subway big hot pastrami. crank up the flavor at subway. ambulance. there is more than one person down. >> did you say gabrielle gifford is hurt? >> she is breathing and she still has a pulse. there were multiple people shot. >> that's the 9-1-1 call after 20 people were gunned down in front of a tucson supermarket on saturday. among them, congresswoman gabrielle gifford who is holding her own. >> just the fact she has survived and is able to respond to our command is miraculous. >> the suspect is described as pot-smoking loner is charged

with trying to assassinate a congresswoman. we are now learning more about the heroes and victims. here is t.j. winick. >> reporter: the candles and the prayers are for those lost during saturday's horrific tragedy and for those fighting for their lives. >> it is shocking. it has been surreal. >> did you say gabrielle giffords was hit? >> reporter: she is in a medically-enduced coma. her long-term prognosis is unclear. 9-1-1 tapes released and a picture of the chaos in the shooting. >> we have one person down. there were multiple people shot. >> oh my god. >> reporter: gifford's 20-year-old intern used his hands to apply pressure to the gunshot wound to her head while holding her in his lab. >> i said, gabby, you are still with us. just grab my happened and hold tight.

she squeezed my hand. >> reporter: of the 14 survivors, giffords remains in critical condition and dozens of others are in the hospital in tucson. six victims lost their lives including kristina taylor green who was born on september 11th, 2001. >> she comes into the world on 9/11 and at nine years old she leaves on this terrible day. >> reporter: the suspect, 22-year-old jarrod leigh lofner is in fbi custody as they probe questions to extremist groups. he was only stopped by killing more when bystanders wrestled him to the ground as he was trying to reload. >> he was pulling a magazine out of his pant pocket with his left land and i was -- hand and i was able to grab the magazine. >> reporter: president obama called for a national moment of silence at 11:00 a.m. eastern time for those who were killed and those

survivors still in the hospital. >> the suspect will make his first court appearance tomorrow afternoon before a federal judge in phoenix. during a search of his parents' home, the fbi recovered several items including a safe. the safe contained a letter on gifford's station neither re-- station -- stationery thanks him for attending a fundraising effort. and a letter saying i planned ahead. the public defender in arizona is asking the judge to a point the same lawyer who convicted timothy mcveigh to represent laffner. several people stepped up and stopped the suspect from hurting more people. the local sheriff credits this woman with likely saving dozens of lives. two men tackled him while she tried to pry the gun from his hand. >> the gun was in his right hand and he was secured with

his right side against the sidewalk. i was not able to reach the gun, but he was pulling a magazine out of his pant pocket with his left hand and i was able to grab the magazine. somebody said when he pulled that up they said get the magazine. so i got the magazine and was able to secure that. >> she lined up with others to greet giffords. doctors praised daniel hernandez for helping stop the congresswoman's bleeding during the chaos. it was his first week on-the-jo. tonight giffords is in a medically enduced coma and her doctors call her condition still precarious. surgeons removed part of her skull to help her recover. >> it is like any other injury you have swelling that happens after the injury. what they have done is they have essentially removed a large portion of bone to allow the brain to swell.

>> he heads the neurosurgeon redepartment at san francisco general hospital. he points out that getting victims to a level one trauma center like the one where giffords is being treated plays a vital role to increase chances of survival. the bay area has three level one trauma centers. san francisco general, stanford medical center and san jose's valley medical center. the shooting in arizona has members of congress on both sides of the aisle calling for an end to heated political rhetoric. but as abc7's cecilia vega reports, it is still too early to blame rhetoric on this tragedy. >> we have to tone down the political rhetoric. what does that really mean? >> the shooting in arizona lit up the conservative talk shows this afternoon. but as there are calls around the nation for a toned down rhetoric, barbara simpson says what is ret for i can rick to some is not others.

>> each person is responsible for their own. some of the calls i got and i'm sure other people on the air will be new right wingers saying something. i said i am only responsible for the words that come out of my mouth. >> the official reason for the shooting that left six dead and a lawmaker clinging to life remains unknown. but many say what happened in arizona raises questions about the tone of political discourse in the country. >> seems the right is doing more than the left. but there is plenty on the left as well. >> they say the media with rage-filled cable talk shows and radio programs bears some responsibility. >> just because somebody disagrees with you doesn't mean they are evil. it just means they disagree with you. this group of code pink demonstrators outside dianne feinstein's front door was louder that is twain large.

but san francisco police were on scene anyway. the fact that feinstein wasn't home didn't matter much. they say the arizona shooting shows it is time for the tone of the nation's debate to change. >> the shootings have been a terrible reminder that we have to deal with our political differences in a way that is civil and peaceful. >> some politicians and political analysts have talked about ties between the gunman and the tea party or other conservatives. but so far there is no connection between a political connection. cecilia vega, abc7 news. and president obama is calling on all-americans to observe a moment of silence to honor the victims tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. pacific time. the president signed the problem law lags for all flags to be flown at half staff. in what could be his final act as san francisco's mayor gavin newsom made a surprise appointment today and turned his police chief into the new

district attorney. abc7's lilian kim is live at city hall. and lilian, this even came as a surprise to gascone himself. >> that's right. he emerged as a contender just yesterday. that's when a one-on-one conversation with the mayor changed everything. >> as district attorney -- >> as district attorney. >> for the city and county of san francisco. >> for the city and county of san francisco. >> congratulations. >> he was sworn in as san francisco's district tone one day after he was offered the job. he didn't even seek the position. mayor gavin newsom says gascone emersed as his pick after talking about the quality he would like to see in a new d.a. >> as i was listening to him, it became clear to me that he was the choice. he didn't know that. he was giving me some good advice. he didn't know how good the advice was. >> gascone replaces harris.

