front of our studios a year ago. everyone came out to celebrate his birthday. lelanne was born in san francisco in 1914. 22 years later he opened his first health club in oakland, becoming a pioneer in body building, weight lifting and proper nutrition decades before it wasen en vogue. he held noon exercise classes in the studio. >> one, two, three, four. >> reporter: and when the show was syndicated out of hollywood, he became a national icon. the show stayed on the air through the 1970s. >> i tell the truth and i practice what i preach. >> he designed and invented strength machines still widely used in the fitness industry. and by the 1980s he had his name on more than 200 health clubs. but he was also known for his amazing feats of strength. when he was 40 he swam from alcatraz to the shore

handcuffed. when he turned 60 he swam the bay again, towing a boat loaded with a half ton of weights. >> anything you do in life that is beneficial and meaningful, it takes effort. if you can't afford a half an hour three or four times a week taking care of the most priceless possession, your body, you have to be sick. you are stupid. >> workers at john's grill say they will miss lelanne. he and his wife were regulars here. and there was a salad named in his honor. sandra remembers his words of wisdom. >> keep active and always keep happy. he said that is the secret to a long life. >> lelanne did practice what he preached. when he spoke to him at his 95th birthday he said he worked out two hours a day and weight lifting for 90 minutes and swimming for a half hour. alan? >> thank you, lilian. a shootout this evening in washington state killed two people and seriously injured two sheriff deputies. it happened outside a wal-mart in the town of port orchard

about 15 miles west of seattle after a customer reported a suspicious person at the store. police tried to talk to the man, but he took off shooting the gun as he ran. deputies fired back killing the gunman. a young woman in the parking lot was hit by a stray bullet, and she died at the hospital. investigators still don't know why the man ran and began firing. and there is no telling what could have been thwarted after a uc davis student was caught with two loaded weapons in his truck. a family member told police 25-year-old nicholas benson was suicidal and armed. police also say benson threatened to kill others after trying to negotiate with him on his cell phone police were able to spot him in his pick up truck parked in downtown davis. police found a semiautomatic rifle with an extended am mow clip -- ammo clip and shotgun in his truck. >> each magazine carries approximately 30 rounds of

rifle ammunition. those were all loaded at the time. >> benson was arrested on suspicion of making terrorist threats and carrying aked loed weapon in public, resisting an officer and possession of an illegal assault weapon. his bail is set at $1 million. the search for a kidnapped four-year-old boy will resume tomorrow in stanislaus county. so far divers have recovered five vehicles from the canal near patterson, but none matched in the kidnapping of juliani. a silver toyota corolla, last tuesday a man saw a vehicle with that description drive into the canal with two people inside. investigators say there were fresh tire tracks leading into the water. police say jose esteban rodriguez snatched the boy from his grandmother last tuesday. what was once a statewide amber alert is now confined to the central valley and san jose. a cruiseship blamed for turning a dream vacation into a nightmare is now in san francisco for repairs.

park. two school police officers pulled up behind a honda and pushed a man and woman sitting inside. police say the man pulled out a screwdriver and attacked one of the officers. >> one of the occupants stabbed one of our police officers with the tool. fortunately the officer was not injured because he was wearing a protective vest. at this time there was a gun in the car and another officer shot the occupant of the car. >> the officers are on paid administrative leave which is standard procedure. the woman in the car was not hurt, but she was teaken to the hospital for -- was taken to the hospital for observation. the oakland police department and the district attorney's office are all investigating the incident. >> the on going violence is what lead an organized march today. residents encouraged others to get more involved in making their neighborhood safer. abc7's mark matthews reports from high street, the scene of oakland's first murder of the year.

>> marchers gathered outside the apartment building where a 19-year-old was gunned down just nine minutes into the new year. the theme of sunday's march was take back the streets block by block. >> people see we are doing something and eventually they become involved if they want to make a change. >> sheila turner's husband, preston, helped organize the march. >> letting the neighbors know that we have options, we have services and together hand in hand we can turn oakland around. >> marchers picked up trash and handed out leaflets and told people to get involved with their community. >> oakland police. >> but on martin luther king, boulevard few people were willing to say they would do anything to help the police. in a recent survey, 40% of oakland residents said they distrusted police.

