around the bay. look what happens monday. looking at higher clouds screaming in ahead of the next system. 9:00 monday night still dry. lots of clouds around. but by tuesday morning, the commute and later on in the day looks like we're going to look at light rain showers across the bay area. into sacramento. that also should help with that aversion and bring better visibility throughout the afternoon in between the next system that's slated for wednesday. 52 santa clara today and milpitas. peninsula numbers ranging from the low 50s in millbrae, pacifica 51. san francisco coming in at 53 today, partly cloudy. numbers more mild the further north you get. 56 ukiah with 52 berkeley. still cool our east bay valleys. brentwood 47 and down by the monterey bay, looking at mid-50s, mild and sunniest weather there. so a couple of dry days, chance

gabrielle giffords still fighting for her life this morning after the shooting rampage in tucson yesterday. six people killed and 13 others injured after a gunman opened fire in front of a supermarket. we're now learning more about that suspected gunman who left a trail of videos and postings on the internet alluding to future plans. the justice department and the f.b.i. have now joined the arizona officials in this investigation. pierre thomas has more on the story. >> the suspect is identified as 22-year-old jared lee log ner. his myspace.com page suggests he was preparing for a vie least onslaught. he posted a message entitled good-bye, friends. it begins dear friends, please don'ts be mad at me. he was obsessed with violence and apparently angry at the government. look at this youtube.com posting. it's one of his favorites. let the body hit the floor. in this video a u.s. flag is

burned. another youtube.com posting loughner writes he appears paranoid suggesting the government was monitoring his communications. i know who's listening he wrote. he discusses mind control and brain wash methods. the weapon was a semiautomatic pistol with an extended clip. the f.b.i. has begun to dissect his background and look for any possible accomplices. >> a comprehensive investigation is currently underway. and at my direction, director bob muller is en route to arizona to help coordinate these efforts. >> u.s. capitol police are also assisting in the investigation and plans were underway to step up security for congressional leaders. >> the shooting brings up the serious issue of security for politicians who have to interact with their constituents. amy hollyfield spoke with three local members of congress, including congresswoman jackie spear who said she has

flashbacks after hearing the news. >> jackie spear was 28 years old when she witnessed the killing of her boss, leo ryan in 1978. he the is only congressman to be assassinated in u.s. history. spear was also shot in the attack by members of the people's temple in guyana. that horrific day was on her mind when she heard of the shooting of congresswoman gabrielle giffords. >> just sick to my stomach and in total disbelief. the more we've heard, the more anxious i became. >> but spear and other representatives we spoke with aren't willing to stop appearing in public in the name of safety. instead, the point that kept coming up today was the tone of the country. >> there's so much hate and mol leave lance spewed out on the airwaves constantly. and we've just gotta lower the level of rhetoric. >> the motive behind today's shooting is still unknown and public officials don't want to

jump to conclusions but the shootings have drawn attention to the heated political arguments taking place across the country. >> if it's any kind of political rhetoric that has given this individual somehow permission to go forward and think that this is all right, then i think that we need to examine that. >> congressman mike thompson of napa says a couple of his town hall meetings over healthcare turned ugly this past year. he says the level of anger he's seen has made him uncomfortable. >> i think notwithstanding what happened, the level of discourse didn't change in this country. it makes it near prohibitive to get the work of the people done. >> the representatives we spoke with say gabrielle giffords is very committed to doing the work of the people. they call the attack on her an assault on democracy. >> it's a very, very sad day. and i can't pretend and say that this isn't unsettling to me

because it is. it's very -- it's highly unsettling. >> giffords has received threats and even had the windows of her arizona office shattered. but the bay area representatives we spoke to say they aren't surprised she was out there today standing in front of the shopping center talking to the voters. she was very dedicated to doing what's right for her her constituents. amy hollyfield. >> a former f.b.i. agent in san francisco says the only way to have possibly prevented an attack like this is if the shooter had made threats against the congresswoman and that threat had been investigated. >> i don't think you can change the entire methodology of a congressperson speaking to her constituents. you can't do that. these people want to get out there. they want to talk to people. they need votes when it's election time. i don't think you change that fundamentally. you just have to investigate these things individually. >> representative giffords has

been now thrust into the spotlight. david curly has more on her story and transition into politics. >> just 40 years old, giffords started her third term in the house this week. >> and in november remember going to take back our community. we're going to take back our district, our state, our governments for the people, for the working people. >> after running her family's tire business in tucson, gabby as her friends call her jumped into politics and she's not afraid to take on her fellow democrats including the president on border control, an important issue in her district. >> we want to make sure that the president of the united states understands and hears the plight of the people directly affected by the federal government's inability to secure our u.s./mexico border. >> during a trip to china in 2007, she met the fighter pilot astronaut mark kellie and they married. >> very vibrant, always moving, always doing something. she and mark are probably one of the most popular couples on

