the 14 survivors shot saturday, giffords remains in critical condition. a dozen others are at university medical center are in tucson. six victims lost their lives, including federal judge john roll, giffords' aide, and nine-year-old kristina taylor greene who was elected to her school student council and wanted to meet the congresswoman. >> comes into the world on 9/11, and then at nine years old she leaves it on this terrible day. >> the suspect remains in fbi cuffed -- custody. according to authorities, loughner bought the murder weapon, glock mine millimeter handgun last year in the sportsmon center in tucson. he was stopped when bystanders intervaccined when he was

reloading. >> farm -- fortunately the spring in the magazine field, and the two gentlemen were able to subdue him. >> reporter: authorities had been looking for a person of interest who they thought may have helped loughner with the shootings. turns out he was a cab driver who dropped loughner off but had no idea what was about to happen. >> alan: now, among those who stepped up to help was 20-year-old man who started his internship with the congresswoman two weeks ago. >> if you could hear me, god, let me know you're okay. so it was just communication that she was doing by grabbing my hand and acknowledging she could hear me. >> alan: hernandez used a clean butcher smock from the grocery store and accompanied giffords to the hospital.

one local trauma surgeon points out the methods used to treat giffords are the same ones used on soldiers. >> we're with traumatic injury the same way we were with cancer. with aggressive treatment of these patients we're seeing here at san francisco general hospital, patients that have recoveries we wouldn't have dreamed possible ten years ago. >> alan: he heads san francisco general hospital's neurosurgery department and knows the surgeons who operated on giffords yesterday. dr. manley emphasized few son's level one trauma center and its talented staff that he said saved lives yesterday. congresswoman giffords recently addressed threats against her. and now lawmakers on both sides of the aisle say the political rhetoric has gotten out of hand. we have more on that part of the story. >> tone down the political rhetoric. what does that mean?

>> the shooting in arizona lit up conservative talk show air waves this afternoon. but as there are calls around the nation for a toned down rhetoric, barbara simpson says the far right is not to blame and what is rhetoric to some is point to others. >> do people say things they shouldn't say? >> yeah, they do. and each person is responsible for their own. but some of the called i got and i'm sure other people will get, you right-wingers all say something, and i say, i'm only responsible for the words that come out of my mouth. >> reporter: the official reason for the shooting that left six dead and a lawmaker clinging to life remain unknown, but many say what happened in arizona raises questions about the tone of political discourse in the country. >> the right are doing more than the left but there's still plenty on the left as well. >> reporter: the dean of the goldman school of public policy says the media with rage-filled cable talk show and radio programs bears some

responsibility. >> just because somebody disagrees with you doesn't mean they're evil. just means they disagree with you. >> we support wikileaks. >> reporter: this group of protestors outside senator fine feinstein's door were louder than large. the police were nearby. >> the shootings have just been a terrible reminder that we have to deal with our political differences in a way that is civil and peaceful. >> reporter: some politicians and political analysts are talking about possible ties between the gunman and the tea party or other conservatives. but so far there isn't any evidence of a political connection. >> alan: today president obama called on americans to honor the victims of arizona's tragedy. he is asking everyone to observe

been san san francisco's police chief for 18 months, was sworn in as san francisco's district attorney. the ceremony took place this afternoon. gascon is san francisco's first latino da. he replaces kamala harris who is now the state attorney general. the mayor says appointing gascon was his last decision as mayor and he is confident it will be one of his betts decisions as mayor. gascon has a law degree. only practiced law for a year and a half but his inexperience as a lawyer doesn't matter. >> running the office is like running a police department to driving a black and white. i have the understanding of the criminal justice system not only today but where we need to be in the future, and i believe i'm uniquely qualified to bring the two together.

>> it was a surprise. i think even to chief gascon, now our district attorney. but it's going to be interesting to see how chief gascon transforms into the district attorney. it's a very different job. as district attorney you decide which cases that are brought bought by the police to the da's office should be charged. >> reporter: as to who will run the police department, assistant chief godown is now acting chief. it's up to the mayor to decide who will take that position permanently. >> alan: and as lillian noted. george gascon has little experience in the courtroom. however, he is a graduate of western state university school of law in fullerton and has been a licensed attorney in california since 1996. his appointment adds a new twist to the relationship between the da's office and the police department which had become

strained. tomorrow, newsom will be sworn in as lieutenant governor at the state capital. the oath of office will be administered by his father, a former appellate court justice. after the ceremony, his family will host a reception, and then on tuesday the san francisco board of supervisors will take a final vote on the appointment of ed lee. who will fill the remaining year of newsom's term. >> governor jerry brown will unveil the new budget proposal. he has offered few specifics how he will try to close the 28 bill budget deficit. brown has warned into groups. lawmakers about deep spending cuts and may include ask the voters to extend sales and

night club and the death of another man in the area. it was at the mexicali night club at 8:30 last night. police home someone can help find three or four mean who were seen leaving the nightclub. this morning officers discovered the body of a fourth man shot inside an suv on 12th street a few blocks from the nightclub. >> this has been a very unusual, out of the ordinary, violent weekend for us. we will aggressively investigate these cases. we do believe that this is out of the norm. >> alan: in san jose, police also need your help capturing a hit and drunk driver who -- hit-and-run driver who injured a girl. the girl was in the crosswalk with her boyfriend saturday morning when she was hit by a gray or silver japanese model car. mountain view police are looking for man they say attacked a woman on the street

in a residential area. the 27-year-old victim says a man dragged her 20 feet into an empty dirt lot and punched her in the face. she screamed for help and the suspect let her go and then fled south. the woman was treated at the hospital for minor injuries. the suspect is described as a latino male in his 20s with short black hair, between 58 and the 5'10", with a husky build and was wearing a dark jacket. if you have any information, employs -- please contact the mountain view police. >> two years before the san bruno explosion, pg&e briefly raised the pressure on its doomed gas pipeline to its mask legal level, according to the san francisco chronicle, which reported it increased the pressure for two hours in 2008.

delta. some of that could freeze on the pavement so look out for black ice overnight. a mostly sunny day for monday, and the clouds thicken monday night, leading to showers returning to at the bay area on tuesday. a nice day today. high pressure building in, bringing us drier air mass. so nice clearing today. and here's a look at the overnight temperatures. in the 20s in the north bay. santa rosa, 29. cloverdale, 27. 30 for napa. 42, san francisco. 30 for livermore, and 34 for antioch. so definitely much tolder air mass over us. here's the setup. high pressure building in. we had a cold front move through overnight that helped us scour the fog, push it back in towards the central valley area. so expect sunshine tomorrow. temperatures will nudge up a few more degrees, and then tuesday -- monday night, this