business. abc7 will broadcast the speech this tuesday at 6:00. it will be streamed live on abc7news.com. military planes are quickly evolving, and tonight abc news aired an exclusive look at a new unmanned spy plane. the global observer is being tested at edwards air force base. it can fly 65,000 feet high in the sfrat toss fear -- strike that toss fear. its wingspan is as long as half a football field, and it is powered by liquid hydrogen fuel allowing it to hover a week at a time. essentially it is a satellite, but for a fraction of the cost. >> a large satellite a billion plus. >> so we are talking to buy a plane like this tens of millions as opposed to hundreds of millions? >> correct. >> the drone's manufacturer out of southern california says its implications go beyond military purposes. during 9/11 when new york lost

its cell towers, the global observer could have hovered and acted like a platform to restore communications within hours. all the technological start ups south of market in san francisco are not just about social networking. now there is a new smart toy computing human interaction. richard hart reports on a video game that responds to touch. >> taking the hands on tabletop style of classic games anden fusing it with the inter ago tough tee of the video games. >> this is a new way to play games. and it is a new way to learn math and use computers. smart cubes used to mimic the way we interact with computers. >> it is a very physical way of interacting with objects. why continue can't -- why can't our interactions been more like that? we both have a background of being interested in how we can

improve the experience of using technology. that is something we care very deeply about. >> from stanford university to mit's media lab, they invented rechargeable screens that respond to touch, to each other, to the way you hold them and tilt them. like a wii controller that went to college. they communicate through a wireless network. in a game called chroma shuffle, you can match the dots. in another, you rush to create new paths to find lost eggs and to escape a monster. learn to spell by touching the correct letter or work the math problems without a calculater. part of the technology behind this is the same technology that makes smart phones know where they are and how they are being held. >> that will reduce the cost of the electronic components and boosted the quality.

>> cubes will be sold as a new kind of game system, but they are betting that a software development kit will enable the robust market in apps that nobody has envisioned. called them cube apps. richard hartd, abc7 news. >> we have been having a great streak of warm weather. and we deserve it. >> we do. 60s and 70s today. and we will probably continue on the same theme the next several days. although some fog is starting to move back into the forecast. and we'll take a look at that in a moment. a nice shot for you this evening from the high definition rooftop cam. of course, the bay bridge and you can see the moon and high clouds moving across the area. visibility there is less than half a mile. and the central valley fog is a little light east wind that is pushing it toward the bay.

definitely will have to deal with that tomorrow morning 38 in fairfield and 54 in san francisco. it is 42 in livermore and antioch is 47. clear overnight and remember the return of the patchy valley fog and another sunny, mild day for your monday, and then it does look like the dry weather pattern will stay with us through the entire workweek. so no rain in sight. that's at least for the next five to seven days. the fog in the central valley cleared out, but it will return overnight. the slight easterly wind is grabbing it and pushing it toward the coast as well as the bay. so the usual area such as the napa valley, vallejo and up toward fairfield and antioch and pittsburgh and out toward the oakland area, that's where we will look for the best chance of seeing the fog developing overnight. the temperatures in the inland areas in the mid to upper 30s overnight tonight. the forecast models continue

to keep higher pressure over the bay area for at least the next seven days. high pressure minus the mild conditions over the weekend. a few high clouds may sneak under this ridge for the next couple days. we will look for some sunshine and a few high clouds. but clearly you can see how this ridge has really pushed the jet stream or the storm track, kicking it well to the north of us, and this will continue to be the placement all week long. no rain in the accu-weather forecast. it looks like it could be next week that we might see that ridge start to break down and bring us a little moisture in here. tomorrow, the temperatures are much like today, 65 for san jose. a little bit of a hazy sunshine for you there. 61 in pacifica and mid60s for the peninsula, palo alto. san francisco, hazy sunshine, 64. 61 for daly city. 65 for santa rosa. novato 64 tomorrow. 63 for vallejo. 65 for oakland, 64 for union

city. interior east bay, antioch and brentwood, upper 50s to low 60s depending on when the fog lifts. 63 for concord. 70s toward watsonville. 71 there in gilroy. the accu-weather seven-day forecast, little change. we may warm things up a little bit on tuesday. and then we will bring in more of the patchy inland fog for wednesday, thursday and friday. clouds will thicken up next weekend. maybe changes in the forecast. >> thank you, leigh. and an earthquake just struck. a 3 .2 magnitude and it is east, southeast of san jose. the usgs says it happened around 11:12. you may have felt something in that area. let's move to shu. the super bowl picture was set. he picked green bay in the beginning of the year, and lo and behold -- >> they are in there. we had an earthquake in the afc title game. we have our two reps, the steelers and jets.

familiar team representing the afc as the steelers hold off the jets for their third appearance since 2005. with the windchill, the temperatures would drop below zero tonight in pittsburgh. the steelers were hot in the first half. ben roethlisberger and his leg with a difference. the two-yard run makes it 17-0. the ball popped loose and he will scoop and score 19 yards and 24-3 pittsburgh at the half. the jets rally in the second half. in the third, sanchez deep to santonio holmes. 45 yards and it is 24-10. in the fourth, the same score and he was fourth in goal and lt is stuffed. new york turns it over. but on the next play roethlisberger fumbles it and then recover itself. that's a safety. the jets get the ball back. it is 24-19.