capitol hill. >> mark kel less a brother scott is in space right now. he was notified of the shooting from a private phone call in houston. i talked to the twins really expected to be the first blood relatives in space together. he said what to bring his brother. >> underwear runs pretty well in the space station. he says don't use all your underwear. when you undock, keep some of it. >> giffords was among the representatives targeted by the tea party for defeat in the last election. sarah palin's facebook.com page still displays a map showing the cross hairs of a gun sight over the districts that were targeted as vulnerable. palin has offered her sincere condolences to giffords' family and other shooting victims. san francisco is on the verge of having its first asian american mayor. (applause) >> yesterday new members of the board of supervisors were sworn in and they immediately reelected david chew as board president. on friday the outgoing board

voted 10-1 to appoint city administrator ed lee as the interim mayor until november. he's expected to be voted in by the new board of supervisors this tuesday. oakland mayor jean quan hit the streets going door to door talking about the toughest beat in oakland, beat 33-x. the neighborhood has seen a surge in violence lately. 33-x is the focus of crime reduction and rejuvenation plan. there have been 1500 arrests in the neighborhood the last five years. the unemployment rate for young men is 28%. quan wants neighbors to get involved in making the streets safer. she's asking them to join a new neighborhood crime prevention council. >> what do you make of it? >> i loved it. >> it's a beautiful thing because she interacted with the people in the neighborhood and inner city which is a beautiful thing. i like her. i like her already. >> quan also encouraged neighbors to come out for an event to clean up the streets of oakland next weekend in observance of the martin luther king federal holiday.

growing epidemic. too much of a good thing. here's ron clayborne. >> ever since the 1940s, fluoride has been artificially added to drinking water to help fight tooth dekrey reducing cavities up to 50%. there were critics who complained about injecting a chemical into drinking water. a satire of the 1960s movie dr. strange love. >> do you realize fluoridation is the most dangerous communist plot we have ever had to face. >> now the federal government reduces to protect children. it affects as many as a third of american children. >> making this adjustment now will promote public health, improve oral health and reduce rates of the disease. ♪ >> for years fluoride has been

added to toothpaste and is in other products we eat and drink. americans are now ingesting too much fluoride. its new recommendation, no more than 4.7 milligrams for every liter of drinking water down from 2.3 milligrams a liter. minnesota and many others who is water has high amounts of fluoride would have to reduce them to meet the new target. dr. cole says he treated severe cases of the disease in children. >> you have to treat them with crowns or new facings and it can become very costly. >> even the national research council whose 2006 report was cited today by the epa linked it to bone damage and risk of fractures. there's no evidence fluoride causes serious illness but potentially serious damage to children's teeth. >> that was ron clayborne

already in advance of a weak weather system that should bring us some rain by tuesday. 38 napa. good morning, fairfield. 36 for you. it's 40 san francisco. airport delays of 40 minutes already at sfo. 43 in san jose and the livermore valley, 38. visibility down to about a half to a quarter of a mile in santa rosa. so once again some pretty dense fog there. the breezyiest spot i could find was oakland with a north wind at 10 mph. elsewhere still evecting that tulie fog on that northeast wind and the calm winds allowing for that fog up in marin county. mountain view a light north wind at 6. widespread clouds and fog this morning. late clearing this afternoon and a chance of showers comes our way tuesday. another one i think on wednesday but the forecast models scaling back on the rain for the middle of the week.

so far season to date santa rosa with nearly 20 inches of rain, 138% of normal. san francisco at 139% of normal. oakland 10.5 inches of rain with well above normal rainfall for you. about 93%. doing pretty good in san jose with about 5.33 inches of rain. the setup this, a weak front pushes through. the wind scouring out that cold, damp air trapped at the surface. that's the plan for today. we should see some partly sunny skies and temperatures coming up out of that 40 degree range. enjoy that. we'll have the fog once again in the valley but then in advance of the next system, here's the high cloudiness streaming in out ahead of it. so we'll see some clouds tomorrow and then rain moving in by early morning on tuesday. high temperatures across the state, low 40s in the southern sierra with 34 in the northern sierra. fresno just at about 40 degrees today. a cool day there.

accu-weather forecast. >> some pretty nice pictures out there from high above and also from the sierra nevada. looking at some snow out there. haven't seen any new snow in a while. but at least we'll see some sun today. it's been sort of hit or miss with the fog there and some afternoon sun and temperatures right now truckee minus 2 with haze, pretty cool. mount tam high above 13,000 foot aversion. that's where we have the clearing. hopefully we can scour off this damp fog layer and we'll notice the sunshine later on this afternoon. so emeryville right now kind of cool in the 40s. a north wind there though allowing for things to get mixed out hopefully throughout the day today. temperatures around the bay are cool in the 40s with just 36 santa rosa. fog at about a quarter of a mile there so do be careful. windchill factor throughout our north and east bay valleys. feeling like it's about freezing. so keep that in mind as you head out for a bike ride this morning.