unlike harris, gascone believes in the death penalty. >> we will be seeking the death penalty. when we have the evidence and all of the circumstances in the case we will seek so. >> gascone served as police chief for a year and a half and san francisco has seen the violent crime rate dip to the lowest level since the 1960s. the biggest question, will he be just as effective as d.a.? >> it will be interesting to see how chief gascone transforms into the district attorney. it is a very different job. as district attorney he will have the responsibility of deciding when cases that are brought by the police to the d.a.'s office should be charged. >> gascone holds a law degree from western state university, but he only practiced law for a year and a half. gascone says it does president matter. -- it doesn't matter. >> it is like running a police department.

it is different skill sets and i believe i have the skills. >> the assistant chief, a gascone confident will serve as acting police until the new chief is chosen. one more note, today's appointment makes gascone the first latino district attorney. live in san francisco, lilian kim, abc7 news. >> thanks, lilian. and tomorrow at 1:00, gavin newsom will be sworn in as lieutenant governor. the oath of office will be add stirred by his father, william newsom. he is a former california appellate court justice. on tuesday, the san francisco board of supervisors will take a final vote on the appointment of ed leigh as interim mayor. he will fill the remaining year of newsom's term. and there is a report that pg&e matched the pipeline that blew up in september.

...to crescent pose. chase what matters. just four more times. ♪ >> closed captioning brought to >> closed captioning brought to san jose police think there may be a link between the murders of two men at a nightclub and another man shot to death in the same area. two men were shot at the mexicali club on north 13th around 8:30 last night. this morning officers disscousered -- discovered the body of another man a few block usa way from the nightclub. he was also shot to death. this has been an unusual out of the ordinary, violent weekend for us. we will aggressively investigate these cases. we do believe this is out of the norm. >> sap jose police are also looking for a hit-and-run

driver who critically injured a 15-year-old girl at south bascom. the girl was in the crosswalk with her boyfriend early saturday morning when she was hit by a gray or silver japanese model car. two years before the san bruno explosion that took eight lives, pg&e raised the pressure on the doomed natural gas pipeline to maximize its legal level. the san francisco chronicle is reporting that the utility increase the pressure to 400 pounds per square inch for two hours in less of -- in december of 2008. experts call it a huge gamble. they say a sharp spike in pressure could make it more vulnerable to failure later on. pg&e says it is the company's standard operating practice to run the gas line at the maximum pressure once every five years. technology insiders are reporting that cell phone carrier verizon is about to make a major announcement and

there are reports that apple's chief executive officer, steve jobs, will be there. they say the media event will announce the verizon-compatible iphone. apple insiders say the iphone will go on sale thursday february 3rd. iphone users long complained of the spotty at&t coverage exclusive to the iphone. today marks the close of the 2011 consumer electronics show in las vegas. and this year more new tab let computers were introduced than any other product category. richard hart reports on the drive to discover a worthy competetor to the ipad. >> touchy touchy, multi touchy. at the 2011 consumer electronic show, you can lay your hands on the different tablets vying for the apple ipad. while technically you can't lay your hands on half of them until later this year, motorola has the top contender

area on tuesday. here are expected lows. 28 santa rosa and 29 napa. that's the inland valley frost. 32 san rafael and35 oakland and 28 for livermore and 29 expected tonight in the antioch area. this is pretty much the set up for today. and it will go right on through monday the high pressure has scoured out all of the fog and bringing down a cooler air mass. the high pressure stays with us for one more day. expect sunshine. as we head into tomorrow night and tuesday, this high will push toward the east. that will allow the clouds from the next cold front to thicken on monday night. showers will return to the bay area on tuesday. in fact. we will take you through the evening. clear skies and a little fog here and there. but nothing we have had to deal with the past several days. you can see the clouds thicken by tomorrow night. by tuesday morning, that's when the showers will start to move. and you will notice that most of the rain activity to the

north of the golden gate bridge. so clearly the storm track is trying to move north. it looks like thursday, friday to saturday, if we have more rain it could stay to the north of the bay area. we'll keep you updated on that. temperatures a few degrees warmer. low 50s for half moon bay. 54 for palo alto. you notice in the afternoon hours the high clouds moving in. 53 for san francisco, santa rosa 53. 52 for napa and 54 for oakland and newark will climb to 52. a cold start tomorrow for antioch and brentwood. not a lot of warming for you tomorrow afternoon. 51 for antioch and we will go 56 for santa cruz. my accu-weather seven-day forecast, a nice day for monday and the showers return to the bay area on tuesday. we get a break on wednesday, and then the next chance for rain will be thursday, friday or saturday.
